akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

āṇvm (p. 38) s. Pride, arrogance, manliness, கருவம். 2. Self-importance, self-will, conceit of doing some thing one's self, instead of ascribing all transactions, to the deity; in which sense, it is one of the three evil principles or மலம், in which the soul is involved from eternity, and by which it is excited to the performance of moral actions and kept from union with the deity. These must be subjected and annihilated, for the soul's liberation, by the அருள் of the deity. It is used as a means of benefit to the soul, as the acid in fruit becomes a luscious juice, மும்மலத்தொன்று; [ex ஆள்.] 2. One of the thirty-two kinds of arsenic in its natural state, கோளகபாஷாணம். ஆணவப்பிணிப்பு, v. noun. The bondage of moral evil, original sin, ஆண வமலபந்தம். (p.) ஆணவமலம், s. One of the three kinds of மலம். ஆணவமறைப்பு, v. noun. The illusion or blindness in which the soul is held through the power of ஆணவம், மூல மலத்தடை. 20) *
