alampuṭai (p. 28) --அலம்புருடை, s. One of the ten (நாடி) nerves, or blood vessels of the human body, தசநாடியிலொன்று. 11)

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. Edge, keenness of a knife, கத்தியின்கூர். 5. Engraved, carved, or embossed work, bass-relief, இரெகித்தசித்தி ரம். 6. The exterior rind of palmyra fruit which dries and, if pressed, peels off in flakes, பனங்காய்த்தோற்கருக்கு. 7. Jag, indentation, pectination of leaves, &c., இலைகளின்கரு க்கு. 8. [com.] A sharpwitted man, கூர்மையாயிருப்பவன். 2. A man of guile, வஞ்சகன். கருக்கானவாள், s. A sharp sword. கருக்கிட, inf. To whet, edge, sharpen. கருக்குக்கஷாயம், s. A decoction, &c. கருக்குச்சுருட்டு, s. Guilefulness, crookedness of mind, வஞ்சகம். கருக்குப்பீர்க்கு, s. A kind of creeper whose fruit is used for curry. கருக்குப்போட, inf. To make a decoction of drugs. கருக்குவராகன், s. A new pagoda or coin on which the figures are well defined. கருக்குவாய்ப்பட, inf. To be rough edged. கருக்குவாளி--கருக்காமரம், s. The name of a tree, கருக்குவரய்ச்சி, with a dark jagged leaf, serrated, ஓர்மரம், Zizyphus trinervius. (Rott.) கருக்குவாள், s. A sword with a sharp edge, கருக்கானவாள். கருக்குவேலை, s. Work in stone or metal, bass-relief, raised-work, fret-work. கருக்குள்ளது, appel. n. That which is sharp-edged. கருக்கெடுபட, inf. To have the edge of an instrument removed by use. 125)

kāntāri (p. 104) s. One of the ten நாடி veins or nerves, said to extend from the navel to the throat, தசநாடியில்ஒன்று. (சது.) Other authorities say--from சுழிமுனை to the eyes. 2. A tune ஓர்பண். 3. A kind of salt of a burning and acrid nature, சத்தி சாரம். 43)

kiranti (p. 109) s. That part in the body where the three nerves or arteries, இடை, பிங் கலை, and சுழிமுனை, intersect each other, நாடி மூன்றின்சந்து. 2. Ulcer, especially venereal ulcers; venereal complaints, மேகவியாதி. 3. Knotting of the vessels--as in varicocele, &c., இலிங்கக்கிரந்திமுதலியன. 4. Various eruptive complaints arising from bad humors in the system, மேகவூறல். Wils. p. 33. GRANTHI. 5. A ganglion. கிரந்திக்கட்டு, s. A venereal swelling or tumor. கிரந்திக்காரன், s. One who has the venereal disease. கிரந்திநாயகம், s. A plant famous for correcting cutaneous eruptions, ஓர்பூண்டு, Ruellia patula, L. கிரந்திப்பண்டம், s. Any highly-flavored or other food, supposed to heighten venereal disease, or to produce bad humors or cutaneous eruptions. கிரந்திப்பரு, s. A venereal pimple or blotch. கிரந்திப்புண், s. A venereal sore or ulcer; a bubo, chancre. கிரந்தியெண்ணெய், s. A medicinal oil for correcting bad humors in the system. கிரந்திவாயு, s. Flatulency, chiefly in children, connected with eruptions and difficulty of breathing. அழிகிரந்தி, s. A bad form of the கிரந் தி disease. கணுக்கிரந்தி, s. A disease affecting the joints of the body. கருங்கிரந்தி, s. Cutaneous eruption of a black color, affecting children. கள்ளிப்பூக்கிரந்தி, s. A variety of venereal eruption resembling the கள்ளி flower. செங்கிரந்தி--மேககிரந்தி, s. Venereal herpes. (Ainslie's Mut. Med.) துத்திப்பூக்கிரந்தி, s. A variety of venereal eruption resembling the துத்தி flower. நுணுக்காய்க்கிரந்தி, s. A variety of venereal eruption resembling the நுணா fruits. பெருங்கிரந்தி, s. A kind of disease in children, often fatal; to which adults also are sometimes liable. An affection of the mesenteric gland. பெருங்கிரந்தியெண்ணெய், s. A medicinal oil for the பெருங்கிரந்தி disease. 80) *

kuti (p. 119) s. Heel--as of the foot, a shoe, &c., காலின்குதி. See under the verb குதி. குதிகால்--குதிக்கால்--குதிங்கால், s. The heel, காற்குதி. குதிங்காலிலேதைக்க, inf. To run through the heel--as a thorn. குதிங்காலிலேபட, inf. To wound the heel; to pierce the heel. குதிங்காற்சிப்பி, s. [local.] The heelbone. குதிங்கால்தறிக்க, inf. To deprive one of the heels; i. e. to debilitate, enervate. குதிப்பிளவை--குதிக்கள்ளன், s. [prov.] A boil on the heel, குதியில்வரும்ஓர்புண். குதிமுள், s. A spur, குதிரைமுள். குதியாணி, s. caṉṉi (p. 173) s. Affection of the brain, apoplexy, paralysis, convulsions, delirium from fever, &c., சீதநோய்; [perhaps from the Sa. Sanipata, with its suffix apocopated.] --Note. In medical works, thirteen kinds of சன்னி are described. viz.: 1. கண்டகுப் சம், nervous affections of the throat, sore throat; [ex குப்சம், crookedness.] 2. சந்தி கம், (Union.) a disease arising from improper sexual intercourse. It is of two kinds. சுகசன்னி, of a man after bathing with the use of oil for anointing, and சூத கசன்னி, of a female during menstruation. 3. தாந்திரிகம், nervous debility. 4. பகீகனநேத்தி ரகம், affection of the nerves of the eye, blindness. 5. ருக்தாகம், pains of the body attended with thirst. 6. சிஃவீகம், nervous affection of the tongue, dumbness. 7. பிர லாபம், falling sickness, epilepsy. 8. அந்த கம், convulsion preceeding death. 9. ரக்த ஷடீவி, mucus mingled with blood from the nose. 1. சித்தவிப்பிரமம், fainting fits, syncope. 11. சீதகாத்திரகம் or சீதாங்கம், congestion of blood attended with spasms and profuse perspiration; spasmodic cholera. 12. கர்நீகம், nervous deafness. 13. அபின்னி யாசம், convulsion, distortions. சன்னிகுன்மம், s. Convulsive fits. (R.) சன்னிக்கட்டி, s. [prov.] A tumor near or in the ear, காதுவீக்கம். சன்னிக்குணம், s. The stage of a disease bordering upon that of coma, apoplexy, &c., 2. Symptoms, indications, &c., of coma, &c. (c.) சன்னிநரம்பு, s. Nerves of the great toe, which being injured are sometimes inflamed so as to produce lock-jaw. சன்னிநாயகம், s. A plant--black cumin, கருஞ்சீரகம். See சீரகம். 2. A medicinal plant, தும்பைப்பூண்டு. Phlomis Indic. L. சன்னிநாயன்--சன்னிகணாயன், s. (lit. god of fits.) As சன்னிநாயகம், 2. சன்னிபாதம், s. A morbid state of the three humors of the body resulting in paralysis, convulsions, &c.--as சன்னி. W. p. 891. SANNIPATA. சன்னிபாதசுரம், s. (also சன்னிவாதசுர ம்.) Convulsions accompanied with fever. சன்னிபிறக்குதல், v. noun. The inducing of coma. c. அலறுசன்னி, s. Convulsions accompanied with laughter, hysterics--as கம் பீரசன்னி. இரணசன்னி--புறவீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. External convulsions. இசிவுசன்னி, s. Lock-jaw. see underஇசி. v. உள்வீச்சுச்சன்னி, s. caracuvati (p. 166) s. Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, the goddess of speech, eloquence, music and literature, generally கலைமகள். --She is fancied to reside on the tongue of Brahma, also on those of poets and orators. (c.) 2. The name of a river, சரசுவதியாறு. 3. (fig) An amiable, excellent woman, குணவதி. W. p. 97. SARASVATI. (p.) சரசுவதிகூடம், s. A repository of books on all kinds of learning--the archives of the Indian Minerva at Tanjore. சரசுவதிபீடம், s. The Parnassus of the Hindus, where science is said to have been acquired intuitively; a term used in praise of a learned man, or in ridicule. (c.) சரசுவதிபூசை, s. The worship of Sarasvati, on the last day of Navaratri, (நவராத்திரி,) or nine night's worship, together with Durga and Lukshmi. On this occasion school-boys and others pile up their books, styles, &c., fold their arms and worship them as an image of the goddesses. (c.) சரசுவதிவாக்கு, s. [prov.] The influence of Sarasvati--regarded as supernatural, endowing a person with gifts for acquiring knowledge, composing poetry, &c., intuitively. (c.) சரசுவதிமாலை, s. The name of a work on astrology, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். சரசுவதியாறு, s. As சரசுவதி, 2. சரசுவதிநெய், s.
