aṟu (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To cut off, part asunder, cut or break off as a string, வெட்ட. 2. To reap, நென்முதலியனவரிய. 3. To disjoin by cutting or untying--as the marriage string, to separate, sever, நீக்க. 4. To extirpate, exterminate, வேரோடழிக்க. 5. To saw asunder, வாளாலறுக்க. 6. To kill by severing the wind-pipe of beasts, &c., to slay, கழுத் தறுக்க. 7. To burrow, excavate, form subterraneous passages, வளைதோண்ட. 8. Agitated (with sorrow, anxiety, &c.,) as a fowl with its throat cut. அறுத்தறுத்தப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks distinctly. 2. He speaks decisively. 3. He uses cutting words. தடையறுத்துக்கொடுப்பேன். I will remove the obstacles, obviate objections, break the enchantments which prevent success --as in fishing, &c. வீரனுமவன்றலையறுத்தான். And Veeran cut off his head. இருளறுத்தெழுங்கதிர். The rising sun which exterminates the darkness. அறுமணை, s. An instrument for cutting vegetables, fish, &c. 2. A slut, slatterer. 3. A woman ugly or deformed in features. (c.) அறுவடை, v. noun. The act of reaping the corn. அறுவரி, s. A tax paid at fixed times. அறுவிதி, s. Decision. வழக்கறுக்க, inf. To decide a case. ஆடறுக்க, inf. To slay sheep. அறுப்பு, v. noun. Sundering, separating, cutting a part, reaping, &c., அரிகை. 2. A piece, section, அறுத்ததுண்டு. 3. An imprecation of widowhood--in allusion to the sundering of the marriage ornament at the death of the husband, தாலியறுக்கை. 4. The opening of a wound, an open cut, &c., அறுவாய். 5. [in grammar.] A class of particles comprising four kinds, viz.: 1. வேற்றுமையு ருபு, the particles which form the declensions. 2. வினையுருபு, those that form the inflections of verbs including three species, (a) விகுதி, verbal terminations. (b.) இடை நிலை, characteristics of tense and several other intervening particles in the formation of verbs, derivative nouns, &c. 3. சாரியை, auxiliary, component particles employed in the formation of the two classes of verbs. 4. ஒப்புருபு, particles of terms of comparison. 5. The relative participles, ஆகிய, ஆன, &c., affixed to nouns to make adjectives of them. உருபுத்தொகை, s. The suppression of the characteristics of the cases --as மரநுனி. உருபுப்புணர்ச்சி, s. Sand'hi--the union of the particles of inflections with nouns and pronouns, வேற்றுமையுருபுமுதலிய புணர்கை. உருபுமயக்கம், s. The use of one case for another--as the dative for the local ablative, &c., வேற்றுமையுருபுமாறுகை. அமுதம்பூவையைக்கிள்ளையையருத்தி. Feeding the minor and parrot with milk--here the objectives are used for the dative. (நைட.) உருபுமாலை, s. Declension of nouns. உருபுவிரி, s. The expression of the case--as மாத்தினுனி. உவமையுருபு, s. A particle of comparison--as மதிபோலுமுகம், face like the moon. சொல்லுருபு, s. The use of a word for a particle representing the case--as, தடிகொண்டடித்தான், He beat with a stick-here கொண்டு is used for ஆல்; அவனைக்காட் டிலும்வலியன். This person is more powerful than the other. 23) *

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. Forcible language that cannot be controverted, சொற்றிட்பம். உரைவாசகம், s. Prose composition, discourse, language. பாட்டுமுரையும், s. A poem with commentary. திருவள்ளுவருரை, s. kārakam (p. 104) s. Agency, causality, causation, காரணத்துவம். 2. Means, instrument, expedient, &c., to accomplish an action, கருவி. 3. A doing, an action, செயல். 4. [in grammar.] The agent, the subject of a verb, வினைமுதல். 5. The cases of nouns depending in construction on verbs, and not on nouns, வினைகொண்டுவேற்றுமை முடிவது. Wils. p. 213. KARAKA. The six grammatical காரகம் are: 1. கருத்தாகாரகம், nominative case to a verb--as சாத்தன்சேர்ந்தான். 2. கருமகாரகம், objective case, governed by a verb--as சாத்தானைச்சேர்ந்தான். 3. கருவிகாரகம், instrumental ablative, followed by a verb-as வாளால்வெட்டினான். 4. கோளிக்காரகம், dative case, depending on a verb--as சாத்தானுக்குக் கொடுத்தான். 5. அவதிக்காரகம், ablative of motion--as சாத்தனிற்பிரிந்தான். 6. இடக்காரகம், local ablative--as சாத்தனிடஞ்சென்றான். காரகக்கருவி, s. Any of the காரகவேது, in operation, as distinguished from ஞாபகக்கருவி. காரகத்துணைக்கருவி, s. Instruments, &c.--as the wheel of the potter, தொழிற் றுணைக்காரணம். காரகநிமித்தக்கருவி, s. The agent of an action, செய்கையின்நிமித்தகாரணம். காரகமுதற்கருவி, s. The proximate cause--as the clay for a pot, செய்கையின் முதற்காரணம். காரகவேது, s. The three causes in the performance of an action, as காரகக் கருவி. 2. To overturn, upset, capsize; to overthrow, to defeat. கீழறுக்க, inf. To burrow, to excavate, to make a subterranean passage, to undermine, பூமியிற் சுரங்கஞ்செய்ய. 2. (fig.) To undermine, to injure by any underhand, clandestine means, சதிசெய்ய. கீழறை, s. An under-ground room, a cellar, நிலவறை. 2. A cavern, a cell, a hole or passage under ground, வளை. கீழாக, inf. To become depressed, to sink--as a stalk, a heap of muck, &c.; to deteriorate, to waste--as the body by use or disease; or as property, &c., தாழ் வடைய. கீழாக--கீழாய s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. To be subdued, to yield, to be submissive, to become inferior, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To be subject, to be subordinate, to submit to, அடங்க. 3. To be degraded, mean, base, இழிவுபட. கீழ்ப்படிய--கீழ்ப்பணிய inf. To submit, to yield, to obey. கீழ்ப்படியாத்தனம்--கீழ்ப்படியாமை, s. Disobedience, insubordination. கீழ்ப்படிவு, v. noun. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. These signs, as well as the கீழ்நோக் கினநட்சத்திரம், are favorable for planting esculent roots and digging wells. கீழ்மேற்றென்வடல், s. The east, west, north and south. 42)

Rules in Garmmar or other works are of six kinds: 1. பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், the opening of a subject by giving an abstract of the work. 2. தொகைச்சூத்திரம், a synopsis, the divisions in brief, their number, &c., a general rule. 3. வகைச்சூத்திரம், an analysis with general divisions; particular rules. 4. குறிச்சூத்திரம், definitions, &c., demonstrative rules. 5. செய்கைச்சூத்திரம், directory, as in grammar, for permutation, elision, &c., connective rules. 6. புறனடைச்சூத்திரம், supplementary rules to obviate objections; give reasons, explanations, &c., respective rules. Thess are sometimes reduced to two, குறிச்சூத்திரம் and செய்கைச்சூத்திரம். சாத்திரத்தைச்சுட்டுச் சதுமறையைப் பொய்யாக்கி சூத்திரத்தைக்கண்டுசுகம்பெறுவதெக்காலம். When shall the shastras be burnt, the four Vedas proved false, and I through a knowledge of the mystery, be made happy? சூத்திரக்காரன், s. An ingenious or curious artist, an engineer, சூட்சவேலைக்காரன். 2. A man of fine parts, of quick perception, ready wit, &c., சூட்சபுத்தியுள்ளவன். 3. A man of good tact, management, economy, கெட்டிக்காரன். சூத்திரக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. 2. The strings of a purse, a bag, &c. (Compare சூட்சக்க யிறு.) 3. Any thing that puts a machine in motion. 4. The unseen line or spring of creature action, as moved by the divine hand in every event of life, கடவுளது சூட்சம். சூத்திரதாரி, s. The man who manages the springs, strings. &c., of a puppet, பதிமையாட்டி. 2. God--as moving all things, கடவுள். (p.) சூத்திரநிலை, s. The arrangement of rules in grammar, or other scientific or literary works; being of four kinds: 1. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, rules following each other in a regular order. (See ஆறு.) 2. சிங்க நோக்கு, rules having reference to those preceding and following. (See சிங்கம்.) 3. தவளைப்பாய்த்து, a rule referring to the next but one preceding or succeeding. (See தவளை.) 4. பருந்தின்வீழ்வு, a rule referring to several other rules distant from each other. See பருந்து. சூத்திரப்பா, s. [com. நூற்பா.] A simple, easy kind of metre, a species of அகவல். being of a didactic or prosaic metre, adapted to treatises of instruction. The நன்னூல், திவாகரம், பிங்கலந்தை and other works are written in this style. சூத்திரப்பதிமை--சூத்திரப்பாவை--சூத் திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A puppet moved by springs, strings, &c. 2. Creatures--human especially--as influenced by the Supreme Being in all their actions. சூத்திரப்பதிமையாட்டுகிறவன், appel. n. A puppet player. 2. (fig.) A subordinate who having gained the mind of his superior directs it at his own pleasure. சூத்திரப்புறனடை, s. Note appended to a rule, &c., ina literary or scientific work. சூத்திரப்பெட்டி, s. A box whose lock is a puzzle. சூத்திரமாட்ட, inf. To put the machine in operation. (c.) சூத்திரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the form of a rule, a text, a mystery or contrivance. சூத்திரமானகனவு, s. Fault, error, mistake. 3. A thing incomplete, or in an unfinished state, குறைவேலை. செய்குற்றம், s. [prov.] Fault, error, commission of a fault. செய்குன்று, s. An artificial mount. See குன்று. செய்கூலி, s. Hire for work done. 2. Hire for personal labor. செய்தகாரியம், s. A thing done. செய்தபிழை, s. A fault committed. செய்பிழையைப்பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளும். I beg your pardon; pray forgive, &c. செய்தவம், s. Penance, austerities performed, either in the present or any former life. செய்துகாட்ட, inf. To teach or exhibit by practice, action, &c. (c.) செய்துகொடுக்க, inf. To do or make for another. (c.) செய்துபழக, inf. To exercise one's self. 2. To practice. செய்துமுடிக்க, inf. To accomplish, execute, finish. செய்நன்றி, s. Benefits done. செய்நன்றிகொன்றார், appel. n. The ungrateful; (lit.) murderers of benefits. (p.) செய்நன்றியறிதல், v. noun. Showing gratitude for favors received. (p.) செய்பயிர், s. Growing crops, produce of cultivation as differing from spontaneous productions; trees raised with care by cultivation, especially the வே ம்பு, இருப்பை, பனை and புளி. செய்பவன், s. [in gram.] The nominative case, கருத்தா. செய்பாகம், s. Proper means employed to effect an object. 2. Medical knowledge; or skill in preparing medicines, &c., 3. Methodical arrangement. 4. Experimental knowledge. செய்பாகங்கைபாகமறியவேண்டும். One must be acquainted with the preparation and prescription of medicines. செய்பொருள், s. [in gram.] The objective case, செயப்படுபொருள். செய்யாமற்செய்தஉதவி, s. A favor conferred where none has been received. (c.) செய்யுங்காரியம், s. A thing that ought to be done, a duty. 2. A proper or lawful act. செய்யுஞ்சடங்கு, s. Appropriate ceremonies. (c.) செய்வன, s. (plu.) Things fit suitable to be done (p.) செய்வனதிருந்தச்செய். Do things that are right, with all your might. (Avv.) செய்விக்க, inf. To get done, to cause to be done. (c.) செய்வினை, s. Work, business, undertaking, action, avocation, calling, செய் தொழில். 2.
