āḷ (p. 43) --ஆளு, கிறேன், ஆண்டேன், வேன், ஆள, v. a. To rule, reign, exercise royal power, whether supreme or delegated, அரசுசெய்ய. 2. To possess and employ slaves, அடிமையாள. 3. To possess and enjoy the produce of land, the use of a house, &c., ஆட்சிசெய்ய. 4. To govern a wife, household, &c., குடும்பத்தையாள. 5. To accept, adopt--as a servant, slave, &c., receive into protection, ஆட்கொள்ள. 6. To use, establish usage--as in language, மொ ழியாட்சிசெய்ய. 7. To cherish, maintain, cultivate, exercise, ஓம்ப. 8. To manage, direct, கையாள. (c.)--Note. An appellative affix is formed from ஆள் by adding அன், for the singular, and அர் for the plural-as பகையாளன், a foe; பகையாளர், foes. ஆளமாட்டாதவனுக்குப்பெண்டேன்? What does he want with a wife, who cannot govern her? எடுத்தாளாதபொருளுதவாது. A thing not used becomes useless. என்னைமகிழ்வாலிசைந்தாளில். If thou receivest me with cheerfulness into thy protection. நட்பாள்பவர். Those sincerely united in friendship. யாமத்துமாளுந்தொழில். Employed even by night. (குறள்.) சான்றோராலாளப்பட்டசொல். A word used by the learned ancients. மன்னுயிரோம்பியருளாள்வார். They who cherish and exercise charity toward all living. அல்லலருளாள்வார்க்கில்லை. Evil cannot assail the charitable. ஆண்டவன்--ஆண்டான், appel. noun. A ruler, governor, lord, master, ஆள்வோன். ஆண்டி, s. [fem. ஆண்டிச்சி.] A religious mendicant of the Siva sect, a devotee, சிவனடியான். 2. A ruler, an appellative of the deity, transferred to the devotee. ஆண்டை, s. [fem. ஆண்டைச்சி.] A master, lord, landlord--as spoken by low castes, in reference to their feudal chief of superior caste, எசமானன். சத்தியமாய்்ச்சொல்லுகிறேனாண்டைகேளீர். My lord, listen to me; I will confess the truth. (ஞானவெட்.) ஆட்சி, v. noun. Possession, heritage, inheritance, title, உரிமை. 2. Government, domination, rule, reign, ஆளு கை. 3. Use, practice, occupancy, usage-especially in language by classical writers, வழக்கம். ஆட்சித்தானம்--ஆட்சிராசி, s. [in astrology.] One of the five situations in which a planet has government--that of its being in a sign deemed its own, during which it exerts special benignity --an occurrence favorable to the birth of a child, &c. ஆட்சிப்பட, inf. To become one's right by long possession, தற்கிழமை யாக. நெடுநாளாயவனுக்காட்சிப்பட்ட தெய்வம். A spirit or demon that has long been subject to him, or with which he has long been familiar. ஆட்சிப்படுத்த, inf. To secure a title by long possession, தற்கிழமையாக்க. ஆளுகை, v. noun. Rule, government, domination, authority. ஆளுகைசெய்ய, inf. To exercise government. ஆள்வாரில்லாமாடு, s. A cow or bull appropriated to a temple, which is left to stray as it likes; such are well received and fed. 59)

Being ruined, undone or destroyed. குடிகெடுக்க--குடியைக்கெடுக்க, inf. TO destroy or ruin a family. குடிகேடன்--குடிகேடி, s. One who ruins a family. 2. the ruiner of a family, being one of the number. குடிகேடு, s. Ruin to a family; an unavoidable ruin. குடிகொள்ள, inf. To inhabit, dwell; to take possession of the mind--as a deity or devil; or of a house--as a demon; also--as bats, snakes, &c.; to be seated or eatablished--as a lingering or chronic disease. என்னுளங்குடிகொண்டகுலதெய்வமே. [in gram.] Nouns of family names--as in ஊர்கிழான். குடிமகன், s. A feudatory, or a man of the servile tribe in relation to the families (குடி) of superior caste, to which under certain restrictions he is subject. The connexion is commonly hereditary. 2. A barber, அம்பட்டன். குடிமக்கள், s. Servile castes in relation to their feudal chiefs, eighteen in number: 1. வண்ணான், washerman. 2. நாவி தன், barber. 3. குயவன், potter. 4. தட்டான், gold or silver-smith. 5. கன்னான், brazier. 6. கற்றச்சன், mason. 7. கொல்லன், blacksmith. 8. தச்சன், carpenter. 9. எண்ணெ ய்வாணிகன், oil-monger. 1. உப்புவாணிகன், salt-dealer. 11. இலைவாணிகன், betel-seller. 12. பள்ளி. 13. பூமாலைக்காரன், garlandmaker. 14. The special servants in the above are the barber, washerman, black-smith, carpenter and grave-digger. குடிமதிப்பு, s. Assessment, valuation of property for taxation. குடிமார்க்கம்--குடிமுறை, s. Domestic life. 2. Proper conduct as a householder. குடிமிராசி--குடிமிராசு, s. The right or privilege of a hereditary occupant. குடிமிராசிகொடுக்க, inf. To endue with particular மிராசு privileges. குடிமை, s. Customs or manners of the higher classes, மேற்குலத்தார்நடக்கை. 2. Lineage, family, descent. குடிவரலாறு. 3. Vassalage, servitude, feudal dependence, feudal right or cunnexion; a feudatory in reference to his chief. (See குடிமக்கள்.) --Note. The chief is entitled to the service of his feudatory whenever required, and the latter to a proportion of the produce of the land, to perquisites at weddings, funerals, &c. 4. To ruin a family. குடியழிய, inf. v. n. To be buried or ruined--as a family. குடியழிவு, v. noun. Ruin of a family. 2. A great evil, often hyperbolically used. குடியானவன், s. An inhabitant; emphatically a caste man, one not of a low caste. குடியியல்பு, s. Domestic life, family management. 2. Domestic order, domestic rules of management. குடியிருப்பு, s. Living--as a family, or an inhabitant; residing, குடியிருக்கை. 2. An inhabited, settled, or populated place, a village, கிராமம். 3. The parts of a village inhabited by different castes respectively. The name of the caste is commonly prefixed --as செட்டிகுடியிருப்பு, a chitties' village. குடியிறங்க, inf. To settle, tarry or halt --as a family or a tribe. குடியிற்பிறந்தவன், s. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. To settle people in a country, to stock with inhabitants, to people, to populate. குடிவாழ்க்கை, v. noun. Domestic economy, house-keeping. 2. Regulation of a household. குடிவிளங்கப்பண்ண, inf. To render a family illustrious' and prosperous. குடிவைக்க-குடியிருத்த, inf. To settle or establish a family. 2. To provide a family with the means of sustenance. சிறந்தகுடி, s. tāṉi (p. 236) s. That which is in a place, the occupant, inhabitant, தானத்திலுள்ளது; [ex ஸ்தானம்.] 2. What has or contains; used in composition, as இராசதாளி. (Sa. Dhánee.) தானியாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] A figure of speech in which the name of the occupier, is applied to the place or thing occupied, as விளக்குமுறிந்தது, the lamp is broken, that is, the frame, it being used for the light. 18) *

nir (p. 277) A Sanscrit prefix implying negation, privation, இன்மை, as நிர்நாமன், the nameless; also fulness, நிறைவு, as நிர்நாசம், entire destruction. The final ர், often takes the particle உ, as நிரு; sometimes changes to ஷ், as நிஷ்களங்கம், being spotless; to ச், as நிச்சிந்தை, a quiet mind, and to ன், as நின் மலம். See துர். நிரங்குசம், s. Extirpation, utter destruction, total extinction, பாழாதல்; also நின்மூலம். நிருமூலப்பட--நிருமூலமாக, inf. To be utterly destroyed. நிருமூலமாக்க--நிரூமூலம்பண்ண, inf. To destroy totally. நிருவாசம், s. That which is uninhabited, without occupant, குடியின்மை. நிருவிகற்பம்--நிர்விகற்பம், s. Freedom from passions, emotions, &c., entire tranquillity of the soul by abstract devotion, விகற்பமின்மை. நிருவிகற்பக்காட்சி, s. [in the Agama log.] Indefinite or indistinct knowledge, perception, &c. See காட்சி. நிருவிகற்பசமாதி--நிருவிகற்பச்சமாதி, s. The state of the ascetic, void of all affection, passion, &c., ஒர்யோகநிலை. நிருவிகாரம்--நிர்விகாரம், s. Unchangeableness, as in the Deity, who, in performing his operations is unaffected by them and in the actions of creatures has no participation or contamination, விகாரமின்மை. 2. Freedom from passions, &c., as நிர்க்குணம். நிருவிகாரி--நிர்விகாரி, s. One free from change as the Deity, or as the soul approximating to the Deity, கடவுள். நிருவிக்கினம்--நிர்விக்கினம், s. Freedom from obstruction, impediment, இடையூறி ன்மை. நிருவிசாரம்--நிர்விசாரம், s. Carelessness, recklessness, வேண்டாமை. 2. Tranquillity, freedom from, கவலையின்மை. நிருவிடம்--நிருவிஷம்--நிர்விஷம். s. A plant, Curcuma Zedoaria from which a poisonous drug is extracted, used as an antidote to snake bites, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. (fig.) [ex நிர், fulness.] A very wicked person, துன்மார்க்கன். நிர்க்குணம், s. [vul. நிர்க்குணம்] Being without attributes, குணமின்மை. நிர்க்குணன், s. The Deity. See குணம். நிர்த்தாட்சிணியம், s. An unfavorable look, unkindness, unmindfulness, கண் ணோட்டமின்மை. நிர்த்தூளி, s. Utter demolition, entire destruction, சருவநாசம். நிர்தூளிபண்ண--நிர்த்தூளியாக்க, inf. To destroy utterly. நிர்த்தூளியாக, inf. To be reduced to dust, destroyed. நிர்நாசம், s. Imperishableness. See நிருநாசம். நிர்நிமித்தம்--நிர்நிமித்தியம், s. Without and cause, முகாந்தரமின்மை. நிர்ப்பத்தியம்--நிஷ்பத்தியம், s. Being without restraint in diet, &c., as a patient, பத்தியமின்மை. நிர்ப்பந்தம், s. [vul. நிற்பந்தம்] Misery, calamity, wretchedness, affliction.-Note. This word varies in Tamil from the Sanscrit. நிர்ப்பந்தமாயிருக்கிறவன். A woman in travail. (R.) நிர்ப்பாக்கியம், s. [vul. நிற்பாக்கியம்.] Unluckiness, misfortune. நிர்ப்பாக்கியன், s.
