A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

A fabulous serpent supposed to support the earth on his head--king of the serpents, அனந்தன். He is said to have existed prior to the creation of the world and to continue to exist after its destruction; [ex சேஷன், who remains.] ஆதிச்சனி, s. The tenth lunar mansion, மகநாள். (p.) ஆதித்தாய், s. iẕu (p. 55) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw, pull, haul, drag, tug, drag to justice, to drag along the ground, ஈர்க்க. 2. To attract--as a magnet, ஊசி முதலியவீர்க்க. 3. To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To drag one into an affair, to cite, force one to court, &c., to drag one's name, &c. in support of an argument or practice, வலிகக. 6. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

urāy (p. 64) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், உரா ய, v. n. To rub against a thing, உடலுரிஞ்ச. (பிங்.) 2. To rub against one another-as trees, உரிஞ்ச. உராய்போதல், v. noun. Rubbing in a crowd, jungle, &c., in passing, உரிஞ் சிப்போதல். 2. Rubbing one's self against a thing, உரைதல். (p.) 10)

uriñu (p. 64) --உரிஞ்சு, கிறேன், உரிஞி னேன்--உரிஞ்சினேன், வேன், உரிஞ--உரிஞ்ச, v. n. and a. To rub one's self, rub as beasts, chafe, உராய. 2. To become rubbed or grazed against a thing, to be bruised, excoriated, grazed off, &c., தேய. 3. To rub against one another--as trees, உரோச. 4. To rub away, wear away by rubbing, grind away --as sandal, to triturate, அரைக்க. (p.) நறுங்குறடுரிஞ்சுபூந்தேய்வை. The soft paste produced by triturating the fragrant sandal wood. (நைட.) உவாமதியுடலுரிஞ்சுதலாற்பிள்ளைவெண்மதியாதனன் றென்பபெரிதவக்கும். The full moon grazing his body (in passing through the window) wished himself young again. (நைட.) 16)

urupu (p. 65) s. Form, shape, வடிவம். 2. [in grammar.] A class of particles comprising four kinds, viz.: 1. வேற்றுமையு ருபு, the particles which form the declensions. 2. வினையுருபு, those that form the inflections of verbs including three species, (a) விகுதி, verbal terminations. (b.) இடை நிலை, characteristics of tense and several other intervening particles in the formation of verbs, derivative nouns, &c. 3. சாரியை, auxiliary, component particles employed in the formation of the two classes of verbs. 4. ஒப்புருபு, particles of terms of comparison. 5. The relative participles, ஆகிய, ஆன, &c., affixed to nouns to make adjectives of them. உருபுத்தொகை, s. The suppression of the characteristics of the cases --as மரநுனி. உருபுப்புணர்ச்சி, s. Sand'hi--the union of the particles of inflections with nouns and pronouns, வேற்றுமையுருபுமுதலிய புணர்கை. உருபுமயக்கம், s. The use of one case for another--as the dative for the local ablative, &c., வேற்றுமையுருபுமாறுகை. அமுதம்பூவையைக்கிள்ளையையருத்தி. Feeding the minor and parrot with milk--here the objectives are used for the dative. (நைட.) உருபுமாலை, s. Declension of nouns. உருபுவிரி, s. The expression of the case--as மாத்தினுனி. உவமையுருபு, s. A particle of comparison--as மதிபோலுமுகம், face like the moon. சொல்லுருபு, s. The use of a word for a particle representing the case--as, தடிகொண்டடித்தான், He beat with a stick-here கொண்டு is used for ஆல்; அவனைக்காட் டிலும்வலியன். oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. To pack in, to put in, to put things close in a bag, a box or other receptacle, செறிக்க. உலகப்பற்றையொவ்வொன்றாயொடுக்க. To relinquish worldly attachments one by one. ஒடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To compress and tie a thing close. 2. To tuck up the skirts and fasten the end behind-as in wet weather. 3. To hem an ola basket, fan, &c. ஒடக்கித்தட்ட, inf. To make a metal utensil thicker and narrower by beating. ஒடுக்கித்தைக்க, inf. To make a garment smaller. ஒடுக்கிவெட்ட, inf. To hew timber reducing the breadth. ஒடுக்குவாய், s. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun. Contracting, closing, compression, narrowness, அடக் கம். 2. s. A corner to creep into, இடுக்கு. ஒடுக்கிடம், s. A corner, a narrow or confined place, மூலை. 2. A recess, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். ஒடுக்குச்சீட்டு--ஒடுக்குத்துண்டு, s. A receipt given by government for money, வரிச்சீட்டு. பணவொடுக்கு, v. noun. [prov.] A remittance of money. 48)

oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. The old woman is pleased with nothing. உத்தியோகத்தையொப்புக்கொள்ள. To enter upon, or succeed another in an office. கோட்டையையொப்புக்கொண்டான். He has taken charge of the fort (from the power that surrendered it). அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாட்டிலேயொப்புக்கொள்ளவில் லை. He has no relish for food. ஒப்புமொழி, s. A written agreement between two parties. ஒப்புறுத்த, inf. To make a comparison, உவமிக்க. ஒப்பெடுத்தழ--ஒப்பிட்டழ, inf. To bewail and sing a funeral elegy, commonly extempore. 18)

kuṭam (p. 116) s. A large kind of earthen pot, கும்பம். 2. A sign of the zodiac; Aquarius, கும்பவிராசி. Wils. p. 226. KUT'A. 3. Sugar, jaggery, molasses, சருக்கரை. 4. A globular or round part of a pillar, a cylindrical body, திரட்சி. Wils. p. 29. GUD'A. எண்ணெய்க்குடமும்வெறுங்குடமும்முட்டினாலெ தற்குச்சேதம். If a pot of oil come in collision with an empty pot, which, by breaking, is the greater loss; i.e. in collision, who is the sufferer, the man of character or the worthless person? ஒருகுடம்பாலுக்கொருதுளிஉறைமோர். One drop of butter-milk for coagulating a whole pot of milk; i. e. a good character, obligations of kindness, &c., are forfeited by a single bad action. புறக்குடத்துத் தண்ணீர்போல. Like water on the outside of a pot; i. e. forgotten as soon as learnt; advised or taught to no purpose. பொன்னின்குடத்துக்குப்பொட்டிடவேண்டுமோ.... Does it require that a golden pot be decorated; i. e. things of substantial worth need no embellishment. மாமியார்உடைத்தால்மண்குடம் மருமகளுடைத்தாற் பொன்குடம். If broken by the mother-inlaw, it is a mere earthen pot; but if by the daughter-in-law, it is a golden vessel; i. e. slight faults in inferiors are greatly magnified. குடங்கை, s. The palm of the hand. வெறுங்குடம், s. An empty pot. 2. (fig.) One who knows nothing. குறைகுடம், s. A water-pot not quite full. நிறைகுடம், s. To make a sound by blowing into pots, with dancing or jumping--as low-caste women at marriages and in some places at a temple, குடத் தினுள்ளூதியொலிபிறப்பிக்க. குடம்விட்டுக்கட்ட, inf. [prop.] To decorate the marriage pole with stiffened cloth, so as to resemble pots placed one on another. குடமுழா, s. A kind of drum made of a pot, முழவு. குடமல்லிகை, s. A kind of jasmine, ஓர் மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac, L. Arabian jasmine. See மல்லிகை. குடமுருட்டி, s. A branch of the Kavery, ஓர் ஆறு. குடச்சிப்பி, s. A round shell or conch. குடவுழுந்தர், s. The name of a celebrated poet who, in his youth, was as long in getting a lesson as it required to fill a pot with lentils, உழுந்து, one at a time, ஓர்புலவன், குடவெழுத்தாணி, s. An iron-style with knobs or balls at the top, one above another, tapering to a point. குடம்வைத்தல், v. noun. Playing with the fists one on another, and knocking off the upper in succession, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. குடமண், s. White sand, வெண் மணல். (M. Dic.) 26)

kolai (p. 146) s. Killing, slaying, slaughter, murder, assassination, butchery, உயிர்வதை. 2. (fig) The guilt of killing, கொலைக்குற்றம்; [ex கொல், kill.] கொலைகாரன்--கொலையாளன், s. A murderer, an assassin. 2. An executioner. 3. A killer, slaughterer, butcher. கொலைக்களம், s. A place of public execution. கொலைசூழ--கொலைசுற்ற, inf. To contrive or compass one's death. (p.) 2. To find out the guilt of murder. கொலைசெய்ய, inf. To kill, slay; to commit murder, take away life, to butcher. கொலைஞர், s. Assassins, murderers, killers, butchers, கொலைபாதகர். 2. Hunters; those who live by the chase, வேடர். (p.) கொலைபாதகம், s. The crime or guilt of murder; taking away life, human or other--chiefly of men or cows; one of the five heinous sins. See பாதகம். கொலைபாதகன், s. A heinous killer, or murderer. கொலைப்பழி, s. The blame or guilt of murder. கொலைமறுத்தல், v. noun. Denouncing all killing. This is scrupulously done by Jainas under all circumstances. கொலையுண்ண, inf. To be killed. 109)
