ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

urppu (p. 63) கிறேன், உரப்பினேன், வே ன், உரப்ப, v. n. and a. To whoop, vociferate inarticulately or otherwise--as in driving cattle, scaring away birds, beasts, or human beings, to menace or intimidate by shouts, to bluster, shout, call, அதட்ட. 2. To urge forward beasts of burden with shouts, துரத்த. 3. (p.) To pronounce with aspiration, as the second letter in each of the five series of Sanscrit gutterals, உரத் தொலிக்க. ஆனையையுரப்பிலிடு. Frighten away, or drive the elephants along. ஒருவரேயெதிரினிங்ஙனுரப்பியேதுரப்பர். If but one should oppose them, he may rout them all merely by a menacing shout. உரப்பிப்பார்க்க, inf. To use menace, boisterousness, &c., in order to try the courage of any one to beat him down, &c. உரப்பியடிக்க, inf. To attempt, overcome by boisterous talk, overcome in whole, or in part. உரப்பு, v. noun. Bluster, shout, vociferation, whoop, call, அதட்டுகை.

tṉi (p. 231) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், தனிக்க, v. n. To be alone, single solitary, தனியா யிருக்க. 2. To be detached from company, ஒன்றியாக. 3. To have no mate, fellow, equal or match, ஒட்டாதிருக்க. 4. To be deserted, forsaken, helpless--as by the departure, or death of friends, அந்தரிக்க. (c.) தனிக்க, inf. [adverbially.] Alone, apart, &c., as தனிப்பெற. தனித்தஇடம், s. A solitary place. தனித்தகுடி, s. A solitary family. 2. A destitute, forlorn or helpless family. தனித்தாள், s. (a contraction of தனி த்த and ஆள்.) A single person, as a bachelor, widow, &c. 2. A helpless, forlorn, destitute person; also தனியாள். தனித்திருக்க, inf. (as தனிக்க.) To be alone; to be single, unmarried; to be alone, as a recluse. தனித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. [vul. prop. த னித்திருக்க.] To be left, forsaken, detached, to be alone--by banishment or otherwise--to be helpless, forlorn. தனித்துப்பேச, inf. To speak privately to any one. தனித்துப்போக, inf.
