அபிநயம்
apinayam (p. 17) s. Indication of passion, purpose, &c., by gesture in dramatic personification, acting, gesture, கைமெய்காட் டுகை. Wils. p. 53. AB'HINAYA. 2. A treatise on gesticulation, அபிநயநூல். அபிநயர், s. Actors, dancers, கூத்தர். அபிநயிக்க, inf. alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. ஆயுதம்
āyutam (p. 40) s. A weapon, arms in general, படைக்கலம். Wils. p. 118. AYUD'HA. 2. (c.) A tool, implement, instrument கருவி. 3. (p.) Dancing place, கூத் துப்பயிலிடம். ஆயுதசாலை, s. An armory, arsenal. ஆயுதந்தரிக்க, inf. To bear arms, to be armed. ஆயுதபரிக்கை--ஆயுதபரிட்சை-ஆயுதப்பயிற்சி, s. Military exercise, the art of fencing, &c. ஆயுதபாணி, s. An armed man, one under arms. (p.) ஆயுதபூசை, s. An annual festival in September, when worship for nine days is offered to different kinds of weapons, tools, books, &c.--as a personification of Durga, Lukshmi and Sarasvati, the goddesses of war, wealth and learning; there days being appropriated to each, and no learning, or special exercise attended to, during this time, நவராத்திரி. ஆயுதவகை, s. The two kinds of weapons; viz.: 1. missiles, அத்திரம். 2. Those held in the hand, சத்திரம். ஆயுதவருக்கம், s. Armor in general, different kinds of arms, panoply. 7) *
இலக்கணை
ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)
இலிங்கம்
ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Wils. p. 72. LINGA. இலிங்ககோளம், s. Glans penis. (Anat.) இலிங்கங்கட்டி--இலிங்கதாரி, s. One who wears the linga. இலிங்கசங்கமம், s. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)
உரு
uru (p. 65) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To be angry, be provoked, be fierce, to rage, கோபிக்க. 2. To exhibit signs of anger, சினக்குறிப்புக்காட்ட. 3. To be abundant, copious, மிக. 4. To be intense, அதிகரிக்க. 5. To be great, பெரிதாக. 6. To sprout, shoot, முளைக்க. 7. To have an origin, come into existence, to be evolved, வெளிப்பட. 8. To appear, assume form, தோற்ற. 9. To result in effects--as the deeds of former births, to grow mature, கன் மம்விளைய. (p.) நல்லறமேயுருத்தெழுந்திடுமௌவைநந்தாய். Oh! venerated mother, virtue personified. வெவ்வினையுருத்தகாலை. When the vile deeds (the fruits of them) appeared. (சிலப்பதி காரம்.) ஊழ்வினையுருத்தென. As soon as the deeds connected with former births had become matured. (சிலப்பதி.) உருத்தல், v. noun. எமன்
emaṉ (p. 73) s. The deity of Naraca or hell, where his capital is placed, in which he sits in judgment on the dead, and distributes rewards and punishments, sending the good to Swerga, and the wicked to the division of Naraca or Tartarus appropriated to their crimes: he corresponds with the Grecian god Pluto, and the judge of hell Minos. and in Hindu mythology is often identified with death and time; he is the son of Surya, or the sun, and brother of the personified Yamuna or Jumna river, நமன். Wils. p. 681. YAMA. (இயமன் and யமன்.) 2. The third fang of the cobra, நரகபாம்பின்பற்களிலொன்று. (p.) எமகணம்--எமகிங்கிரர்--எமதூதர், s. The messengers of Yama employed to execute his behests, apprehending souls and conveying them to Tartarus, நமன் றூதர். எமதூதன், s. The fourth fang of the cobra, நரகபாம்பின்பற்றிகளிலொன்று. எமலோகம், s. The place of the deceased; the purgatory of the Hindus; the kingdom of எமன். எமாஸ்திரம், s. His weapons of which there are three kinds, viz:. 1. கணிச்சி, a trident. 2. தண்டு, a club. 3. பாசம், a rope. 70)
ஏகோதிட்டம்
ēkōtiṭṭam (p. 77) --ஏகோதிஷ்டம், s. A principal part of the Shradd'ha or funeral rite performed at the house after the அந்தியேட்டி, for the benefit of the deceased, by the sons or other heirs. The officiating brahman personifies the manes of the deceased and receives whatever is presented, which should be sufficient for his support, till the anniversary of the death, during which he should not appear abroad or be seen by the heirs of the deceased whom he represents. ஓங்காரம்
ōngkāram (p. 84) s. The mysterious syllable ஓம், the silent recitation of the ஓம், the letter with which each mantra begins and ends, பிரணவம். Wils. p. 175. ONKARA. ஓங்காரவுரு, s. The syllable ஓம் personified as the deity. ஓங்காரிக்க, inf. To repeat the sacred syllable ஓம், ஓங்காரமுச்சரிக்க. 44)
கங்கை
kangkai (p. 85) s. The river Ganges or its personification as a goddess being the wife of Chandanu, பகீரதி. Wils. p. 275. GANGA. கங்காசலம், s. The water of the Ganges, either as flowing in its bed, or as conveyed to other places for sacred purposes. Wils. p. 776. GANGAJALA. கங்காசலக்குப்பி, s. A vessel made of a kind of coarse black glass in which the Hindu ascetics convey water from the Ganges, மேருக்குப்பி. கங்காசுதன்--கங்கைபெற்றோன்-கங்கைமைந்தன், s. Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. Subramania, சுப்பிரமணியன். Wils. p. 276. GANGASUTA. 3. Ganesa, விநாயகன். (p.) கங்காக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The river Ganges including two kosh, or about four miles on either of its banks; all dying within such limits go to heaven, whatever be their crimes. 2. A pure or sacred place. Wils. p. 276. GANGAKSHETHRA. கங்காதரன், s. Siva, சிவன். Wils. p. 276. GANGATHARA. கங்காதீரம், s. The sacred banks of the Ganges, கங்கைக்கரை. Wils. p. 276. GANGATEERA. கங்காதேவி, s. The river Ganges regarded as a goddess, கங்கை. கங்காஸ்நானம், s. Ablution in the Ganges. கங்கேஷ்மிசுரன், s. The name of a famous brahman, a logician who lived near the Ganges, the author of the book கௌடதர்க்சம். கங்கேஷ்மிசுரம், s. A logical treatise composed by கங்கேஷ்மிசுரன். கங்கைசக்களத்தி, s. Parvati, பார் ப்பதி. கங்கைவேணியன், s. Siva, he whose hair is adorned with the Ganges, சிவன். 25)
கன்மம்
kaṉmam (p. 102) s. Moral actions, especially in their effects--as the cause of transmigrations and their accompanying joys and sorrows, pleasure and pains, intelligence or stupidity, &c., சஞ்சிதகன்மம். 2. Actions, செய்தொழில். 3. Evil actions, evil, vice, தீவினை. (See கருமம்.) 4. Fate, destiny, the fruits, retributions, &c., of actions in former births, பிராரத்தகன்மம். Wils. p. 198. KARMMAN. In the Agamas, actions and their effects are of three classes, viz: 1. ஆகாமியம், moral actions, good and evil of the present life, considered as the source of future births with their suffering and enjoyment. 2. சஞ்சிதம், the accumulated actions of the soul in former births, the retributions of which are to be experienced in future transmigrations. 3. பிராரத்தம் or பிராரத்துவம், the enjoyment and sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present state --as the retributions of actions in former births. அவனைக்கொல்லாதேகன்மம்பிடிக்கும். Do not kill him, if you do, the action will seize you. கன்மங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. See கருமங் கட்டுப்பட. கன்மகாண்டம், s. A medical book treating of diseases, as caused by the sins of former births, and the means necessary to remove them, so that medicines may prove effectual, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். கன்மசண்டாளன், s. See கரும சண்டாளன். கன்மசாந்தி, s. A ceremony for the expiation of the evil of former deeds, கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மஞ்செய்தகுடி, s. A family guilty of wicked actions in former births, now made manifest by their sufferings. கன்மத்தியாகம், s. Expiation of the evil of a former birth. கன்மத்துரோகி, s. A wicked wretch, a criminal, சண்டாளன். கன்மநிவர்த்தி--கன்மநிவாரணம், s. See கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மந்தொலைய, inf. To become extinct, to be worked or eaten out and terminated--as former evil deeds. கன்மபந்தம், s. [as கருமபந்தம்.] The bond or connexion between the sins of former births and their subsequent punishment. கன்மபரிபாகம், s. Ripening, or expiration of the accumulated merit of the actions of former births, கன்மவொழிவு. கன்மபாதகம், s. A heinous crime. கன்மபாதகன், s. One guilty of some heinous crime, கொடியபாதகன். கன்மபூமி, s. The earth as the theatre of moral actions, or place where virtue and vice are practised, and their respective merit and demerit accumulated, பூலோகம். கன்மம்பிடிக்க, inf. To attend, follow, or pursue--as the guilt of crimes personified. கன்மம்புசிக்க, inf. To experience the good or evil of former actions. கன்மவலை, s. The net of moral actions, கன்மபாசம், i. e. the entanglements of births, or actions and their result, in subsequent transmigrations. கன்மவாதனை, s. See கருமவேதனை. கன்மரோகம்--கன்மவியாதி, s. See கருமவியாதி. கன்மவுடம்பு, s. Bodies assumed, as a result of former deeds, கன்மசரீரம். கன்மாதி, s. Funeral rites, &c., for deceased ancestors, கர்மாதி. கன்மி, s. A heinous sinner, a perpetrator of crimes, கருமி. கன்மேந்திரியம், s. The five organs of action, தொழிற்கருவி. See இந்திரியம். 68)
கலி
kli (p. 96) s. Noise, clamor, sound, ஒலி. 2. The கலிப்பா. species of verse and its varieties. (See பா.) 3. Sea, ocean, கடல். 4. Battle, war, போர். 5. Deceit, fraud, வஞ்சகம். 6. Strength, force, வலி. (p.) 7. Misery, misfortune, disaster, calamity-also misery, personified as a deity, சிறுமை. 8. The fourth age of the world or that of vice, misery, deterioration, &c. See கலியுகம். கலிக்குப்புதுமையானகாரியமாயிருக்கிறது. It is a strange thing in this age. கலிகாலம், s. A time of misery, bad times--as resulting from the present age, கொடுமையானகாலம். கலிதீர்த்தான். He who put an end to misery. கலித்தளை, s. Mode of connexion of metrical feet in கலிப்பா. See தளை. கலித்தாழிசை, s. A class of verse, கலிப்பாவினத்திலொன்று. கலித்துருமம், s. The தான்றிமரம்-A tree yielding a nut much used in medicines, it is said in நைடதம் that Kali, the god of the iron age, once concealed himself in the fruit of this tree, Terminalia bellerica. (p.) கலித்துறை, s. A class of verse including several species, கலிப்பாவினத்தி லொன்று. கட்டளைக்கலித்துறை, s. A class of கலித்துறை verse. கலிப்பா, s. A verse of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. நேரிசை ஒத்தாழிசைக் கலிப்பா. 2. அம்போதரங்க ஒத்தாழிசைக்கலிப்பா. 3. தரவு கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 4. தரவிணைக்கொச்சக் கலிப்பா. 5. சிஃறாழிசைக்கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 6. பஃறாழிசைகொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 7.மயங்கிசைக்கொ ச்சக்கலிப்பா. 8. ஒருபோகு கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 9. வண்ணக ஒத்தாழிசைக்கலிப்பா. 1. வெண் கலிப்பா. கட்டளைக்கலிப்பா, s. A species of கலிப்பா verse. கலியர், s. Soldiers, warriors, combatants, படைவீரர். 2. The poor, destitute, தரித்திரர். (p.) கலியாத்தம்--கலியாப்தம், s. Any year of the கலிவருஷம். கலியுகம்-கடையுகம்-நாலாம்யுகம், s. The present iron age being the last of the four Yugas or great ages of the world. Wils. p. 22. KALIUGA.--Note. Its commencement is placed about three-hundred years anterior to the Christian era. Its years are four hundred and thirty-two thousand, at the expiration of which the golden age returns. கலிவிருத்தம், s. A class of verse, கலிப்பாவினத்திலொன்று. கலிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெண் பா. 239)
காயத்திரி
kāyattiri (p. 104) s. The Gayatri--the most sacred verse of the Vedas, recited mentally as an incantation, ஓர்மந்திரம். 2. (p.) Gayatri, a goddess or personification of the sacred verse, காயத்திரி சுரூபியாயிருப்பவள். 3. A name of Saraswathi, சரச்சுவதி. Wils. p. 288. GAYATRI. 4. Ebony, கருங்காலி. பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The Brahma Gayatri, recited by brahmans of whatever sect, in their daily worship.-- Note. The use of this Gayatri was probably established in some remote age when the worship of Brahma was practised. This has long been discontinued except in this form of the Gayatri. It is said to be addressed to the sun. Compare சாவித் திரி. சிவகாயத்திரி, s. The Siva Gayatri. 84)
காலம்
kālam (p. 104) s. Time. duration, பொழுது-Note. In Hindu philosophy, காலம் is said by the Saivas to have proceeded from மோகினி Maya, and to be a co-efficient cause with Siva in the acts of creation, preservation and destruction. It is Time personified, and according to the Hindu metaphysicians, one of the seven வித்தியாத் துவம். (சிவ. சி.) 2. Season of the year or life; also a specific time of the day, பருவம். 3. A seasonable or proper time, opportunity, season, சமயம். Wils. p. 216. KALA. 4. Day-break, விடியல். 5. (fig.) (c.) The time appointed for death, as distinguished from that for accident death, முடிவு. 6. [in gram.] Tense; also, the characteristic of a tense, வினையின்காலம். The three tenses are, இறந்தகாலம், எதிர்காலம், நிகழ்காலம். 7. [in music.] The three measure--as (1.) விளம் பம், slow. (2.) துரிதம், quick. &c. (3.) மத் திமம், the medium. 8. Epoch, era, யுகம். 9. Weather, காலவியல்பு. காலத்துக்குத்தக்ககோலம். Adapting one's self to the times. காலத்துக்குத்தக்கதாய்நடக்க. inf. To live according to circumstances. காலம்போம்வார்த்தைநிற்கும். Time files, but words remain. காலகதி, s. Events of time, காலநடை. காலகதியை யாவருங் கடக்கமாட்டார்கள். None cane escape the events of time. காலகருமம்--காலகன்மம், s. Employments, duties, &c., appropriate to an age, time, season, stage of life, &c., காலத்துக் குரியசெய்கை. காலக்கிரமம், s. The course of time; chronological order, காலவொழுங்கு. காலக்கிரயம், s. The price of the articles for the time being; current or market price, காலவிலை. காலக்குறி, s. Signs of the time. காலக்கொடுமை, s. The evils, calamities, &c., of time. காலங்கண்டவன், s. The different number of years of influence ascribed to the respective planets as operative on the lives of persons, ஆயுள்நியதிச்சக்கரம். 2. The aggregate of the years of the nine planets according to their respective influence, கிரகபலச்சக்கரம். 3. Period or term of life, ஆயுட்காலம். Wils. p. 216. KALACHAKRA.. அவனுக்குக்காலச்சக்கரமுடிவுவந்துவிட்டது. The end of his term is come. காலசங்கதி, s. Intelligence, news or events of the time or the day. காலசங்கை, s. Guess of time from mere inspection, காலஉத்தேசம். 2. Reckoning of time, காலக்கணக்கு. (p.) காலசந்தி, s. The daily morning worship; also applicable to that at noon and evening. 2. The interval between any two yugas, kalpas, &c. See கற்பம் and சந்தி. திரிகாலசந்தி, s. Worship in the morning, at noon and in the evening. காலசுகம், s. Favorableness of the time, astrologically and superstitiously considered. காலஞ்செல்ல, inf. To depart this life, to die. 2. [prov.] To be late. காலக்ஷயம்--காலட்சயம், s. Passing one's time or days, காலக்கழிவு. காலக்ஷேபம்--காலட்சேபம் s. Passing one's time or days; circumstances, welfare, &c., காலங்கழிக்கை. 2. Means of subsistence, சீவனம். Wils. p. 216. KALAKSHEPA. 3. [among the Vaishnavas.] The reading of the sacred books, திருவாய் மொழியோதல். உமதுகாலட்சேபம் எப்படி. How do you do; i.e. how are your affairs? காலதருமம்--காலதன்மம், s. A small portion of time, காலத்தின்நுண்ணியபங்கு. காலநெடுமை--நெடுங்காலம், s. Length of time, a long time. காலநேமி, s. An Asura, ஓர் அசுரன். Wils. p. 217. KALANEMI. காலநேரம், s. Time in reference to the influences of planets upon the fortune, health, &c., of a person. காலநோக்காடு, s. [prov. in child-birth.] Natural and timely labor. காலந்தள்ள, inf. To pass one's days, to pass one's time, to maintain one's self, to live, காலம்போக்க. காலப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Discernment--as to the time of an event or the existences of a thing. It is one of the three பரிச்சேதம் modes of ascertaining facts. காலபரிபாகம், s. The maturity of the soul, or time for its attaining bliss, having eliminated its good and evil propensities. காலபேதம்--காலவித்தியாசம்--கால வேற்றுமை, s. Difference of time with respect to the changes it produces. காலபோகம், s. A crop of grain or fruits in the proper season. 2. The enjoyment or suffering resulting from previous moral actions, to which a living being at distant times is subjected, காலப் பயனுகர்வு. காலப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names of time--as year, month. 2. Nouns derived from names of time--as பங்குனன் (one born in the பங்குனி month). காலப்பெயர்ச்சி, s. Change of season or monsoon; unseasonable weather, கால விகற்பம். காலமயக்கம்--காலமயக்கு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses, காலவழு. 2. An allowed deviation in the use of tenses, காலவழுவமைதி. காலமலைவு, s. Confusion of statement in regard to time--as asserting that the lotus blooms in the evening, or the lily during the day. காலமல்லாக்காலம், s. An unfortunate, fatal time; an unseasonable time, அகாலம். காலமழை, s. Rain in the proper season, பருவத்திற்பெய்யுமழை. காலமறிய, inf. To know the times so as to adapt one's self to them, காலவகைய றிய. 2. To know things past, present or future intuitively or by apiritual sight --as yogis, காலவியற்கையறிய. காலமாறு, Morning by morning, every morning, காலைதோறும். (c.). காலமானம், s. [in arith.] Time measure. காலமிருத்து, s. Death at the destined season--as distinguished from accidental death, விதித்தகாலத்திலடையுமரணம். காலமே--காலத்தாலே. In the morning, early, betimes. காலம்பண்ண--காலம்பண்ணிப்போக, inf. To finish one's time, to die. காலம்பார்க்க, inf. To look or watch for a proper time or opportunity, சமயம் பார்க்க. காலம்புரள, inf. To present a manifest revolution--as in the order of things; to be irregular, deranged, &c.--as the events of a time--as toddy-drawers seen riding in palankeens, &c. காலம்போக்க, inf. To pass the times. 2. To while away time. காலவகை, s. Seasons, times, காலக் கூறுபாடு. 2. Circumstances depending on time, காலவேறுபாடு. காலவர்த்தமானம், s. Events of the times. காலவழக்கம், s. Customs of the times. காலவழு, s. [in gram.] An improper use of the tenses--as the past for the future, &c., காலக்குற்றம். காலவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Nouns of time or portions of time, used by metonymy for what is intimately connected with time--as கார்த்திகை, the name of a month, for a plant which mostly blossoms during the month. காலவிடைநிலை, s. [in gram.] Characteristics of tenses, காலத்தைக்காட்டுமிடை நிலை. They are 1. த், ட், ற், and இன் for the past. 2. ஆநின்று, கின்று and கிறு for the present. 3. ப், ல், for the future. There are some other characteristics-as மன், இசின், ய், இ, ன், &c. காலவிரைவு, v. noun. Swiftness or rapid flight of time. காலாகாலம், s. Times seasonable and unseasonable, auspicious and inauspicious, நற்காலந்துர்க்காலம். 2. One time or another, not often, not frequently. (c.) காலாக்கினி, s. The fire which is to destroy the world at the end of the great yuga; a deluge-fire said to be in reserve in the nethermost part of the earth. Wils. p. 218. KALAGNI. 2. One of the two-hundred and twenty-four புவ னம் under the regency of Kálágni. காலாக்கினியுருத்திரம், s. One of the thirty-two உபநிடதம். காலாக்கினியுருத்திரர், s. Rudra or the deity in the lowest region, in charge of the deluge-fire. There are ten subordinate Rudras, who resemble their chief. காலாந்தம், s. The end of time, கால முடிவு; [ex. அந்தம்.] காலாந்தரம், s. Intermediate space of time, process of time, காலநடை. 2. Meanwhile, காலவிடை; [ex அந்தரம், interval.] காலேச்சுரவாதம், s. The metaphysical philosophy which maintains that Time is God. காலோசிதம், s. A fit, proper time, உச் சிதகாலம்; [ex உசிதம்.] அந்தியகாலம், s. The time of death. ஆங்கால மெய்வருந்த வேண்டா வதுதானே தேங்காய்க் கிளநீர்போற் சேருமே, போங்காலம் காட்டானை தின்ற கனியதுபோ லாகுமே தேட்டாளன் றேடுந் தனம். Wealth shall or itself accumulate at the appointed time of increase, as the liquor within a cocoanut, and no toll is required; but at the fixed time for ruin, the riches of a hard-working man shall pass away like the contents of a woodapple eaten by an elephant. எக்காலமும். At what time soever, always. சாங்காலம், s. The time of death or ruin. திரிகாலம்--முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time, present, past, and future. 2.The three tenses of a verb. திரிசந்திகாலம். The three parts or divisions of the day: viz., காலை, morning. உச்சி, noon. மாலை, evening. புண்ணியகாலம், s. See under புண்ணி யம். போங்காலம், s. The time of separation or ruin. 155) *

kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். See வருடம். குருநாள், s. The eighth lunar asterism, பூசம். குருநாடிவிதி, s. A treatise on the ten tubular vessels in the system, and for the ascertainment of diseases by feeling the pulse, நாடிச்சாத்திரம். குருபாலப்பிரபோதிகை, s. One of the commentaries on the Sanscrit Amara Cosha. குருநோய்--குருவியாதி, s. The smallpox, வசூரி. குருபுறப்பட-குருக்காண-குருவார்க்க, inf. To take the small-pox. குருப்பிக்க, inf. v. n. [prov.] To shoot forth; to break out--as pimples, &c. குருமுகறன்--குருமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] One whose face in pock-pitted. குருவண்டு--குருப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of spotted wasp, ஓர்குளவி. குருவெறும்பு, s. A kind of large, red ant. See எறும்பு. குருவேர், s. A plant, the roots of which are very fragrant, ஓர்செடியின்வேர். 24)
