aṭukku (p. 8) s. A pile, row, tier, regular arrangement of goods or things, regular series, order, adjustment, system, வரி சை. 2. Orderly arrangements of subjects, the heads or topics in a writing or discourse, &c., எழுதுமுறை. 3. Four threads of yarn-in use among weavers, நூலடுக்கு. (c.) 4. Repetition of a phrase implying alarm, &c., with no other words intervening, அடுக்குச் சொல், as தீத்தீத்தீ, fire, fire, fire. (p.) 5. [in anat.] A layer, சிரேணி. அடுக்கடுக்காகவைக்க, inf. To arrange many things in rows, pile up in order. அடுக்கானகன்னி, s. A perfect woman. அடுக்குக்குலைக்க, inf. To put in disorder, as things in a row, pile, &c. அடுக்குக்குலைய, inf. To become disordered, deranged as business affairs, to go to decay as one's circumstances. அடுக்குத்தீபம், s. A kind of lamp in temples, used by the priests before the idol. அடுக்கத்தொடர், s. Repetition of a word or phrase two or three times, as, பாம்புபாம்பு. அடுக்குப்பண்ண, inf. To arrange, put in order, prepare. அடுக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. [prov.] To rehearse as stage players, previous to the public exhibition. (ஒத்திக்கைபார்க்க is used on the continent.) அடுக்குப்பானை, s. Pots arranged, especially in a cook-house, one upon another for various uses. அடுக்குமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmine, ஓர்மல்லிகை. அடுக்குமுள்ளி, s. A species of the முள்ளி shrub. அடுக்குமெத்தை, s. A couch with pillows placed one upon another. 2. A house built of different lofts, or stories. அடுக்கூமத்தை, s. A species of the ஊமத்தை. 13)

There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. To adorn, சிங்காரிக்க. அலங்காரப்பிரியன், s. Vishnu. அலங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Fine, elegant language, flattery. 33) *

ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

iṭai (p. 45) s. Middle, midst, centre, நடு. 2. The middle of a body, the waist, மருங்குல். 3. As இடைச்சொல்--a particle. 4. Interval of time, &c., நடுநேரம். 5. (p.) Place, room, space, position, situation, இடம். 6. A form of the seventh or locative case, ஏழனுருபு. 7. The side of a thing, place, quarter, region, பக்கம். 8. An elephant, யானை. 9. Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. (c.) நான்குவிரற்கிடை--நான்குவிரலி டை. Four fingers-breadth, thickness. முதலிடைகடை, Beginning, middle and end. 104)

iru (p. 50) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To sit, sit down, உட்கார. 2. To live, be alive, exist, உயிர்வாழ. 3. To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. They will remain here long. அதுமெய்யென்றிருந்தேன். I thought it was true. அவனிருந்தாகிறதென்ன? அவனிருந்தும்பயனெ ன்ன? Of what use is he? இருக்கை, v. noun. Sitting, உட் கார்ந்திருக்கை. 2. A seat, ஆசனம். 3. Being, a state, or condition of being--chiefly applicable to the human species, இருப்பு. 4. s. (p.) Residence, dwelling, situation, இருப்பிடம். 5. A town, village, ஊர்ப் பொது. இருப்பு, v. noun. Sitting, mode of sitting--as of ascetics, &c., இருக்கை. 2. Being, condition state of being--chiefly of the human species, நிலை. 3. s. Residence, abode, dwelling, வாசஸ்தலம். 4. The appropriate place of any person or thing, the place where a person or thing is established, உரியவிடம். 5. A seat, பீடம். 6. Surplus, balance in hand, remainder of cash in hand after an expenditure, கையிருப்பு. 7. Money in reserve, amount in a treasury, பொக்கசத்திருப்பு. 8. Remaining commodities, residue, மீந்திருப் பவை. 9. Stores, merchandise, wares, சரக்கிருப்பு. அவனிருந்த இருப்பிலே சம்பாதித்துக்கொண்டா ன். He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. He has got money in hand. இருப்பிடம், s. Habitation, place of residence, appropriate, customary or established place of a person or thing, உறைவிடம். 2. The seat, the posteriors, ஆசனம். இருப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To see how mush still remains in the store. 60) *

ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

iẕukku (p. 55) s. A fault, defect, deficiency, blemish, ஈனம். 2. Slackness, தளர்தல். 3. A failure, deviation, obliquity, defection, blunder, mistake, folly, தவறு. 4. (p.) Forgetfulness, மறதி 5. Baseness, meanness, degradation, தாழ்வு. 6. Disgrace, reproach, taunt, நிந்தை. 7. Falsehood, பொய். இழுக்குடையபாட்டிற்கிசைநன்று. A good metre will set off an indifferent poem. தன்குலத்துக்கிழுக்குவைத்தான். He has brought disgrace on his family or caste. இழுக்கற, inf. [used adverbially.] Free from imputation. இழுக்குச்சொல், s. Reproach, taunt. 2. Faulty expression, incorrect phraseology. இழுக்குடையான், s. A worthless or mean person. 39)

uḷ (p. 67) . The root of a symbolic verb signifying being, which, in poetic usage is complete in its inflections--as உளேன், or உள்ளேன், I exist, &c. 2. The third person singular of the inferior class (see உண்டு), and the participle with its appellatives are the only parts in common use. --Note. The participle and its derivations are joined to nouns to form adjectives and appellatives and to show the possession of the quality indicated--as உள்ளகாரியம், a real thing, fact. உளர். They are--as அவருளர். உள்ள, rel. part. Existing, which exists, is real, genuine, essential. உள்ளகதை, s. A real story, an authentic narrative, a fact, a reality. உள்ளது, appl. n. The truth, it is true, உண்மை. 2. That which exists, உண் டானது. உள்ளதற்குள். Among the few there are. உள்ளதற்குள்ளேயிவன்சமர்த்தன். He is the most competent among them. 2. He is tolerably clever. உள்ளதுசொல்லு. Speak the truth. உள்ளதுரியதெல்லாம். The whole of one's property to the last mite. உள்ளதைமறையாதே. Conceal not the truth. உள்ளதோஇல்லதோ? It is true or not? உள்ளநாளுள்ளமட்டும். All this time, or always--a phrase indicating dissatisfaction. உள்ளபடி. Truly, really as to right, according to the actual state. உள்ளபடிமுடியும். It will end right. உள்ளபணிவிடைசெய்வேன். I will do whatever service you have. என்னாயிசுள்ளநாள்மட்டும். As long as I live. உள்ளபசுமை, s. Real truth, ஐய மற்றஉண்மை. 2. Real prosperity, மெய்வா ழ்வு. உள்ளபிள்ளை, [vul. prov.] A child of rich parents--the opposite to வறிய பிள்ளை. உள்ளமை, s. [prov. prop. உண்மை.] Truth, reality, sincerity, probity. உள்ளவன், s. A moneyed man, a rich person, பொருளுடையவன். 2. A proprietor, உரியவன். குணமுள்ளமனிதன், s. A man of good disposition. பணமுள்ளவன், s. A man of money. உள்ளளவும், [prop. உள்ளவளவும்.] For ever, as long as aught shall be, the whole period of the world's existence, இருக்குமட்டும்.--Note. In this and similar sentences formed with this word, terms of universality are implied. நானுள்ளளவுமும்மைப்பிரியேன். I will not forsake you as long as I live. உள்ளார், s. Those who are (present, &c.), இருப்போர். மண்ணுள்ளார், s. Terrestrial inhabitants. விண்ணுள்ளார், s. The celestials. 53)

etir (p. 73) s. That which is opposite, in front, before, in presence of, over against, முன். 2. That which is opposed, is adverse, hostile, முரண். 3. Similitude, comparison, ஒப்பு. 4. Futurity, வருங்காலம். 5. Rivalry, competition, எதிரிடை. எதிரதுபோற்றல், v. noun. An author's adopting what is authorized by good usage though modern. See உத்தி. எதிரறை, s. An opposite room. எதிராக--எதிரே, adv. Before, opposite to, in front, &c. எனக்கெதிரே. Before me. சத்துருவிற்கெதிராகப்போதல். Encountering or meeting an enemy. எதிராளி--எதிரி, s. Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. A slanting timber forming a continued line with the ridge and uniting in an angle formed by the slanting hip-rafters on either end of a hipped or bungalo roof. எதிர்ச்சாட்சி, s. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. To be watchful, vigilant, attentive, looking steadfastly, நோக்கமாயிருக்க. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணாயிருக்கிறான். He is as dear or precious as one's eyes. கண்ணாரக்காண, inf. To see plainly, to see with one's own eyes, பிரத்தியட் சமாகக்காண. கண்ணிடுக்குதல், v. noun. Being sleepy, drowsy. கண்ணிதழ்--கண்ணிமை, s. Eyelid, கண்ணினதிமை. 2. A wink of the eye, கண்ணிமைப்பு. See இமை. கண்ணிமைக்க, inf. To wink. கண்ணிலி, s. A blind person, குரு டன். 2. (p.) Dhritarashtra, திரிதராட் டிரன். கண்ணிலேபூப்பட, inf. To have specks in the black of the eye. கண்ணிலொற்ற, inf. To apply a fomentation, a flower, &c., to the eye. கண்ணீர், s. Tears. ஏழைஅழுதகண்ணீர்கூரியவாளுக்கொக்கும். The tears of the poor are like a sharp sword. கண்ணீராக்கி, s. Crude camphor, பச்சைக்கருப்பூரம். கண்ணீருகுக்க--கண்ணீர்சொரிய --கண்ணீர்வடிக்க--கண்ணீர்விட, inf. To shed tears, கண்ணீர்சிந்த. கண்ணீர்ததும்ப--தளம்ப, inf. To have the eyes suffused with tears. கண்ணுக்கரசன், s. Blue vitriol, து ருசி. கண்ணுக்கினியான், s. The பொன் னாங்காணி plant. 2. The கரிசலாங்கண்ணி plant, lit. one pleasing to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன், s. A person dear to one as his own eyes. கண்ணுக்குத்தைக்க, inf. To attract the eyes, to arrest the attention. கண்ணுதல், s. Siva, whose forehead contains an eye, the frontal-eyed, சிவன். (p.) கண்ணுதலோன்வெற்பு, s. The same as இரசதமலை. கண்ணுராவி, s. A pitiable sight, a miserable condition deserving commiseration. கண்ணுலைமூடி, s. A rice-strainer. கண்ணுற, inf. To see, view, காண. 2. To reach, arrive at, இடத்தைச்சேர. கண்ணுறக்கம், s. Sleep, a nap, நித் திரை. கண்ணுறங்க, inf. To sleep, நித்தி ரைசெய்ய. கண்ணுறுத்த, inf. To smart as the eyes, from any foreign substance--as dust, ophthalmia, &c., கண்ணிலுறுத்த. என்கண்ணையுறுத்துகின்றது. Something hurts my eye. 2. My eye smarts from ophthalmia. கண்ணூறு--கண்ணேறு, s. The blight of the eyes, an unlucky look supposed to cause sickness, &c., திட்டி தோஷம். விண்ணேறுதப்பினாலுங்கண்ணேறுதப்பாது. One may escape a thunderbolt, but to escape an evil eye is impossible. மதன்கண்ணேறெய்தலுங்கழிந்ததோ. (Has the waist) become so attenuated through the influence of kama's eyes? கண்ணூறுகழிக்க, inf. To dispel the blight of an evil eye by prescribed ceremonies. கண்ணூறுபட, inf. To suffer or experience the ill effects of evil eyes. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Fascinating, bewitching, blighting, &c.--as by a glance, and otherwise, as in food looked on with an envious eye, &c., கண்ணூறு. கருப்புரவிளக்கமேந்திக்கண்ணெச்சில்கழித்திட் டாரே. They waved the lighted camphor and removed the blight of the eye. (நைட.) கண்ணெரிவு, v. noun. Smarting of the eyes from want of sleep or through intemperance. கண்ணெறிய, inf. To glance, க ண்ணாற்பார்க்க. 2. To cast libidinous glances, to look wistfully, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. கண்ணேணி, s. A bamboo ladder, மூங்கிலேணி. கண்ணேறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look intently or steadily on an object. 2. To look up straight forward, ஏறெடுத் துப்பார்க்க. கண்ணைக்காட்ட, inf. To indicate wishes by a glance. கண்ணைப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pluck out the eye. கண்ணைமூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க--கண் மூடிக்கொண்டிருக்க inf. To connive at. 2. To be indifferent about, to be careless. என்னைப்பாராமற்கண்மூடிக்கொண்டார். To look intently, gaze, to eye, see, look upon, பார்க்க. கண்ணோக்கு, v. noun. Gaze, glance, கண்பார்வை. கண்ணோட, inf. To run out--as the sight on an object of desire, to look at with desire, cast wistful or lustful glances, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. 2. To watch, look after, inspect, superintend, பார்வை யிட. 3. To examine cursorily--as a book, writing, &c., மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பார்க்க. 4. To be kind, benignant, gracious, to treat kindly, be indulgent, தயவாயிருக்க. 5. To be partial, to have the mind biased toward one, to yield to feelings of compassion, தாட்சிணியஞ்செய்ய.--Note. All the meanings have reference to sight as prompting to passion and action. உடையவன்கண்ணோடாப்பயிர், s. Growing corn not looked after by the owner. கண்ணோட்டம், s. A glance, a look, the scope of the sight, கடைக்கண்பா ர்வை. 2. Regard to persons, either in a good or bad sense, kindness as prompted at the moment, partiality, favoritism, glow of kind feelings toward a friend, reluctance to deny his request, &c., கடாட்சம். 3. Civility, complaisance, regard, மரியாதை. 4. Discerning by the eye, close examination, scrutiny, பார்வை யிடுகை. இவனவனிடத்திற்கண்ணோட்டம்வைத்தான். He was very kind to him. கண்திட்டம்--கண்மதிப்பு, s. Guess by the eye, or opinion from sight. கண்திட்டி--கண்திஷ்டி--கண்தீமை, s. The blight of the eye, திட்டிதோஷம். கண்திட்டிகழிக்க, inf. An eye-lid. கண்பரிகாரம், s. Doctoring the eyes, the profession of an oculist, கண்வை த்தியம். கண்பரிகாரி, s. An oculist, கண் வைத்தியன். கண்பாடு, s. Sleep, நித்திரை. (p.) கண்பாய்ச்சல், v. noun. A glance. கண்பார்க்க, inf. To examine precious stones, elephants, horses, &c., for sale, பரீட்சிக்க. 2. To cast a benignant look on one, கடாட்சிக்க. 3. To pity or compassionate, இரங்க. கண்பிடி, s. [prov.] A small jackfruit or a small bunch of palmyra or other fruit attached to a larger one. கண்புகைச்சல், v. noun. A disease of the eye. ஓர்நோய். 2. Dimness of sight from age, disease, கண்மங்கல். கண்புதைக்க. inf. To cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்பொத்த. (p.) 2. To weaken or prevent the sight--as dust, &c. கண்பூத்தல், v. noun. Failing--as the eyes by earnest looking, கண்மயங்கல். கண்பொங்க, inf. To form--as rheum in the eyes, குட்டினாற்கண்பொங்க. கண்பொத்த, inf. To stop the eyes with the fingers, to hoodwink, blindfold, கண்மூட. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek, to play at blindman's-buff, விழிமூடியாட. கண்பொறிதட்ட, inf. To flash --as the eyes in fainting, by a blow, &c., கண்கூச. 2. To be over-powered--as the sight by vivid lightning, brilliant gems, &c., கண்மழுங்க. கண்பொன்ற, inf. To have the sight diminished, dimmed by age, disease in the eyes, long application, கண் கெட. 2. [vul.] To be blear-eyed, கண் செம்ம. கண்போட, inf. To look on objects wistfully with an intention of securing them, to fall in love, இச்சிக்க. கண்மங்க, inf. To become dull, obscure, heavy--said of the eyes, கண் ணொளிகுறைய. கண்மடை, s. Inferior channels for water--as in gardens, சிறுமடை. கண்மட்டம்--கண்மட்டு--கண்ம திப்பு--கண்மதியம், s. Guess by the eyeas appears to the sight; done, wrought, leveled, &c., by sight. கண்மட்டவேலை, s. Work executed by the eye without the aid of a measure or model. கண்மணி--கண்விழி, s. The apple of the eye, கருமணி. என்கண்மணியே. My darling, lit. thou who art the apple of my eye. கண்மண்டை, s. The skull near the eyes. கண்மயக்கு, s. Fascination of the eyes, bewitching, captivating, கண்ணினா ல்மயக்குமயக்கு. கண்மயிர், s. The eye-lashes. கண்மருட்சி, s. The dazzling of the eye. கண்மருட்டு, s. Fascinating with the eye, கண்ணினாற்செய்யுமருட்டு. கண்மருந்து, s. Medicine for the eyes. 2. A collyrium for ornamenting the eyelids of females. கண்மலர், s. An ornament for the eyes of an idol, a gold or silver ornament to be placed over the eye of an idol and devoted to the temple, விக்கிரகங்க ட்கணியும்விழிமலர். கண்மறிக்காட்டல், v. noun. [prov.] Checking, forbidding, frowning on, or inviting by a signal of the eye. கண்மாயம், s. Ocular deception, illusion, sudden appearance and disappearance--as of a phantom, a thing stolen, &c., கண்ணுக்குத்தோன்றிமறைகை. கண்மின்ன, inf. To flash--as the eyes on fainting or by a blow. கண்மின்னியார்த்தல், v. noun. Growing dim as the eyes when one is dizzy. கண்முகிழ்க்க--கண்மூட, inf. To shut the eyes, cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்ணிமைசேர்க்க. 2. To become drowsy, go to sleep, தூங்க. 3. To die, சாவ. 4. To be careless, indifferent, unconcerned at any thing, கவலையில்லா திருக்க. கண்மூடிவிழிக்குமுன்னம். In less than a wink. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழிக்கிறவன். To break--as the eye of a needle, the rivet hole of a knife, ஊசிமுதலியவற்றின்கண்ணொடிய. 2. To form as butter in churning, வெண்ணெய் திரள. கண்விடுக்க, inf. To paint the black of the eyes in a picture, சித்திரப்பா வைக்குக்கண்வரைய. 2. To open the eyes of an idol giving it the appearance of sight, விக்கிரகத்துக்குக்கண்திறக்க. (சிந்தாமணி.) Watchfulness, circumspection, caution, விழிப்பாயி ருக்கை. கண்வினைஞர்--கண்வினையாளர், s. Smiths, mechanics, artisans, கம்மியர். (p.) கண்வெளித்தல், v. noun. Seeing clearly, having the sight restored after disease of the eyes or dimness. கண்வைக்க, inf. To be benignant, gracious, kind, &c., toward one, கிருபை வைக்க. 2. To look wistfully upon a thing, to desire, look at lustfully, விருப்பம் வைக்க. 3. To form as a hole in an ulcer, புண்ணிற்கண்வைக்க. அவளவன்மேற்கண்வைத்தாள். She cast her eyes upon him. வாக்குக்கண்--மாறுகண், s. A squint eye. மயிற்றோகைக்கண், s. The spangles in a peacock's tail. கடைக்கண், s. The corner of the eyes. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, s. A sideglance. 2. Regard, favor, condescension. சல்லடைக்கண், s. The holes of a sieve or strainer. ஓரக்கண், s. As வாக்குக்கண். ஓரக்கண்ணன், s. One who is squint-eyed. பருக்கண், s. The orifice of a boil. உடலக்கண்ணன், s. Indra who has his whole frame bespangled with eyes. (கல்லா.) (p.) இல்லிக்கண்ணன், s. One who cannot bear the light and contracts the eyes to shut it out. மாலைக்கண், s. A disease of the eye which causes the sight to fail in the dark. வலைக்கண், s. The meshes of a net. ஊற்றுக்கண், s. The orifice of a spring. பறைக்கண், s. The end of a drum. கொடுங்கண்--தறுகண்--வன்கண், s. Envy, invidiousness. ஆயிரங்கண்ணன், s. Indra who has a thousand eyes. (p.) கூசுகண், s. As சூகைக்கண். விரிகண், s. A sore in the eyelids which causes them to dilate. அவிகண், s. A variety of sore eyes. இழிகண், s. A disease of the eye which causes the eyelids to hang down. அழுகண், s. A complaint in the eye which causes a continual dropping of tears. சொறிகண், s. An itching complaint in the eyelids. சிம்புறுகண், s. A complaint in the eye causing the lids to come out in flakes. பூமியின்கண். In the earth. 13) *

koḷ (p. 147) --கொள்ளு, கிறேன், கொண் டேன், வேன், கொள்ள, v a. To take, receive with the hand, வாங்கிக்கொள்ள. 2. To contain, hold, comprehend, have, comprise, embrace, அடக்கிக்கொள்ள. 3. To buy, purchase, விலைக்குக்கொள்ள. 4. To accept, approve of, admit, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a wife, to marry, பெண்கொள்ள. 6. To take --as food, medicine, sleep, rest, &c., உணவு முதலியகொள்ள. 7. To conceive--as in the womb, in the mind or in the heart. 8. To get, to acquire, பெற்றுக்கொள்ள. 9. v. n. To be contained in, அடங்க. As an auxiliary to other verbs, கொள் denotes, continuation, certainly, &c., of the action, and that the fruit of it reverts to the agent-as படித்துக்கொள்ளுகிறான். He continues to study, குதிரையைவாங்கிக்கொண்டேன். I bought a horse for myself. The verb is generally found in composition with other words --as வாங்கிக்கொள்ள, பெண்கொள்ள, உட்கொள்ள, &c., and very rarely in the personal finite forms in common usage, except in the third meaning. கொள்வாருமில்லைகொடுப்பாருமில்லை.... There are none who receive, none who give. கொண்டிருந்துகுலம்பேசுகிறதா? Would it be proper to twit a family after you have taken a wife from it? கொண்டான், s. A husband, புருஷன். 2. A play as கொண்டல். See under கொண் டு, for other words. கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry, to convey; to take away. கொள்க, [obtative.] May take, accept, or may uderstand. உமதுசித்தத்தின்படிகொள்க. You may take it as you please. கொள்கலம், s. A vessel, a salver, a dish; a receptacle for sandal-paste, or other ointments, or for ornaments, &c., சாந்துமுதலியபெய்கலம். 2. A cup of palm leaf, or bamboo to eat from, பிழர. (சது.) A beggar's dish, இரப்போர்கலம். கொள்கை, v. noun. The act of taking, getting, &c. See, கொள், v. 2. Quality, nature, habit, state, குணம். 3. Liking, fondness, regard, attachment, intimacy, சினேகம். 4. Opinions, tenets, belief, கோ ட்பாடு. 5. Knowledge, instruction, அறிவு. அவருக்குமிவருக்குமிகுந்தகொள்கை. [prov.] They two are very intimate. கிழவியிவனோடேமிகுந்தகொள்கையாயிருக்கிறாள். The old woman is very fond of him. கொள்கொம்பு, s. A prop supporting vines. (R.) கொள்வனை--கொள்வனவு--கொள்வினை, v. noun. Buying, borrowing; taking receiving வியாபாரக்கொள்ளுகை. 2. Marrying a wife, பெண்கொள்ளுகை. கொள்வனைகொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Borrowing and lending. 2. Giving and receiving in marriage. 3. [vul. loc.] Taking, receiving; buying, borrowing, கொள்ளுகை. கொள்விலை--கொள்கிரயம், s. The first or prime cost, the sum paid for a thing exclusive of profit, &c., கொண்டவிலை. 2. [prov.] Purchase, purchased land or property, விலைக்குக்கொண்டது. 3. One of the three species of real property. See சீதனம் and பிதிரார்ச்சிதம். கொள்விலைக்காணி, s. [prov.] Land attained by purchase, as distinguished from lands by dowry and inheritance. கொள்விலைக்காரன், s. The purchaser of land, &c. கொள்வோன், s. One who buys, or one who accepts any thing. 2. (நன்.) a pupil, student, learner, கற்போன். கொள்ள, [adverbially.] While, when-as நான்வரக்கொள்ள, while I was coming. 2. Since, therefore, because, as இருக்கக்கொ ள்ள, since it is so. ஆகக்கொள்ள, in the phrase நாளையவன்வருவானாகக்கொள்ள, he will come tomorrow, therefore, [tarry.] 3. (Rott.) as கொள்க in the phrase கொள் ளாதநோய்கொள்ள, may you be seized with an insupportable disease--a malediction. 4. [prov.] More, further on, in or under --as கொஞ்சங்கொள்ளவார், pour out a little more; also in கொள்ளக்கொடு, insert a lever, or land, further in, further under, &c., or let a pair of scissors or pincers take a good hold; and in கொள்ளப்பிடி, take hold further in measuring cloth. கொளல்வினா, s. [in gram.] One of the six kinds of interrogation, implying a desire to obtain the thing mentioned --as அரிசியுளதோ, have you got any rice? wishing to buy some. கொள்ளல்--கொளல், v. noun. Taking, receiving, obtaining, buying, &c. கொள்ளற்பாடு, [prov.] Estimation, worth, honor, மேன்மை. கொள்ளாதசெய்கை, s. A fragrantly wicked, unbearable act. கொள்ளாதசிறை, s. One assiduous as a slave--spoken of an affectionate, faithful wife, or a dependent. கொள்ளாதபுகழ், s. Unbounded praise. கொள்ளாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Excessiveness transcedency, pre-eminence in good or evil. 2. Disagreement, discordance, enmity, பகை. வாய்கொள்ளாப்பேச்சு. Language not proper to be used. கொள்ளார், s. Haters, enemies, பகை வர்.
