akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. The chattering of old people, கிழவர்வார்த்தை. கிழக்குதிரை, s. An old horse. கிழக்கோலம். The appearance or marks of age. கிழடு, s. [vul.] An old thing, commonly said of animals, trees, and contemptuously of a person, வயதுமுதிர்ந்தது. கிழடன், s. An old man; an old chap, in contempt. கிழட்டுப்பசு, s. An old cow. கிழத்தனம், s. Old age; manners or habits of old people. கிழப்பிணம், s. An old fellow, in contempt; a living carcass. கிழமாடு, s. An old ox or cow. கிழவன், s. (pl. கிழவர்.) An old man, an aged man, மூப்புடையோன். 2. The second of the twenty-seven lunar asterisms or nacshatras, or the day during which the moon is in the nacshatra, பரணி. குடுகுடுகிழவன், s. A very old man. கிழவி, s. koṭumai (p. 146) s. Cruelty, tyranny, oppression, violence inhumanity, கொடுங்கோன் மை. 2. Severity, harshness, vehemence, impetuosity, barbarousness, குரூரம். 3. Crookedness, flexture, obliquity, வளைவு. (Sans. Kota, crookedness.) 4. roughness, harshness, uncouthness, frightfulness, கோ ரம். 5. Vileness, turpitude, wickedness, baseness, flagrance, flagitiousness, தீமை. 6. Injustice, அநீதி. 7. Sharpness, poignancy, severity, கூர்மை. 8. adj. Satirical, offensive, injurious, கடுமை.--Note. In most of its meanings, bad or injurious qualities are implied. It differs from கடு மை, in Several meanings. Like that and similar abstract nouns, it drops the termination and combines with other nouns as an adjective, according to rule. வறுமைகொடிது. Poverty is cruel. வயிற்றுக்கொடுமையினால்வருந்துகிறான். He is vexed by want of food. கொடிது--கொடியது, appel. noun. That which is cruel, கொடுமையானது. கொடியகாடு, s. A wild, inhospitable desert. கொடியகூற்றன், s. The cruel Yama. கொடியசண்டாளர், s. Desperate wretches. கொடியபிறவி, s. Vile births--as evils to which souls are subject; horrid transmigration--as keeping the soul from union with the deity. கொடியமனம், s. A cruel or envious disposition. 2. The evil heart. கொடியமுகம், s. A frightful visage; a fierce countenance. கொடியமோசம், s. Flagrant errors. கொடியவஞ்சனை, s. Base turpitude. 2. A desperate fraud; a base imposition. கொடியவன், s. A vile wretch, a hardhearted cruel man. கொடியவீரன், s. A kind of prepared arsenic, கோடாசொரிபாஷாணம். (Rott.) கொடியவெப்பம், s. Oppressive, vehement heat of weather or climate, &c. 2. Poignant qualities of medicines. கொடியோன், s. A cruel man. 2. The plant, கற்றாழை, Aloes. கொடுங்கண், s. An evil eye, a cruel eye. கொடுங்காலம், s. A time of dearth, scarcity, drought, &c. 2. A time of general suffering. 3. A time of oppression, cruelty, tyranny. கொடுங்கோல், s. A despotic government or rule; tyranny. (lit.) a crooked sceptre--as opposed to செங்கோல், a right sceptre, அரசின்முறைகேடு. கொடுங்கோள், s. Atrocious backbiting, disgraceful calumny, அவதூறு. கொடுங்கோன்மை, s. Despotism, tyranny; injustice, oppression, அரசின் முறைகேடு. கொடுசூரி--கொடுஞ்சூரி, s. [in gram.] The connection of a word with the பயனிலை by omitting a particle, வேற்று மையுருபுமுதலியதொக்குநிற்றல்.--It embrasces six varieties; 1. வேற்றுமைத்தொகை, the omission of the sign or from of the case, as பொன்கொடுத்தான், for பொன்னைக்கொடுத் தான். 2. வினைத்தொகை, a verb without the sign of the tense, combined with a noun, as கொல்புலி for கொன்றபுலி, கொல்கின்றபுலி, கொல்லும்புலி. 3. பண்புத்தொகை, omission of the adjective sign ஆகிய or ஆய in combining the qualifying epithet with the noun, as கருங்குவளை for கருமையாகியகுவளை, or two nouns in apposition, as ஆதிபக வன். 4. உவமைத்தொகை, the combination of two words with the omission of the sign of comparison, as பான்மொழி for பால் போலுமொழி. 5. உம்மைத்தொகை, omission of the particle உம், as கபிலபாணர் for கபிலனு ம்பாணனும்; also இராப்பகல் for இராவும், பகலும். --Note. In this combination. there is commonly no reduplication. 6. அன்மொ ழித்தொகை, a metonomy or omission of a word, commonly the name of a person, immediately after any of the five preceeding ellipses, as பொற்றொடி. for பொற் றொடியையுடையாள், the golden braceletdamsel. தொகைநிலைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem consisting of a fixed, even number of verses, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். தொகைநிலைத்தொடர்மொழி, s. As உவ மைத்தொகை. (R.) தொகைநிலையுருவகம், s. [in rheto.] A perfect metaphor, ஓரலங்காரம். தொகைபடுவது, appel. n. Contraction of words, as தொகப்படுவது. தொகைபார்க்க, inf. To sum of cast up the amount. (c.) தொகைபூட்ட, inf. [prov.] To balance accounts, to strike a balance, கணக்குச்சரிக் கட்ட. 2. As தொகைதைக்க. தொகைப்படுத்த--தொகையாக்க, inf. To make up an even number. 2. To make a large sum. 3. To sum up; to reduce to heads. தொகைப்பிசகு--தொகைமோசம், s. An error in a reckoning. 2. (fig.)
