To abide, reside, dwell, sojourn or stay in an appropriate place--as men in houses--beasts in the forest--fishes in water, &c., தங்க. 4. To be, wait, remain, be present, be at hand, சமுகத்திலிருக்க. 5. To be in reserve, in store, to remain--as an overplus, மீந்திருக்க. 6. To be ready, prompt, waiting for any duty or project, to be on the point of acting, going, &c., ஆயத்தமாயிருக்க. 7. To settle in a place, become fixed, established, நிலைபெற. 8. To last, remain, continue, endure, நீடி க்க. (c.) With என்று prefixed, it expresses expectation, desire, &c.--as வருவானென்றி ருக்கிறோம். We expect him. In the past tense with the gerund of a verb it serves to express the plu-perfect tense of that verb--as வந்திருந்தான். He had come. The gerund is often used with the locative and expresses the idea of procession--as நகரத்திலிருந்துநீங்கினான். He departed from the city. Sometimes இருந்து is an expletive (அசைச்சொல்)--as எழுந்திருந்தான். He is risen. இரு இரு. Wait, wait. 2. Sit down. இருக்கச்சொல்லியும்போய்விட்டான். Although I told him to wait, he went away. இருக்கட்டும் இருக்கட்டும். Let it be (emphatically). இருக்கிறதவ்வளவுதான். That is all there is. இருந்தல்லவோபடுக்கவேண்டும். Is it not necessary to sit before lying down? a phrase used to express the necessity of caution or deliberation in any pursuit. இருந்தாற்போலே செத்துப்போனான். He died unexpectedly. இருந்திருந்துகாரியமிறுகிக்கொண்டது. The case has at length assumed a serious aspect. மீன்பிடிக்க இருக்கிறான். He is about to go afishing. அவனின்னமிருக்கிறானா? Is he still alive? Is he still there, not gone yet? காரியமிப்படியிருக்கிறது. Such is the state of affairs. அந்தத்துரையிருக்கிறநாளிலே. During the period of that governor. நெடுநாளிருப்பார்கள். They will live long. 2. He acquired his wealth in one place; i. e. without running hither and thither. உன்னிடத்திலின்ன மிருப்பென்ன? How much still remains in your hand (in money or goods)? அவனிடத்திலிருப்பிருக்கிறது. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. To become instrumental to, ஏதுவாக. 11. To remove from a dwelling, lodging, village, &c., குடியெழும்ப. 12. To rise in price, விலையேற. அவனுக்குக்கையெழவில்லை. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf. To depart, to go to meet a person. எழுந்தேற்றம், s. A Roman catholic procession, உற்சவம். 2. Pride, selfconsequence, arrogance, பெருமை. 3. Rashness, presumptuousness, துணிவு. எழுமுகனை, s. The very beginning of a process, or period, தொடக்கம். எழுவான், s. The east, the place of sun-rising, oriens, கிழக்கு, eastern--opp. to படுவான். எழுவான்றொடங்கிப்படுவான்மட்டும். The special servants in the above are the barber, washerman, black-smith, carpenter and grave-digger. குடிமதிப்பு, s. Assessment, valuation of property for taxation. குடிமார்க்கம்--குடிமுறை, s. Domestic life. 2. Proper conduct as a householder. குடிமிராசி--குடிமிராசு, s. The right or privilege of a hereditary occupant. குடிமிராசிகொடுக்க, inf. To endue with particular மிராசு privileges. குடிமை, s. Customs or manners of the higher classes, மேற்குலத்தார்நடக்கை. 2. Lineage, family, descent. குடிவரலாறு. 3. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. tur (p. 249) s. A prefix used in combination signifying evil, ill, bad, deficient; it is often changed to ற், before the hard letters, to ன் before the soft, as துன்மார்க்கம். Fordableness, ford, தாண்டுதுறை.-- The நிலை, (attitudes) in archery are; 1. பைசாசம், standing with one leg straight and the other bent, as devils are said to stand; 2. மண்டலம், standing with both knees bent out; 3. ஆலீடம், standing with the right knee bent out, and the left foot advanced; 4. பிரத்தியாலீடம், standing with the left knee bent and the right foot advanced. (சது.)--Note. Some authorities give a fifth posture, சமபாதம், standing with the feet even. நிலையுரியாய்ச்சீலையையுரிந்தான். He stripped or made himself naked. நிலையைவிட்டால்நீச்சு. Changing place, principles or religion, being proselyted, இடமாறுதல். 2. [in gram.] Being changed in place--as letters, in words, as வைகாசி for வைசாகி, the latter being according to the original, சொல்லினெழுத்துமா றுதல். நிலைமொழி, s.
