āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. ikkṭṭu (p. 45) s. Straits, distress, straitened circumstances, being straitened for room, poverty, இடுக்கண். 2. Impediment, obstacle, difficulty, தடை. (c.) அவன்மிக இக்கட்டுப்படுகிறான். He is greatly distressed. 18)

uṭai (p. 59) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To become broken--as a vessel; to crack, burst, break in pieces, split, to be fractured--as the skull, &c.; to break with force suddenly, to break or burst open--as a bank or shore; to break open--as a letter or seal, &c.; to be broken--as the skin; to be hurt--as by a wound, தகர. 2. To become broken--as the ranks of an army, to be discomfited, to retreat before the foe, இரிய. 3. To become broken--as the heart with grief, to be disheartened, dispirited, dejected, alienated, &c., to be in despair, மனம்நெகிழ. 4. To fall below in competition, rivalry or comparison, தாழ. 5. To be reduced in circumstances, to become poor, குறைய. 6. To effloresce, open, burst--as a flower, to blossom, மலர. 7. To become untwisted, முறுக்கவிழ. 8. Clothes, garments, vesture, dress, வஸ்திரம். உடைநடைபாவனை, s. The mode of dress, the gait, the manner, external appearance. உடையல், s. Any thing broken, a breach, a fracture. உடையல்நெரியல், s. Things cracked and broken. உடைவாள், s. A short scimiter, an accoutrement or article of equipage, சுரிகை. உடைவு, v. noun. A breach, disruption, eruption, infraction, crack, fracture, தகர்வு. 2. Being routed, a discomfiture, defeat, இரிவு. 3. Debility, brokenness of constitution, தளர்வு. 4. [with appropriate words prefixed.] Dispiritedness, dejection, broken-heartedness, despair, மனநெகிழ்ச்சி. 5. Reduction of circumstances from wealth to poverty, கேடு. மனமுடைவானவன், s. A dejected or broken-hearted person. 101)

uṭai (p. 59) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. For this meaning see முரிக்க, ஒடிக்க, &c. தண்ணீருடைத்துப்பாய்கிறது. The water has broken (the dam) and flows out. பல்லுடைப்பேனென்றான். He said, I will break your teeth. கட்டுடைக்க, inf. To burst an embankment--as water. பெண்மையுடைக்கும்படை, s. The weapon that dissolves female continency. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To take much pains, mentally--as in abstruse calculations, intricate business. உடைப்பு, v. noun. A breaking, a breach, the bursting of a bank, உடை க்கை. 2. s. A channel out or broken through a dam in a field, disruption, உடைந்தஅறுவாய். 3. Weakness, தளர்ச்சி. தலையுடைப்பு, v. noun. A trouble, some intricate employment. 102)

A divine permission suggested in dreams, or revealed by inspiration, தேவோத்தரவு. அவனுக்குக்கதிர்காமத்திற்குப்போகஉத்தரவுகிடைத் தது. He has obtained divine permission to go on a pilgrimage to Cathirgamam (a place sacred to Soobramania). உத்தரவுகேட்க, inf. To ask leave. உத்தரவுகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission. உத்தரவுசெய்ய, inf. To grant permission, privileges, &c. உத்தரவுசொல்ல, inf. To give leave. உத்தரவுச்சீட்டு, s. A passport, permit, விடுதலைப்பத்திரிகை. 2. A certificate of right, permission, privilege, authority, அதிகாரப்பத்திரிகை. உத்தரி, s. A horse, குதிரை. (p.) உத்தரி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To make satisfaction, indemnify, compensate, atone for, expiate, ஈடுசெய்ய. 2. To bear, sustain, experience, to endure what is deserved, சகிக்க. 3. To pay debts, liquidate, to give satisfaction, கடன்செலுத்த. 4. To reply to, answer, state arguments on one's behalf, நியாயங்காட்ட. 5. To guarantee, உத்தரவாதஞ்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To suffer by disease, poverty, age, &c., அழுந்த. வியாதியிலேகிடந்துத்தரிக்க, To lie suffering in disease. சமுசாரப்பொறுப்பையுத்தரிக்க. To sustain the burden of a family. நாலுபேர்சமுகத்திலேயுத்தரித்தாலல்லோதெரியும்.... The merit of the parties will appear by a public discussion. அவனிடத்திலிருந்தென்னாலுத்தரிக்கக்கூடாது. I could not (of cannot) endure to live with him. இந்தப்பாதகமெப்போதுதானுத்தரித்துத்தீரும். O! when will the effects of this enormity be done away by suffering. உத்தரிக்கப்படாதது, appel. n. That which is intolerable, insufferable. 2. That which cannot be expiated. உத்தரிக்கிறஸ்தலம், s. The Romish purgatory, a place of atonement or retribution. நியாயமுத்தரிக்க, inf. To state arguments, to argue. 2. To reply in argument. உத்தரிப்பு, v. noun. Sufferings, afflictions--as retribution for sins of former births, சகிப்பு.--Note. All the meanings of the verb are equally applicable, but this is the most common. 34) *

ulai (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To harass, vex, agitate one--as a demon; to distress as a fever, &c., அலைக்க. 2. To ruin, injure, impoverish, reduce, or emaciate one--as a disease, கெடுக்க. 3. To disorder, derange one`s circumstances, to unsettle, கலைக்க. 4. To ruin by seduction, desertion, &c., to injure another's character, ruin a person, a family, &c., சீரழிக்க. 5. To put to the rout, discomfit, முறியடிக்க. 6. To cause the mind to fluctuate, மனதைக் கலக்க. 7. To ruin property--as a house, furniture, lands, &c., ஆஸ்தியைக்கெடுக்க. பேயவனையுலைத்துப்போட்டது. eṇmai (p. 73) s. [a contr. of எளிமை.] Lowness of rank, inferiority, despicbleness, poverty. 2. Pitiableness, a state deserving of, or calling forth pity, பரிதாப நிலை. 3. Easiness of acquisition, access, accomplishment, facility, இலேசு. (p.) உவனைப்பொருவதுவுமெண்மையதுவோ. Is it easy to contend with him in battle? (ஸ்காந்.) எண்மையன், s. eḷimai (p. 75) s. Despicableness, meanness, lowness of rank, circumstances, character, &c., நீசத்துவம். 2. Pitiableness, exciting compassion, இரங்கப்படத்தக்கதன்மை. 3. Weakness, பலவீனம். 4. Easiness, facility, being easy to effect, acquire, attain, endure, to be understood; easiness of access, எளிது. 5. Solitariness, தனிமை; [ex எள்.] எளிஞர்--எளியர்--எளியார்--எளி யோர், s. The low, mean, destitute, the poor, தரித்திரர். எளிதரவு, [impr. for. எளிவரல்.] Indigence, poverty, despicableness, cringing, தரித்திரம். 2. Lowness, humility, தாழ்மை. எளிது, s. [impr. எளிசு.] Being easy of execution, acquisition, &c., இலேசு. எளிதானகாரியம், s. A trifling thing, a trivial affair, a thing easily understood. எளியகுடி, s. Poor, destitute inhabitants. 2. A family low in rank. எளியகொடை, s. Unworthy gifts, presents unsuitable to the persons to whom they are made. எளியது, s. That which is despicable, low trifling, &c., எளிமையானது. எளியவன்--எளியன், s. A man of low caste, a person poor, destitute, mean, &c. எளியவன்பெண்டாட்டியெல்லாருக்கும்மைத்துன ச்சி. The wife of a poor man is free of access to every body. எளியாரைவலியார்கேட்பின் வலியாரைத்தெய்வங் கேட்கும். If the powerful oppress the weak, the deity will require it of them. எளியவிலை, s. Low price. எளியவேலை, s. Low, menial work. கைக்கெளியது, s. That which is portable, small, easily carried, stolen, secreted, managed, as a child, &c. தாளையேதரமறிகிலாதெமக்கெளிதருசிவப்பிரகாசன். The guru (Sivaprakasa) who readily admits us to his feet; i. e., he is ready to grant our desires (சத.) 24)

evvm (p. 74) s. Affliction, distress, sorrow, துன்பம். 2. Incurable disease, lingering sickness, தீராநோய். 3. Inferiority, degradation, meanness, இகழ்ச்சி. 4. Lonesomeness, solitude, தனிமை. (p.) இலனென்னுமெவ்வமுரையாமையீதல். Giving without disgracing one's self by complaints of poverty. (குறள்.) எவ்வநோய், s. Incurable disease. (குறள்.)

ēẕai (p. 79) s. A poor, indigent person, a poor wretch, an object of pity, one that is helpless, &c., வறியன். 2. An ignorant person, one of weak intellects, and pitiable. அறிவிலான். 3. Simple, harmless, inoffensive person. பேதை. 4. A woman, பெண். The use of this word often shows pity in the speaker. ஏழைபேச்சுஅம்பலத்துக்கேறுமா. Will the entreaties of the poor be taken up in the assembly of the great? ஏழையழுத கண்ணீர் கூரியவாளொக்கும். The tears of the poor resemble sharp swords. ஏழைக்குறும்பு, s. Deceitful purposes concealed under the guise of poverty. ஏழைச்சனங்கள், s. Poor people. ஏழைத்தனம்--ஏழைத்தன்மை, s. Want of power, pusillanimity, a poor, pitiable state, எளிமை. ஏழைஎளியவர்கள், s. Poor, miserable people. ஏழைமை--ஏழமை, s. Ignorance, simplicity, அறியாமை. 2. Timidity, pusillanimity, want of fortitude and energy, powerlessness, cowardice, effeminacy, பேதமை. 3. Poverty, wretchedness, வறுமை. தோழனோடுமேழைமைபேசேல். Disclose not your defects even to your friend. ஏழைமைகாட்ட, inf. To be timid, fearful, yielding, effeminate, cowardly. 2. To pretend to be poor, to feign poverty. ஏழைமைத்தனம், s. Lowliness, meanness, poverty. ஏழைமைப்புத்தி, s. Ignorance, foolishness, want of discretion, prudence, &c., அறியாமையுள்ளபுத்தி. 75) *

otukku (p. 82) கிறேன், ஒதுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒதுக்க, v. a. To cause to recede or retire, to take or put on one side or out of the way, as the hair--as cattle, &c., meeting one in the road, to drift floating or other bodies to the shore, to push into a corner, to one side, to a hedge, &c.--as dry leaves, &c., to shove away, ஒதுங்கச்செய்ய. 2. To take under shelter as a protege or one needing aid, to protect, to shelter as a bird its young. to brood, சேர்க்க. 3. To gather or tuck up the clothes--as in pass ing through a river, &c., வஸ்திரத்தையொ துக்க. 4. To despatch a business, to settle an affair, or thing in hand so as to get it out of the way, to pay arrears, make a final settlement, to settle amicably, கடன்தீர்க்க. சேவல்சிறகொதுக்குகின்றது. The cock shows its gallantry by walking round the hen with one wing extended to the ground. அவனெல்லாவற்றையுமொதுக்கிப்போட்டான். He squandered all his property. பட்சிசிறகுகளைக்கோதிக்கோதியொதுக்கும். Birds adjust their feathers with their beaks. திரைமுத்துக்களையொதுக்கிற்று. The waves washed the pearls ashore. என்பயிருக்குந்தண்ணீரொதுக்கு. Make the water run into my field also. கப்பலைக்குடாக்கடலிலொதுக்கினான். He ran the ship into harbor. காரியத்தைத்தங்களிலொதுக்கிக்கொண்டார்கள்..... They have settled the affair amicably without going to law. கோழிகுஞ்சுகளைச்செட்டைகளுக்குள்ளொதுக்குகின் றது. The hen protects its chickens under its wings. காற்றொதுக்கிக்கொண்டுபோயிற்று. The wind has drifted or driven it away to a corner, a hedge, the shore, &c. ஒதுக்கிப்போட, inf. To settle. ஆடுமாடொதுக்க, inf. To take cattle to shelter from rain. 2. To separate flocks of cattle which have been feeding. மயிரையொதுக்க, inf. To adjust the hair with the hand, smoothing it back, out of the way. 2. To shave the margin of the hair. புடவையொதுக்க, inf. To tuck or gather up the clothes. ஆள்களையொதுக்க, inf. [in com. usage.] To kill people. 2. To impoverish. பொருளையொதுக்க, inf. To get away one's property by unfair means, by little and little. முன்றானையொதுக்க, inf. To gather up the front of the cloth--as a woman. கரையிலொதுக்க, inf. To cast on shore. 5)

Curry stuff, spices, &c., drugs, medicines, &c., sold in the bazaar, கடையில்விற்கப்படுஞ்சரக்கு. கடைச்சன், s. The youngest son, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைஞர், s. The laboring caste in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். கடைதலைப்பூட்டு, s. An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. (p.) கடைத்தடம், s. Gate-way, வாயில். (p.) கடைத்தரம், s. The last class, the lowest or worst kind, கீழ்த்தரம். கடைத்தலை--கடைத்தலைவாயில்-கடைத்தலைவாய்தல், s. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s.
