aṭi (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beat, lash, smite, scourge, stamp, blow or beat as wind, வீச. 2. To defeat, overcome, wash away, carry away as waves, flowing water, &c., to flap, (as with wings) மோத. 3. [vul.] To kill, slay, slaughter, கொல்ல. 4. To fasten, make firm, drive in, அறைய. 5. To act with force and energy, make thorough work of, முயற் சியுடன்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To emit as a scent, வாசனையடிக்க--Note. This word joined to other verbs increases their intensity, as, மழையடித்துப்பெய்கிறது, It rains very hard. பேச்சிலேயடித்துவிட்டான், He confuted by argument,--spoke with fluency and overwhelming eloquence. அடித்துச்சொல்லிக்கொண் டுபோ, Speak fast, forcibly, fluently, &c. Added to neuter infinitives, it makes them active, as, சிதறடிக்க, to disperse. அடிகாற்று, s. [prov.] A very powerful wind, a strong gale, a tempest. அடித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To beat one's self. அவனுக்கு அதிஷ்டம் அடிக்கிறது. Good fortune abounds to him. 4)

āṭu (p. 38) கிறேன், ஆடினேன், வேன், ஆட, v. n. To move, wave, shake, vibrate, swing, அசைய. 2. To dance, play, sport. gesticulate, to act a part in play, கூத்தாட. 3. (p.) To wash, bathe, play in water, குளிக்க. 4. To war, fight, join in battle, பொர. 5. To copulate, புணர. 6. [in combination.] To do, to act, செய்ய. 7. To speak, சொல்ல. பணத்துக்காடுகிறான். He is urgently soliciting money. ஆடவை, s. Place of dancing, நிருத்தசபை. ஆடி, s. A dancer. ஆடித்திரிய, inf. To make much ado about a thing. 2. to go around or be too much in company. ஆடுகால், s. The supporters of a lever for a well-sweep. ஆடுதொடை, s. The inner fleshy part of the thigh. ஆடுமாலை, s. [prov.] A gay, lively, laughing girl, young woman. ஆடல், v. noun. Moving, shaking, rocking, &c. 2. Fighting, battle, war. 3. Being powerful. 4. Victory. 5. Playing. 6. Coition. 7. Dancing. 8. Washing, bathing. 9. Boasting, friendly word or conversation. 1. Saying. ஆடல்பாடல், s. Singing and dancing. ஆடற்றரு, s. A dancing song used in comedies. ஆட்டம், v. noun. Motion, vibration, agitation, vacillation, rocking, swinging, rolling or pitching (at sea, &c.), அசைவு. 2. Dance, play, game, prank, an act of play, a turn-about, a turn, once playing the game, விளையாட்டு. 3. Likeness, the assumption of a character, profession, conduct, shape in imitation, தன்மை. 4. Moving about, energy, vigor, action, முயற்சி. (c.) அங்கேபோக ஆட்டமாடுகிறான். He insists on going there, (contrary to advice.) இந்த ஆட்டத்துக்கெல்லாமவனசையான். He will not be moved by this agitation. அவன் ஆட்டந்தீர்ந்தது. He power, bustle, agitation, harassing, &c. has come to an end. அவனிரண்டாட்டம் விளையாடினான் ஓராட்டந் தோற்றுப்போனான். He played two games and lost one of them. ஆட்டமடித்தல், v. noun. A play among children in which the புள்ளு, or small stick, being swung round so as to fly t a distance, is struck by the கிட்டி, or larger stick. ஆட்டமெடுக்க, inf. To enter on a rash or odd enterprise, to beat another in the above play. 10)

irākkatar (p. 50) --இராட்சதர், s. One of the two classes of foes to the Devas or genii, sometimes improperly called giants. They appear to be of various descriptions, being either powerful Titans in a preternatural form--as Ravana and others--or mischievous and cruel goblins, demons, vampires or fiends, haunting cemeteries, devouring human beings, &c., அரக்கர். Wils. p. 699.RAKSHASA. இராக்கதகணம், s. A set of demons --as Rakshasas one of the eighteen classes. இராக்கதமணம், s. See மணம். இராக்கதி, s. A female fiend. இராக்ஷதகிர்த்தியம், s. The sea is high, rough. காற்றுரமாயிருக்கிறது. The wind is high, boisterous. உரகடல்--உரசமுத்திரம், s. A boisterous sea, a sea generally rough. உரங்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To pound and harden the earth around trees newly set, பலமுறச்செய்ய. உரங்கொள்ள, inf. To thrive, grow strong--as the wind; to get strength, become boisterous--as the sea, பலங்கொள்ள. 2. To exert strength, &c., வலியுண்டாக. 3. To be hardened, indurated, obdurate, கடினமுற. உரங்கொண்டெறிந்து. Throwing with force. காய்ச்சலுரங்கொண்டுகாய்கின்றது. The fever rages and burns. உரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To exert influence, take effect, produce, effect--as arguments, பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To grow strong, வலியுற. 3. To thrive--as vegetables, &c., பலப்பட. அவரெடுத்தகாரியங்களிலொன்றுமுரஞ்செய்யவில் லை. He has been successful in nothing that he has undertaken. உரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To animate, to encourage. உரமண், s. Hard, ungenial soil. உரமாய்நிற்க, inf. To stand fast, immovable. உரமாய்ப்பெய்கிறமழை, s. A heavy rain. உரமானசத்தம், s. A loud sound. உரமெடுக்க, inf. To remove a particular ailment incident to infants. உரம்போட, inf. To manure land, எருப்போட. 2. A hot sun. உரப்பிக்க, inf. To make firm, to harden, indurate, confirm. உரப்பு, v. noun. intenseness, force, strength, firmness, compactness, வலி. 2. Coarseness, thickness, roughness--as of cloth, paper, leaves, &c.; stiffness, hardness--as of rice not well boiled, or of the stomach when overcharged, or when food does not digest, திண்மை. உரப்பானநிலம், s. Firm, hard (ungenial) land--as உரத்தநிலம். உரப்பானபுடைவை, s. Thick, coarse cloth. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், s. A hardhearted man. 2)

urupu (p. 65) s. Form, shape, வடிவம். 2. [in grammar.] A class of particles comprising four kinds, viz.: 1. வேற்றுமையு ருபு, the particles which form the declensions. 2. வினையுருபு, those that form the inflections of verbs including three species, (a) விகுதி, verbal terminations. (b.) இடை நிலை, characteristics of tense and several other intervening particles in the formation of verbs, derivative nouns, &c. 3. சாரியை, auxiliary, component particles employed in the formation of the two classes of verbs. 4. ஒப்புருபு, particles of terms of comparison. 5. The relative participles, ஆகிய, ஆன, &c., affixed to nouns to make adjectives of them. உருபுத்தொகை, s. The suppression of the characteristics of the cases --as மரநுனி. உருபுப்புணர்ச்சி, s. Sand'hi--the union of the particles of inflections with nouns and pronouns, வேற்றுமையுருபுமுதலிய புணர்கை. உருபுமயக்கம், s. The use of one case for another--as the dative for the local ablative, &c., வேற்றுமையுருபுமாறுகை. அமுதம்பூவையைக்கிள்ளையையருத்தி. Feeding the minor and parrot with milk--here the objectives are used for the dative. (நைட.) உருபுமாலை, s. Declension of nouns. உருபுவிரி, s. The expression of the case--as மாத்தினுனி. உவமையுருபு, s. A particle of comparison--as மதிபோலுமுகம், face like the moon. சொல்லுருபு, s. The use of a word for a particle representing the case--as, தடிகொண்டடித்தான், He beat with a stick-here கொண்டு is used for ஆல்; அவனைக்காட் டிலும்வலியன். This person is more powerful than the other. 23) *

uẕu (p. 67) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், உழ, v. a. To plough, ஏருழ. 2. [with the impersonal terminations.] To root up--as pigs, நிலத்தைக்கிளைக்க. பன்றிநிலத்தையெல்லாமுழுதுபோட்டது. The hogs have ploughed up all the field. உழக்கோல், s. A goad used to drive oxen when ploughing. உழத்தி, s. (plu. உழத்தியர்.) A female of the ploughman caste. See உழவர். உழத்திப்பாட்டு, s. A kind of poem. See பள்ளு. உழுதகாடு, s. A ploughed highland. உழுதநிலம், s. Ploughed land. உழுதுண்போர், s. Those who cultivate fields belonging to others and subsist upon a share of the produce. 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். உழுதுண்டுவாழ்வாரேவாழ்வார்மற்றெல்லாந்தொ ழுதுண்டுபின்செல்பவர். Those who till the ground enjoy plenty and happiness, the rest being followers and servants of the great depend on their assistance. (குறள்.) தொழுதூண்சுவையிலுழுதூணினிது. To cultivate ground and live by it is more satisfactory than to procure maintenance from others by serving them. உழுதுபுழுதியாக்க, inf. To plough and harrow, to waste. உழுபடை, s. A plough, கலப்பை; [ex படை, implements.] உழுவளைப்பு, s. The turnings in ploughing, தொழுப்பு. உழவு, v. noun. Ploughing, உழு கை. 2. (fig.) (p.) Agriculture, husbandry, tillage, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவின்மிகுத்தஊதியமில்லை. There is no occupation which yields greater profit than agriculture. உழவடைக்க, inf. To make over to another a piece of land for purposes of cultivation. உழவர்--உழவோர், s. Ploughmen, cultivators, agriculturists, husbandmen, inhabitants of agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். 3. (p.) [ex உழப்பு.] Warriors, heroes, படைவீரர். உழவிடை, s. Cessation from ploughing. உழவீரம், s. Condition of the ground when it is sufficiently moist to be ploughed. உழவுகட்ட, inf. [prov.] To take the lead--as the first of several teams in ploughing, to mark the course, &c., முதற்சால்போக. உழவுகட்டி, s. Clods in a ploughed field, உழும்பொழுதுபெயருமண்கட்டி. உழவுகாலம், s. Ploughing season. உழவுகுண்டை--உழவுமாடு--உழ வெருது. Oxen trained to the plough. உழவுகோல், s. A ploughman's rod or staff, an ox goad, தாற்றுக்கோல். 2. A horse whip, குதிரைச்சம்மட்டி. உழவுகோல்கொண்டூர்ந்தனன். He drove (the horse) with a whip. உழவுசால், s. A furrow, படைச் சால். உழவுசெய்ய, inf. To plough, practise agriculture, உழ. உழவுத்தொழில், s. Ploughing, tillage, husbandry, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவுபொறுத்தமாடு, s. A powerful, well trained ox that works easily. உழவுமழை, s. Rain that falls in the ploughing and sowing season. உழுகை, v. noun. Ploughing, agriculture. உழுநர், s. Ploughmen, உழவர். 23)

ūẕ (p. 71) s. Antiquity, oldness, பழமை. 2. Rule, established usage, customs of long standing, or immemorial in their origin, the method, or order of performing things in regular succession முறை. 3. Original or natural state, quality, disposition, குணம். 4. Hatred, enmity, malice, பகை. 5. Sunshine, வெயில். (p.) 6. The entailment of actions performed in previous births, fate destiny; in the Hindu sense, the regular arrangement of events, by providence or fate, விதி. ஊழிற்பெருவலியாவுள. What is more powerful than destiny? போக்குமூழ்பலகழித்தி. Thou shalt pass many ages. (உபதேசகா.) ஊழ்த்துணை, s. A wife, the destined aid, a help mate, மனைவி. (p.) ஊழ்முறை, s. Order resulting from previous births, விதிமுறை. (p.) ஊழ்விதி, s. Destiny as resulting from the actions of previous births. பிராரத்துவவிதி. ஊழ்வினை, s. The actions of former births considered as the latent cause of the metempsychosis. ஊழ்வினைப்பயன், s. The sufferings and enjoyments entailed upon the sentient spirit in the varied course of the metempsychosis. 4)

eḷimai (p. 75) s. Despicableness, meanness, lowness of rank, circumstances, character, &c., நீசத்துவம். 2. Pitiableness, exciting compassion, இரங்கப்படத்தக்கதன்மை. 3. Weakness, பலவீனம். 4. Easiness, facility, being easy to effect, acquire, attain, endure, to be understood; easiness of access, எளிது. 5. Solitariness, தனிமை; [ex எள்.] எளிஞர்--எளியர்--எளியார்--எளி யோர், s. The low, mean, destitute, the poor, தரித்திரர். எளிதரவு, [impr. for. எளிவரல்.] Indigence, poverty, despicableness, cringing, தரித்திரம். 2. Lowness, humility, தாழ்மை. எளிது, s. [impr. எளிசு.] Being easy of execution, acquisition, &c., இலேசு. எளிதானகாரியம், s. A trifling thing, a trivial affair, a thing easily understood. எளியகுடி, s. Poor, destitute inhabitants. 2. A family low in rank. எளியகொடை, s. Unworthy gifts, presents unsuitable to the persons to whom they are made. எளியது, s. That which is despicable, low trifling, &c., எளிமையானது. எளியவன்--எளியன், s. A man of low caste, a person poor, destitute, mean, &c. எளியவன்பெண்டாட்டியெல்லாருக்கும்மைத்துன ச்சி. The wife of a poor man is free of access to every body. எளியாரைவலியார்கேட்பின் வலியாரைத்தெய்வங் கேட்கும். If the powerful oppress the weak, the deity will require it of them. எளியவிலை, s. Low price. எளியவேலை, s. Low, menial work. கைக்கெளியது, s. That which is portable, small, easily carried, stolen, secreted, managed, as a child, &c. தாளையேதரமறிகிலாதெமக்கெளிதருசிவப்பிரகாசன். The guru (Sivaprakasa) who readily admits us to his feet; i. e., he is ready to grant our desires (சத.) 24)

ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

ōmpu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓம்பினேன், வேன், ஓ ம்ப, v. a. To protect, guard, defend, save, காக்க. 2. To preserve, keep, take care of, பாதுகாக்க. 3. To keep off, ward off, dispel, cease from, ஒழிய. 4. To cherish, nourish, maintain, support, to cause to increase, வளர்க்க. பரிந்தோம்பிக்காக்கவொழுக்கந்தெரிந்தோம்பித்தேரி னுமஃதேதுணை. Desire and maintain with great care the conduct proper to your caste, which, how much soever the virtues are examined and understood, and how much soever the senses are guarded, is alone the convoy of the soul. (குறள்.) அஞ்சலோம்பென்றார். He said, away with your fears. (குறள்.) வலியார்மேன்மாறேற்றலோம்புக. Let opposition to those more powerful than yourself cease. (குறள்.) விலக்கியவோம்பி. Avoiding whatever is prohibited by the shasters-- (நீதிநெறி.) தாங்கற்றனவோம்பாது. Not retaining in memory what they have learnt--(நீதிநெறி.) விருந்தோம்ப, inf. To entertain (guests), religious mendicants, &c.--as one of the duties of the householder. See இல்வாழ்வான். தீயோம்பி, verb. part. Cherishing the sacred fire. (நீதிநெறி.) வேள்வியோம்ப, inf. To offer burnt sacrifices. ஓம்பல், v. noun. Taking care of, &c., பாதுகாத்தல். 105)

kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Excessive sourness, அதிகபுளிப்பு. கடுவட்டி, s. Excessive interest, usury, அதிகவட்டி. கடுவழி, s. A rugged way, கடுமை யானவழி. கடுவிலை, s. An exorbitant price, அதிகவிலை. கடுவெயில், s. To pass from one mode of existence into another, பிறவிமாற. கதியற்றவன்--கதிகெட்டவன், s. An impoverished man, or disabled person. கதியுள்ளவன், s. An able, powerful, rich man. கதிவிட, inf. To ride a horse swiftly in any of the five paces. ஐங்கதி, s. The five paces which horses are taught. See துரககதி. அவரோகணகதி, s. Descent, downward tendency--opp. to ஆரோகணகதி. சுபாவகதி, s. Natural strength, or faculty. 5)

kṉ (p. 102) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To be heavy, to become heavy, massive, solid, thick, hard, injurated, பாரமா யிருக்க. 2. To be thick, close, crowded, numerous, பருக்க. 3. To be abundant, copious, to outweigh, &c., அதிகரிக்க; the infinitive used adverbially expresses very much. கனக்கக்கொடுத்தான். He gave plentifully. கனத்தஉடைமைக்கனர்த்தமில்லை. Solid property will not soon be injured. காரியங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The matter has become more serious. குற்றங்கனத்துக்கொண்டது. The crime is aggravated. குரல்கனத்துப்போயிற்று. The voice is become heavy, hoarse--as of one who has reached manhood, one who drinks liquor, &c. கனத்தஆக்கினை, s. Severe punishment. கனத்தகுடி, s. An illustrious and noble family. கனத்தசமுசாரம், s. A numerous family. கனத்ததோல், s. Thick skin--as that of a beast or of the hand, &c., hardened and thickened by labor. கனத்தநாள், s. A critical day in diseases--as the day of new or full moon, &c., when the influence of the planets is unusually powerful, aggravating disease, &c. On such days it is deemed improper to bathe, take medicine, &c. (c.). கனத்தபயிர், s. A thick crop. கனத்தபனி, s. A heavy dew. கனத்தமனிதன், s. A large heavy man. சரீரங்கனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To become heavy--as the body, by disease, humors, corpulency, &c. தலைகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To grow heavy--as the head through cold. வயிறுகனத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To have indigestion. 2. To eat a belly-full, to be well stuffed. 3. To become gravid; sometimes in this meaning, spoken in contempt, of pregnancy from illicit intercourse. கனப்பு, v. noun. [vul.] Thickness, becoming thick, கனம். 2. Weight, heaviness, solidity, gravidity, பாரம். 3. The hardness of a swelling, அழுத்தம். 4. stoutness, lustiness, grossness, கொழுப்பு. 5. Pride, self-importance, இறுமாப்பு. உன்கனப்பெடுத்துப்போடுவேன். I will reduce you. சரீரக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness of the body--as in plethora, &c. தலைக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness in the head. வயிற்றுக்கனப்பு, s. Heaviness of the system from indigestion, constipation, &c. 29)

kāvl (p. 105) s. Defence, protection, preservation, support, keeping, காப்பு. 2. Guard, restraint, அரண். (p.) 3. Surrounding wall, fortification, மதில். 4. A prison, a ward, hold, சிறைச்சாலை; [ex கா.] காவல்தானே பாவையர்க்கழகு. Chastity becomes a woman. காவலன், s. A protector, a guardian, காப்போன். 2. A king, அரசன். 3. A husband, கணவன். 4. One of a king's bodyguard, மெய்க்காப்பாளன். காவலாளர், s. Watchmen, sentinels, watchers, guards, காப்போர். காவலாளி, s. A keeper, a guard, காப் போன்.--Note. In Tinnevelly, this word is invariably used to signify a prisoner and not a watchman, which latter is called காவற்காரன். காவலிருக்க, inf. To be on guard, to keep watch, காவலாயிருக்க. 2. To wait or look, as for a person expected. காவலிலிருக்க, inf. To be in prison or captivity. காவலிலேபோட--காவலில்வைக்க, inf. To imprison. 2. To keep in the patrolhut till morning--as a person found straying during night. காவல்கட்டு, s. A strong guard. 2. Secure protection. 3. Rigid restraint. காவல்கட்டுப்பண்ண, inf. To set a strong guard. 2. To watch closely. 3. To keep young people, &c., in close restraint. 4. [prov.] To attend strictly to the diet of a sick person. காவல்காக்க, inf. To watch, guard, protect. 2. To be on guard, to act as sentries, watchmen, &c. 3. To defend the body by wearing armor, &c., or the head by oils, &c., against disease, which either has attacked the lower extremities, or indicates coma, &c. காவல்செய்ய, inf. To protect, to defend. 2. [prov.] To pass a straw-rope over a heap of corn in the field, or make with it diagrams on the ground, &c., to defend the grain from demons. 3. To place an image of Ganesa (being a handful of moist cow-dung) on the top of a heap of corn before winnowing, as a security from demons.--Note. If it is measured, it is deemed secure against their attack. காவல்பண்ண, inf. To protect, defend, take care of, watch over. 2. To nourish, cherish, provide for. 3. To imprison, to keep under guard, to confine. காவல்மாற, inf. To be relived, changed, &c.--as sentinels or a watch. காவல்மாற்ற, inf. To relieve guard, change watchmen, sentinels, &c. காவல்முறை, s. Turns in watching. காவல்மேரை, s. Share of grain given to the watchman of a village from the thrashing floor. காவல்விட, inf. To release from watching, guarding, &c. காவற்கடவுள்--காவற்பெருமான், s. Vishnu, as the preserver of the world, விஷ்ணு. காவற்கட்டு, s. [prov.] A bundle of paddy sheaves for the watchman. காவற்கட்டை, s. [prov.] A fire-brand kept burning to ward off the female demon கொற்றி from a woman in child-birth, when exposure is greater than at other times. 2. A clump of wood kept burning through the night near a patrol-hut. காவற்கப்பல், s. A reconnoitring vessel, a guard-ship. காவற்காடு, s. A jungle or forest defence, காட்டாண். 2. A reserved forest. காவற்காரர், s. Watchmen, sentinels, a patrol, காப்போர். காவற்கூடம்--காவற்சாலை--காவல்ஸ்த லம், s. A guard-room; a prison-house. காவற்புரி, s. [prov.] A straw-rope thrown over the heap of corn in the field to defend it from demons. அருங்காவல், s. A very strict or powerful guard. தலைக்காவல், s. The main guard. தூக்கிரிக்காவல், s. An overseer of a village. மெல்லுயிர்க்குங்காவல், s. A support or cordial to the languishing mind. 28)
