Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். [commonly ஏராது or ஏற்கமாட்டாது.] That will not be acceptable or proper in the sight of God. இதுதிருவுளத்திற்கேற்குமா. Will this be agreeable to the divine mind? is it just? meaning it is not. இந்தப்பிரமகத்திபாதகத்தையுமேற்றுக்கொள்வாய்... And the crime of this brahmanicide you become chargeable with. எதிரேற்றதெவ்வர். The opposing foes. வீடணன்மேற்போனவேலேற்றநன்றி. The kindness of Latchmana in receiving (into his own breast) the dart thrown at Vibeeshana. ஏற்போர், s. A skull, மண்டையோடு. 6. A mendicant's vessel for receiving alms, being commonly a shell or sherd, இரப்போர்கலம். 7. (fig.) Length, extension, நீளம். கேடுகாலத்துக்கு ஓடுகப்பறை. To give permission, to grant privileges, warrant. கட்டளைக்கல், s. A touchstone, உரைகல். 2. Weight, நிறைகல். கட்டளைக்குரு--கட்டளைச்சுவாமி, s. The principal priest for the time being--so used by the Romanists. கட்டளைசொல்ல, inf. To give or publish an order, to publish a notice. கட்டளைச்சட்டம், s. Regulations, enactments, edicts, statutes. கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. One of a religious order who acts as an overseer or burser in a temple, or charitable institution, receiving the rents and dues, making disbursements and seeing that the services are properly conducted. வாரக்கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. An overseer of a religious order who is gratuitously fed by the community, receiving food from the same family every seventh day. கட்டளைபண்ண, inf. To command, direct, order. கட்டளைபிடித்துவார, inf. [prov.] To cut ola by a rule. கட்டளைப்படிவர, inf. To come regularly. 2. To come according to order. கட்டளைமீற, inf. To break or violate an order. கட்டளையிட, inf. To order, command, direct, decree, prescribe, charge. 2. To grant, bestow. 3. To pass a law or edict, to utter a decision. நமக்கீசனிட்டகட்டளையிதுதான். The mode of using the hands in dancing which are of twenty-three kinds, viz.: 1. பதாகை, stretching all the five fingers keeping them close and straight. 2. திரிபதாகை, bending the thumb and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 3. பிறை, keeping the other four fingers close together separately from the thumb. 4. சர்ப்பசிரம், keeping the palm of the hand curved. 5. சாளையம், bending the little finger and ring-finger and stretching the rest. 6. மான்றலை, keeping the middle three fing ers down and lifting the other two up. 7. பதுமகோசரம், keeping up the palm of the hand opened having the fingers bent. 8. சிலீமுகம், keeping the tip of the forefinger at the bottom of the thumb and the tips of each of the rest at the middle of the adjoining finger. 9. முட்டி, folding all the four fingers and keeping the thumb above the middle finger. 1. சிக ரம், folding all the other fingers and keeping the thumb stretched. 11. சூசி, stretching the pointing finger and keeping the thumb curved while the others are folded. 12. கபித்தம், keeping the tips of the thumb and fore-finger close together and the other folded. 13. கடகம், keeping the tips of the thumb and forefinger together, the middle finger bent and the rest stretched. 14. சந்தங்கிஷம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, stretching the rest. 15. அஞ்சவாய், keeping the ringfinger and little finger separately stretched up and keeping the tips of the rest together. 16. முகிழ், keeping the tips of all the fingers together. 17. திரிலிங்கம், keeping the tips of the thumb and pointing finger together, the rest curved and the wrist a little bent. 18. மிருகசிரம், stretching up the pointing finger and the little finger and keeping the rest close together. 19. சிங்கநகம், keeping up the palm of the hand having the fingers almost folded. 2. கூர்மம், stretching up the middle finger while the others are bent down. 21. பூரணம், stretching all the five fingers straight not being close together. 22. மென்னிலை, bending the thumb and stretching up the rest. 23. முன்னதம், separating the fore-finger from the rest. கரவாளம், s. kāṇikkai (p. 103) s. A voluntary oblation, commonly in money, gold, fruits, &c. set before an idol to obtain favor, a sacrifice, தட்சணை. 2. A present to a guru or other great person, பாதகாணிக்கை. காணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. To present an oblation. காணிக்கைத்தட்டு, s. A salver for receiving gifts. காணிக்கைப்பொருள், s. A thing presented as an oblation or gift. காணிக்கைகொண்டுவர--காணிக் கைவைக்க, inf. To place a gift in a salver before an idol. முடிக்காணிக்கை, s. An offering of the hair of a person's head which has been allowed to grow for a certain time and then shaved off and presented to an idol in fulfillment of a vow. இராசகாணிக்கை, s. [in burlesque.] A great-bellied glutton, பெருந்தீனிக்காரன். குண்டோதரன்போலிருக்க, inf. To be full-fed, stuffed up; to have one's lap full. 33)

kevuḷi (p. 138) s. A red species of cocoanut. (See கேளி.) 2. [prop. கௌளி.] A wall lizard. கெவுளிச்செவ்விளநீர். The unripe fruit of the கெவுளி tree.--Note. The water of this nut is much esteemed for bathing an idol, and for medicinal use. கெவுளிசொல்லுகின்றது. The lizard chirps-regarded as an omen. கெவுளிபாத்திரம், s. A large reddish shell used by religious mendicants for receiving alms, eating, &c. கெவுளிசாத்திரம், s. The art or science of divining by the chirp of lizards. 36)

There is no administration of justice; no justice or satisfaction can be obtained. கேள்விமுயல். Be prompt in receiving information. கேள்விகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to listen--not elegant. கேள்விமறுமொழி, s. Question and answer; a catechism. கேள்விக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Written application to a court of justice. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)
