akngkārm (p. 1) s. Pride, self-consequence, கருவம். 2. One of the four intellectual powers, the energy which excites to action, அந்தக்கரணங்களிலொன்று. (See இந்தி ரியம்.) 3. Self-consciousness, individuality, regarding one's self as performing actions instead of the deity as operating within, நானெனுஞ்செருக்கு. 4. (p.) An operating cause of transmigration, பிறவிக்குமூலம்; ex அகம் myself, et காரம் that which acts. அகங்காரகிரந்தி--அகங்காரக்கிரந்தி, s. The bond of the three evil principles, மும்மலம், which bind the soul from eternity, and subject it to births. (p.) அகங்காரத்திரயம், s. A companion, associate, partner, escort, protector, துணைவன். 5. Desire, இச்சை. 6. Women's hair, கூந்தல். இணையினெஞ்சமே. O! mind, debased beyond comparison. (வைராக்.) இறைகழலிணைமேவியவிமலர். Holy men who unite themselves to the feet of the Supreme Being. இணைக்கயல், s. A couple of carpfish, figures of which in gold, silver, &c., form one of the eight auspicious articles placed on special occasions as good omens, also as pleasing to the gods, அட் டமங்கலத்தொன்று. 2. One of the emblems of royalty, அரசசின்னத்தொன்று. இணைக்கல்லை, s. Two leaf-plates --as set before a religious mendicant or pandarum, while feeding him. இணைக்குப்போக, inf. [prop. இணை யாகப்போக.] To walk with another, to walk abreast. இணைக்குறளாசிரியப்பா, s. A kind of ஆசிரியப்பா, some of whose middle lines are shorter than the first or last line. இணைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting either of the kind of verses called வெண்பா and அகவல், or வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, in hundred verses and composed in accordance with the rule of அந்தாதி--one of the பிரபந்தம். இணைமுரண்டொடை, s. [in poetry.] A kind of ryhme where the first two feet in a line are opposed to each other either in word or meaning, ஓர்தொடை-as சீறடிப்பேரகலல்குல். இணைமோனைத்தொடை, s. A species of rhyme in which the first letters of each of the first two feet are the same. See தொடை. இணையசை, s. A compound metrical syllable, நிரையசை. இணையடி or கழலிணை, s. The two feet. இணையடிசூட, inf. To adorn, crown one's self with the feet (of the deity or guru) regarding them as flowers.--Note. To place the feet of another on one's head, is a figurative form for expressing great reverence, devotedness, respect, &c. இணையளபெடைத்தொடை, s. A verse in which the first letter of the first two feet is protracted. இணையிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To compare one thing with another. இணையியைபுத்தொடை, s. The repetition of the same letter in the last two feet of any line. See தொடை. இணையெதுகைத்தொடை, s. [in poetry.] The rhyming of the second letters of the first two feet in each line. இணையெழுத்து, s. The art which a scientific or literary author employs in treating his subject-such as the general plan, divisions, subdivisions, mode of discussion, examples, quoting authorities, showing how the sentiments of others agree with, or differ from his own, &c. In the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், thirty-two particulars are given as proper to be kept in view by such writers, தந்திரவு த்தி. To pass or get over, to cross, pass through a river, a country, &c., to traverse, கடந்துபோக. 3. To exceed, go beyond, surpass, அளவிறக்க. 4. A stile or other contrivance in a lane or hedge which a man may pass over or through, but not cattle, இடுக்குமரமுதலியன. கடப்புக்கால், s. [prov.] Bandy legs, வளைந்தகால். கடவான், s. [prov.] A channel cut in the ridge of a rice-field to let the surplus water pass away, or for watering the next field, நீர்மடை. கடவு, s. [prov.] Way, path, வழி. கடவுமரம், s. A turn-stile--as கடவை. கடவை, s. Fault, defect, crime, குற்றம். (பிங்.) 2. A leap, jump, passing over, கடக்கை. 3. The door of a native house, garden, &c., the sill of which is to be stepped over, வாயில். 4. A ladder, ஏணி. 5. A break or opening in a fence with some obstructions or stoppage at the bottom, வேலியினிடைவெளி. 6. [prov.] a stile, &c., in a path to exclude cattle, கடப்பு. கடவைப்பட, inf. To be going away--as a troublesome or mischievous person, நீங்க. 2. To disappear as property by stealth, காணாமற்போக. 2)

camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s. Rites and duties of religion, மார்க்காசாரம். சமயகாரியம், s. Questions, matters, &c., of theology; religious concerns, subjects, &c. சமயக்கட்டு, s. Religious obligation. See கட்டு. சமயக்கொள்கை--சமயக்கோட்பாடு, s. Religious opinions, tenets, &c. சமயசாத்திரம், s. The theology of a sect. 2. Religious writings or shastras. சமயதீட்சை, s. The ceremony of initiating a disciple in the mantras, &c., peculiar to the sect. See தீட்சை. சமயத்தார், s. The followers of a religious system. சமயங்கடக்க, inf. One of another religion. சமயப்போலி, s. A spurious system of religion. (p.) சமயப்போக்கு, v. noun. The substance, scope, &c., of a religion. (Little used.) சமயமதம், s. Bigotry, enthusiasm, conceit in religion. சமயமதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be enthusiastic, to act the bigot. சமயமானம், s. A natural regard to one's own religion. (c.) 2. (Rott.) Constancy or firmness in a religion. சந்நியாசிக்குஞ் சாதிமானஞ் சமயமானம்விடாது.... The ascetic who has relinquished every thing will not relinquish his caste or sect. சமயவாதம், s. Religious controversy. சமயவாதி, s. A disputant for religion. 2. A professor of religion. சமயாசாரம், s. The rites and ceremonies, of a religion according to a prescribed institute. 2. Religious practice, observance of rites. (c.) சமயாதீதன், s. The supreme Being-as transcending all religions, சமயங்கடந்த கடவுள். (p.) சமயி, s. The fourteen acts of beneficence, தயாவிருத்தி, 14.--The first seven relate to the soul, the other seven to the body. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *

pakkam (p. 288) --பக்ஷம்--பட்சம், s. Side, புறம். (See அக்கம்.) 2. Contiguity, nearness, அருகு. 3. Place, இடம். 4. Faction, interest, party, பிரிவு. 5. Affection, friendship, kindness, attachment, நட்பு. 6. The half of a lunar month for fortnight. See அபரபக்ஷம், பூர்வபக்ஷம். 7. An argument, thesis, proposition advanced, கோட்பாடு. 8. PAKSHA.--Note. பக்கம், [in logic.] A twofold relation:--1. புறப்பக்கம், or புறுத்துப்பக்கம், an inference regarding exterior or secular matters; 2. உட்பக்கம், or அகப்பக்கம், connected with mental or religious truths. Each of these is applicable to two species of comparison; 1. நிகர்பக்கம், துல்லியபக்கம், ஒப்பாம்பக் கம், or சபக்கம், proper comparison, or deduction from analogy; thus for புறப்பக்கம், there is smoke, therefore there is fire; and for உட்பக்கம், regarding moral actions, originated in the mind; analogy refers them to maya, மாயை, as their basis. The agreement between this doctrine and the experience of a person, is ground of rational deduction. 2. நிகராப்பக்கம், ஒவ்வாதபக் கம், or விபக்கம், improper comparison, involving incongruity, absurdity, impossibility; thus for புறப்பக்கம், to say 'there is fire in water' is an absurdity in affairs of common life; for உட்பக்கம், to say that the basis of Siva's knowledge is மாயை, is an absurdity. In spiritual things the mental faculties, as well as the senses, are referred to மா யை, as their basis, and medium of acquiring knowledge. The சூக்கும body, the immediate source of consciousness, is referred to the same principle; and when the soul is liberated from births these are resolved into their original principles. பக்கத்திலேவாங்கிக்கொள்ளுதல். Borrowing in the neighborhood, or of others besides the persons in question. அவர்பக்கத்துக்காரியகாரன். He is his agent. எனக்குப்பக்கத்திலேஇரு. Sit be me. பக்கக்கிரகணம், s. [in combin.] To intend, to design, as ஓடப்பார்க்கிறான், he seeks to escape; also to try, to attempt, as செய்யப்பார்க்கிறான், he endeavors to do it; and to purpose as போகப்பார்க்கிறான், he purposes to go; or to expect, as வரப்பார்த்துக்கொள்கிறான், he expects to come. To expose a friend to reproach. புறத்திணை, s. [as புறப்பொருள்.] Public or state affairs, reference to foreign powers as distinguished from அகத்திணை, domestic or love affairs. It is divided into eight branches: 1. பகைநிரைகவர்தல். 2. பகைவர்கவர்ந்ததன்னிரைமீட்டல். 3. பகைமேற் செல்லல். 4. வரும்பகைமுன்னெதிரூன்றல். 5. தன்னரண்காத்தல். 6. பொருதல். 7. போர்வெ ல்லல், which see. Diet, or regimen, observed after a course of medicine, as மறுபத்தியம்--oppos. to அகப்பத்தியம். புறப்பற்று, s. External attachments, or connexions--oppos. to அகப்பற்று. புறப்பொருள், s. External or state affairs, especially such as relate to war, being a division of the subjects embraced in பொருள். See புறத்திணை. புறமடை, s. An out-side channel for water. 2. Outer oblations, as flesh and spirits, presented to ferocious deities out-side the temple. See உண்மடை. புறமட்டை, s. Out-side or back-side of a cocoa or palmyra branch. புறமயிர், s. The hairs of the body, not of the head. புறமறிவு, s. Regard for the welfare of others, benevolence, sympathy, பிறர்க்கு நன்மைநினைக்கை. புறம்பணை--புறவணி, s. A forest-tract of country, முல்லைநிலம். 2.
