ayā (p. 22) s. Distress, affliction, languor, fatigue, வருத்தம். (p.) அயாவுயிர்க்க, inf. To recover or be relieved from fainting, distress, &c., வருத்தம்நீங்க. See உயிர், v. 15)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

āyācam (p. 39) s. Fatigue, weariness, faintness, lassitude, languor, weariness of mind, இளைப்பு. Wils. p. 118. AYASA. 2. Dissatisfaction, displeasure, மனவருத்தம். 3. Regret, துக்கம். (c.) நான்சொன்னதுமக்காயாசமாயிருக்கிறதா? Do you feel displeased at what I said? ஆயாசந்தீர, inf. To be relieved after fatigue, to be refreshed. 31)

āṟu (p. 43) s. A river, natural current, brook, channel or passage through shallows, a canal, நதி. (c.) 2. (p.) Way, road, path, mode, manner, rule, method, order, custom, circumstance, வழி. In this sense, in verse, the று, is sometimes omitted. 3. Morality, virtue, good conduct, way in a moral sense, the good or right way, ஒழுக்கம. சுரருலகெய்துமாறளித்தான. He endowed him with the bliss of the gods, or literally, granted that he should attain to the world of the gods. யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதி Go and tell that I am come--ஆ for ஆறு. என்றவாறு. A form added to explanations of grammatical rules, &c., implying such is the meaning. ஆறலைக்க, inf. To rob in the highway, infest the road, வழிப்பறிக்க. (p.) ஆறலை--ஆறலைப்பு, v. noun. Highway-robbery, street-robbery, வழிப்பறி க்கை. ஆறலைக்கள்வருமளியராயினார். Even the highway-robbers have proved friends. (நடை.) ஆறாடி, s. A lascivious, idle fellow, a vagabond, a pest. 2. One not to be relied on, a changeling, man without character. ஆறுகட்ட, inf. To construct a dam across a river, construct the banks of a river. ஆறுகாட்டி, s. A guide, pilot, வழிகாட்டி. ஆறை--ஆற்றூர், s. The name of a town in the Carnatic. (p.) ஆறைநகர்காவலன், s. The king of that town. ஆற்றங்கரை, s. The bank of a river, shore of a river. ஆற்றிடைக்குறை, s. Blank, or dried spots in a river, an inlet, ait, அரங் கம்; [ex இடை, intermediate, et குறை, wanting.] ஆற்றிடைப்பட, inf. To be in the way, வழியிலிருக்க. 2. To meet in the way, வழியெதிர்ப்பட. (p.) ஆற்றுக்காலாட்டியர், s. Agricultural women of low caste, உழத்தியர். (p.) ஆற்றுக்கால், s. A dike, channel for conveying water to the fields, ஆற்று வாய்க்கால். ஆற்றுச்சுழி, s. A whirlpool, vortex, ஆற்றுநீர்ச்சுழி. ஆற்றுச்செருப்படி, s. A small water-plant, ஓர்பூடு. ஆற்றுணா, s. Rice tied up for a journey, கட்டுச்சோறு. (p.) ஆற்றுத்தும்மட்டி, s. Colocynth, பேய்க்கொம்மட்டி, Citrullus colocynthis, L. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், s. The natural construction of a sentence. See பொருள்கோள். ஆற்றுநெட்டி, s. The நீர்ச்சுண்டி, a water-plant, Aeschynomene paludosa. ஆற்றுப்பச்சை, s. A curious, greenstone--one of the one-hundred-andtwenty kinds of minerals--as நாகப்பச்சை. ஆற்றுப்படுத்த, inf. To lead, direct or conduct a person into the right way, வழிப்படுத்த. 2. To give advice, to conduct into the path of virtue, நன் மார்க்கத்திலுட்படுத்த. (p.) ஆற்றுப்படை, v. noun. The act of conducting, directing, &c., either physically or morally. 2. A poem, the object of which is to conduct one to a superior. விறலியாற்றுப்படை, s. A songstress directing another to a benevolent man. பாணராற்றுப்படை, s. A singer directing another to a patron. கூத்தராற்றுப்படை, s. An actor on the stage directing another to a generous man. பொருநராற்றுப்படை, s. A buffoon directing another to a prince. ஆற்றுப்பாசி, s. A water-plant, ஓர்பூடு, Caulinia indica, L. ஆற்றுப்பித்தல்--ஆற்றோரம், s. Side or bank of a river. ஆற்றுப்பூவரசு, s. A tree, ஓர்மரம், Trewia nudiflora, L. ஆற்றுப்பெருக்கு, s. A swelling of a river. ஆற்றுமடை, s. The channel or bed of a river, ஆற்றுக்காலின்மடை. ஆற்றுமரி, s. A shrub, நீருமரி. ஆற்றுமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmin, ஓர்மல்லிகை, Jasminum sambac. ஆற்றுமுகத்துவாரம், s. The mouth of a river. ஆற்றுமுள்ளி, s. A thorny plant growing by the river, ஓர்பூடு, Dilivaria ilicifolia. ஆற்றுமேலழகி, s. A plant, ஓர்பூடு, Celsia coromandeliana, L. ஆற்றுவாளை, s. A river-fish. See வாளை. ஆற்றெதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet on the road. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, v. noun. The flowing of a river, stream, current, ஆற்றுநீரோ ட்டம். 2. Rules following each other in regular and natural order, (lit.) the flowing of a river--one of the four aspects of a grammatical rule. See சூத்திர நிலை. தீயாறுடையான், s. An immoral man. நல்லாறுடையான், s. A moral person, one whose conduct is agreeable to rule. சிற்றாறு, s. A rivulet, a brook. 66)

āṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆறினேன், வேன், ஆற, v. n. To abate, relax, cool, grow cold, be refreshed, குளிர. 2. To be appeased, alleviated, mollified, தணிய. 3. To heal as a wound, hurt, &c., சொஸ்தமாக. 4. To rest, repose, இளைப்பாற. (c.) ஆறுவதுசினம். Anger should be appeased. புண்ணாறிற்று. The wound is healed. ஆறாப்பசி, s. An insatiable hunger. ஆறாப்புண், s. An incurable sore, ulcer, &c. மனதாற, inf. To be appeased when angry, be consoled. ஆறுதல், v. noun. Abating, being alleviated, consoled, mitigated, refreshed. ஆற்றிபண்ண, inf. To relieve, aid one by carrying his load, &c., give one rest, respite. 67) *

āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. Sweeter than nectar. (குறள்.) கணவராற்றமுனிந்தே. The husbands greatly resenting. ஆற்றாக்கேடு, s. Extreme poverty, indigence exigence, great necessity. ஆற்றாச்சண்டி, s. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To cool and give. 2. To help or relieve one at work. ஆற்றித்தேற்ற, inf. To soothe and console. ஆற்றிப்போற்றிக்கொள்ள, inf. To treat guests with civility, விருந்தினரை யுபசரிக்க. 2. ir (p. 48) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To beg alms, solicit aid, seek support by begging--as religious mendicants, பிச்சைகேட்க. 2. To pray, beseech, entreat, solicit, வேண்டிக்கொள்ள. இரந்தும்பரந்தவர்க்கீந்தவர். Those who give to beggars although they themselves have to ask alms. இரந்துணி--இரந்துண்ணி, s. A beggar, இரப்போன். To unburden the mind, relieve one's self or another of a heavy care, கவலையொழிக்க. 4. To reduce, bring down, கீழ்ப்படுத்த. அவனுடையகொழுப்பிறக்கிப்போடுவேன். To relax, slacken, relax a spring, &c., to loosen a rope, &c., to soften, mollify, cause another to yield, to work on one's feelings, to cause to relent, move the heart, appease, conciliate; to soften or moisten the throat, chest, &c.--as with liquids, fruits, conserves, இளகச்செய்ய. கையையிளக்கிவிட்டான். iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. The betel creeper recently planted, வெற்றிலையிளங்கொடி. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. இளங்குரல், s. A low, suppressed cry--as at the commencement of a funeral wail, அமர்ந்தகுரல். 2. Elements, rudiments. இளம்பசி, s. Slight hunger--as between meals, easily relieved by light food, or fruit. இளம்பச்சை, s. Light green. இளம்பதம், s. Imperfectness, immaturity, moderateness in state or quality, இளமை. 2. A peculiar quality in medicinal oils derived from immature heat in some cases a defect, in others an excellence, இளம்பாகம். 3. A thin consistency obtained by melting, the first stage of melting, உருகுபதம். 4. The state of sweetmeats, pastries, or other kinds of food imperfectly cooked, வேகாப்பதம். 5. The state of oils or electuaries insufficiently prepared, இலேகியமுதலியவற்றின் பதக்குறைவு. 6. The quality of paddy, &c., imperfectly or moderately dried after boiling, நெல்முதலியவற்றின்காய்ச்சற்கு றைவு. 7. The state of being slightly parched, toasted, &c., வறுபடாப்பொரி. இளம்பயிர், s. Young shoots of corn, corn in a fit state to be transplanted. இளம்பருவம்--இளம்பிராயம், s. Juvenility, youth, early stage of existence. இளம்பறியல், s. That which is plucked when immature--said of cocoanuts. இளம்பாடு, s. Sufferings of nonage, இளமையிற்படும்பாடு. 2. Immaturity, unripeness, imperfection, இளம்பதம். இளம்பிடி, s. A young female elephant, சிறியபெண்யானை. 2. A woman, a lady, பெண்; [ex பிடி, a female elephant whose stately movements a lady is poetically described to resemble in her gait.] இளம்பிள்ளை, s. Aid by sacrificing life for another. உயிரெடுக்க, inf. To take away life. உயிரெழுத்து, s. A vowel, ஆவி. உயிரொடுங்க, inf. To be reduced as the powers before death, உயிரடங்க. 2. To die, சாவ. உயிரொளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To feign great weakness, sickness, inability, &c., in order to gain or effect an object, உயிர்மறைக்க. உயிரொளித்தகள்ளன், s. A cringing deceiver who though rich and strong makes pretensions to the contrary. உயிரோம்ப, inf. To support life, maintain, உயிர்காக்க. உயிர்கலக்க, inf. uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. ēṉ (p. 79) . Why? what? wherefore? a change of என். 2. An affix of entreaty, இரக்கப்பொருளைத்தருமிடைச்சொல். 3. The common termination of the first person sing. in verbs and appellatives, தன்மையொருமைவி குதி.--Note. ஏன் is the common form of answering to a call. It is also in some places used as a sign affixed to the name of the contracting party in the introduction of bonds. ஏனென்பாரில்லை. No one cares (for him); i. e. to afford him relief. 2. There is no one to defend him. ஏனென்றால். For, because, if it be asked why. ஏனையா. What, sir? ஏனோதானோவென்றிருக்க. To be careless. ஏன்வந்தாய். Why did you come? வாருமேன். [vul.] Do come, I pray you-probably a corruption of வாருமே. அதையேன் இதையேனென்கிறான். He will have nothing to do with the matter. 2. He rejects both. 3. He has a dislike to every thing worldly, being disposed to become an ascetic. கூப்பிட்டாலேனென்றுசொல்லு. If you are called, answer-lit. say ஏன். நான்வருவானேன். Why should I come? அவர்கள்போவானேன். Why should they go? In the last two examples, the verb is in the gerundial form--a finite verb being understood. 98)
