uyr (p. 63) --உயரு, கிறேன், உயர்ந்தேன், வேன், உயர, v. n. To rise, become high, tall, elevated, to grow, or rise high, வளர. 2. To rise as water; to ascend as a paper kite; to rise towards the meridian as a heavenly body, மேலெழ. 3. To become proud, vain, self-conceited, consequential, to be elated, இறுமாக்க. 4. To be excellent, exalted, eminent, dignified, மேன்மையுற. In neuter forms it is found chiefly in the past tense. 5. To be raised or lifted up, உன்ன தப்பட. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமோ? Though it soars high, will the sparrow become a hawk? ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்மூவருக்கும். The study of the vedas belongs to the three superior castes. வரம்புயரநீருயருநீருயரநெல்லுயருநெல்லுயரக்குடி யுயருங்குடியுயரமுடியுயரும். As the banks are raised, the water will rise, as the water increases, so will the rice, rice will increase population, and as the population increases, so will the dignity of the crown. உயரநினைப்பவன்தாழ்வான். He who is intent to rise will fall. தானியமுயந்துவிற்கிறது. Grain sells cheap. மாற்றுயர்ந்தபொன். Gold of a superior quality, high standard. உயரஇருந்துவிழ, inf. To fall down from above. உயரக்கட்ட, inf. A man of high station. உயர்ந்தவயசு, s. A great age, advanced age. உயர்ந்தோர், s. The great, the learned, the renowned, the exalted in piety, virtue, austerities, &c., sages, ascetics, சான்றோர். 2. High caste persons, உயர்குலத்தோர். 3. The celestials, வானோர். 4. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். உயர்மலை, s. A high mountain. உயர்ச்சி, s. [impr. உயர்த்தி.] Height, elevation, loftiness, altitude, eminence, sublimity, உயர்வு. 2. Excellency, superiority, dignity, moral worth, exaltation, மேன்மை. உயர்த்திதாழ்த்திபார்த்தல். Regarding the hours of one's caste, rank, property, &c., fastidiously. உயர்ச்சிகாட்ட, inf. To show one's superiority. 2. To exhibit one's real dignity. உயர்பு--உயர்வு, s. Height, loftiness, elevation, உயர்ச்சி. 2. Dignity, greatness, excellence, மேன்மை. 3. Increase, விர்த்தி. உயர்விக்க, inf. The meanings of this word are commonly determined by the noun prefixed to it, and it may generally be construed by the form to cause to be, &c. See எலும்புறுத்த, below. புரவிபண்ணுறுத்திடுவார். They equipped the horse. (நைட.) மருங்கினிற்கச்சியாப்புறுத்தான். He bound the girdle about his waist. (சேதுப்.) காலிலேகல்லுறுத்துகின்றது. The pebbles hurt my feet. உறுத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak so as to make an impression on the mind. 2. To speak with energy, earnestness, &c. எலும்புறுத்த, inf. To cause a smarting irritation--as the bones by being protruded. துன்புறுத்த, inf. To cause suffering. For many words compounded with this verb, such as கண்ணுறுத்த, பயமுறுத்த, மனமுறு த்த, வற்புறுத்த, &c., see in their respective places. 2)

To burn--as the body from exposure to the sun --the mouth, or a sore from any thing pungent--the back after flogging, &c., எரிய. 3. To affect acutely, cut to the quick--as a blow, rebuke, a sarcasm, &c.; to impress, தாக்க. 4. To become firm, fast, steadfast, decided--as the mind, அழுந்த. உறைக்கமழைபெய்தது. What I said made an impression on his mind. புளியுறைக்கிறது. It is very sour. கறியுறைக்கிறது. The curry is hot. வெயிலுறைக்கிறது. The sun scorches intensely. சாறுறைக்கிறது. The broth is pungent. உறைக்கஅடிக்க, inf. To strike so as to produce feeling. உறைக்கச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak effectively. உறைக்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To look intently. உறைத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. (ஸ்காந்.) எறிகடல்--எறிதிரைக்கடல், s. The wave-throwing sea, the billowing ocean. எறிகாலி, s. A kicking cow, உதை காற்பசு. எறிகால், s. A violent wind, பெருங் காற்று. (p.) எறிசக்கரம், s. The discus weapon, எறியுஞ்சக்கரம். எறிந்துபோட, inf. To cast, throw. 2. To reject a person, thing, advice, &c., to treat with disrespect. எறிந்துபோட்டாற்போலேபேசினான். He spoke contemptuously. எறிந்துவிட, inf. To cast off, reject. 2. To sow seed. எறிபடை--எறியாயுதம், s. A missile weapon. எறிமணி, s. A large circular metal plate for striking the hours, also used as a cymbal in a temple in daily worship, &c., சேமக்கலம். எறிமுத்து, s. Chicken pox, haub in pox, மாரிமுத்து. எறியீட்டி--எறிவல்லையம், s. A dart or lance--as a missile weapon, சவளம். எறிவலையம்--எறிவளையம், s. The discus weapon, சக்கராயுதம். வித்தெறிய, inf. To sow seed. எறி, v. noun. Throwing, a cast, எறிகை. 2. [prov.] A sarcasm, irony, a hint, allusion, insinuation, innuendo, குறிப்பாகச்சொல்லுகை. ஓரெறியெறிந்துவிட்டான். He threw out a hint, an insinuation. அதற்கோரெறியெறிந்துவைக்கவேண்டும். You must give a hint, throw in a word, &c., bearing on the object, take the first step toward it. எறிவு, v. noun. Throwing, casting. எறி, க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To shine brilliantly--as the sun; to emit rays; to glitter as jewels, ஒளிசெய்ய. இழைசுடரெறிந்தலானும். By the brightness of the jewels that blazed around. (நைட.) கதிரெறிக்குநன்மணி. Glittering precious gems. (நைட.) நல்லவெயிலெறிக்கிறது. The sun is burning. மேகம்மின்னெறிப்ப. While the clouds emit lightning-எறிப்பு, v. noun. Shining, brightness, glitter, splendor, பிரகாசம். 2. Sunshine, a hot sun, வெளிலெறிக்கை. 28)

ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

o (p. 81) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To resemble, to equal, to be like, to match, நிகர்க்க. 2. v. n. To be fit, be suitable, to consist with, be adapted to, தகுதி யாயிருக்க. 3. To be equal, be parallel, alike, to match, to tally, correspond, சமமாயிருக்க. 4. To agree, consent to, allow, yield in argument, பொருந்த. ஒக்கும். It will agree, be proper, suitable, fit, like the same. ஒக்கும்வகையினால். By mutual agreement. (El. 291.) (p.) ஒத்தகுடிப்பிறந்தோர். Those born in families of equal rank that may inter-marry. எத்தால்வாழலாம்--ஒத்தால் வாழலாம். [vul.] How may we prosper? we may prosper by promoting concord. அதனோடொக்கும்--அதற்கொக்கும்--அதையொக் கும். It equals or is like that. விதியெனினும் விகாரமெனினுஞ்செயற்கையெனினு மொக்கும். In grammar, விதி, விகாரம் and செ யற்கை are synonymes. வில்லொக்கும்புருவம். Eye-brows resembling a bow. மக்களேபோல்வர்கயவரவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்கண் டதில். The base among men are formed like others. We see no other two classes of beings that do so resemble each other. ஒக்க, inf. [used adverbially.] Together with, in company with, கூட. 2. Plentifully, bountifully, numerously. ஒக்கக்கிடக்கிறது. There is abundance. ஒக்கப்படித்தவர். One who has learned much--commonly in sarcasm. ஒக்கப்பிறந்தவர்கள். Children of the same mother. ஒக்கவில்லை. There is not much. ஊரொக்கக்கொள்ளைகொண்டுண்டவன்சுற்றம் போல் வேரொக்கக்கெடுமூலவியாதியே. The hemorrhoids will be as thoroughly extirpated (by this specific) as the posterity of one who plundered the whole village. ஒக்கப்போக, inf. To join in company with. ஒத்த, rel. part. Conformable, suitable, consistent, equal. அப்படிக்கொத்தது. Such. பிறரைவருத்துவதற்கொத்தபாவமில்லை. There is no sin equal to that of afflicting others. ஒத்தசனம்--ஒத்தசாதி, s. Tribes, confederate castes linked together, securing general resentment of an injury done to any member of the respective communities. ஒத்ததரை, s. Level ground. *ஐராணி, s. The wife of Indra, இந்திராணி. 2. Parvati, பார்ப்பதி. See அயிரா ணி. 4) *

kṭukkeṉl (p. 87) v. noun. [prov.] Being grown up, increased in stature, வள ருதல். 2. Being tall, உயருதல். 3. Being increased in wealth or learning (sarcastically), மிகுதல். அவன்கடுக்கென்னநாட்செல்லும். It will be sometime before he is grown up. அதற்குள்அவன்கடுக்கென்றுவிடுவான். By that time he will be grown up. கடுக்கென்றபயிர், s. Corn grown up. கடுக்கென்றவன், s. A grown person, a young fellow. 2. A tall man. 81)

kttu (p. 92) கிறேன், கத்தினேன், வேன், கத்த, v. n. To cry with a harsh continued noise, to scream, squall--as an infant, கூவ. 2. To croak--as a frog; to caw--as a crow; to chuck--as a partridge; to scream, screach or make a harsh sound--as some birds, &c.; to chatter--as monkeys in fear, to yelp--as young dogs; to growl--as a bear; to bray--as an ass; to chuck--as young birds; to bleat--as calves; to make a reiterative sound--as some snakes, விலங் குபறவைமுதலியகத்த. 3. To chatter, to babble, to jabber, to talk in vain, பிதற்ற. 4. To roar, முழங்க. கத்திக்கத்தித்தொண்டையடைத்துப்போயிற்று. I am grown hoarse by talking so much. நாய்க்குப்பயந்துகுரங்குகத்துகிறது. The monkey chatters for fear of the dog. காக்கைகத்துகின்றது. The crow caws. அவன்கழுதைபோலேகத்துகிறான். He brays like an ass. அணில்கத்துகிறபடியால்சமீபத்திலேபாம்பிருக்கவே ண்டும். The screaching of the squirrels indicates the proximity of a snake. மாரித்தவளைபோலேயேன்கத்துகிறாய். Why do you croak like a frog in the rainy season? --said of one who talks too much, or importunes unceasingly. கத்து, v. noun. Crying, bawling, கூப்பிடுகை. 2. Chattering, unmeaning or idle talk, vain babbling, nonsense, mere declamation, பிதற்றுகை.--Note. Exalted devotees use this term concerning the opinions, &c., of other sects or of those of the same sects, but inferior to themselves. சமயக்கத்து, s. The arguments or wrangling of religious disputants. 2. Religious tenets exclusive of the sublimer or experimental parts. In both meanings the usage is sarcastic, spoken by opponents or by those who have arrived at an exalted degree. பொய்ந்நூலாம்அச்சமயக்கத்தினாராதரிக்கத்தெய்வ ங்கள்வைச்சமயக்கத்தினார்வாழ்வு. (Tiruvancadum) is the residence of Vishnu who appointed various gods to please wrangling fanatics. (திருவேங்.) வீண்கத்து, s. Vain, insignificant words, prating. 22) *
