uṟuttu (p. 68) கிறேன், உறுத்தினேன், வே ன், உறுத்த, v. a. To cause to be, to originate, உண்டாக்க. 2. To form, constitute, ஏற்படுத்த. 3. To insert, introduce, சேர்க்க. 4. To render, produce, வருவிக்க. 5. To erect, construct, நாட்ட. 6. To bring in contact, clap together, make an impression on the mind, தாக்க. 7. To cause smarting irritation, &c. --as dust in the eye, a rough or uneven surface to one sitting, or lying down from the protrusion of his bones, வருத்த. 8. To produce mental pain--as by a sarcastic remark, &c., மனதிலுறுத்த.--Note. The meanings of this word are commonly determined by the noun prefixed to it, and it may generally be construed by the form to cause to be, &c. See எலும்புறுத்த, below. புரவிபண்ணுறுத்திடுவார். They equipped the horse. (நைட.) மருங்கினிற்கச்சியாப்புறுத்தான். He bound the girdle about his waist. (சேதுப்.) காலிலேகல்லுறுத்துகின்றது. The pebbles hurt my feet. உறுத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak so as to make an impression on the mind. 2. To speak with energy, earnestness, &c. எலும்புறுத்த, inf. To cause a smarting irritation--as the bones by being protruded. துன்புறுத்த, inf. To cause suffering. For many words compounded with this verb, such as கண்ணுறுத்த, பயமுறுத்த, மனமுறு த்த, வற்புறுத்த, &c., see in their respective places. 2)

ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

kṭukkeṉl (p. 87) v. noun. [prov.] Being grown up, increased in stature, வள ருதல். 2. Being tall, உயருதல். 3. Being increased in wealth or learning (sarcastically), மிகுதல். அவன்கடுக்கென்னநாட்செல்லும். It will be sometime before he is grown up. அதற்குள்அவன்கடுக்கென்றுவிடுவான். By that time he will be grown up. கடுக்கென்றபயிர், s. Corn grown up. கடுக்கென்றவன், s. A grown person, a young fellow. 2. A tall man. 81)

kttu (p. 92) கிறேன், கத்தினேன், வேன், கத்த, v. n. To cry with a harsh continued noise, to scream, squall--as an infant, கூவ. 2. To croak--as a frog; to caw--as a crow; to chuck--as a partridge; to scream, screach or make a harsh sound--as some birds, &c.; to chatter--as monkeys in fear, to yelp--as young dogs; to growl--as a bear; to bray--as an ass; to chuck--as young birds; to bleat--as calves; to make a reiterative sound--as some snakes, விலங் குபறவைமுதலியகத்த. 3. To chatter, to babble, to jabber, to talk in vain, பிதற்ற. 4. To roar, முழங்க. கத்திக்கத்தித்தொண்டையடைத்துப்போயிற்று. I am grown hoarse by talking so much. நாய்க்குப்பயந்துகுரங்குகத்துகிறது. The monkey chatters for fear of the dog. காக்கைகத்துகின்றது. The crow caws. அவன்கழுதைபோலேகத்துகிறான். He brays like an ass. அணில்கத்துகிறபடியால்சமீபத்திலேபாம்பிருக்கவே ண்டும். The screaching of the squirrels indicates the proximity of a snake. மாரித்தவளைபோலேயேன்கத்துகிறாய். Why do you croak like a frog in the rainy season? --said of one who talks too much, or importunes unceasingly. கத்து, v. noun. Crying, bawling, கூப்பிடுகை. 2. Chattering, unmeaning or idle talk, vain babbling, nonsense, mere declamation, பிதற்றுகை.--Note. Exalted devotees use this term concerning the opinions, &c., of other sects or of those of the same sects, but inferior to themselves. சமயக்கத்து, s. The arguments or wrangling of religious disputants. 2. Religious tenets exclusive of the sublimer or experimental parts. In both meanings the usage is sarcastic, spoken by opponents or by those who have arrived at an exalted degree. பொய்ந்நூலாம்அச்சமயக்கத்தினாராதரிக்கத்தெய்வ ங்கள்வைச்சமயக்கத்தினார்வாழ்வு. He has indirectly made a sarcastic allusion to me. அவன்கையைக்கொண்டே யவன் கண்ணிற் குத்தி னான், He has taken hold of his neighbor's hand, and thrust it into his eyes; i. e. he has employed his neighbor's means to injure him. குத்தித்தைக்க, inf. To sew through and through. குத்துக்கோல், s. A horse or ox goad. தாற்றுக்கோல். 2. A pike-staff, முட்கோல். குத்துமுள், s. A spur, குதிரைமுள். குத்துவாள். s. Censuring or charging one with a fault; violent contention; lit. piercing, retortion. அந்தவேலைமேற்குத்துப்பாடுசொல்லுகிறான். He finds fault with the work. குத்துக்காயம், s. To stand on points, each urging his own reasons; to contend, to oppose-as rivals. 2. To haggle in dealing. குத்துகால்-குத்துக்கால், s. The uprights of a frame-as of a car; a piece of furniture, support, தாங்குகால். குத்துக்காலிட, inf. To sit or lie with bent legs; [ex குந்து.] குத்துக்கால்நாட்ட, inf. The hoof of oxen, horse, &c., falling perpendicularly, not spreading-regarded as a good species for speed. குத்துப்பாறை, s. Small, perpendicular heaps of stones in the vicinity of a rock. 2. [local.] The horizontal part of a rock where women pound paddy. குத்துப்போர், s. The first layer of sheaves of corn in a stack, placed with the ears uppermost, நிறுத்திட்டமாய் வைக்குஞ் சூடு. 2. Boxing, fisticuffs, மற்போர். குத்துப்புள், s. [prov.] The place where the புள் stick falls perpendicularly in the கிட்டிபுள்ளு game. குத்தெனவீழ, inf. [prov.] To fall headlong, தலைகீழாய்விழ. 2. Pungency, காரம். 5. Sharpness of edge--as கூர்மை. 6. (fig.) The quality of being pointed; cutting or sarcastic discourse; keenness, குற்றுதலானபேச்சு. கூராக, inf. kol (p. 146) --கொல்லு, கிறேன், கொன்றேன், வேன், கொல்ல, v. a. To take life, kill, slay, murder, கொலைசெய்ய. 2. To deprive mercury of its metallic properties by oxidation; to kill mercury, &c., இரசமுதலிய வற்றைக்கொல்ல. (c.) 3. (fig.) A spotted kind of wall-lizard, whose excrement is used in witcheraft. 2. The chirp of a lizard from a direction which prognosticates evil, and causes one leaving home to turn back. 3. A woman whose words are malignant. நச்சுப்பல்லிபோலேதடுக்கிறான். He stops one like an ominous lizard. நச்சுப்பார்வை, s. Bewitching, amorous, libidinous looks, ogling, மோகப்பார்வை. (p.) 2. A blighting, ominous look, கண் ணேறு. 3. An angry, maliciouse appearance, கோபப்பார்வை. நச்சுப்பால், s. The poisonous milky juice of the spurge-class of shrubs. கள்ளிப்பால். 2. First thick milk of a woman or beast, சீம்பால். 3. Milk that does not agree with the young, இணங்கா தபால். நச்சுப்புகை, s. Though the tree be poisonous will the planter cut it up; i. e. though a man be evil, his patron is not the one to reject him. நச்சுமருந்து, s. Poisonous medicine. நச்சுமழை, s. An unhealthy or pernicious rain being untimely, not plentiful, &c., காலந்தப்பியமழை. நச்சுவாக்கு, s. Malign words of some particular poets. நச்சுவாய், s. The mouth of one whose words are blighting, விஷவாக்கு. நச்சுவிறகு, s. Poisonous fuel, used in witchcraft, &c. நச்செண்ணெய், s. A kind of poisonous oil, for curing sores, விஷதைலம். நச்செலி, s. A kind of rat whose bite is poisonous, sometimes fatal. (c.) நச்செழுத்து, s. Letters which may be so placed, in poetic composition, as to be considered ominous; as in the first word of the poem, or other important places, they are, ய, ர, ள, யா, யோ, ரா, லா, லோ, also உயிரளபெடை, ஒற்றளபெடை, மகரக்கு றுக்கம், and ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். 25)
