añcu (p. 7) கிறேன், அஞ்சினேன், வேன், அஞ்ச, v. a. [used with the dative, sometimes with the accusative.] To fear, dread, பயப்பட, as அவனுக்கஞ்சுகிறேன், I fear him; அவனையஞ்சினான். He feared him. அஞ்சல், v. noun. Fearing, dreading, பயப்படல், Also the optative, வியங் கோண்முற்று. 2. Defeat, தோல்வி. அஞ்சாப்பட்டயம், s. [prov.] A certificate from the king, formerly inscribed on metal, clearing a man from the charge of guilt and re-establishing his rights as a citizen; a writ of authority, a security against oppression or ill-treatment. 3. A passport or writ of protection in passing through a country, தத்துவபரிபாலனபத்திரம். அஞ்சாமை, neg. v. noun. Fearlessness, கலங்காமை. 44)

aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To reiterate. அடுத்ததண்டனை, s. Deserved punishment. அடுத்ததின்றன்மையான்மாவாகும். The associations of the soul determine its character. (In வீராகமம்.) அடுத்தவீடு, s. The next house. அடுத்தார், s. uṭai (p. 59) s. Wealth, செல்வம். 2. Owning, belonging to, being owned, possessed, உடைமை. This word is conjugated as a symbolic verb, in the various inflections of which, or in the abstract form உடைமை, it chiefly obtains; when used as a qualifying prefix in its simple form, except as a participle, it requires the reduplication of the hard letters. பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன், s. The patron of a poem to whom it is addressed. 2. The hero of a poem. உடைப்பெருஞ்செல்வர், s. Those possessed of great wealth. உடைத்து. Third person sing. neut. of a symbolic verb often used appellatively with ஆகுதல். It has, possesses, belongs to, is subject to. இது அவற்குடைத்து. This belongs to him. மகிமையுடைத்தானமோட்சம். Glorious bliss. அச்சாணியன்னாருடைத்து. (The world) possessing persons as important (to society) as the linch pin is to a chariot. (குறள்.) யாக்கைஅழிவுடைத்தாயிருக்கின்றது. The body is perishable. உடைத்தானவன், s. A proprietor, possessor, one subject to.--Note. This form, though a solecism, is allowed. உடைய. The participle of the verb, (1) used as a form of the sixth or possessive case, ஆறாம்வேற்றுமைச்சொல்லுரு பு--as என்னுடையபொருள், my property. 2. Affixed to nouns it governs the accusative case expressed or understood--as மரத்தையுடையவன், the owner of the tree. Sometimes it is annexed to the dative --as பொருளுக்குடையவன், an heir. என்னுடையது. It is mine. மணமுடையபூ, s. A fragrant flower. மரத்தினுடையகொம்பு, s. The branch of a tree. உடையவன்--உடையான், (third pers. masc. sing.) He has, he possesses, (often used appellatively). 2. appel. n. He who has, he who possesses. (a) the owner, the possessor, (b) the Supreme Being, (c) a rich man, (d) a king, a lord, (e) the master of the house. உடையார், s. The rich, the wealthy, the opulent. 2. [prov.] A district officer. 3. A title among some tribes of Hindus. உடையார்முன்னில்லார்போல். Like the poor in the presence of the wealthy. ஆஸ்திக்குடையவன், s. An heir. மண்ணுடையான், s. A potter, குயவன். ஆஸ்தியுடையவன், s. A proprietor. ஊருடையார், s. A district officer, a registrar of land, &c. வீட்டுடையான், s. The master of a house, the husband. 99)

uttamam (p. 60) s. Perfection, virtue, excellence, goodness, நன்மை. 2. The chief, principal, or best of the kind--whether persons or things; eminence, superiority, nobleness, uprightness, sincerity, மேன்மை. Wils. p. 141. UTTAMA. உத்தமஞானம், s. The knowledge of good and the soul. உத்தமதானம், s. Reward of merit, gifts of the highest kind--as gifts obtained in the paths and virtue and bestowed on the meritorious, நல்லோர்க்கீ கை. See தானம். உத்தபட்சம், s. First rate, kind, class, &c., முதற்பட்சம். உத்தமபரி, s. The கொத்துமல்லி plant, Coriandrum sativum, L. 2. A horse of superior quality--being onehundred inches high and one-hundredand-twenty-four long, சிரேஷ்டகுதிரை. உத்தமபலம், s. The முந்திரிகை fruit, Anacardium occidentale, Cashew. உத்தமபாத்திரம், s. Characters or persons of the highest moral excellency, . உத்தமபுருஷன், s. A person of straight morality, a very good man, சன் மார்க்கன். 2. A person of excellent symmetry of body, இலட்சணமுடையான். 3. To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. uri (p. 64) s. A small dry or liquid measure, அரைப்படி, marked thus, வரி. 2. (p.) Rind, peel, bark (of some trees), a skin stripped off, either raw, dried, tanned, dressed or otherwise, தோல். 3. Coriander, கொத்துமல்லி, Coriandrum sativum, L. 4. The root of the abstract noun உரிமை, propriety, peculiarity. 5. One of the four general divisions of words, including adjectives and adverbs, also all words expressive of abstract qualities, உரிச்சொல். உரிச்சீர், s. A kind of metrical foot. See சீர். உரிச்சொல், s. One of the four classes of words. See உரி. வினையுரிச்சொல், s. Adverb. பெயருரிச்சொல், s. Adjective. உரிநெல், s. A half measure of paddy. உரிப்பொருள், s. The third division of அகப்பொருள், denoting the intercourse of the sexes. உரியரிசி, s. a half measure of rice. (நன்னூல்.) உரியாழாக்கு, s. Five-eighths of a measure; marked . மரவுரி, s. A kind of dress made of the bark or rind of a tree, used by wild tribes and ascetics, சீரை. 12)

uruḷ (p. 65) --உருளை, s. A carriagewheel, தேருருள். 2. (p.) The fourth lunar mansion, உரோகணி. 3. A wheeled carriage, பண்டி. 4. A circle, வட்டம். உருளரிசி, s. A spice, coriander seed, கொத்துமல்லி, Coriandrum sativum. 45)

ulvi (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. and n. To be sparing in order to leave a supply for others, to forbear, or be reluctant, &c., be bashful in eating, &c., உலோபமாயிருக்க. 2. To evince diffidence in accepting favors, gifts, &c.; to be diffident, or backward in coming into company, கூசியொழுக. 3. To restrain one's self, forbear, ஒறுக்க.--Note. This word seems to be a causative of உலவு in a contracted form. உலவியரமற்சாப்பிடும். Eat without restraint, take as much as you like. சாப்பாட்டையுலவிக்க. To eat food sparingly. அவருடைய முகத்துக்காகவுலவித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். One his account I forbore (to act as otherwise I would have done). இங்கேசாப்பிடவுலவிப்பானேன்? Why should you be unwilling to eat here? தன்வயிற்றைத்தானுலவிக்கலாமா? Ought one to deprive himself of necessary food? 8)
