To take off, take away, extract, take out, remove a stain, dirt, humor, &c., or one body from another, chemically, or otherwise combined, ஒன்றிலிருந்தெடுக்க. 3. To undertake, take in hand, enter upon, தொடங்க. 4. To adopt--as a sentiment, &c., receive, take--as one's own, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. Will he who cannot pick out a stone from rice be able to lift the stone architrave of a temple vestibule? i. e. he who is incapable of little matters must be incapable of great ones. விழுந்தவனையெடாமலுதைக்கலாமா. Is it proper to kick, instead of raising, a fallen man? இந்தச்சீலையையெந்தக்கடையிலெடுத்தாய். In what bazaar did you buy this cloth? புல்லெடுக்கிறதரை. Ground covered with an exuberant growth of grass. எடாதஎடுப்பு, s. Living above one's rank, circumstances, means, &c., engaging in an enterprise, beyond one's powers, &c. எடாதஎடுப்பெடுக்கலாகாது. It is improper to engage in an enterprise above one's circumstances. எடுகூலி, s. Porterage, hire for carrying burdens, சுமைக்கூலி. எடுத்தடிமடக்கு, s. Retort, turning a person's reasons or remarks against himself, confuting one by his own arguments, anticipating a person in word, or action, in order to check, or thwart him in his object; interrupting one in speaking, &c. 2. Temerity, rashness; speaking, answering, or acting rashly, துணிவு. எடுத்தடிவைக்க, inf. To begin to step--as a child, காலைப்பெயர்த்துவைக்க. எடுத்தபடி, adv. Suddenly, at once, promptly, extemporaneously. எடுத்தமொழியினெய்தவைத்தல், v. noun. An author's forming rules applicable to the examples he finds-one of the உத்தி. எடுத்தலளவையாகுபெயர், s. A lewd woman, குடும்பத்தைவிட்டுவெளிப்பட்டவள். எடுபட்டுப்போக, inf. To be raised --as a siege. 2. To be abolished. 3. To be defeated. அங்கிருந்தபள்ளிக்கூடம்எடுபட்டுப்போயிற்று.... A haughty person, an upstart, one who lives above his rank or circumstances, மேட்டிமைக் காரன். எடுப்புச்சாய்ப்பு, Gentility, genteel and obliging behavior, united with display, pomp, grandeur, &c., உயர்வுதாழ்வு. எடுப்புண்டது, appel. n. ēṭu (p. 78) s. The petals of a flower, பூவி தழ். 2. (சது.) The eye-lids, கண்ணிமை. 3. (c.) Cream, பாலேடு. 4. The leaves of the palmyra or talipet tree, பனையோலை. 5. The leaf of a book, கோத்தவேடு. 6. An ola book, ஏட்டுப்புஸ்தகம். ஏட்டிலேகயிறுசாத்துதல். Putting the string between the leaves of a book and noticing the passage on which it lies, to ascertain one's luck, determine one's choice, &c. ஏட்டுச்சுரைக்காய்கறிக்காமா. Will pumpkin (as written) in the book serve for curry? i. e. the bare rehearsal of a privilege does not amount to its enjoyment. ஏடுகோக்க, inf. To string the leaves of an ola book. ஏடுசேர்க்க, inf. To make an ola book. ஏடுபடர்ந்தபால்--ஏடுபடிந்தபால், s. Milk in which cream is formed. ஏடுவார, inf. To pare olas. ஏடெழுத, inf. To write the alphabet for a child, for which a lucky day is chosen, ceremonies attended, a feast provided for relatives, &c. 2. To begin a book for a learner. ஏட்டின்படிப்பு--ஏட்டின்கல்வி, s. Learning by rote, learning which requires frequent reference to books, learning without understanding what is learnt. கள்ளேடுபோட, inf. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். oṉṟu (p. 84) s. One (the numeral), ஒன் றென்னுமெண். 2. One thing, அஃறிணையொரு மை. 3. Union, coalescence, ஐக்கம். 4. In construction, it means either, or--as ஒன் றுதீவினையைவிடு, ஒன்றுஅதின்பயனைநுகர், either abandon your evil deeds, or take the consequences. ஒன்றத்தனைகொடுத்தால்நானிரண்டத்தனைகொடுப் பேன். If he has given once as much, I will give twice. ஒன்றாறுகிறானில்லை. He so wonders that he knows not when to cease extolling. 2. His sorrow, regret, &c. is unremitted. ஒன்றிலிருந்தொன்றிலேபாய்தல். Talking loosely, incoherently, jumping from one thing to another. ஒன்றினுளொன்று. One among another, reciprocally, mutually. ஒன்றுகேள். Listen to a word of advice, hear what I have to say. ஒன்றுக்குமசையான். He is moved by nothing. ஒன்றுமொன்றுமிரண்டென்றுதெரியாதவன். A person so ignorant that he cannot tell that one and one make two. ஒன்றுவிட்டொருநாள். Every other day, alternate days. ஒன்றேயொன்று. One only. ஒன்றோஅவனாலேகேடு. Have I sustained but one loss by him? நான்சொன்னதொன்று, அவன்செய்ததொன்று. I told him one thing and he did another. மனமொன்றுவாக்கொன்று. His profession is one thing and intention another. ஒன்றரை, s. One and a half. ஒன்றன்கூட்டம், s. A collection of similar things, ஒருபொருட்கூட்டம். (p.) ஒன்றன்பால், s. [in grammar.] Neuter singular of the irrational class, அஃறி ணையொருமைப்பால். ஒன்றாய், adv. Together, altogether, ஒன்றாக. ஒன்றாலொன்றும். By any means, யாதொன்றினாலும். ஒன்றாலொன்றுங்குறையில்லை. There is no lack at all--commonly applied to provisions, the country produce, &c. ஒன்றி, s. [vul. ஒண்டி.] One, alone, solitary, lonely (spoken of persons), தனி. ஒன்றிக்காரன்--ஒன்றியாள், s. A bachelor, a widower, a single or lonely person, தனியாள். ஒன்றினமுடித்தறன்னினமுடித்தல், v. noun. [in grammar.] Forming a rule or definition so as to include others, ஒருத்தி. ஒன்றுக்கு. For one thing, viz.: to make water--the common expression among school boys when asking to go out for this purpose. ஒன்றுக்கிருக்க, inf. To sit or squat down or go for one thing, viz.: to make water, நீர்விட. ஒன்றுக்குப்போக, inf. To make water. ஒன்றுக்கொன்று. To or for each other. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுசரி. They are equal, alike, &c. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுபேசிக்கொண்டார்கள். [vul.] They have called each other by hard names. ஒன்றுக்கொன்றுவித்தியாசம். Different one from another. ஒன்றுபட, inf. To become reconciled, ஒப்புரவாக. 2. To be united, to coalesce, பொருந்த. ஒன்றுபடுத்த, inf. To bring about a union or acquaintance between persons, ஒருமைப்படுத்த. 2. To reconcile, ஒப் புரவாக்க. ஒன்றுபாதி, s. [prov.] A moiety, a half-commonly of land, அரை. 2. Midnight, நடுச்சாமம். அவன்தன்சரக்கையொன்றுபாதியாகவிற்றுப்போட் டான். He sold his goods at half price. ஒன்றுமண்டடி--ஒன்றுமன்றடி, s. Concord, union, harmony, intimate familiarity. 2. Confusion, want of order or system. ஒன்றுமறியாதவன், s. One who knows nothing. ஒன்றுமறியாதவனுமில்லைஎல்லாமறிந்தவனுமில்லை. None is so ignorant as to know nothing --none so wise as to know every thing. ஒன்றுமற்றவன், s. A useless person, உபயோகமற்றவன். 2. A very poor person, தரித்திரன். ஒன்றுமில்லாமை--ஒன்றுமின்மை, s. Utter destitution, the relinquishing of every thing--as an act of devotion. (அறநெறி.) ஒன்றேகால், s. One and a quarter. ஒன்றொழிபொதுச்சொல், s. [in grammar.] Terms common to both genders, one only of which is understood, the other being excluded by the connexion, இருதிணையாண்பெண்ணுளொன்றனை யொழிக்கும்பொதுச்சொல்--as ஆயிரமக்கள்பொரு தார், a thousand persons fought; i. e. men. 33)

ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும். The right of reciting the vedas belongs to the three superior classes; i. e. brahmans, kings, and merchants. (அகப்.) ஓதன்மை, v. noun. The act of reading, ஓதற்றன்மை. 2. Chanting, பாடல். (p.) 91)

ōlai (p. 84) s. A palm leaf of any species, an ola, பனை, தெங்குமுதலியவற்றினோலை. 2. The leaf of the தாழை or wild pine-apple tree, தாழையோலை. 3. An ola letter, a written ola, a writing or document, எழுதுமோலை. 4. The summons of Yama, நமனோலை. 5. (p.) (சது.) Sound, ஒலி. நாளையோலையுந்தூதரும்வரின். If to-morrow the messengers of Yama come with the summons. (வைரா.) ஓலைக்கட்டு, s. A bundle of palmyra leaves. ஓலைக்கணக்கர், s. Learners at school, பள்ளியிற்படிப்போர். ஓலைக்கணக்கரொலியடங்கும்புன்மாலை. Cinder of the ola--as burning, floating flakes, dry pieces of ola. ஓலைக்குடை, s. An umbrella made of palm leaves. ஓலைக்கொடி, s. [prov.] An ola kite. ஓலைச்சிறகு, s. The half of a palmyra leaf. ஓலைச்சுருள், s. An ola letter inclosed in a செந்திரிக்கம். ஓலைதீட்ட, inf. To write on the ola, ஓலையிலெழுத. ஓலைதீட்டும்படை, s. A style, an iron pen, எழுத்தாணி. ஓலைபோக்க--ஓலைவிட, inf. To send a note. கூற்றைவெல்குவம்வருகவென்னாவோலைவிட்டு. Despatching a challenge to the regent of the dead-- ஓலைப்பூ, s. [vul.] The flower of the wild pine-apple tree, தாழம்பூ. ஓலைமுத்திரை, s. A stamp imprinted on a palmyra leaf. ஓலைமுரி, s. Unevenness of a palm leaf. ஓலையாள், s. A carrier of palm leaf letters. ஓலையெழுத, inf. To write a letter on a palmyra leaf. ஓலைவாங்க, inf. To receive an ola; i. e. the summons of death; to die. ஓலைவீடு, s. A house thatched with palmyra leaves. ஓலைவேலி, s. A hedge platted with palm leaves. பட்டோலை, s. A written order, royal edicts. 2. A writing from dictation. காதோலை, s. Ear-hoop of palm leaf. 2. (fig.) Ear-hoop made of gold, worn by women. குருத்தோலை, s. A young shoot of palm leaf. படியோலை, s. The duplicate of a document. (பெரியபு.) படையோலை--பாரோலை, s. A palmyra leaf or leaves on which the fruit of the palmyra are kept when they are unhusked, preparatory to their being inspissated. பிணியோலை, s. An amulet made of palmyra leaf, tied as a remedy to the waist of children supposed to be possessed of a demon. ஔ--ஔகாரம். The twelfth or last of the vowels in Tamil, உயிரெழுத்தி லொன்று. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம், s. The letter ஔ shortened in sound, சார்பெழுத்துக்களி லொன்று. 127) *

klai (p. 96) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To disperse, disorder, derange, break up, disorganize, scatter, confuse, disturb, rout, repulse, dissipate, defeat, drive away, dispel, chase away, குலைக்க. 2. To separate one from a company, to get one out, to detach, banish, exile, exclude, நீக்க. 3. To disunite, disjoin, part, பிரிக்க. 4. To get one dismissed from office, from school, &c., தள்ளுவிக்க. 5. To frustrate, thwart, எண்ணத்தைக்கலைக்க. 6. To put stringed instruments out of tune by use, சதிக லைக்க. 7. To distract or disturb the mind, மனதைக்கலைக்க. 8. To disturb a nest of birds, குருவிக்கூட்டைக்கலைக்க. ஈயைக்கலைத்துத்தேனெடுத்தான். He chased away the bees and took the honey. கூடினமேகங்களைக்காற்றுக்கலைத்தது. The wind has dispersed the clouds. எனக்குச்சகாயஞ்செய்யவிருந்தான்வேறொருவனவ னைக்கலைத்தான். When his intention was to assist me another dissuaded him. கலைத்துப்போட--கலைத்துவிட, inf. To confound, perplex. குடும்பத்தைக்கலைக்க, inf. To cause the breaking up of a family. காடுகலைக்க, inf. To beat the bush, &c., in order to start game. 2. To terrify by calling under officers, servants, &c., to a strict account. கலைத்தல்--கலைப்பு, v. noun. Dispersion. 274)

kl (p. 96) கற்கிறேன், கற்றேன், கற்பேன், கற்க, v. a. To learn, study, acquire knowledge, கல்விகற்க. 2. To practise arts, the use of arms, படைக்கலமுதலியபயில. கற்ககசடறக்கற்பவைகற்றபினிற்கவதற்குத்தக. Learn perfectly what thou hast to learn, and when thou hast learned it, act upon and persist in it. (திருவள்.) கல்லாதவன், s. An illiterate, ignorant man, an idiot. கல்லாமை, v. noun. A very young scholar, கற்குஞ்சிறுவன். 2. One who has acquired a smattering of knowledge--as taught him without exercising judgment; a superficial scholar,சிறிதுகற்றவன். கற்றுக்கொடுக்க, inf. To instruct. கற்றுக்கொள்ள, inf. To learn. கற்றுச்சொல்லி, s. A poet's assistant who learns and sings his verses, துணைக்கவிஞன். கற்றல், v. noun. Learning. கற்றல்கேட்டல்பயிறல். In making an accomplished scholar, study, enquiry or (hearing), intercourse with the learned are necessary. 276)
