(அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Five simple metals are given in the native lexicons--gold, silver, copper, iron, and lead or tin, பஞ்சலோகம். Wils. p. 725. LOHA. To these are sometimes added two mixed metals--as வெண்கலம், a mixture of copper and tin, making bell-metal, &c., and தரா, a compound of copper and zinc, or pinchbeck, &c. உலோகக்கட்டி, s. kīẕ (p. 113) s. Place or space, under, below, beneath, downward, low or nether; the bottom, கீழிடம். 2. The east, கிழக்கு. 3. A pit, a hole, பள்ளம். 4. The nether regions, the worlds below, கீழுலகம். 5. Forgetfulness, மறதி. 6. Bridle, reins, bit, கடிவாளம். 7. A low caste, கீழ்மக்கள். (p.) கீணர், s. [கீழ்நர்.] Low, mean people, the base, the vulgar, எளியோர். கீழது, s. That which is under or below; bottom. கீழதுமேலதாக்கிப்போட, inf. To overturn, upset, capsize; to overthrow, to defeat. கீழறுக்க, inf. To burrow, to excavate, to make a subterranean passage, to undermine, பூமியிற் சுரங்கஞ்செய்ய. 2. (fig.) To undermine, to injure by any underhand, clandestine means, சதிசெய்ய. கீழறை, s. An under-ground room, a cellar, நிலவறை. 2. A cavern, a cell, a hole or passage under ground, வளை. கீழாக, inf. To become depressed, to sink--as a stalk, a heap of muck, &c.; to deteriorate, to waste--as the body by use or disease; or as property, &c., தாழ் வடைய. கீழாக--கீழாய s. Under, below, beneath. கீழாயிருக்க, inf. To be below, to be mean, to be inferior. கீழாலவத்தை, s. 'Descending states of the soul.' State and degree of consciousness, commencing with objective sensations and descending to subjective feeling and contemplation, the mind receding farther and farther from objective impressions and associations. Hindu physiologists fancy that the mind descends from its seat in the forehead to its other seats, the neck, breast, umbilicus and terminus rectum. (தத்துவக். சிவ. சி.) கீழிருக்க, inf. To lie under, to be under one's dominion or control. கீழாறு, s. A river under ground, பூமி யினுள்ளோடுமாறு. 2. A river in the Congu country, கொங்குதேசத்தாறு. கீழாறுகொண்டுபோயிற்று. The under ground river has carried it away--said of things lost without knowing how. கீழுக்குப்போக, inf. To be diminishes, to be reduced. அவன்புத்தியுங்கல்வியும்வரவரக்கீழுக்குப்போகி றது. His understanding and knowledge are more and more diminishing. கீழோங்கி, s. [prov.] An inferior class or fishermen--as distinguished from மே லோங்கி, a higher rank. கீழ்நோக்க, inf. To look downward, to tend downward, கீழ்ப்பார்க்க. 2. To be sensual, grovelling, to tend toward secularities, இழிவானதைவிரும்ப. 3. To be on the decline--as to wealth, &c.; to go to ruin, to come to naught, தாழ்வடைய. கீழ்நோக்கித்திட்ட--கீழ்நோக்கியேச inf. To use obscene language, to assail with very indecent speech. கீழ்நோக்கு--கீழ்நோக்கம் v. noun. Looking downward, downward tendency, கீழ்ப்பார்வை. 2. Low or grovelling pursuits, a base inclination; underhand, clandestine purpose. கீழ்மேலாக, adv. Upside down. கீழ்ப்பட, inf. To be subdued, to yield, to be submissive, to become inferior, கீழ்ப்படிய. 2. To be subject, to be subordinate, to submit to, அடங்க. 3. To be degraded, mean, base, இழிவுபட. கீழ்ப்படிய--கீழ்ப்பணிய inf. To submit, to yield, to obey. கீழ்ப்படியாத்தனம்--கீழ்ப்படியாமை, s. Disobedience, insubordination. கீழ்ப்படிவு, v. noun. Submission, obedience, subordination, subjection, கீழ்ப்ப ணிவு. 2. Docility, tractableness, அமைவு. கீழ்ப்படுத்த--கீழ்ப்படியப்பண்ண, inf. To subdue, to subject, to subordinate, to subjugate, to quell, அடக்க. 2. To lower, to bring down, to reduce, தாழ்வுபடு த்த. 3. To degrade, ஈனப்படுத்த. கீழ்நோக்கினநட்சத்திரம், s. [in astro.] A lunar mansion looking downward-opposed to மேனோக்கினநட்சத்திரம். They are twelve in number. (உள்ளமு.) கீழ்நோக்கினராசி, s. [in astrol.] A zodiacal sign which looks downward.-Note. These signs, as well as the கீழ்நோக் கினநட்சத்திரம், are favorable for planting esculent roots and digging wells. கீழ்மேற்றென்வடல், s. The east, west, north and south. 42)

caṉṉiyācam (p. 174) s. Asceticism, abandonment of all worldly possessions and attachments, being the highest and last of the four brahmanical states. See ஆச் சிரமம். 2. Relinquishment, renunciation, துறவு; [ex சம், entirely, et நியாசம், casting away.] W. p. 891. SANNYASA. சன்னியாசந்தரிக்க, inf. To assume the state and garb of the சன்னியாசி. சன்னியாசமார்க்கம், s. The order of சன்னியாசி. 2. The perpetual bachelorhood of a person of good morals. சன்னியாசமுத்திரை, s. The distinctive marks of the சன்னியாசி, viz.: the staff, the waterpot, an unshaven beard, dishevelied locks, ochred clothes, &c. *சா, A compound letter composed of ச் and ஆ. 2. s. [ex Sa. Jya, to decay.] Death, mortality, மரணம். 3. Devil, பேய். 4. [in astron.] The chord of an arc; but commonly used for அர்த்தச்சா--the sine of an arc. 5. An equation of the centre--as மந்தச்சா. 6. The annual parallax, of a planet. See கற்கிச்சா and மகரச்சா. W. p. 355. JYA. சாக்காடு, s. Mortality, death, மரணம்; [ex காடு, a verbal affix.] சாக்காட்ட--சாக்காக்க, inf. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. To abandon earthly associations, worldliness, secularity, &c. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Celibacy. See under சமுசாரம். 3) *

caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. See also கிராமச்சா--மூலச்சா, the sine; and கோடி ச்சா, the cosine. 4) *

camucāram (p. 163) s. The family state, as tending to promote earthly attachments, இல்வாழ்க்கை. 2. Family, குடும்பம். (c.) 3. Worldly attachments or connections, secularity--as distinguished from abstract devotion; earthliness, worldliness, உலகப் பற்று. 4. Mortal or corporeal existence; the state of being in connexion with and subject to births, பிறவிக்கேதுவானவை. W. p. 876. SAMSARA. 5. [little used.] The world --as the habitation of mortals or corporeal beings, உலகசஞ்சாரம். 6. [vul.] A wife, மனைவி. சமுசராஞ்சரலதுக்கம். Matrimony has many sorrows. சமுசாரம்விழுந்துபோயிற்று. The wife is dead. சமுசாரத்திலடிபட்டவன். One who has experienced the troubles, accompanying the matrimonial state, and house-keeping. சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. House-hold duties. சமுசாரக்காரன், s. A married man. 2. A man who has children. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Renunciation of matrimonial life, celibacy. சமுசாரத்தொல்லை, s. Cares and vexation of a family. சமுசாரநாசம், s. The ruin of a family. 2. (p.) Annihilation of the passions; overcoming earthly attachments--as an ascetic. சமுசாரபாரம், s. The burden and responsibility of a family, &c.--as குடும்ப பாரம். சமுசாரமார்க்கம், s. Conjugal life; the family state, as distinguished from the state of the bachelor or ascetic. 2. Domestic duties. (c.) சமுசாரம்நடத்த--சமுசாரம்பண்ண, inf. To manage a family. சமுசாரவாளி, s. [vul.] A married man. சமுசாரவாழ்வு, s. Conjugal life, conjugal felicity. சமுசாரம்பெருத்தவன், appel. n. One who has a large family. சமுசாரவிருத்தி, s. Increase of family. 2. [prov.] Family cares, concerns, affairs, சமுசாரத்தனம். சமுசாரி, s. A married person--man or woman, கிரகஸ்தன். (c.) 2. (fig.) One involved in the results of actions, transmigration, secularities, &c., பந்தமுடைய வன். 3. [loc.] A husband-man, a tiller; a farmer, குடியானவன். சமுசாரித்தொழில், s. Husbandry. சமுசாரிமார்க்கம், s. tuṟ (p. 251) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To leave, relinguish, desert, reject, discard, கைவிட. 2. To renounce matrimony, and secular things, for an ascetic life, இல்லறந்துறக்க. 3. To neglect, dispense with, omit, avoid, தவிர்க்க. (p.) தாய்சொற்றுறந்தால்வாசகமில்லை. There is no excuse for slighting a mother's word, (Avv.) அதைத்துறந்து, v. participle. Leaving this, besides this. துறந்துள்ள, inf. To renounce one's relations. துறந்தார்-துறந்தோர், s. (plu.) Ascetics, recluses, those that have renounced the world for an ascetic life, sannyasis, நீத் தோர். துறப்பு--துறவு, v. noun. Relinquishment, rejection, விடுகை. 2. Renunciation of matrimony and social life, for a life of austerities, of wandering and dependence an charitable gifts for support; or retirement to the desert, சன் னியாசம். 3. The principles of abstraction, or renunciation of secularities, as seated and operative in the mind of the devout ascetic, leading to corresponding actions. துறவர்--துறவோர், s. (plu.) nir (p. 277) A Sanscrit prefix implying negation, privation, இன்மை, as நிர்நாமன், the nameless; also fulness, நிறைவு, as நிர்நாசம், entire destruction. The final ர், often takes the particle உ, as நிரு; sometimes changes to ஷ், as நிஷ்களங்கம், being spotless; to ச், as நிச்சிந்தை, a quiet mind, and to ன், as நின் மலம். See துர். நிரங்குசம், s. [in the Agama log.] Indefinite or indistinct knowledge, perception, &c. See காட்சி. நிருவிகற்பசமாதி--நிருவிகற்பச்சமாதி, s. The state of the ascetic, void of all affection, passion, &c., ஒர்யோகநிலை. நிருவிகாரம்--நிர்விகாரம், s. Unchangeableness, as in the Deity, who, in performing his operations is unaffected by them and in the actions of creatures has no participation or contamination, விகாரமின்மை. 2. Freedom from passions, &c., as நிர்க்குணம். நிருவிகாரி--நிர்விகாரி, s. One free from change as the Deity, or as the soul approximating to the Deity, கடவுள். நிருவிக்கினம்--நிர்விக்கினம், s. Freedom from obstruction, impediment, இடையூறி ன்மை. நிருவிசாரம்--நிர்விசாரம், s. Carelessness, recklessness, வேண்டாமை. 2. Tranquillity, freedom from, கவலையின்மை. நிருவிடம்--நிருவிஷம்--நிர்விஷம். s. A plant, Curcuma Zedoaria from which a poisonous drug is extracted, used as an antidote to snake bites, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. (fig.) [ex நிர், fulness.] A very wicked person, துன்மார்க்கன். நிர்க்குணம், s. [vul. நிர்க்குணம்] Being without attributes, குணமின்மை. நிர்க்குணன், s. The Deity. See குணம். நிர்த்தாட்சிணியம், s. An unfavorable look, unkindness, unmindfulness, கண் ணோட்டமின்மை. நிர்த்தூளி, s.
