aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. kṭṭai (p. 88) s. A block, a log, a small stump, a slab, a clump, குற்றி. 2. A post or stake to fasten an animal to, கடாவுமுளை. 3. Fire-wood, விறகு. 4. A short low dwarfish thing, thing grown short by use, worn off--as a pen, &c., தேய்ந்தது. 5. A lifeless body, உடல். 6. Defect, imperfection, inferiority, குறைவு. 7. The refuse or residuum of கேழ்வரகு, தினை and சாயவேர் root after pounding and sifting, திப்பி. 8. Roughness of the beard after shaving, மயிர் க்கட்டை. இந்தச்சீலையகலக்கட்டை. This cloth is narrow. இதுமுழக்கட்டையானசீலை. This cloth is deficient in length and breadth. அந்தமரத்திற்கிந்தமரங்கட்டை. This piece of timber is shorter than that. கல்வியிலவன்கட்டை. [prov.] He is deficient in learning. கட்டைகடாவ, inf. To fasten a splinter or pointed stick, &c. கட்டைக்காலி, s. [prov. vul.] A bear, கரடி--as short legged--and sometimes applied to women, cows, &c. கட்டைக்குரல், s. [prov.] A weak voice, கம்மினகுரல். கட்டைக்குருத்து, s. [prov.] The last tender leaf of a plantain which envelopes the sheath or blossom and shoots out a little before it. கட்டைநெருப்பு, s. Coal fire. கட்டைப்புத்தி, s. Shallow wit, weak intellect, stupidity, தடிப்புத்தி. கட்டையடிக்க, inf. To pass a stick through a plucked jack-fruit to ripen it, ஆப்படிக்க. 2. To hurt the foot against a stump by striking on it, காலிற்கட்டையிடற. 3. To drive a stake into the ground to tie animals to, முளைகடாவ. கட்டையன், s. (fem. கட்டைச்சி.) A short person, குறளன். கட்டைவாக்கு, s. Dimness in a precious stone, இரத்தினத்தின்மங்கலொளி. கட்டைவிரல், s. The thumb or great toe, காலின்பெருவிரல். கட்டைவைத்தல், v. noun. cirai (p. 185) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To shave, to cut or pare close to the surface--as by a razor, மயிர்கழிக்க; [ex Sa. Kshura, to cut.] 2. [vul. a corruption of திரைக்க.] To gather up the skirts of a garment--as சீலையைத்திரைக்க. வேலைமினக்கெட்ட அம்பட்டன் பூனைக்குட்டியைச் சிரைத்தானாம். The unemployed barber shaved the cat, i. e., the idle will be mis-employed. சிரைகூலி, s. Barber's hire. சிரைதொழில்--சிரைவேலை, s. [prov.] Shaving, tonsure. 2. (fig.) A wearisome, unprofitable task, வீண்வேலை. (c.) சிரைத்துப்போட, inf. [vul.] To shave the privities. (in abuse.) சிரைத்துப்போட்டார். He has shaved me, i. e., attempted my injury. சிரைப்பிக்க, s. cūtakam (p. 200) s. Birth, delivery, பிறப்பு. 2. (c.) Uncleanness, ceremonial impurity of a woman from catamenia, மகளீர்தொடக்கு. W. p. 94. SOOTAKA. 3. Ceremonial impurity of a person from the death of a relative, rendering him incompetent to perform certain rites; that from the father's side being greater, the mother's less, மரணசூதகம். 4. Ceremonial uncleanness in general, as of a person, house, clothes, &c., from a death, from menstruation, childbirth, miscarriage, touching a corpse or carcass; from shaving; contact of the finger, &c., with the spittle or any part of the mouth; touching one of low caste, or bathing in a tank of his village; or weeping, lamenting, &c., for a deceased acquaintance, தீட்டு. 5. Oldness, antiquity, பழமை.--Note. According to some, the causes of ceremonial impurity are five, viz.: 1. சனனாசூசம், or சாதகாசூசம், childbirth. 2. மரணாசூசம், or மிருதாசூசம், death. 3. சண்டாளநீரிற்றோய்தல், bathing in the waters used by low castes. 4. சுராபானம்பண்ணல், drinking toddy or ardent spirits. 5. பொய்கூறல், lying. The last seems but little regarded, also the fourth by many. Instead of the last three, the following are named by some; இருது சூதகம், menstruation. உச்சிட்டசூதகம், being spitten upon. சண்டாளபரிசசூதகம், contact with one of low caste. சூதகக்காரன், s. One ceremonially impure. சூதகக்காரி--சூதகஸ்திரி, s. A woman ceremonially unclean, by catamenia, or otherwise. சூதகக்கிராணி, s. A disease attending the childbirth, from wind or flatulency. சூதகங்கழிக்க, inf. To remove impurity by the prescribed means. சூதகங்காக்க, inf. To keep from society, abstain from venery, from shaving. &c., after a death, till the performance of the funeral rites. சூதகசன்னி, s. A disease of females from sexual intercourse during menstruation. See சன்னி. சூதகத்துக்குடையவர்கள், appel. n. Heirs of one deceased. சூதகமலடு, s. One of the six forms of barrenness. See மலடு. சூதகமாக, inf. To have the monthly course as a woman. (c.) சூதகமுட்டு, s. trumm (p. 225) --தர்மம்--தன்மம், s. Justice, right, equity, law, நீதி. 2. Virtue, moral and religious merit according to the Shastras, ஒழுக்கம். 3. Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. Peculiar or prescribed duty, occupation, &c., according to the different ranks and classes in society--as giving alms, &c., by the house-holder; administering justice, by kings; piety and performing rites by brahmans; courage, bravery in the solider; shaving in the barber, சாதிக்குரிய கருமம். 5. Inherent and peculiar qualities in plants, as fragrance in flowers; flavors in fruits, குணம். W. p. 439. DHARMMA.--Note. The negative of the above is அதர்மம், injustice, &c. தருமந்தலைகாக்கும். Uprightness will preserve the head; i. e. the life. தருமகர்த்தா, s. Wardens of a heathen temple. 2. Arbitrators, judges, jurymen. தருமகாரியம், s. A charitable act, subject, affair, &c. 2. (fig.) Marriage by charity. தருமகேத்திரம்--தருமக்ஷேத்திரம், s. A place near Delhi, where the Kurus and Pandavas fought. See குருசேத்திரம். தருமக்கட்டை, s. An orphan, supported by strangers, அநாதப்பிள்ளை. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. Seat of Justice. 2. prov. also தருமாசனபூமி.] An endowment of land to a temple. (c.) தருமாதருமம், s. Justice and injustice, virtue and vice, அறமும்மறமும். (c.) தருமாத்துமா, s. As தருமி. தருமி, s.
