There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

ēvu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏவினேன், வேன், ஏவ, v. a. To command, order, give directions to, கட்டளையிட. 2. To incite, stir up, prompt, stimulate, move, inspire, rouse, instigate, set on, தூண்ட. 3. To send, despatch, அனுப் ப. 4. To discharge (arrows &c.), shoot, throw, cast, எய்ய. 5. To excite and despatch (a demon against one), செலுத்த. ஏவாமக்கள்மூவாமருந்து. Sons who need not be directed by their parents are a continual comfort to them. அரக்கனேவியவேல். The dart thrown by the demon. ஏவிவிட, inf. To excite, prompt, rouse, instigate, set on. 2. A person of genius, Judgement, discrimination, acumen, penetration, discernment, புத்திசாலி. கருத்தானபாட்டு, s. A poem abstruse and full of meaning. கருத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To have a mind for a thing--as for labor, food, learning, &c., to be inclined to. கருத்துப்பிசகு, s. A wrong construction, or erroneous interpretation. கருத்துப்பிரிய, inf. To occur to the mind--as a good idea, plan, &c. 2. to be understood, comprehended, &c.--as an idea. கருத்துப்பொருள், s. Mental objects as opposed to காட்சிப்பொருள்--an object of sense. கருத்துரை, s. A commentary giving the scope of the text, பொழிப்புரை. கருத்துரைக்க, inf. To give the scope or substance of the text as a commentator, &c. கருத்துவெளிப்படுத்த, inf. To disclose one's intention, to make known one's opinion, &c. கருத்தெடுக்க, inf. To devise, invent a scheme, lay a project, discover the sense of a passage, to find out a meaning, கருத்தைக்காண. கருத்தொட்ட, inf. In the last sense, the word becomes குண to convey an adjective signification--as in குணகடல், குணதிசை, குணநாடு. குணக்குப்பண்ண, inf. A dictionary of synonymous words. See சதுரகராதி. பொருளதிகாரம், s. That part of ethics, which treats on the four themes or subjects embracing all kinds of knowledge and practice. See நாற்பொருள். பொருளாசை, s. Covetousness, avarice. பொருளிலக்கணம், s. Properties of things. This in grammar embraces: 1. அகப்பொருள், rules for amatory verses, see அகப்பாட்டுறுப்பு; 2. புறப்பொருள், rules for war-chants; which see. பொருளுதவி, s. A pecuniary aid. பொருள்கோள், s. Modes of constructing verse of which eight are given; 1. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், natural, as the nominative accompanied by its various attributes, adjuncts, &c., followed by its object, if any, and concluded by the verb; 2. மொழிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், construction, in which the nominative and verb are interchanged, with another nominative and verb; 3. நிரனிறைப்பொருள் கோள், when subjects, and attributes, or nominatives and their verbs, are given in distinct series, see நிரனிறை; 4. விற் பூண் or விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், when the nominative is at the beginning, and its verb at the end, or the contrary; 5. தரப்பிசைப்பொருள்கோள், when a noun or verb belongs alike to the preceding and following parts of a verse or sentence, see தாப்பிசை; 6. அளைமறிபாப்புப்பொ ருள்கோள், another kind of construction, see அளை; 7. கொண்டுகூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், a construction which requires the words to be selected here and there; 8. அடிமறி மாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், a verse in which the lines of the stanza are interchangeable, see அடிமறிமாற்று. பொருள்விளங்கவைத்தல், v. noun. mu (p. 356) num. adj. [contrac. of மு or மூன்று.] Three, third--used in combination. Most of the compounds may be referred to திரி. முக்கடுகம்--முக்கடுகு, s. Three spices, as திரிகடுகம். முக்கணன்--முக்கண்ணன், s. [lit. threeeyed one.] An epithet of Siva, சிவன். 2. Vinayaga, விநாயகன். 3. Virabadra, வீரபத்திரன். (சது.) முக்கணி--முக்கண்ணி, s. [fem.] An epithet of the sakti of Siva--as Kali, காளி, and Parvati, பார்வதி. (சது.) 2. A cocoa-nut, தேங்காய். முக்கரணம், s. The three classes of faculties, as திரிவிதகரணம். See கரணம். முக்கலம், s. Three kalams, or thirtysix markals. முக்கனி, s. The three special fruits. See முப்பழம். முக்காணி, s. A fraction, the 3/5 of a மாகாணி. முக்காதலர், s. [pl.] The triple friends, usually husband, a male friend, and a son; [ex காதலன்.] (சது.) முக்காதவழி, s. See காதம். முக்காலம், s. The three divisions of time. 2. The three tenses in grammar. These are இறந்தகாலம், நிகழ்காலம், எதிர்கா லம். See காலம். முக்காலமறிந்தவன், appel. n. An epithet of the Deity, as knowing the past, present, and future, கடவுள். முக்காலி, s. A three-footed stool, a tripod, as distinguished from நாற்காலி. முக்காலும், s. Three times. See கால், and குளி, v. முக்கால், s. Three fourths, 3/4. See under கால். முக்கால்நோக்கு--முக்கானோக்கு, v. noun. One of the four planetary aspects. See நோக்கு. முக்காழி, s. See காழி. முக்குடுமி, s. A trident, சூலம். (சது.) 2. A triple lock of hair. See சிலுப்பா, பக்கக் குடுமி. முக்குடை, s. [appel. முக்குடைச்செல் வன்.] The three umbrellas peculiar to Argha, viz.; சந்திரவட்டம், சகலபாசனம், நித் தியவினோதம். முக்குணம், s. Three principles in nature, Satva, Raja and Tama. See குணம். முக்குலம், s. The three races of kings: 1. Solar, or the race of the sun; 2. Lunar or the race of the moon; 3. Agni, the race of fire. முக்குலைச்சு, s. [prov. in cant numbers.] Three quarters, முக்கால். 2. A technical word used by certain tribes. முக்குழிச்சட்டி, s. A triple-holed-pan for baking cakes. A poem of thirty stanzas, divided into three parts of ten stanzas, the verses of each ten, containing different stanzas, and in each ten, the classification is diverse from the rest.
