அண்டம்
aṇṭam (p. 9) s. An egg, முட்டை. 2. Testicle, பீசம். Wils. p. 15. ANDA. 3. The solar system, உலகம். 4. An imaginary shell surrounding the earth and its accompanying sphere, அண்டகோளம். 5. எட்டு
eṭṭu (p. 73) s. The number eight denoted by அ, ஓரெண். 2. The eighth day funeral ceremony when food is presented to the manes of a deceased person, இறந்தஎட்டாம் நாட்சடங்கு; it is often contracted to எண். 3. Desire, ஆசை, impr. for எட்டை. எட்டிலேபத்திலே. Seldom, now and then. எட்டுக்குச்சோறிட்டுவைக்க. [prov.] To set rice, curry and other eatables for the deceased in the eighth day ceremony--as எட்டாந்துக்கங்கொண்டாட. எட்டுமிரண்டுமறியாதவன். A very dolt, an ignoramus. எட்டடிவிரியன், s. A kind of viper. எட்டனுருபு, s. The form of the eighth or vocative case. எட்டிலொன்று, s. One of eight things, one-eighth. எட்டுச்சார், s. [prov.] Two four square houses connected together. எட்டுத்திக்கு--எண்டிசை, s. He who possesses the eight attributes-the perfect one--a term applied in நிகண் டு, to Siva, சிவன், Argha, அருகன். எண்கோணம், s. An octagon, eight-sided figure, அஷ்டகோணம். எண்சாண், s. Eight spans. எண்சாணுடம்பு, s. The human body, eight spans high, each person according to his own span. எண்சாணுடம்புக்குஞ்சிரசேபிரதானம். The head is the chief of the eight span-body; i. e. in cases of difficulty apply to the chief. எண்சிறப்புள்ளோன், s. Argha, அருகன். எண்சுவை, s. The eight poetic expressions of passion. eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)
ஏழு
ēẕu (p. 79) . Seven, septuple, seven fold, ஓரெண்.--Note. Seven is considered a special or sacred number. As a prefix it is often எழு or ஏழ். எழுகடல்--ஏழ்கடல், s. The seven oceans. எழுநிலைக்கோபுரம், s. A tower seven stories high. எழுநிலைமாடம், s. A palace seven stories high, lit. with seven door frames one above another. எழுபிறப்பு--ஏழ்பவம்--ஏழ்பிறப் பு, s. The seven different living beings, viz.: 1. தேவர், supernals. 2. மக்கள், men. 3. விலங்கு, beasts. 4. பறவை, birds. 5. ஊர்வன, reptiles. 6. நீர்வாழ்வன, aquatic creatures. 7. தாவரம், immovable things --as trees, plants. ஏழடிபின்போக, inf. To accompany a poet or learned person seven steps on his departure. ஏழத்தனை. Seven-fold. ஏழரை--எழரையாண்டுச்சனி, s. The period of saturn's evil influence being seven-and-half years. See மங்கு சனி, பொங்குசனி, மரணசனி. ஏழனுருபு, s. The seventh case or local ablative, ஏழாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. ஏழாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage-shed when planted on the seventh day before the wedding, a lucky day being chosen. ஏழுகோணம், s. A heptagon, septangular figure. ஏழுதீவு, s. The seven continents. ஏழுபருவம், s. The seven stages of life. See பருவம். ஏழுலகம், s. The seven worlds, including the earth and six supernal worlds. ஏழேழு, s. Seven times seven. 2. Seven of each, எவ்வேழு. ஏழேழுதலைமுறை, s. Seven generations, the duplication of the numeral indicating and equal number of generations both on the side of husband and wife. ஏழ்பரியோன், s. The sun as drawn by seven green horses, ஆதித்தன். ஏழ்புரி, s. The seven sacred cities, also witten ஏழ்புர, and ஏழ்தலம். See புரி. ஈரேழுலகம், s. The fourteen worlds, viz.: seven supernal and seven infernal. See உலகம். ஏழ்சுரம், s. The seven sounds of the diatonic scale. எவ்வேழு, s. Seven of, to, for, or from each, seven by seven. 74)

kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. It is modified into eight kinds, ஓர் செய்யுட்பொருத்தம். 11. One of the பொருத்தம் concerning marriage, கணப்பொருத்தம். 12. A star, விண்மீன். (p.) கணந்தோறும். Every moment. ஒருகணத்திலேவந்துவிடுவேன். I will come in a moment. குணமென்னுங்குன்றேறிநின்றார் வெகுளிகணமேயுங் காத்தலரிது. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. A kind of marriage--that which takes place by the union of the parties themselves without the usual forms and ceremonies, அட்டமணத்திலொன்று. See மணம். (p.) கந்தருவப்புணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Illicit intercourse, தலைவனுந்தலைவியுமெதிர்ப்பட்டுப் புணர்கை. கந்தருவமணம், s. Marriage by unlawful union of the parties, ஓர்விவாகம். கந்தருவர், s. Unfading, imperishable, eternal youth, freshness, vigor, evergreen, அறிவில்லாமை. 11. A female ascetic, தவப்பெண். 12. A chaste youth. கன்னிக்கால், s. The first post set up in the wall of a new house facing south, decked with cloth, in imitation of a female, முதல்நாட்டுத்தம்பம். See கலியாணம். கன்னிக்கால்நாட்ட, s. To set up the first post in a large building. 2. To plant the first marriage post. கன்னிக்குட்டி, s. [prov.] The first kid of lamb. கன்னிக்கோழி, s. A pullet nearly arrived at maturity. கன்னிச்சவ்வு--கன்னிமுத்திரை, s. The hymen. கன்னித்திங்கள்--கன்னிமாதம், s. The month of September when the sun is in the sign virgo, புரட்டாசிமாதம். கன்னித்தீட்டு, s. The catamenia of a young woman, deemed impure in a higher degree than afterward. கன்னித்துவம்--கன்னிமை, s. Virginity, virgin age, கன்னித்தன்மை. கன்னிபுதன், s. Mercury in the sign virgo indicating learning in one born under its influence. கன்னிப்பருவம், s. The age of mature virginity. கன்னிப்பிள்ளைத்தாய்ச்சி, s. [prov.] A woman in her first pregnancy. கன்னிமதில், s. Imperishable fortress walls. கன்னிமார், s. Virgins, deified females who were pious virgins on earth, afterward born in deified forms, in the supernal worlds in some one of the three lower states of bliss, கன்னியர். கன்னிமையழித்தல்--கன்னியழித் தல், s. The crime of deflouring a virgin. 2. The guilt of suffering a virgin to be defloured. கன்னிமையழிய--கன்னியழிய, inf. To lose virginity, to be be defloured, கன்னிமைகெட. கன்னியழியாதபெண், s. A girl that has not lost her virginity. கா, A syllabic letter, the consonant க் and long vowel, ஆ, ஓரெழுத்து. 2. s. A pole with ropes attached on the shoulder, for carrying common burdens, or gifts to a temple, &c., காவடி. (c.) 3. (p.) kumpakaṉṉaṉ (p. 123) --கும்பகர்ணன், s. The gigantic brother of Rávan'a, whose ears were like a jar. He is said to have performed austerities to obtain immortality, நித்தியத்துவம்; but, under the evil influence of the supernals, who dreaded his power, he was made to falter in his words and to say, நித்திராத்துவம் (sleepiness), and he was thenceforward given up to sleep. cittar (p. 182) s. One of the eighteen classes of supernals, or demigods inhabiting the middle air or region between the earth and the sun, embracing several subdivisions, தேவகணத்தொருதிறத்தோர். 2. A class of magicians who, by the performance of certain mystical and magical rites, have acquired superhuman powers, being able to perform miracles; or one or more of the eight சித்தி, அஷ்டசித்தியடைந் தோர். 3. Ascetics who, by mystical and austere practices, have attained one or all of the five purposes: viz., the affluence, the form, or the society of the supernals, residence in the divine lokas; or identification with the deity, ஞானசித்தியடைந்தோர்; [ex சித்தி, success.] W. p. 924. சித்து
cittu (p. 183) s. Intellect, intelligence, the principle of knowledge or intellect in the deity, or human souls; spirit (as opposed to சடம் or அசித்து, matter or non-intelligence) in all its diversified forms in the various beings inhabiting the universe, whether supernal, infernal, human, brute or vegetable; all being capable of knowing and enjoying the deity, அறிவுப்பொருள். W. p. 325. CHIT. 2. (a change of சித்தி.) Illimitable and supernatural powers, obtained by abstract devotion, and exercised at pleasure; including the eight சித்தி, which see. 3. Legerdemain, sleight of hand, exhibition of supernatural appearances by means of magic, alchemy, &c., மாயாவித்தை. 4. The யாகம் sacrifice. சித்திலாதபோதுவேறுசீவனில்லையில்லையே. When there is no intelligence, there is no life. i. e. to deny intelligence [as a first cause.] is to deny that there is life. சித்தசித்து, s. Spirit and matter, or intelligence and non-intelligence--as eternal, uncreated principles in nature. சித்தசித்தீசுரன், s. Spirit, matter, and God--as constituting the world. (p.) சித்தாகாரம், s. Spirituality, incorporeality belonging to the spirit or intellect, as refined, purified and tending toward the deity; [ex ஆகாரம், form.] சித்துக்காரன், s. As சித்துவித்தைக்காரன். சித்துப்பறக்க, inf. To fly or pass through ether, as the சித்தர். 2. (fig.) To disappear, as a person; spoken in surprise or contempt. 3. (fig.) To carry one's self proudly, to take airs; to be supercilious. சித்துப்பொருள், s. An intelligent being, the faculty of intelligence, as in the deity or a soul--oppo. to சடப்பொருள். சித்துரூபம்--சிற்சொரூபம், s. Imbodied intelligence, a spiritual nature. 2. The deity as identified with the intellect. சித்துரூபன்--சிற்சொரூபன், s. The deity as a pure intelligence, கடவுள். சித்துவித்தை, s. As சித்து, 3. சித்துவித்தைகற்றவன்--சித்துவித்தைக் காரன், s. One skilled in deceptive performances. Compare சித்தன். சித்துவிளையாட--சித்துசெய்ய--சித் துகாட்ட, inf. To juggle, to play tricks, to exhibit supernatural appearances. சிற்சத்தி, s. சுடர்
cuṭr (p. 193) s. Light, brilliance, brightness, lustre, ஒளி. (c.) 2. The sun, சூரியன். 3. The moon, சந்திரன். 4. Fire, நெருப்பு. 5. A burning lamp, விளக்கு. 6. The flame of a candle, தீச்சிகை. (சது.) சுடர்விளக்காயினுந் தூண்டுகோல் ஒன்று வேணும். Though a lamp burn brightly, it will need a wick-pricker, i. e, the best require stirring up. சுடரெறிய, inf. To radiate, gleam, sparkle--as some precious gems. சுடரெண்ணெய், s. Drops of burning oil from a lamp. 2. Oil burnt in drops for medicinal purposes. 3. Margosa oil extracted by fire. சுடரோன், s. The sun, சூரியன். சுடர்கால, inf. To emit rays--as the sun. (p.) சுடர்க்கடை, s. Fire fly, மின்மினி. (p.) சுடர்க்கொடி, s. Incense of burnt camphor, ஆரதிகர்ப்பூரம். சுடர்ச்செலவு, s. [in astrol.] A division of the rising sign into two equal parts, for casting nativities. See இலக்கி னம். சுடர்த்தகழி, s. A small candelabria. சுடர்நிலை, s. A candlestick, விளக்குத் தண்டு. (p.) சுடர்மழுங்க, inf. To grow dim as the sun or moon in an eclipse, or when overcast. 2. To become dim as a lamp. சுடர்மௌலியர், s. The Devas, or supernals, as radiantly crowned with divine gems, or a halo of glory, வானோர். சுடர்விட--சுடர்விட்டெரிய, inf. To burn brightly or cast a long flame, as a lamp. (c.) சுடர்விழ, inf. To drop, as burning flames from a lamp. சுடர்விழுத்த, inf. [prov.] To cause burning oil to fall in drops by setting fire to a cloth suffused with it. சுடர்விழியோன், s. Virabadra, a form of Siva, வீரபத்திரன். முச்சுடர், s. The sun, moon and fire, as representing the three eyes of Siva, சூரியசந்திர அக்கினி. சொரூபானந்தச்சுடர், s. An epithet of deity. See சொரூபம். 23)
