urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. o (p. 81) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To resemble, to equal, to be like, to match, நிகர்க்க. 2. v. n. To be fit, be suitable, to consist with, be adapted to, தகுதி யாயிருக்க. 3. To be equal, be parallel, alike, to match, to tally, correspond, சமமாயிருக்க. 4. To agree, consent to, allow, yield in argument, பொருந்த. ஒக்கும். It will agree, be proper, suitable, fit, like the same. ஒக்கும்வகையினால். By mutual agreement. (El. 291.) (p.) ஒத்தகுடிப்பிறந்தோர். Those born in families of equal rank that may inter-marry. எத்தால்வாழலாம்--ஒத்தால் வாழலாம். [vul.] How may we prosper? we may prosper by promoting concord. அதனோடொக்கும்--அதற்கொக்கும்--அதையொக் கும். It equals or is like that. விதியெனினும் விகாரமெனினுஞ்செயற்கையெனினு மொக்கும். In grammar, விதி, விகாரம் and செ யற்கை are synonymes. வில்லொக்கும்புருவம். Eye-brows resembling a bow. மக்களேபோல்வர்கயவரவரன்னவொப்பாரியாங்கண் டதில். The base among men are formed like others. We see no other two classes of beings that do so resemble each other. ஒக்க, inf. [used adverbially.] Together with, in company with, கூட. 2. Plentifully, bountifully, numerously. ஒக்கக்கிடக்கிறது. There is abundance. ஒக்கப்படித்தவர். One who has learned much--commonly in sarcasm. ஒக்கப்பிறந்தவர்கள். Children of the same mother. ஒக்கவில்லை. There is not much. ஊரொக்கக்கொள்ளைகொண்டுண்டவன்சுற்றம் போல் வேரொக்கக்கெடுமூலவியாதியே. The hemorrhoids will be as thoroughly extirpated (by this specific) as the posterity of one who plundered the whole village. ஒக்கப்போக, inf. To join in company with. ஒத்த, rel. part. Conformable, suitable, consistent, equal. அப்படிக்கொத்தது. Such. பிறரைவருத்துவதற்கொத்தபாவமில்லை. There is no sin equal to that of afflicting others. ஒத்தசனம்--ஒத்தசாதி, s. Tribes, confederate castes linked together, securing general resentment of an injury done to any member of the respective communities. ஒத்ததரை, s. Level ground. *ஐராணி, s. kiẕi (p. 111) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To part, to be slit, rent in shreds, or torn; to be parted --as land by ploughing, &c., துண்டாகக்கிழிய. 2. To part asunder, to separate, இரண்டாக க்கிழிய. 3. To be defeated, to be disappointed, to meet with ill success, to come to nothing, வாயாதுகெட. காரியங்கிழிந்துபோயிற்று--கிழிகிழிந்துபோயிற்று.... The affair is come to nothing. 2. He turns out to be nothing. அவர்கிழிந்தார். He is disconcerted; i.e. can do nothing. (Abusive.) கிழிந்துபோக, inf. To be rent or torn; to go in pieces. கிழிவு, v. noun. A rent, tear, laceration, கிழிதல். 2. Failure; incompetency, ill success, dwindling away, வாயாமை. (The word is sometimes synonymous with இழிவு.) கிழியல், v. noun. Tearing, கிழிவு. 2. s. Cock of a gun, துப்பாக்கியினோருறுப்பு. 5. The prop of an embankment, நீரையடைக்குமரம். 6. A wooden frame, for casks, &c., குதிரைமரம். 7. The sparrow, ஊர்க்குருவி. 8. The mango tree, மாமரம், குதிரை is employed to denote a mango tree, because its synonym, கொக்கு is a synonym of மாமரம். This is sometimes allowed in poetry. மண்குதிரையைநம்பியாற்றில்இறங்கலாமா? Can one mount a clay-horse and descend into a river? குதிரைக்கடிவாளம்--குதிரைவாய்க்கருவி, s. A bit; a bridle for a horse. குதிரைக்கல்லணை--குதிரைச்சேணம், s. Saddle for a horse. குதிரைக்கழுத்துவட்டவார், s. Harness or trace for a horse. (Rott.) குதிரைக்கௌசனை--கவிசனை, s. A horsecloth or caparison. குதிரைச்சம்மட்டி--குதிரைச்சவுக்கு, s. Hindu caste in the time of Menu. according to the சூடாமணிநிகண்டு was as follows 1. பிராமணர், Brahmans, the sacerdotal caste--reputed to have sprung from the face of the god Brahma; 2. சத்திரியர் or க்ஷத்திரியர், the royal or military caste--said to have sprung from his shoulders; 3. வைசியர், Vaisya caste as sprung from his thighs. This class is threefold; (a) கோவைசியர், herdsmen. (b) தனவைசியர், the mercantile caste including செட்டிகள். (c.) பூவைசியர், the agriculturalists embracing வேளாளர். 4. சூத்தி ரர், Sudra caste, embracing artificers and other servile tribes, supposed to have sprung from Brahma's feet. Of these eighteen are named, but the number is much greater. See குடிமை.--Note. 2. All the Tamil authorities, except the Nighandu, make the கோவைசியர் and பூவைசியர் including the வேளாளர் as the fourth or சூத் திரர் caste, and all inferior to these as சங்கர சாதி or mixed caste.--Note. 3. To expatiate or dwell upon the low parentage of another. சாதியைவிட, inf. To break caste. சாதிவருணாச்சிரமம், s. [com. சாதிவ ருணாச்சிரம்.] The caste, class, religious order, &c.,--Note. This word is sometimes used as synonymous with சாதியா சாரம். சாதிநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire.-Note. All the gems, metals, &c., are in like manner distinguished. சாதிக்குதிரை, s. taṟ (p. 230) [prop. தத்.] A Sanscrit prefix in Tamil, the த் being changed to ற் before க், ச், ப். தற்காலம், s. The exact precise time of an action or occurrence, the expected time, the given time being, நிகழ்காலம். 3. Coincidence in time, அக்காலம். 4. [astron.] A given time for which calculation is made.--Note. This word is often used synonymously with தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், which see. தற்காலகிரகநிலை, s. Planetary positions at a given time. 2. The horoscope at the moment of birth. (A term used in nativities.) தற்காலசுத்தபுடம், s. The true longitude or position of a planet at a fixed time. தற்காலமத்திமம், s. The mean longitude at a given time. தற்காலவிலை, s. The price at the time. தற்காலவிலைப்படிதருவேன். I will give as the price may be at the time. தற்காலிக்க, inf. [in astron.] To determine longitude, &c., for a given time, to make a reduction in the elements of calculation of the time given or sought. தற்சணம்--தச்சணம்--தட்சணம்--த க்ஷணம், s. The very moment, not a moment intervening, உடனே. 2. The present moment, அந்தக்ஷணம். தற்சம்ம, s. Words from the Sanscrit used in Tamil, or any of the other cognate languages, without change--as கமலம், the letters of which are the same in Sanscrit and Tamil, but சக்தி in Tamil, is சக்தி in Sanscrit. (சது.) தற்சமயம், s. The particular juncture, the exact moment required, அச்சமயம். 2. The best opportunity, a special season or juncture, உற்றசமயம். தற்பதம், s. Deity, கடவுள். PARI. பரிகரி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To take away, do away, to remove, expel, dispel, cancel, நீக்க. 2. To remedy, to repair, counteract, மாற்ற. 3. To cure, heal, குணமாக்க. 4. Modes of constructing verse of which eight are given; 1. ஆற்றுநீர்ப்பொருள்கோள், natural, as the nominative accompanied by its various attributes, adjuncts, &c., followed by its object, if any, and concluded by the verb; 2. மொழிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், construction, in which the nominative and verb are interchanged, with another nominative and verb; 3. நிரனிறைப்பொருள் கோள், when subjects, and attributes, or nominatives and their verbs, are given in distinct series, see நிரனிறை; 4. விற் பூண் or விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், when the nominative is at the beginning, and its verb at the end, or the contrary; 5. தரப்பிசைப்பொருள்கோள், when a noun or verb belongs alike to the preceding and following parts of a verse or sentence, see தாப்பிசை; 6. அளைமறிபாப்புப்பொ ருள்கோள், another kind of construction, see அளை; 7. கொண்டுகூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள், a construction which requires the words to be selected here and there; 8. அடிமறி மாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், a verse in which the lines of the stanza are interchangeable, see அடிமறிமாற்று. பொருள்விளங்கவைத்தல், v. noun. A festive, auspicious or joyous ceremony--as a marriage, putting on jewels; a temple-festival, on a girl's arrival at puberty, &c. மங்கலகீதம்--மங்கலப்பாட்டு, s. Auspicious chants, music, &c. மங்கலகௌசிகம்--மங்களகௌசிகம்-மங்களகௌசிகை, s. A tune, ஓரிராகம். (சது.) மங்கலச்சொல்--மங்கலமொழி, s. Auspicious words, in place of inauspicious terms, fancied to be lucky for speaker or hearer. 2. Language of congratulation, or benediction, ஆசிவசனம். 3. Auspicious terms, together with their synonyms, used for beginning a poem. They are twenty-two in number: 1. திரு, wealth, &c.; 2. யானை, an elephant; 3. தேர், a chariot; 4. பரி, a horse; 5. கடல், the sea; 6. மலை, a mountain; 7. மணி, a gem; 8. பூ, a flower; 9. புகழ், praise; 1. சீர், good state or condition; 11. மதி, the moon; 12. நீர், water; 13. எழுத்து, a letter, a writing; 14. பொன், gold; 15. ஆரணம், Vedas, the law; 16. சொல், a word; 17. புயல், cloud; 18. நிலம், earth; 19. கங்கை, the Ganges; 2. உலகம், the world; 21. பரிதி, the sun; 22. அமிழ்தம், nectar. Others give more. (சது.) மங்கலஸ்நானம்--மங்கலநானம், s. Bathing for an auspicious ceremony, as a marriage, a temple-festival, &c. மங்கலதினம்--மங்கலநாள், s. An auspicious day. மங்கலதூரியம்--மங்கலபேரிகை--மங் கலமுரசு--மங்கலவாத்தியம், s. Auspicious drums and other musical instruments. மங்கலநதி, s. A sacred river. மங்கலநாண், s. The marriage-badge, including the தாலி and its cord. மங்கலபத்திரிகை--மங்கலவோலை, s. A marriage-invitation. மங்கலபாடகர், s. Bards, encomiasts, panegyrists. மங்கலபுருஷன், s. A proper man to conduct a festival, or to communicate good tidings--as one married, not a widower, not deformed, one good tempered, prosperous, &c. மங்கலமங்கையர், s. [pl. com. கட்டுக்க ழுத்தியர்.] Women wearing the marriagebadge. மங்கலமுகூர்த்தம்--மங்கலவேளை, s. [com. முகூர்த்தவேளை.] An auspicious hour. மங்கலம்புரிய, inf. To be united in marriage. மங்கலவணி, s. Auspicious ornaments. மங்கலவழக்கு, s. Auspicious words, terms or usages. மங்கலவள்ளை, s. A poem on a female of noble birth, in nine வெண்பா, and nine வகுப்பு See பிரபந்தம். மங்கலவாரம், s. An auspicious day, commonly Monday or Wednesday, or any day on which there is a favorable configuration of the planets, நல்லநாள். 2. See மங்கலன். மங்கலவார்த்தை, s. Auspicious language, as சுபவசனம். 2. Good news. மங்கலவாழ்த்து, s. Salutation, benediction, praise, especially to a hero in the opening or concluding of a poem. மங்கலவினைஞர், s. A blind minstrel of the Chola country, who being favored by the Singalese king, obtained possession of Jaffoa, then uninhabited, and introduced there a colony of Tamil people. யாழ்ப்பாணர், s.
