aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. atiru (p. 11) --அதிர், கிறேன், அதிர்ந் தேன், வேன், அதிர, v. n. To shake, quake, as by an earthquake, he fall of a tree, or the rolling of chariots, கம்பிக்க. 2. To be startled, alarmed as by the sound of a cannon, the report of thieves, the prevalence of an epidemic, &c., thrill, நடுங்க. 3. To resound attended with a shock, as by thunder, by an earthquake; to sound as a drum, &c., reverberate, vibrate, roar as beasts, tinckle as bells or ornaments, ஆர வாரிக்க. பூமியதிரநடவாதபுண்ணியவான். A good man, one who is careful not to give offence. அதிர்குரல்முரசம். The loud sounding drum. பூமியதிரல், v. noun. An earthquake, trembling of the earth. அதிர், v. noun. Commotion, shaking, trembling, fear, நடுக்கம், 2. s. Sound, ஒலி. அதிர்வெடி--அதிர்வேட்டு, s. The explosion or report of small cannons, &c., to excite alarm. 2. (prov.) The cannon itself. அதிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Quaking, shaking, trembling as of the earth by an earthquake, thunder, or the fall of a tree &c., அசைவு. 2. Resonance, repercussion, concussion, reverberation, எதிரொலி. 3. Agitation, stir, நடுக்கம். 4. A great noise, a loud report, an explosion, பேரொலி. அதிர்ப்பு, v. noun. arcu (p. 23) --அரசமரம், s. A tree-the Ficus religiosa, Peepul, or poplarleaved fig-tree--forming one of the nine kinds of wood used in burnt offerings, ஓர்மரம். (See சமித்து.) Its seed is used for medicinal purposes. அரசாணிக்கால், s. A bough of this tree, which together with others from the கலியாணமுருக்கு, (or erythrina,) &c. is fixed between two of the interior posts of the marriage pandal, round which the parties pass, performing particular ceremonies. அரசிலை, s. The leaves of the அரசு. 2. The figure of a leaf as branded on beasts, &c., அரசிலைக்குறி. அரசிலைத்தூக்கம்--அரசிலைத்தொங் கல், s. Hangings, resembling the அரசு leaves. கொடியரசு, s. A different species of Ficus. பூவரசு, s. The portia tree, பூப் பரத்தி, Thespesia populnea, L. ஆற்றரசு, s. Another species of Ficus growing in the vicinity of rivers. 2)

aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

(காசிகரண்டம்.) அழிகட்டு, s. A fabrication either varbal or written to deprive another of his right, a forgery, (a law term), பொ ய்ச்சீட்டு. 2. An excuse, pretence, subterfuge, வீண்போக்கு. 3. Obstacle, impediment, hinderance, தடை. 4. Means used for counteracting magic, poison, &c. மாற்று. அழிச்சாட்டியம், s. Improper treatment, an unlawful or wicked proceeding. வாங்கின கடனைக்கொடாம லழிச்சாட்டியம் பண் ணிவருகிறான். He gives much trouble by delaying to pay the debt. அழிச்சாட்டியக்காரன், s. A turbulent fellow, a bully. அழிப்பு, v. noun. Destroying, ruining, wasting, consuming in an active sense, அழிக்கை. அழிப்பாளி, s. A spendthrift, squanderer, prodigal, profligate, ஊதாரி. 8)

uṇṭā (p. 59) கிறது, னது, கும், க, v. n. To come into existence, to rise into being, happen, occur, take place, become, to be formed, to form, to concrete, உளதாக. 2. To become, to be made or created, தோன்ற. 3. To be conceived, to have origin, கருவுண்டாக. 4. To grow as vegetables, thrive, flourish, to be produced, be productive, &c., முளைக்க. 5. To become rich, wealthy, opulent, to prosper, செல்வமுண்டாக; [ex உள்.] (c.) உண்டாயபோழ்தினுடைந்துழிக்காகம்போற்றொண் டாயிரவர்தொகுபவே. Thousands crowd about the wealthy as crows about a corpse. (நாலடி.) எனக்குண்டானவுடைமை. My property. உலகமுண்டானதுமுதல். From the creation of the world. பிள்ளையுண்டாயிருக்கிறவன். A pregnant woman. சதுரக்கள்ளியிலகிலுண்டாகும். In the prickly pear grows the (fragrant) agillochum. உண்டாயிருக்க, inf. To have, belong to, exist. அவள்நாலுமாதமுண்டாயிருக்கிறாள். She is advanced four months in pregnancy. உண்டானவன், appel. n. One who has wealth--as உள்ளவன். 120)

uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. To fabricate, make a false story, ஏற்படுத்த. வேதம்உண்டுபடுத்தியசீர்த்திவியாதமுனி. Vedaviasar renowned as the compiler of the Vedas. (திருச்.) உண்டுபண்ண, inf. To make, bring into existence. உண்டுபண்ணிவைக்க, inf. To make, to establish, render permanent. 2. To rear plants, &c. 3. To establish one in life. உண்டென, inf. To say it is. 2. [vul. adverbially.] Much, exceedingly, more, நிரம்ப. உண்டெனத்தரவேண்டும். Give me more, give me liberally. 125)

uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. (புறநானூறு.) 24)

urm (p. 64) s. Strength, firmness, hardness, compactness, coarseness, aspiration, force of voice, expression, meaning, &c., வலி. 2. Energy, spirit, exertion, determination, resolution, fortitude, firmness of mind, ஊக்கம். 3. (p.) The breast, chest, மார்பு. 4. Wisdom, knowledge, spiritual knowledge, ஞானம். 5. Velocity, force, missile or projectile force, வேகம். 6. The solid part of timber, வயிரம். 7. Hardness, induration, obduracy, திண்மை. 8. A surrounding wall, மதில். கடலுரமாயிருக்கிறது. The sea is high, rough. காற்றுரமாயிருக்கிறது. The wind is high, boisterous. உரகடல்--உரசமுத்திரம், s. A boisterous sea, a sea generally rough. உரங்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To pound and harden the earth around trees newly set, பலமுறச்செய்ய. உரங்கொள்ள, inf. To thrive, grow strong--as the wind; to get strength, become boisterous--as the sea, பலங்கொள்ள. 2. To exert strength, &c., வலியுண்டாக. 3. To be hardened, indurated, obdurate, கடினமுற. உரங்கொண்டெறிந்து. Throwing with force. காய்ச்சலுரங்கொண்டுகாய்கின்றது. The fever rages and burns. உரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To exert influence, take effect, produce, effect--as arguments, பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To grow strong, வலியுற. 3. To thrive--as vegetables, &c., பலப்பட. அவரெடுத்தகாரியங்களிலொன்றுமுரஞ்செய்யவில் லை. He has been successful in nothing that he has undertaken. உரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To animate, to encourage. உரமண், s. Hard, ungenial soil. உரமாய்நிற்க, inf. To stand fast, immovable. உரமாய்ப்பெய்கிறமழை, s. A heavy rain. உரமானசத்தம், s. A loud sound. உரமெடுக்க, inf. To remove a particular ailment incident to infants. உரம்போட, inf. To manure land, எருப்போட. 2. To fasten, make firm, உரப்பிக்க. உரம்விழ, inf. To get a particular ailment by rolling on the ground--applied only to a child not twelve months old. உராதரம், s. A woman's breast, முலை. உரேந்திரன், s. A hero, a soldier, வீரன். உரோருகம், s. A woman's breast, முலை; [ex உருகம், birth, origin.] கடலுரம், s. Roughness of the sea. உரக்க, inf. To become intense, grow strong, firm, hard, &c., to increase in strength, intenseness, loudness, &c., to rage, increase in violence, vehemence, heat, malignity, &c., பலமடைய. உரத்துப்படி. Read out. உரத்துப்பாடு. Sing loud; sing louder. காய்ச்சலுரத்துக்காய்கிறது. The fever rages intensely. உரக்கக்கூப்பிட, inf. To cry aloud. உரக்கப்பேச, inf. To speak loud. உரத்தகடல், s. A hot sun. உரப்பிக்க, inf. To make firm, to harden, indurate, confirm. உரப்பு, v. noun. intenseness, force, strength, firmness, compactness, வலி. 2. Coarseness, thickness, roughness--as of cloth, paper, leaves, &c.; stiffness, hardness--as of rice not well boiled, or of the stomach when overcharged, or when food does not digest, திண்மை. உரப்பானநிலம், s. Firm, hard (ungenial) land--as உரத்தநிலம். உரப்பானபுடைவை, s. Thick, coarse cloth. நெஞ்சுரப்பானவன், s. A hardhearted man. 2)

uẕai (p. 67) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [col. for உழத்து.] To earn, gain by labor, procure by industry, to acquire, வருந்தியீட்ட. 2. v. n. To labor hard, toil, strive, drudge, ply, வேலையிற்பிர யாசப்பட. 3. (p.) To sound--as talk, buzz, clamor, இரைய. 4. To suffer, endure hardships, to be afflicted, துன்பமுற. கல்வியிலேமிகவுமுழைக்கிறான். He is very diligent and successful in study. நானுழைத்தஉடைமையிலேதின்கிறேன். I live by my own earnings. உழைத்தபுண்ணியம், s. Acquired merit. உழைத்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To labor for nothing, or in vain. வயிற்றுக்குழைக்க, inf. To labor for one's maintenance. 2. To procure support by labor. உழைப்பு, v. noun. Hand-labor, toil, industry, diligence, பிரயாசம். 2. Earnings, gain, profit of labor, toil, or industry, thriving, thriftiness, வருந்தி யீட்டுகை. 3. Endeavors, exertions, energy, close application, முயற்சி. உழைப்பின்வாராவுறுதிகளுளவோகழப்பின்வாராக் கையறவுளவோ? Is there any good to be obtained without exertion? Is there any evil that may not arise from indolence? அவருக்கிலக்கணத்திலேநல்லவுழைப்பு. His application and success in the study of belles-lettres are great. உழைப்பாளி, s. An industrious, thrifty or laborious man, பிரயாசப்படுபவன். 29)

ūtāri (p. 69) s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, a squanderer, வீண்செலவுக்காரன். ஊதாரித்தனம், s. Prodigality, profligacy, வீண்செலவு. ஊதாரியாக, inf. To be extravagant. 55) *

aiym (p. 80) s. Doubt, hesitation, uncertainty, indecision, suspense, scepticism, terms or probability, possibility, and any thing short of positive certainty are included, சந்தேகம். 2. (p.) Alms, charity, பிச்சை. 3. A beggar's vessel or shell, இரப்போர்கலம். 4. Phlegm--one of the humors of the body, சிலேட்டுமம். 5. Doubt, surprise, &c.--as one of the துறை, அகப்பொருட்டுறையினொன்று-as, போதோவிசும்போபுனலோபணிகளது பதியோ யா தோவறிகுவதேதுமரிது, whether the place the damsel occupies is a lotus flower, the world of the gods, water, or the world of serpents, it is difficult to determine. ஐயம்புகினுஞ் செய்வினைசெய். Though you go abegging, perform your duties. (ஔ வை.) ஐயகணசூலை, s. An arthritic disease arising from phlegm and heat, ஆறுசூலையிலொன்று. ஐயக்காட்சி, s. An object of subject exciting doubt, indistinct perception, problematical or hypothetical terms, அதுவோவிதுவோவெனக்காண்கை. (See காட்சி.) 2. Doubt, சந்தேகம். ஐயக்காரன், s. A beggar, a mendicant, பிச்சைக்காரன். ஐயக்கிளவி, s. Terms or particles of doubt or uncertainty, commonly found in interrogative expressions, ஐய மொழி--such as ஆ, ஏ, ஓ, கொல், யா, &c. ஐயநாடி, s. One of the three states of the pulse--that in which the phlegmatic humor is supposed to be prevalent in the system, சிலேட்டுமநாடி. See நாடி. ஐயப்பட, inf. To doubt, hesitate. ஐயப்படாமை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from doubt and fear, certainty, undauntedness, சந்தேகங்கொள்ளாமை. 2. One of the eight அறத்துறுப்பு. See உறுப்பு. ஐயப்பாடு, s. Doubt, uncertainty, indecision, apprehension, suspense, சந் தேகம். ஐயமறுக்க, inf. One of the five kinds of questions which are proposed to remove doubt from the mind, சந்தேக நிவர்த்திசெய்ய. ஐயமிட, inf. To give alms, பிச் சையிட. ஐயமிட்டுண். Give alms before you eat. ஐயமுற, inf. To doubt, சந்தேகம டைய. ஐயமேலிட, inf. To be in a great doubt, சந்தேகமதிகரிக்க. 2. To have the rattles in the throat--as a dying person, சிலேட்டுமமேலிட. ஐயவணி, s. A figure in rhetoric-as where doubt is entertained as to whether a thing which bears analogy to another is identical with or distinct from it--as தாதளவிவண்டுதடுமாறுந்தாமரைகொ ல் மாதர்விழியுலவும் வாண்முகங்கொல். I doubt whether it is the face of a woman or a lotus flower, since it resembles so much the latter. ஐயவதிசயம், s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவிலக்கு, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயவும்மை, s. A particle showing uncertainty, doubt. See உம். ஐயவுவமை, s. A figure in rhetoric, ஓரலங்காரம். ஐயுற, inf.
