அகத்தியன்
akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. அகப்புறம்
akppuṟm (p. 2) s. Enjoyment in love on the part of one only, கைக்கிளையும் பெ ருந்திணையும். 2. Ten enjoyments treated of in the book called அகப்பொருள், viz., காந்தள், வள்ளி, சுரநடை, முதுபாலை, தாபதம், தபுதாரம், குற்றி சை, குறுங்கலி, இல்லாண்முல்லை, and பாசறை முல்லை. அகப்பொருள்
akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். அக்கினிபூ
akkiṉipū (p. 4) s. [ex அக்கினி et பூ blossom.] Skanda, who led the celestial armies against the Asuras. Siva having cast his seed into the flame for the purpose of generating a warrior able to subdue Daruka one of the chief Asuras, Skanda was produced. In the Skanda Purana, where his wars are described at large, his birth is given differently, அக்கினிசன்மன். 20)

A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The egg-shaped universe, முட்டை வடிவான அண்டம். 2. An astronomical treatise, ஓர்நூல். அண்டச்சுவர், s. Wall or shell of the mundane egg, அண்டபித்திகை. அண்டபகிரண்டம்--அண்டரண்ட பகிரண்டம், s. This world and the worlds beyond the mundane sphere; ex பஹி-பஹிஸ், outside. அண்டபிண்டம், s. The universe and the body; the latter is said to contain in embryo, or miniature, every thing found in the former. அண்டத்திலுள்ளதுபிண்டத்தில் உண்டு. What is in the world is also in the human body. அண்டமுகடு, s. The highest part or top of the imaginary shell that surrounds the solar system. அண்டயோனி, s. Giving for the sake of praise, or through fear, partiality, &c., which is of the lowest merit, as கடைப்படுதானம். அதமபட்சம், s. The lowest kind or class, lowest degree. அதமன், s. A mean, vile, abandoned man. அதமாங்கம், s. The foot, கால். அதமாதமன், s. The vilest of the vile, most worthless, the most abandoned. 20) *

atītam (p. 11) s. Exaltedness, pre-eminence, that which excels or goes beyond, எட்டாதது. 2. That which is beyond reach, exceeding the power of human comprehension, கடந்தது. 3. An attribute of the Deity, கடவுளதோர்தன்மை. (p.) மனோவாக்குக்கதீதமாக. In an incomprehensible and ineflable manner. அதீதப்பிரமம், s. The Deity as beyond human comprehension. அதீதர், s. The celestials, வானோர். 2. Ascetics, wise men who by their austerities have obtained great eminence, முனிவர். அதீதாவஸ்தை, s.
