tāy (p. 234) s. Mother, அன்னை. 2. Dam, female parent of animals in general, விலங்கின் தாய். 3. [in combination.] A maternal aunt, &c. (See சிறியதாய், சிறியதாய்முறை and பெரியதாய்.) 4. Origin, that which is primitive, chief, or principal, முதன்மை. (c.) தாய், is also applied to five kinds of nurses. 1. பாராட்டுத்தாய். 2. ஊட்டுந்தாய். 3. முலைத்தாய். 4. கைத்தாய். 5. செவிலித்தாய். which see. Another five-fold classification is given of persons held in similar esteem with mothers. 1. அரசன்தேவி, king's wife. 2. குருவின்தேவி, wife of the guru. 3. அண் ணன்தேவி, elder brother's wife. 4. தன்தே வியைஈன்றவள், wife's mother. 5. தன்னைஈன் றவள், one's own mother. தாய்ப்பொன்னிலும்மாப்பொன்எடுக்கிறவன். He who would steal one-twentieth even of his mother's gold--a maxim on the thievishness of goldsmiths. தாய்முகங்காணாதபிள்ளை. A child early bereaved of its mother. தாய்முலைப்பாலிலும்உப்புப்பார்க்கிறவன். One who tries even his mother's milk to see if it is not salt; i. e. a distrustful, mistrustful, sceptical person. தாய்சொற்சிறந்தவாசகமில்லை. No word is like that of a mother. (Avv.) தாயினும்அன்பர்கர்த்தர். The Divine Being more loving than a mother. (Christ. usage.) தாய்க்குள்ளதுமகளுக்கு. As the mother, so the daughter. தாயாடு, s. A dam. தாயேடு--தாயோலை, s. If water be beaten it will not divide; i. e. relations, though offended with each other, will reunite. நீர்முகத்தழுக்கில்லை. Water strained from cold rice kept over night for breakfast. நிராசனம்--நீராஞ்சனம், s. [also நிராஞ் சனம்.] Holding a lighted wick in water in which turmeric and lime are dissolved, and margosa leaves placed; and waving it round the idol, ஓர்ஆலாத்தி. 2. Waving lighted, sacrificial grass around ghee, and casting it into the sacred fire; (some give other definitions), சுத்திக ரிக்குமோர்சடங்கு. நீராடல், v. noun. Bathing, playing in water, ஸ்தானஞ்செய்தல். 2. A ripening cocoa-nut in which the water sounds when shaken; also நீராடற்றேங்காய். 3. One of the ten parts of juvenile poetry of the female class. See பிள்ளைத்தமிழ். நீராடற்பதம், s. That stage in the ripening of a cocoa-nut in which when shaken the water sounds. நீராட்ட, inf. To bathe another, bathe an idol, a beast, a corpse, &c., ஸ்நானஞ் செய்விக்க. நீராணிக்கன், s. One who takes care of the sluice of a public tank; used in the Congu country. நீராமைக்கட்டு, s.
