A present, a gift, உபகாரம். உபயகுலம், s. Two castes, two tribes, one born of two castes. உபயகுலசுத்தம், s. Purity in both the ancestral lines. உபயகோமுகி, s. A cow in the act of calving, the donation of which to a Brahman, when the moon is south of the equator, is regarded as very meritorious (lit.) two-faced, or looking both ways, கன்றின்றலையுதயமாய்நிற்கும்பசு. உபயாத்தம்--உபயார்த்தம், s. Double meaning, ambiguity in words or language, இருபொருள். Wils. p. 162. UBHAYARTHAM. உபயமாதம், s. [in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. An imitative, reiterated sound--as மடமடெனக்குடிக்கி றான், he drinks with a gurgling sound. 20) *

uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. The pencil which has imbibed blue paint. (நன்னூலுரை.) கள்ளுண்ணி, s. A drunkard. தள்ளுண்ண, inf. To be rejected. வீண்சோறுண்ணி, s. A rice consumer, a worthless person. உண்டல். A past verbal form of உண்ணல், eating. 119)

uḷru (p. 67) --உளர், கிறேன், உளர்ந்தேன், வேன், உளர, v. a. To adjust or clean feathers with the beak--as birds, சிறகுகோத. 2. To shake the wings and feathers, சிறகுதற. 3. To shake off, scatter, sprinkle, strew, சிந்த. (நிகண்டு.) 4. To try, tune, or play on a lute, &c., with the fingers, யாழினரம்புதடவ. (p.) 5. v. n. To whirl about, whiffle--as wind, காற் றுளர. 6. [prov.] To turn about or be loose --as a pin, or screw, சுழல. 7. [vul.] To stir, move either bodily or mentally, அசைய. நரம்புளர்ந்தமுதமூறுமங்கையர்பாடல். The singing of the damsels who sweetly played on the lute-- (நைட.) இவ்வளவுசொல்லியுஞ்சற்றுமுளருகிறானில்லை.... Though I have said so much, he is not yet moved. சிறையுளர்ந்தயல்சூழ். (Birds) that flock in the neighborhood adjusting their feathers with the beak-உளர்ச்சி, v. noun. Whirling, சுழற்சி. உளர்வு, v. noun. Whirling, whiffling, moving, stirring, turning, being loose, சுழற்சி. 2. Fluctuation, wavering, உளர்கை. 36)

urai (p. 65) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. [vul. உரைஞ்சு.] To be rubbed into a powder or paste, to wear away by attrition, to be indented, or effaced by rubbing, தேய. காரியமெல்லாமுரைந்துபோயிற்று. The whole affair has proved abortive, it has come to nothing. உரை, v. noun. Rubbing, friction, attrition, தேய்வு. 2. Touch of gold, or silver on the stone, assay, மாற்றறியுமுரை. 3. Gold for touching, பொன். உரைநயம், s. Superiority of gold or silver shown by the touch. உரையறிகருவி, s. A touch-stone, உரையாணி. 2. A touch-needle, மாற்றறிவிக் குமாணி. உரையாணி, s. A touch-needle. உரையுண்ண, inf. To be rubbed. உரைதல்--உரையல்--உரைவு, v. noun. Rubbing, உரிஞ்சுகை. 2. Waste by rubbing, friction, &c., தேய்வு. 59)

uti (p. 60) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To rise--as the sun, moon, &c., உதயமாக. 2. To be born--as a good or great personage, to be born, (spoken auspiciously, sometimes of common persons) பிறக்க. 3. To become incarnate--as a deity, to assume a form, அவதரிக்க. 4. To spring, arise, come into existence, grow out of, (தீ. 55.) to originate, become formed or developed, to have origin--as a book, science, &c., to arise--as primitive elements one out of another; to become evolved--as the world, &c., தோன்ற. 5. To commence--as a new period of time whether age, year, a month or otherwise, காலந்தொடங்க. 6. To swell, increase in size, பருக்க. நானுடனேயங்கேவந்துதிப்பேன். I will be in your company immediately. உலகமுதித்துதித்தொடுங்கும். The worlds appear and disappear again and again, (emanating from and being resolved into their primitive elements). கிணற்றிலேதண்ணீருதித்தது. The water has sprung up in the (new) well--an auspicious word. மனதிலுதித்தநினைவு. The thoughts that arose in the mind. 14) *
