koṭu (p. 146) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To give, grant, afford, bestow, present, ஈய. 2. In combination, to issue--as commands; கட்டளையளிக்க; to communicate, impart--as knowledge, அறிவிக்க; to supply, give aid, உத விசெய்ய; to stay with the hand, or give support, முட்டுக்கொடுக்க; to create, give existence--as the Supreme Being, சிருட் டிக்க; to give place, to yield, இடங்கொடுக்க. Note.-- This word is generally used in its direct meanings of give, &c., only when there is a receiver, so as to correspond with வாங்க. It is therefore, except as to the elephant, incorrectly, though commonly, used in reference to the lower animals, Strictly also it implies the giving of a superior, to an inferior; but these distinctions are little noticed. When combined with the gerund of another verb or with a noun, the meaning is often modified--as சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க, to instruct, to teach; காட்டிக்கொடுக்க, to betray; முதுகு கொடுக்க, புறங்கொடுக்க, பின்கொடுக்க, to turn the back, to flee. கொடுப்பதொழியேல். Cease not to give [the poor.] கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல், v. noun. Dealing, bargaining. 2. Lending, borrowing, &c. அவனுக்குமெனக்குங்கொடுக்கல்வாங்கலுண்டு.... He and I have business transactions together. கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல்பண்ண, inf. To deal, bargain, barter; to lend and barrow. கொடுக்குமதி, s. [prov.] What is due to one, a debt. கொடாமை, v. noun. Not giving, withholding. கொடான். He will not give. கொடுத்துக்காட்ட, inf. To give and thus unintentionally encourage further application. கொடுத்துக்காட்டினால்விடார்கள். If you give way and encourage them, they will not let you be quiet. கற்றுக்கொடுக்க, inf. [loc.] To teach. சாகக்கொடுக்க, inf. To lose by death-as a mother her child, &c. புருஷனையுமகனையுஞ்சாகக்கொடுத்தேன்..... I have given my husband and son to death--lost them by death. நிறங்கொடுக்க, inf. To tinge, give a color. 2. To be sleek, smooth, plump-as a person in health. பால்பழங்கொடுக்க, inf. To present milk and peeled plantain--as the bride, to the bridegroom; the first food supplied to him. பெண்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a girl in marriage. முடித்துக்கொடுக்க, inf. To finish and give to another. 2. To marry; to give in marriage. வாங்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To take and give, that is, buy for another. கொடுப்பன--கொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Giving in marriage, கொள்வனை is receiving or marrying. எங்களுக்குமவர்களுக்குங் கொள்வினைகொடுப்பினை யில்லை. We do not intermarry. 6)

caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. See also கிராமச்சா--மூலச்சா, the sine; and கோடி ச்சா, the cosine. 4) *

cummā (p. 194) adv. Leisurely, uselessly, lazily, idly, தொழிற்படாமையாய். 2. Separately, வா ளா. 3. Gratuitously, இலவசமாய். 4. Jocosely, &c., பொருணோக்கின்றி. 5. Silently, taciturnly, மௌனமாய். 6. Freely, unhesitatingly, unceremoniously, உபசாரமின்றி. 7. Causelessly, vaguely, unintentionally, முகாந்தரமி ன்றி. 8. Merely, simply, இயல்பாய். 8. Over and above; continuously, repeatedly, ஒழி வின்றி. இப்போது நான்சும்மப இருக்கிறேன். I am at present without any employment. சும்மாகிடைக்குமாசோணாசலன்பாதம். Can the feet of the High be approached without pains? சத்தியம்பண்ணிச்சொன்னானோசும்மாசொன்னானோ. Did he speak on oath, or vaguely? சும்மாகிட. Hold your peace. சும்மாவந்தேன். I came having no particular business. போய்ச்சும்மாவந்தான். He went and returned without success. சும்மாவருகிறான். He comes here very often. அவனைச்சும்மாவிடுவேனா. Will I let him go unpunished? அவனைச்சும்மாவிடு. Let him alone. சும்மாசொல்லு. Tell it without fear. சும்மாவாயைத்திற. Just open your mouth. சும்மாகொடுக்க--சும்மாதர, inf. To give gratis. சும்மாசொல்ல, inf. To say a thing for pastime, to speak in jest. சும்மாஇருக்க, inf. To be at leisure, be idle. 2. To be still, to leave off. 70)

piṭi (p. 314) s. Handle, haft, hilt, catch ஆயு தப்பிடி. (c.) 2. A female elephant, பெண் யானை. 3. A she-camel, பெண்ணொட்டகம். 4. A female Yak, bosgrunniens, பெண்க வரி. (சது.) 5. (c.) A hold, gripe, clutch, pinch, seizure by the hand, பற்று. 6. Firm grasp of the mind, comprehension, கிரகிப்பு. 7. (fig.) Confidence, reliance, trust, நம்பிக் கை. 8. Help, power, refuge, support, உதவி. 9. Religious belief, opinion or tenet, மதக் கொள்கை. 1. A fist, a closed hand, கை முஷ்டி. 11. A handful with the hand closed, a small quantity, பிடியளவு. பிடிகாசு, s. [prov.] A small sum kept back by a purchaser as auspicious. பிடிகாரன், s. [prov.] A fisherman by occupation மீன்பிடிக்கிறவன். பிடிகொடுக்க, inf. To suffer one's self to be taken. 2. To give a handle. 3. To speak or act so as to commit one's self, to divulge one's affairs unintentionally. பிடிகொடாதபேச்சு, Talk of which the meaning cannot be made out. 2. Abuse or irony in terms not to be taken hold of for prosecution. பிடிக்கட்டு, s. A little bundle especially of palm-leaves, tied up. பிடிக்கொழுக்கட்டை, s. A kind of கொழுக்கட்டை pastry. பிடிசுட்டுப்படைக்க, inf. [prov.] To bake little cakes and offer them to the household gods. பிடிதண்டம், s. Unjust seizure of a person. See தண்டம். பிடிநெல்லு, s. A handful of paddy, taken from each marcal by the servants at the public store, as their perquisite for measuring. பிடிநெல்லுக்கிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To take the handful of paddy for measuring. பிடிபிடியென்றுநிற்க, inf. [fig.] To hasten a business. பிடிபோட, inf. To put a handle to any implement. பிடிப்பிச்சை, s. A handful of rice given by a house-wife to the Brahmans, or other religious mendicants. பிடிப்பிட்டு, s. A small kind of confectionary, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. பிடிமண், s. A handful of sand. நானுன்வாயிற்பிடிமண்போடுகிறேன். I put a handful of sand in your mouth-spoken in anger. பிடியரிசி, s. Handfuls of rice taken from the daily allowance, for charity. பிடியாள், s. A person seized or taken into custody. 2. As அமஞ்சியாள். பிடியெழுத்தாணி, s. A style in a handle, usually folding and with a knife. பிடிமானம், s. Affection, attachment, fondness, favoritism, அன்பு. 2. Relish, zest; a liking, பிரியம். 3. Acquisition, money amassed, தேட்டம். 4. Frugality, sparingness, parsimony, உலோபம். Rigidness, bigotry, pertinacity, perseverance, உறுதி. பிடிமானமில்லாமற்செலவுசெய்கிறான். He expends profusely. பிடியன், appel. n. [vul.] A pot that will hold any given quantity. 2. s. A female elephant, as பிடி. பிடிவாதம், s. Stubbornness, contumacy, pertinacity, perverseness, முரண்டு. 2. Firm determination--as of an enthusiast who tortures himself till the god complies with is request; persistence, strenuousness, விடாநிலை. 3. Unyieldingness, spitefulness, வைராக்கியம். பிடிவாதக்காரன், s. An obstinate, selfwilled person. பிடிவாதி, appel. n. As பிடிவாதக்காரன். பிடிவிட, inf. To let go one's hold or grasp. 2.
