(Their deeds) will be manifest in their posterity; i. e. in the prosperity, or adversity of their offspring. எச்சமிட, inf. To discharge excrement--as birds, &c., பறவைமலம்விசர்ச் சிக்க. பகையெச்சம். s. Suppressed anger. தீயெச்சம், s. The remainder of fire--as, வினைபகையென்றிரண்டினெச்சம், நினை யுங்காற்றீயெச்சம்போலத்தெறும், (Warlike) deeds which are not pushed to extremity (in the destruction of a foe) and hatred which is not executed but suppressed, will destroy like fire unextinguished. (குறள்.) நோயெச்சம், s. A reduced disease, the remains of a disease. ஈரெச்சம், s. In Grammar, the two classes of unfinished words. I. பெயரெச் சம் or participles, lit. words which require nouns to complete them. These embrace two classes, viz.: (1.) தெரிநிலை ப்பெயரெச்சம், or the participle of the common verb--as, வந்தமகன், the man who came; வருகின்றமகன், the man who comes; வரும்பிள்ளை, the child that will come. (2.) குறிப்புப்பெயரெச்சம் or பெயரெச்சக்குறிப்பு, the participle of the symbolic verb, which always ends in அ and often has the force of an adjective--as கரியகுதிரை, a black horse; கடுங்கண்ணகுதிரை, a fierceeyed horse, or a fierce horse; பொன்னகு திரை. a gold-like horse; அமர்முகத்தகுதிரை, a horse in the front of a battle; மூவிலைய வேல், a three-forked dart, a trident. II. வினையெச்சம், unfinished verbs, or such forms of the verb as require other terminate verbs, &c., to complete the sense. (1.) தெரிநிலைவினையெச்சம். In the past, it is called by Beschi, a gerund; there are five varieties; i. e. (1.) செய்து, பண்ணி, நிறீஇ for நிறுவி or நிறுத்தி; வளைஇ for வளைந்து or வளைத்து; இரீஇ for இருந்து or இருத்தி; கூய் for கூவி. (2.) செய்பு. (3.) செய்யா. (4.) செய்யூ. (5.) செய்தென--Notes. The first is the most common, and the only kind found in colloquial use. 2. The present, or infinitive, செய or செய்ய. 3. The future comprising six varieties. 1. செயின், செய்யின், செயில், செய்யில், செய்கில், these are all future subjunctive forms. 2. செய்யிய. 3. செய்யியர். 4. செய்வான். 5. செய்பாக்கு. 6. உண்பான், this termination occurs after a nasal only. The last five are equivalent to the infinitive, &c., they may be rendered by that with the potential of the verb, as given in நன்னூல். A few may be added: 1. செய் தால், the common subjunctive of the past, but often used for the future. 2. செய்தக்கால். 3. செய்தக்கடை, past or future subjunctives. 4. செய்தலும், காண்டலும். 5. செய்தலோடும், implying when, or as soon as. 6. ஏல், a contraction of எனில், is, in poetry, added to any finite verb to form the subjunctive--as உண்ணுமேல், உண்ணுமெனில். 2. வினையெச்சக்குறிப்பு or குறிப்புவினையெச்சம், gerund of symbolic verbs; of these there are but two, இன்றி and அன்றி from இல் and அல், these symbolic verbs being redundant. சொல்லெச் சம், elliptical, or incomplete words, or classes, ten in number. 1. பெயரெச்சம், participles as given above. 2. வினையெச் சம், unfinished forms of the verb. (See above.) 3. உம்மையெச்சம், a sentence in which a second உம் and its adjunct are understood--as, சாத்தனும்வந்தான், Sattan also is come, implying that others are come or expected. 4. சொல்லெச்சம், a clause in which சொல்லல் is understood --as, என்றார் for என்றுசொன்னார். 5. பிரிநிலை யெச்சம், a clause in which an exception of persons, or things is implied, see ஏ and ஓ--as, அவனேகொண்டான், he bought it, implying that others did not. 6. எனவெனெச்சம், a clause in which a verb, or a noun is required after என--as, கடலொல்லெனவொலித்தது, the sea roared with the sound of ஒல். 7. ஒழியிசையெச்சம், a clause in which a counterpart is understood--as உண்ணுதற்கோவந்தான், was it to eat that he came (implying that his object was otherwise)? 8. எதிர்மறை யெச்சம், the ellipsis of a negative, or denial--as அவனோகொண்டான், Was it he that bought it (implying a negative answer). 9. இசையெச்சம், ellipsis generally comprising two or more words, such as are not found in the above--as நின்னையா னகன்றாற்றுவனோ, Can I endure separation from you (indicating an affectionate attachment to the party addressed)? 1. குறிப்பெச்சம், symbolic terms, contractions, abbreviations, &c., comprising several kinds. (See குறிப்பு.) There is another form called முற்றெச்சம், a finite verb used in the place of a gerund--as உண்டான்வந்தான் for உண்டுவந்தான், eating he came. எச்சமிட, inf. To befoul, to soil with dung--spoken of birds. எச்சவனுமானம், s. Inference of a past cause from a present effect. See அநுமானம். எச்சவாய், s. [vul.] The sphincter of the anus, the podex, குதம். அட்டவெச்சம், s. The eight defects in the human body; i. e. 1. சிதடு or குருடு, blindness. 2. ஊமை, dumbness. 3. செவிடு, deafness. 4. கூன், crookedness of the back. 5. குறள், dwarfness. 6. முடம், lameness. (சது.) (in பிங்கலந்தை and திவாகரம், யகண், மா, hermaphroditism). 7. உறுப்புமயக்கம், a monstrous birth either by redundancy, defect, or misplacing of the members, &c. 8. உறுப்பில்பிண்டம், a shapeless production, or a birth with the features not properly developed. 23)

Minister and attendant of yama, காலன். 19. A turn, time--as ஒருக்கால், once; இருக்கால், twice. 2. Wind, air, any of the vital airs, காற்று. 21. Power, strength, வலிமை, (பிங்.) 22. Darkness, gloom, இருள். (நிக.) 23. A son, மகன். 24. A peg, a pin, குறுந்தறி. 25. [prov.] A measure in the width of cloth, being two குஞ்சம் or two-hundred-and-forty threads of warp, புடைவை அகலத்தின்கால். காலடி, s. The sole of the foot, உள் ளங்கால். 2. The steps or trace of the foot, foot-steps, காற்சுவடு. காலடியிலே, At or near the foot. காலணி, s. Ankle-ornaments, anklerings or bells, காலிலணியுமாபரணம். காலதர், s. (p.) A window, பலகணி; [ex கால், wind, et அதர், way.] காலாட, inf. To be active and industrious, முயல. காலாடி, s. An active, industries man, one who is active in movements, affairs, &c., முயற்சியுடையோன். 2. Wanderer, திரி வோன். 3. Title given to the chief of the Paller caste, பள்ளர்தலைவன். காலாட்டம், s. Activity in business, in duty, and consequent properity, மு யற்சி. காலாட்டமுள்ளமாடு, s. An ox that is brisk and ploughs well. காலாணி, s. A corn on the foot. 2. Pegs in the beams of native houses to support the roof. காலாணியற்றுப்போனவன், s. One who is become weak or poor. காலாயுதம், s. A gallinacious fowl, whose foot is its weapon, கோழி. காலாழி, s. See under ஆழி. காலாள், s. A person on foot; footsoldiers, infantry, பதாதி. காலாற, inf. To rest the foot, நடை யோய்ந்திருக்க. காலாறவிட, inf. To let draught oxen, horses, &c., rest. காலிடற--கால்தடக்க--காறடக்க, inf. To stumble. காலிலி, s. A snake, பாம்பு. 2. Wind, காற்று. 3. The charioteer of the sun, அருணன்; [ex கால், leg, இல், not without legs.] காலில்விழ, inf. To fall prostrate, or do homage at one's feet. காலுழற்சிகையுழற்சி. Distortion of the limbs, by convulsion or otherwise. காலிறால், s. See under இறால். காலுளைவு, v. noun. Soreness, aching or pain in the legs, from cold, walking, &c. காலூன்ற, inf. To set on foot firm on the ground; to become established. காலூன்றிநிற்க, inf. To stand firmly, stand fast. காலூன்றிப்பெய்ய, inf. To rain in torrents--the clouds seeming to rest on the horizon. காலேயரைக்கால், s. A quarter and oneeighth, five-eighths. காலோடேகால்சேர்ந்துநிற்க, inf. To stand with closed legs. கால்கட்டு, s. Inseparableness--as of wife and husband. கால்கட்டுகைகட்டு, Bound hand and foot. 2. (fig.) Confined at home by the sickness of another, by a grown-up daughter, a motherless child, or by urgent business, &c. கால்கழுவ, inf. To wash the feet; metaphorically to clean one's self with water after stool, மலங்கழுவ. கால்கூசுதல், v. noun. Shrinking of the foot in touching rough ground, &c. 2. Recoiling of the legs in stepping into the compound or house of a stranger. 3. Having spasms in the arms, and legs --as in cholera. கால்சீக்க, inf. To root out, exterminate, வேரோடுகளைய. 2. To efface, to obliterate, துடைக்க. 3. To dispel darkness, இருளைஅகற்ற. 4. To scrape with the foot, காலினாற்சீக்க. கால்செய்வட்டம், s. A fan, விசிறி; [ex கால், air, et செய்வட்டம்.] கால்தளர--காறளர inf. To become weak in the limps, by walking, sickness, age, &c. கால்தோல்--காற்றோல் s. [prov.] Leathern defences for toddy-drawers feet in climbing, மரமேறுவோர் காலிலிடுந்தோல். கால்நகம்--கானகம் s. Toe-nail. கால்நடை--கானடை. v. noun. Walking, going on foot--as distinct from riding and driving. 2. s. Sheep and goats; oxen, cattle, ஆடுமாடுகள் அவனுக்குமாட்டில் நூறுகால்நடையுண்டு. He has no-hundred oxen. கால்நடையாய், adv. On foot, a-foot. கால்நடையாய்ப் பிரயாணம்போக, inf. To travel on foot. கால்நோக்கு--கானோக்கு s. One-fourth aspect of a planet, being one of the four aspects. கால்பாவவில்லை. The feet do not seek the ground--recoiling from going. கால்பிடிக்க, inf. To fall at one's feet to ask a favor. 2. To press and rub the legs in order to induce sleep, to shampoo. கால்பின்னிக்கொண்டுநிற்க, inf. To stand cross-legged. கால்பின்னிக்கொள்ள--காலோடேகால் பின்னிக்கொள்ள, inf. To lose the power of walking, legs being crossed. கால்மட்டம், s. [prov.] Use of the feet in walking, by guess or practice--as in the dark or as a blind man. கால்மாடு, s. The foot of a bed, or of a person in bed, காற்பக்கம். கால்மிதி, s. Step in dancing. 2. Footmark, காற்சுவடு. கால்வருட, inf. To shampoo, to stroke the feet, soles, &c. கால்வழி, s. Lineal descent, succession, சந்ததி. 2. Foot-path. கால்வாங்க, inf. To make the leg, foot or tail of a letter--as of கு-து-ர். 2. To slip, to slide in muddy walking. 3. To die. 4. To trip one up, to disappoint, to frustrate one's object. 5. To amputate a foot, a leg, &c. 6. To be drawn up, stiffened, &c.--as a leg by a fall, convulsions, &c. கால்வாசி, s. A fourth part. வேலைகால்வாசிதீர்ந்தது. The fourth part of the work is finished. கால்வாய், s. A channel, a water-course, an aqueduct--commonly வாய்க்கால். கால்விரல், s. A toe. கால்விலங்கு, s. Fetters, காற்றளை. கால்விழுந்துபோக, inf. To be weary of walking. 2. To become paralyzed --as the legs. கால்வைக்க, inf. To step, tread or trample on. 2. To step in dancing. 3. (fig.) To enter upon a practice, a course, &c.; to make a footing. 4. To intermix by marriage. காற்கொட்்டை, s. A small bolster for the legs and feet. காற்சங்கிலி, s. Chains for the feet. காற்சட்டை, s. Trowsers, pantaloons. காற்சரி, s. Foot-ring, a kind of ornament for the feet. காற்சிலம்பு, s. A foot-trinket of silver. காற்சீப்பு, s. The hip-bone, சந்தெலும்பு. காற்படம், s. The fore part of the sole or bottom of the foot, காலின்படம். காற்படி, s. A quarter measure. காற்பரடு, s. The ankles--as கரடு. காற்பிடிப்பு, s. Rheumatic stiffness, contraction, &c., in the legs. காற்றண்டை, s. A tinkling trinket for the ankles. கானடுவிரல், s. The middle toe of the foot. கானொண்டி--கால்நொண்டி s. Lameness of the leg. 2. A lame man. கடைகால், s. The foundation, அஸ்திவா ரம். 2. An excavation for laying the foundation. 3. [prov.] A small iron bucket for drawing water. கிந்துகால், s. A halting or hobbling leg. கிந்துகாலன், s. A hobbler. கீற்றரைக்கால், The contracted form of உ, marked thus ,-- as து, நு. கீற்றுக்கால், The contracted form of ஊ, marked thus --as தூ, நூ.
