aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

koṇṭi (p. 146) s. [local.] The corner pin for a hinge of a native door--as கொண்டை, கத வுக்குடுமி. 2. Pillage, plunder, ravage--as கொள்ளை. கொண்டியாய்த்திரிகிறான். He is sauntering about. கொண்டிக்கதவு, s. A door that turns with a pin at the upper corner. கொண்டிமாடு, s. A thievish, stray cow or bullock. கொண்டிமேய, inf. To graze thievishly where not allowed. கொண்டிப்பணம், s. The fine imposed for கொண்டிமேய்தல். 51)

cuḷi (p. 198) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. and v. a. To be angry, express anger by the features, words, &c., கோபக்குறிகாட்ட, (c.) அவன் முகஞ் சுளித்துக்கொண்டு திரிகிறான். He is roaming about discontented; (lit.) twisting his face. சுளிக்கச்சொல்லேல். Speak not offensive words. (Auv.) சுளிப்பு, v. noun. As சுளிவு, which see. 73)

cuvēccai (p. 198) --சுயேச்சை, s. Self-will, following one's own purpose or inclination, free choice, free will, free-agency, தன்னிச்சை; [ex சுவ, et இச்சை.] நீ சுயேச்சையாய்ச்சொல்லுகிறாயா யாருஞ்சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார்களா. Do you say this of yourself or were you told by any body? சுயேச்சையாய்த்திரிகிறான். He acts according to his own will. 35) *

tāngku (p. 232) கிறேன், தாங்கினேன், வேன், தாங்க, v. n. To bear up, to support, தாபரிக்க. 2. To endure, to sustain, சகிக்க. 3. To press heavily, அழுத்த. 4. To ward off, to avert, விலக்க. 5. To carry, சுமக்க. 6. To maintain, sustain by food, ஆதரிக்க. 7. To protect, to guard, காக்க. 8. To pole a boat, தோணி தள்ள. 9. To treat tenderly. with great kindness as a child or a friend, பராமரிக்க. 1. To solicit cringingly, கெஞ்ச. 11. To press against to strike, to graze a boil so as to cause pain, ஊன்ற. 12. To assist one in rising, in raising or carrying a burden, or climbing a tree, தூக்க. 16. To bear with a light hand, as when beating, ploughing, &c., கைதாங்க. 17. To halt in speaking or walking, நிறுத்த. (c.) இந்தப்போசனம்சீவனத்துக்குத்தாங்காது. This food will not support life. காற்றுக்குத்தாங்காது. It will not bear the wind. என்னாலேஅவ்வளவுகொடுக்கத்தாங்காது. I cannot afford to give so much. அவன்அடிதாங்குவான். He can endure blows. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடுகொடுத்துத்தாங்காது. No one can afford to feed him. காலைத்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The animal limps in walking. அவனையேதாங்கிக்கொண்டுதிரிகிறான். He pleases him, to gain his own purpose. அவன்கையைத்தாங்கு. Ward off his hand, his blow, &c. மறுமொழிச்சொல்லித்தாங்காது. There is no end of answering such questions. [prov.] சரீரந்தாங்காது. The constitution will not hear it. தாங்கித்தாங்கிப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks haltingly. மாடுகால்தாங்கித்தாங்கிவைக்கிறது. The bullock hobbles (by pain in the hoof). தாங்கத்தாங்கத்தலையிலேற. To become the more arrogant, the more kindness is shown. 2. To be supercilious on account of humble applications. மலையைமலைதாங்கவேண்டும்மண்ணாங்கட்டிதாங்கு மா. One moutain supports another, can a clod of earth do it? விஞ்சையிற்றாங்கினன் சடையன் வெண்ணெய்யிற் தஞ்சமென்றோர்களைத்தாங்குந்தன்மைபோல். (Nalan) upheld, by charms (the mountain), as Sadaiyan of Truvennainallur supported those who came to him for refuge. (இராமா.) தாங்கமாட்டான். One unable to endure. தாங்குகோல், s. [prov.] A boat-men's pole, தோணிதாங்குகோல். தாங்கிக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To bear in mind, to brook. 2. To sustain sickness, adversity, &c. தாங்கிக்கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry in the arms. 2. To receive and treat very civilly or politely. 3. To escort or conduct, as a lady by the arm. 4. To solicit very urgently. தாங்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To bear. 2. To ward off, to screen, &c. 3. nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [probably a change of நானாவிதம்.] Various kinds, varieties, sundry modes, &c. நாலுபேருமறிய--நாலுபேர்அறிய, inf. (adverbially) Publicly, before all, generaly or universally known. நால்வகைத்தோற்றம், s. muylu (p. 357) --முயல், கிறேன், முயன்றேன், வேன், முயல, v. n. To practise, to persevere, to become used to, to make continued exertion, முயச்சிசெய்ய. 2. To begin, to undertake, தொடங்க. புண்ணியத்தில்முயல்கின்றான். He is persevering in works of charity. நான்அதைச்செய்யமுயன்றிருக்கிறேன். I have just begun to do it. முயல்வார், appel. n. Marriage contract with the daughter of a mother's brother is lawful. அக்காளைக்கொண்டால்தங்கைக்குமுறைகேட்கவேண் டுமா. Is it necessary to inquire whether it is lawful to marry a younger sister when you have married the elder? இதுனக்குமுறையல்ல. This does not become you. இன்றைக்குஎன்முறை. It is my turn to-day. அறமுறையிடுதல், v. noun. Complaining grievously. திருமுறை, s. A name given by Saivas to a book of Manikavasakar; (lit.) the sacred complaint. முறைகாரர், s. Arrangement of a series of verbs, nouns, &c., in the order of their nominatives and objectives, as-இரணியநாட்டனிரணியனீரைந்தலையன்கஞ்சன் முரணியகோட்டினகத்திற்சரத்தின்மூன்றாயிற்றுஞ்சத் தரணியிற்குத்தியிடந்தெய்துதைத்தவன்சர்ப்பவெற்பன் அரணியகேழலரிராகவன்கண்ணனாகிவந்தே.....The god of Tirupati is he who, assuming the forms of a Hog, of a Lion, of Rama, and of Krishna, pierced, lacerated, shot and kicked, by means of his tusk, claws, arrow and feet; so that these four persons, இரணியாட்சன், இரணியன், ஈரைந்தலையன், and கஞ்சன், were killed. Observe the four subjects in the first line are employed as nominatives to துஞ்ச, and the four instruments follow next in order just before their respective effects, and the true nominatives in the verse are placed last, referring to the four exploits performed by the four agents. முறைபிழை, s. vīṇ (p. 398) adj. and s. Vain, useless, unemployed, unprofitable. அதொருவீண்காரியம். It is a vain thing. அதுவீணாய்போயிற்று. It became useless அவன்வீணாய்த்திரிகிறான். He is unemployed. வீணலப்பு, v. noun. Talking to no purpose. வீணன், s. An idle, useless person. வீணாய்--விணுக்கு--வீணே, adv. Vainly. வீணாரவீணன், s. A person who has no right to what he demands. வீணாவிலே, As வீணாய். வீணிழவு, s. A vain deprivation, useless privation. வீண்காலம்--வீணாள், s. Time spent in vain. வீண்செலவு, s.
