To subtract or deduct a number in reckoning with kernels, seeds, &c. அலகுகிட்டுகை, v. noun. Having the lock-jaw. அலகுகூடை, s. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. nel (p. 281) --நெல்லு, s. Unhusked rice, paddy, சாலி. 2. Rice-plant, the growing crop, &c., நெற்பயிர். 3. A measure, the length of a rice-corn, ஓரளவு. See எட்க டை.--Note. Of நெல், there are many varieties, but the more common are கார்நெல், குளநெல், சம்பாநெல், செந்நெல், மிளகிநெல், வாலா னெல், which see severally.--The final letter is changed by rule, as நெற்கதிர், நென் மணி. நெற்கொண்டுபோமளவும்நில்லாய்நெடுஞ்சுவரே. [prov.] Tithe of rice, or portion given as tax to government. நெல்லம்புல்--நெல்வைக்கோல், s. Paddy-straw. நெல்லரி, s. Sheaf of rice-corn. நெல்லிடை, s. A weight equal to a grain of paddy. நெல்லுக்கட்டிவைக்க, inf. To store up paddy. நெல்லுக்குத்த, inf. To beat paddy in a mortar. See குத்து, v. நெல்லுச்சுமை, s. A load of paddy. நெல்லுப்பிடிக்க, inf.
