aṭukku (p. 8) s. A pile, row, tier, regular arrangement of goods or things, regular series, order, adjustment, system, வரி சை. 2. Orderly arrangements of subjects, the heads or topics in a writing or discourse, &c., எழுதுமுறை. 3. Four threads of yarn-in use among weavers, நூலடுக்கு. (c.) 4. Repetition of a phrase implying alarm, &c., with no other words intervening, அடுக்குச் சொல், as தீத்தீத்தீ, fire, fire, fire. (p.) 5. [in anat.] A layer, சிரேணி. அடுக்கடுக்காகவைக்க, inf. To arrange many things in rows, pile up in order. அடுக்கானகன்னி, s. A perfect woman. அடுக்குக்குலைக்க, inf. To put in disorder, as things in a row, pile, &c. அடுக்குக்குலைய, inf. To become disordered, deranged as business affairs, to go to decay as one's circumstances. அடுக்குத்தீபம், s. A kind of lamp in temples, used by the priests before the idol. அடுக்கத்தொடர், s. Repetition of a word or phrase two or three times, as, பாம்புபாம்பு. அடுக்குப்பண்ண, inf. To arrange, put in order, prepare. அடுக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. [prov.] To rehearse as stage players, previous to the public exhibition. (ஒத்திக்கைபார்க்க is used on the continent.) அடுக்குப்பானை, s. Pots arranged, especially in a cook-house, one upon another for various uses. அடுக்குமல்லிகை, s. A species of the Arabian Jasmine, ஓர்மல்லிகை. அடுக்குமுள்ளி, s. A species of the முள்ளி shrub. அடுக்குமெத்தை, s. A couch with pillows placed one upon another. 2. A house built of different lofts, or stories. அடுக்கூமத்தை, s. A species of the ஊமத்தை. 13)

ari (p. 23) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To sift, separate larger and smaller bodies with the hand, sieve, riddle, &c., கொ ழிக்க. 2. To separate rubbish from dried leaves with the hand, in order to gather the latter for fuel, சருகரிக்க. 3. To beat and wash away, as flowing water on sand, or waves on the shore, washing away the earth and leaving the pebbles, &c. behind, நீர்மணலையரிக்க. 4. To wash rice, separate dust and grit from rice, &c., by washing; or particles of gold, silver, &c., கழுவிப்பி ரிக்க. 5. To gnaw as white ants and other vermin, செல்முதலியவரிக்க. 6. To corrode, as rust, &c., cut away, as caustics, consumemar, as moths, கல்ல. 7. To tease, vex by importunity, as creditors, an urgent child, &c., மனதையலைக்க. 8. To take away one's property by little and little, சிறிதுசிறிதாக க்கவர. 9. [in arith.] To divide, பங்கிட. அரித்துப்பிடுங்குகிறான். He teases or vexes by incessant entreaties, (lit.) he stings or bites as lice. மணிகளையரித்தெடுத்தான். He separated and took the precious stones. அரிகறையான், s. A teasing person, (lit.) a gnawing white ant. அரிபிளவை, s. A cancerous formation, constantly eating into the flesh, ஓர்வகைப்பரு. அரிபுழு, s. Worms constantly grawing and causing itching irritation, &c. (c.) அரிபெட்டி, s. A sieve or cullender, சல்லடை. அரிமணல், s. Fine sand. அரிப்பு, v. noun. Sifting, separating. 2. Nibbling, gnawing, &c. 3. Itching. 4. Corrosion. 5. Smartness. (c.) அரிப்பன்--அரிப்பான்--அரிப்புக் காரன், s. A sifter, one who sifts sand in the street, or the dust of the goldsmith. அரிப்புக்கூடை, s. A riddle.

aṟu (p. 33) num. adj. Contraction of ஆறு, six, used in combination. அறுகால்--அறுபதம், s. A bee or beetle, வண்டு. (p.) அறுகாற்பீடம், s. A pedestal of an altar, or the altar sacred to மீனாட்சி at Madura--of mystic virtues. அறுகுணன், s. God, கடவுள். (p.) அறுகோணம், s. A hexagon, hexangular figure. அறுசரம், s. A sweet sounding lute. aṟpam (p. 33) s. Littleness, any thing of trifling import, of small consequence, insignificance, சிறுமை. 2. Inferiority, a trifle, இழிவு. Wils. p. 74. ALPA. 3. Slightness, இலேசு. 4. (p.) A dog, நாய். அற்ப ஆசை கோடிதவத்தைக்கெடுக்கும். The coveting of a small thing destroys the penance of years. இதொரு அற்பகாரியம். This is a trifling thing. அற்பசங்கை--அற்பாசமனம், s. The act of making urine, modesté--in reference to those who wear the string. அற்பத்தனம், s. Vileness, meanness. அற்பபுத்தி, s. Low wit, folly, silliness. அற்பமாய், adv. Meanly, basely, vilely. அற்பன், s. (pl. அற்பர்.) An inferior, low-caste or ill-bred person, a mean person. அற்பனுக்குப்பவிஷுவந்தாலத்தராத்திரியிற்குடை பிடிப்பான். If a mean person has obtained wealth, he will carry an umbrella even at midnight. 67)

aviẕ (p. 31) s. A single grain of boiled rice, ஓர்சோறு. (c.) வடித்தபானையிலோரவிழுங்கிடையாது. A single grain of rice will not be found in a well cleaned vessel. கலவுமிதின்றாலோரவிழ்தட்டாதா? If you eat twelve marcals of husks, will not one grain of rice touch (your teeth?) i. e. if you take much trouble, will you not derive some benefit? 11)

āṉ (p. 44) The common termination of the third person masc. sing. படர்க்கை யொருமையாண்பால்விகுதி--as பார்ப்பான், he will see. 2. To press down or upon, bear upon, press with a style or other instrument, அழுத்த. 4. To beat down--as a floor, beat into-as a nail, to make firm or compact by beating, அடித்திருத்த. 5. To place upon, put in or upon, to fix, make stationary, நிலைபெ றச்செய்ய. 6. v. n. To sink down--as a house or foundation, இருத்திக்கொள்ள; [ex இரு.] வீடிருத்திக்கொண்டது. The house is sunk down. சுமையெனதுதலையிலிருத்துகின்றது. The load bears heavily on my head. நிரம்பியபானையையுறியிலிருத்த. To place a full vessel upon the swing. இருத்திப்பேச, inf. To speak emphatically or forcibly, to speak impressively. இருத்திப்போட, inf. To cause to settle, fix, make a thing stationary, cause a vessel to run aground. இருத்தியெழுத, inf. To write, pressing on the writing material. மனதிலிருத்த, inf. To bear in mind, impress on one's own mind, to think on, contemplate. 74)

iṟ (p. 56) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To die, become extinct, cease, to be terminated, ended, exterminated, சாவ. 2. To decay, rot, moulder, waste. perish, அழிய. 3. (p.) To become antiquated, disused, obsolete, to fall into desuetude, பழமையாக. 4. To go, pass, pass by, proceed, pass--as time, to elapse, செல்ல. 5. Innumerable. அளவிறந்த, rel. part. Beyond measure, immense. இறப்பு, v. noun. Death, dying, extinction, மரிப்பு. 2. Mouldering, decay, waste, அழிகை. 3. (p.) Passage, passing, loss &c. of time, செல்லுகை. 4. Excess, prominence, superabundance, மிகுதி. 5. Transgression, trespass, wrong, offence, injury, misdemeanor, harm, evil, கடக்கை. 6. iẕi (p. 55) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To descend, dismount, sink, fall into, to be involved in, இறங்க. 2. To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

utṭu (p. 59) s. Lip, lips, இதழ். 2. (fig.) Brim, margin, பானைமுதலியவற்றின்விளிம்பு. 3. The lip of a wound, வெட்டுவாய். உதடன், s. (fem. உதடி.) A blubber-lipped person, பருத்தவுதடன். உதடுதுடிக்க, inf. To quiver as the lips in anger. உதடுபிதுக்கி, s. A thick-lipped person. உதடுமடிக்க, inf. To bite the lips in anger. உதடுவெடிப்பு, s. Harelip. உதட்டடி, s. Angry, menace, bluster, boisterousness, வாயடி. உதட்டடியடிக்க, inf. To disconcert a plan by blustering. உதட்டுப்புண், s. Sore on the lip. உதட்டைப்பிதுக்க, inf. To pout, to shoot out the lower lip by way of negation or disdain. மூளியுதடு, s. A lip of which a part is wanting. 2. A harelip. மேலுதடு, s. The upper lip. கீழுதடு, s. The lower lip. 135)

utṟu (p. 60) கிறேன், உதறினேன், வேன், உதற, v. a. To shake off, throw off by shaking, to shake a thing, especially a cloth; to shake the feet, hands, &c.; to shake itself --as an animal; to shake the head--as a dog having something in its mouth, உதறிப் போட. 2. To shake or thrust off a person, animal or thing that adheres to one; to extricate one's self from another in wrestling by shaking, pushing, &c., விதிர்க்க. 3. To shake off a business, affairs, office, &c., தள்ளிவிட. 4. To snatch or wrest one's self from the grasp of another. (See திமிற.) 5. (fig.) To renounce friends and social life for the desert--as an ascetic, நீக்க. 6. To strike--as the hands, feet, &c. through pain, grief, fear, anger, &c., துக்கமுதலியவற் றாற்கைவிதிர்க்க. 7. v. n. To shake with ague, fever, palsy, &c., நடுங்க. உதறிக்கொண்டுபோகிறான். He is refractory. இனஞ்சனம்யாவையுமுதறிவிட்டுப்போனான். He has utterly renounced his relations and friends--as a devotee, or to form other connections. என்வார்த்தையையுதறிவிடாதே. Do not reject what I say. உதறிமுறிப்பான், s. The விஷ்ணு காந்தை plant, Spharanthus Indicus. உதறுகாலி, s. A cow that kicks, or twitches away its leg and will not be milked, உதறுகாற்பசு. 2. A woman that shakes her feet in walking, உதறுகாற் பெண்--such a woman is supposed to bring evil upon her children and household. உள்ளதையுங்கெடுத்தாளுதறுகாலிவந்து. When this woman who shakes her feet in walking joined the family she destroyed all its wealth. கையையுதற, inf. To shake the hands when under the influence of strong emotion, especially grief. 4) *

umi (p. 62) s. Husk, chaff, hull, bran, தானியங்களினுமி. (c.) உமிக்கரப்பான், s. A small kind of eruption especially in children. உமிக்கரி--உமிச்சாம்பல், s. Ricehusk, charcoal used for cleaning the teeth, polishing metals, &c. உமிக்காந்தல், s. A fire by ricehusks. உமிக்கூர்--உமிமூக்கு, s. The apex of rice chaff broken off, or several of them. உமிச்சட்டி, s. A vessel containing chaff in which fire is kept alive. உமிச்சிரங்கு, s. A superficial troublesome kind of itch. See நமைச் சிரங்கு. உமித்தவிடு, s. Bran mixed with fine or broken chaff given to cows, coarse bran. உமிநகம், s. Very thin nails. கூருமி, s. See உமிக்கூர். குற்றுமி, s. Broken husk. 76)
