uttiyāpaṉam (p. 61) s. A ceremony at the termination of a long periodical fast, &c., performed to secure its benefits which would otherwise be lost--the merit of the fast and of all the pains, austerities, labors, &c., would in that case be surrendered-the benefits of fasts so performed in compliance with vows are obtainable either in this life or the future, நோன்புமுடிக்கை. 4) *

uṭai (p. 59) s. Wealth, செல்வம். 2. Owning, belonging to, being owned, possessed, உடைமை. This word is conjugated as a symbolic verb, in the various inflections of which, or in the abstract form உடைமை, it chiefly obtains; when used as a qualifying prefix in its simple form, except as a participle, it requires the reduplication of the hard letters. பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன், s. The patron of a poem to whom it is addressed. 2. The hero of a poem. உடைப்பெருஞ்செல்வர், s. Those possessed of great wealth. உடைத்து. Third person sing. neut. of a symbolic verb often used appellatively with ஆகுதல். It has, possesses, belongs to, is subject to. இது அவற்குடைத்து. This belongs to him. மகிமையுடைத்தானமோட்சம். Glorious bliss. அச்சாணியன்னாருடைத்து. (The world) possessing persons as important (to society) as the linch pin is to a chariot. (குறள்.) யாக்கைஅழிவுடைத்தாயிருக்கின்றது. The body is perishable. உடைத்தானவன், s. A proprietor, possessor, one subject to.--Note. This form, though a solecism, is allowed. உடைய. The participle of the verb, (1) used as a form of the sixth or possessive case, ஆறாம்வேற்றுமைச்சொல்லுரு பு--as என்னுடையபொருள், my property. 2. Affixed to nouns it governs the accusative case expressed or understood--as மரத்தையுடையவன், the owner of the tree. Sometimes it is annexed to the dative --as பொருளுக்குடையவன், an heir. என்னுடையது. It is mine. மணமுடையபூ, s. A fragrant flower. மரத்தினுடையகொம்பு, s. The branch of a tree. உடையவன்--உடையான், (third pers. masc. sing.) He has, he possesses, (often used appellatively). 2. appel. n. He who has, he who possesses. (a) the owner, the possessor, (b) the Supreme Being, (c) a rich man, (d) a king, a lord, (e) the master of the house. உடையார், s. The rich, the wealthy, the opulent. 2. [prov.] A district officer. 3. A title among some tribes of Hindus. உடையார்முன்னில்லார்போல். Like the poor in the presence of the wealthy. ஆஸ்திக்குடையவன், s. An heir. மண்ணுடையான், s. A potter, குயவன். ஆஸ்தியுடையவன், s. A proprietor. ஊருடையார், s. A district officer, a registrar of land, &c. வீட்டுடையான், s. The master of a house, the husband. 99)

ūki (p. 69) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To consider well, deliberate, discern clearly, reason well, நினைக்க. 2. To conjecture, guess, infer, உத்தேசிக்க. (p.) உன்மத்தர், s. Deranged persons, பித்தர். 2. Infatuated, or intoxicated persons, வெறியர். 3. Persons under the power of illusion, மயக்கமுடையோர். (தீ. 328.) Wils. p. 151. ūmāṇṭi (p. 70) s. [prov. vul. also உம் மாண்டி.] A kind of play among children, பிள்ளைகள்விளையாட்டிலொன்று. 2. A bug-bear, பூச்சாண்டி. ஊமாண்டிகாட்ட, inf. To frighten children with a bug-bear. ஊமாண்டிவிளையாட, inf. To play a game--as children, pretending to frighten each other. 10)

uti (p. 60) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To rise--as the sun, moon, &c., உதயமாக. 2. To be born--as a good or great personage, to be born, (spoken auspiciously, sometimes of common persons) பிறக்க. 3. To become incarnate--as a deity, to assume a form, அவதரிக்க. 4. To spring, arise, come into existence, grow out of, (தீ. 55.) to originate, become formed or developed, to have origin--as a book, science, &c., to arise--as primitive elements one out of another; to become evolved--as the world, &c., தோன்ற. 5. To commence--as a new period of time whether age, year, a month or otherwise, காலந்தொடங்க. 6. To swell, increase in size, பருக்க. நானுடனேயங்கேவந்துதிப்பேன். I will be in your company immediately. உலகமுதித்துதித்தொடுங்கும். The worlds appear and disappear again and again, (emanating from and being resolved into their primitive elements). கிணற்றிலேதண்ணீருதித்தது. The water has sprung up in the (new) well--an auspicious word. மனதிலுதித்தநினைவு. The thoughts that arose in the mind. 14) *

uv (p. 66) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To be pleased with, to approve of, to like, விரும்ப. 2. v. n. To be glad of, to rejoice in, to be delighted with, மகிழ. 3. [vul.] To be pleasing, agreeable, இன்பமாயிருக்க. அவருக்குவந்தசெய்கை. A thing pleasing to him. உலகுவப்பச்செய்து. Acting so that the world may be pleased with it-- (நாலடி.) காய்தலுவத்தலகற்றி. ulāvu (p. 66) கிறேன், உலாவினேன், வேன், உலாவ, v. n. To move about, walk or ride for recreation, exercise, &c., to pass to and fro, walk at leisure, take a jaunt, an excursion, a stroll, a ramble, சாரிபோக. 2. To go in procession, to parade the streets--as festal processions, ஊர்வலம்வர. உலாயதுகலாபமஞ்ஞை. The long tailed peacock gently moved along. காருலாவுசோலை. A forest of trees so lofty that the passing clouds move in their tops. நின்கோலுலாவுநிலத்து. In the country over which thy sceptre is wielded-- (தண்டி.) திரைசென்றுலாஞ்சேர்ப்ப. O! ruler of the coasts on which the waves sport. (உலரம் for உலாவும்.) காதளவுசென்றுலாவுங்கண். An eye that looks every where, (lit.) the eye that passes to the ear. உலாவித்திரிய, inf. To walk about idly, or at leisure. உலா, v. noun. Procession, moving about for recreation or exercise, a ramble, a jaunt, an excursion, a stroll, an airing, சாரிவருதல். 2. A species of poem in the நேரிசைக்கலிவெண்பா, in which the praises of a hero are sung by women of the seven different ages, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். உலாப்போதல், v. noun. Rambling, strolling, taking an excursion, a jaunt. 17)

urukku (p. 65) கிறேன், உருக்கினேன், வே ன், உருக்க, v. a. To melt with heat--as metals, or other congealed substances, to dissolve, liquify, fuse, run, தீயிற்கரைக்க. 2. To reduce one as a disease, to emaciate, வாட்ட. 3. To afflict, distress, வருத்த. (சத. 21.) இன்சொல்லிறைநெஞ்சுருக்கினான். By sweet speech, he melted the heart of the divinity. (சிவசிவ.) வியாதிசரீரத்தையுருக்கிப்போட்டது. The disease has emaciated him. எத்தனையுருக்கிலேயுருக்கினான்? How many times did it take to melt it? நன்னாளிற்பொன்னுருக்கு. Melt gold on an auspicious day. உருக்கிச்சாய்க்க, inf. To cast or run metals in bars, in mass, &c. for further use. உருக்கிவார்க்க, inf. To cast, found, to run metals. உருக்குகாரம், s. Borax, வெண் காரம். உருக்குப்பிரமியம், s. Gonorrh&ae;a with a discharge of blood, இரத்தப்பிர மியம். உருக்குமணி, s. Solid globules of gold soldered together around a ring and worn by women as an ear-pendent, ஓராபரணம். எலும்புருக்கி, s. An emaciating disease, ஓர்வியாதி. உருக்கு, v. noun. Fusion, melting, liquifaction, உருக்குகை. உருக்கன், s. [prov.] An emaciating or stinting disease--as of men or plantains, &c., ஓர்நோய். உருக்கனடித்தல், v. noun. Stinting or blighting--as disease especially in plantains. உருக்கினம், s. A kind of arsenic, அஞ்சனபாஷாணம். 2. Any thing that facilitates the fusion of metals--as borax. புத்துருக்குநெய், s.
