ēṇi (p. 78) s. A ladder, இறைவை. 2. (p.) A limit, extent, boundary, எல்லை. 3. A country, a territory, நாடு. அவனோடிவனையேணிவைத்துப்பார்த்தாலுங்காணாது. There is no comparison between them. ஏணிசாத்த, inf. To place a ladder against a wall, &c. ஏணிப்பந்தம், s. A stick or beam with a row of torches borne on the shoulders of two men in nightly processions, ஓர்வகைத்தீவர்த்தி. ஏணிப்பழு, s. Steps of a ladder, rundles. ஏணிப்பழுவாலேற--ஏணிமேலேற, inf. To climb up a ladder. கண்ணேணி, s. See கண். காலேணி--வீசுகாலேணி, s. A ladder with two supporting legs. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder.

ēṇ (p. 79) s. A firm, secure situation, stability, நிலைபேறு. 2. Strength, firmness, power, valor, exploit, achievement, வலி. (Compare ஏணம்.) 3. Assumption, arrogance, பெருமை. (p.) 4. [prov.] Crookedness, வளைவு. ஏண்பலபகர்ந்தனை. You have told many (of your captain's) valorous deeds. (காந்.) ஏணிலாதவர், s. Those unstable, unsteady, weak, &c. (காந்.) ஏணுற்றார், s. The valiant. ēngku (p. 78) கிறேன், ஏங்கினேன், வேன், ஏங்க. v. n. To weep, cry, wail; to call as a peacock, அழ. 2. To faint through fear, sorrow, &c., வாட. 3. To fear, dread, be aghast, be panic-struck, be startled, be at one's wit's end, be shocked, திகிலுற. 4. To be concerned, to regret deeply, to be in great suspense, கவலைப்பட. 5. (இராமா.) To sound, roar, ஒலிக்க. ஏங்கித்திரியேல். Do not yield to anguish and sorrow. (ஆத்தி.) ஏங்கினாற்போலேசீவன்போயிற்று. He was so overcome with fear (grief, &c.) that he instantly died. ஏங்கிப்போக, inf. To faint through fear, to be in deep concern, to be grieved for, to be exceedingly anxious. ஏக்கம்--ஏக்கரவு, v. noun. Sudden fear, fright, trepidation, alarm, consternation, stupor, panic, ஏங்குகை. 2. Anxiety, deep concern, கவலை. 3. Despondency, despair, ஆறாக்கவலை. ஏக்கம். With a verb--as பிடிக்க, and dative of person, &c., signifies to languish, despond, &c. ஏக்கமெடுக்க--ஏக்கம்பிடிக்க, inf. To have excessive sorrow, to be vexed. மகன்செத்ததினாலேயவளுக்கேக்கம்பிடித்்தது..... She languishes at the death of her son. ஏங்கல், v. noun. Screaming--as a peacock, மயிற்குரல். 2. Weeping. 3. The act of sounding. ஏங்குற, inf. To be sorrowful or thoughtful. 6)

ē (p. 76) . One of the seven long vowels, நெட்டுயிரிலொன்று. 2. An arrow, அம்பு. 3. A particle of emphasis, &c., இடைச்சொல். In நன்னூல், it is said to have six different uses: 1. பிரிநிலை, a distinguishing particle-as அவனேசொன்னான், it was he who said it. In some cases, it would be used for self or selves in the plural where the connection demanded it--as he himself said it. 2. வினா, interrogative: அவனேகொண் டான், was it he that bought it? 3. எண், enumeration or copulative--as சாத்தனே கொற்றனே இருவரும்வந்தார், Sattan and Kottan both came; கடலே, கரையே, மரமே, மலரே, வளையே, இவ்வைந்து, the sea, the land, the tree, the flower, the conch, these five. 4. ஈற்றசை or அசைநிலை, a terminate expletive --as மல்லலோங்கெழில்யானைமருமம்பாய்ந்தொளித்த தே, (the weapon) lodged itself in the breast of the beautiful and powerful elephant. 5. தேற்றம், certainty, confidence, appeal, emphasis--as இதுள்ளதே, this is really true; முயற்குக்கோடில்லையே, the hare has no horns. 6. இசைநிறை, a poetic expletive for completing the metre--as ஏஏ இவ ளொருத்திபேடி, she is a hermaphrodite; பேடியோவென்றாரே, he said, is she an hermaphrodite? To these the commentator adds 7. எதிர்மறை, negative as implied by the tones and inflections of the speaker rather than expressed by the particle--as அவன்வந்தானே, he came, did he? implying he did not come. Another may also be given. 8. இகழ்ச்சி, an interjection of contempt--as எஏ--வைத்தியகாரா, oh, oh, (or fie, fie), thou stupid fellow. (p.) 5) *

To plough. அவன் எத்தனையேருழுகிறான்--அவனுக்கெத்தனையே ருழும். With how many yoke of oxen does he plough (his land)? i. e. how many yoke of oxen has he? or how many acres of arable land does he possess? ஏராண்மை, s. Ploughing, tillage, agriculture, உழவு. ஏராளர், s. Husbandmen, agriculturists, உழவர். ஏரின்வாழ்நர்--ஏருழவர்--ஏருழுநர் --ஏர்த்தொழிலர், s. Ploughmen, those who live by the plough, உழவர். ஏருழக்க, inf. To practise husbandry, பயிர்செய்ய. ஏரெழுபது, s. A poem of seventy stanzas in praise of the plopugh by கம்பர், ஓர்நூல். See Ellis. p. 44. (குறள்). ஏரோட்ட, inf. To plough, உழ. ஏர்க்கால், s. The shaft of a plough, கலப்பையின்கால். 2. Shaft of a carriage, வண்டியேர்க்கால். ஏர்ச்சீர், s. Implements of husbandry. 2. The wealth procurable by husbandry. ஏர்ச்சீரில்லாதவன். One who has neither oxen, implements of husbandry, nor seed, corn, &c. ஏர்த்தாயம், s. Ploughing in season. ஏர்த்தொழில், s. Agriculture, husbandry, உழவுத்தொழில். ஏர்நாழி, s. A small circular piece of wood with a hole in the centre to receive the cord வடக்கயிறு by which the ploughman can regulate the depth of the furrows, கலப்பையினோருறுப்பு. ஏர்ப்பண், s. [prov.] The rope for attaching the oxen to the plough, or the plough-beam to the yoke, பூட்டாங்க யிறு. ஏர்ப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Ploughing for the first time in the season, on an auspicious day begun with appropriate ceremonies, ஏர்கட்டுகை. ஏர்ப்பூட்ட, inf. To yoke the oxen to the plough. ஏர்வாரம், s. A share of the produce allowed for the team and agricultural implements used in cultivating the land, ஏர்க்காகக்கொடுக்கும்வாரம். முன்னேர்க்குண்டை, s. The first or best yoke of oxen. பின்னேர், s. The second or hindermost yoke of oxen. பொன்னேர்கட்ட, inf. To plough for the first time in the season on an auspicious day begun with the appropriate ceremonies--as ஏர்ப்பூட்ட. 52)

Abuse, affront, insult, scurrility, calling opprobrious names, இகழ்ச்சி. ஓரூர்ப்பேச்சோரூர்க்கேச்சு. Good language of one district is abuse in another. ஏச்சுக்காட்ட, inf.
