tvḷai (p. 227) s. A frog, மண்டூகம், Ran&ae; Temporaria. There are different species, as கிணற்றுத்தவளை--சொரியாந்தவளை--மணற்றவளை--பச் சைத்தவளை, &c. (c.) தவளைகத்த, inf. To croak as a frog. தவளைக்கல், s. A rough stone, சொறிக் கல். தவளைக்குஞ்சு, s. A tadpole, a periwinkle. தவளைக்குறங்கு--தவளைக்கால், s. [in jewelry.] A kind of clasp in a chain, பணிப்பூட்டு. 2. A kind of iron hook. தவளைச்சினை, s. Frog's spawn. தவளைதத்த, inf. To hop or leap, as a frog. 2. To play at leap-frog. தவளைநுரை, s. Frog's froth, containing spawn. தவளைப்பாட்டு, s. Boy's song, about the frog. தவளைப்பாய்ச்சல்--தவளைப்பாய்த்து, v. noun. A frog's leap. 2. A poetical transposition of words, one of the four சூத்திர விலை, which see.

tavam (p. 227) s. Penance, religious austerities, self-imposed mortification, to propitiate some deity, as தபம் and தவசு. தவசசாலை, s. A hermitage of place for the performance of austerities. தவத்தர், s. (plu.) Ascetics of the higher class, Munis, முனிவர். தவத்தி, s. A rigid devotee, or advanced ascetic, a Muni. தவத்தோன், s. An ascetic. தவநிலை, s. The method of performing religious austerities . 2. The profession or standing of a rigid devotee. தவப்பெண், s. A female ascetic, a nun. 2.
