mācam (p. 348) s. [gen. மாஸ்தையின், vul. for மாசத்தின்.] Month, as மாதம். W. p. 66. MASA. --Note. The abbreviated sign is . The months are solar, as the Vákya, and not the Siddkanta system, is followed. The twelve months are, சித்திரை, April, வைகாசி, May; ஆனி. June; ஆடி, July; ஆவணி, August; புரட்டாசி, September; ஐப்பசி, October; கார்த் திகை, November; மார்கழி, December; தை, January; மாசி, February; பங்குனி, march. Each of these begins about the 11th or 12th of the corresponding English month; so that it includes most of that month, and a part of the next. The months are also called in Sanscrit as சைத்திரம், வைசாகம், சேஷ்டம், ஆஷாடம், சிராவணம், பாத்திரபதம், ஆஸ்வீ சம், கார்த்திகம், மார்க்கசிரம், புஷியம், மாகம், பாற்கு ணம், To each of the months is alloted one of the twenty-seven asterisms; to April, சித்திரை; to May, விசாகம்; to June, மூலம்; to July, உத்திராடம்; to August, அவிட்டம்; to September, பூரட்டாதி; to October, அச்சுவினி; to November, கார்த்திகை; to December, மிருக சீரிடம்; to January, பூசம்; to February, மகம்; to March, உத்திரம்; that is, to the Tamil months corresponding generally with these. மாசந்தோறும். Monthly. போனமாசம். Last month, ultimo. நாளதுமாசம். The current month. வருகிறமாசம்-அடுத்தமாசம். Proximo, the next month. மாசகந்தாயம், s. Tax paid monthly. māṇikkam (p. 349) s. A ruby, a carbuncle. W. p. 655. MANIKYA. 2. A precious stone in general, இரத்தினப்பொது. (c.) மாணிக்கதீபம், s. A very bright gem, said to have been used in king's palaces as a light. மாணிக்கவாசகர், s. [hon.] A devotee of the Saiva religion and a poet. He flourished during the reign of அரிமர்த்த பாண்டியன் of Madura, and with அப்பர், சுந் தரர், and சம்பந்தர், destroyed Buddhism in Southern India. His compositions, consisting of hymns, and mantras, are considered by Saivas, as of divine authority and are called திருவாசகம், or sacred words. Those of the others, தேவாரம், or sacred hymns. From the place of his nativity, he is also named வாதவூரார். 21)
