The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. uṇmai (p. 59) s. Being, existence, entity, (opposed to இன்மை) உள்ளது. 2. Natural or intrinsic quality, essense, nature, இயல்பு. (p.) 3. Sincerity, honesty, probity, fidelity, uprightness, faithfulness, veracity, reality, fact, யதார்த்தம். 4. Certainty, ascertainment, மெய். 5. Oath, abjuration, சத்தி யம். 6. (p.) Destiny or entailment of actions issuing in joys and sorrows, ஊழ். 7. Wisdom, right knowledge, அறிவு. உண்மையானுண்டிவ்வுலகு. By the existence (of kindness, favor, politeness) the world is sustained. (குறள்.) நீயதற்குண்மைபண்ணிக்கொடுப்பாயா? Will you swear to it? உண்மைகண்டவன். One who has experienced the truth (of a religion). உண்மைத்தவறு, s. Falsification, உண்மைவழு. 2. Failure in moral rectitude, சன்மார்க்கவழு. 3. A breach of trust, நாணயப்பழுது. உண்மைத்தாழ்ச்சி, s. Unfaithful ness, breach of trust, உண்மைக்குறை. உண்மைத்தாற்பரியம், s. The real object, scope or design, யதார்த்தமானகருத்து. உண்மைத்துரோகம்--உண்மைப்பா தகம், s. A very flagrant breach of truth, flagitious crime of the guilt thus incurred, நம்பிக்கைத்துரோகம். உண்மைப்பட, inf. To become evident to the mind--as the deity to his worshippers, மெய்ப்பட. 2. To prove true --as religion, by means of the Shasters, arguments, miracles, &c., மெய்யாக. 3. To appear as a certainty to the exclusion of all doubt, hesitation, &c., நிச்சயப் பட. உண்மைப்படுத்த, inf. To prove or show to be true, மெய்ப்பிக்க. உண்மைப்பிடி, s. Tenacious adherence to a religion from a discovery of its truth. 2. Consistent and steady perseverance in religion. உண்மைப்பேதகம், s. Prevarication. 2. Breach of trust, unfaithfulness. உண்மைப்பொருள், s. The Deity, the real Being, as eternal, immutable, &c., மெய்ப்பொருள். 2. The meaning of the Vedas, or of a system of religion, உள்ளபொருள். உண்மையளவை, s. [in logic.] Ascertainment of a thing from the attributes or qualities affirmed of it--as when we hear that a stone attracts iron, we know that it is a magnet, பிரத்தியட்சப் பிரமாணம். உண்மையறிந்தவன், s. One who has discovered the reality, authenticity, mysteries, &c. of religion. 2. One who has experienced the truth, &c. of religion. உண்மையானதெய்வம், s. The true deity. உண்மையானவன், s. A man sincere in religion. 2. A man of probity. உண்மையுவமை, [in rhetoric.] A figure in which the simile is rejected, the reality being ascertained, மெய்யுவமை. 130) *

oẕi (p. 84) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. To cease, desist, cease from actions, dispense with, to intermit, cease--as trees from bearing for the season or entirely; to discontinue a course of actions good or bad, ஓய. 2. To be over--as a market, an assembly, &c., கலைய. 3. To be excepted, be empty, தவிர. 4. To go off, forsake, quit, evacuate, leave, நீங்க. 5. To fail, decline, be extinct, become annihilated, கெட. 6. The quarrel has ceased. வேலையொழிந்தது. The business is over, the affair is ended. ஒழிகடை, s. The state of being almost exhausted--as stores, &c., almost ended, nearly over. ஒழிந்தவேளை, s. Leisure. ஒழியிசை, s. [in grammar.] A kind of ellipsis. ஒழிய, inf. [used as an exceptive particle.] Except, besides, unless, without. நீரொழியப்பாலுண்குருகிற்றெரிந்து. Discriminating as nicely as the swan which extracts milk from water. அவன்வந்தாலொழியப்போகேன். Unless he come I will not go. ஒன்றொழியநானூறு, s. One less than four-hundred. அவனொழியவனைவரையுமழைத்தார்கள். They invited all but him. வழங்காதொழிய, inf. To grow into disuse, to become obsolete. உடம்பொழிய. The body failing-- (பழ மொழி.) துயிலொழிய, inf. To cease sleeping, to wake. ஒழிபு, s. Remainder, ஒழிகை. ஒழிபியல், s. Supplement, appendix, sequel, ஒழிந்தவற்றைக்கூறுமியல். ஒழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Being incessant, continual, unceasing, நீங்காமை. ஒழியாவொழுக்கம், s. Perseverance in virtuous actions. ஒழிவு, v. noun. Ceasing, forsaking, intermission, cessation, omission, ஒழிகை. 2. [in logic.] Inference by implication, omission or exception of the person or thing in question, in the conversation. 3. Want, defect, deficiency, இன்மை. ஒழிவிக்க, inf. kēvalam (p. 139) s. Singleness; what is simple or alone, தனிமை. 2. Uniqueness, entireness, the only one of its kind, exclusiveness, ஒருங்கு. 3. cūṉiyam (p. 201) s. Witchcraft, conjuring, sorcery, magic, enchantment, மாரணவித்தை, 2. Ceremonial defilement, அசுசி. 3. Vacuity, vacuum, chasm, nonentity, inanity, nonexistence of a being, quality, attribute, &c., இன்மை. 4. W. P. 854. S'OONYA. Emptiness, vacancy, void, பாழ். 5. The articles used in witchcraft (சூனியதிரவியம்), are seven, viz.: 1. எலும்பு, bones. 2. எட்டிவிறகு, wood of the poison-nut tree. 3. ஊமத்தம் வித்து, seeds of the datura. 4. வேப்பெண் ணெய், margosa-oil. 5. கரி, charcoal. 6. எருக் கம்பூ, flowers of the asclepias gigantea. 7. பாம்பு முள்மாலை, garland of the vertebra of the cobra-de-capella. சூனியகதி, s. A section in the poem of பிரபுலிங்கலீலை. சூனியக்காரன், s. fem. சூனியக்காரி.) A wizard, sorcerer, enchanter. சூனியம்பண்ண--சூனியஞ்செய்ய, inf. To be witch, to work witchcraft. 2. To injure, destroy, defile, annihilate, ruin. சூனியதிசை, s. The S. E. point of the compass, bring by some astrological or other influence deemed unpropitious. 2. The direction or side in which the breath does not pass from the nostril, right or left, at any given time. See. சரம். சூனியநிதி, s. A phasis of the moon, which, when a similar one occurs in the same month, is regarded as unpropitious, the other being propitious. சூனியத்துவம், s. Vacuity, emptiness, &c.,--as சூனியம், 4, 5, 6, which see. சூனியநாள், s. An unpropitious day. See கிழமைச்சூனியம். சூனியமனை, s. Bewitched ground. சூனியமாதம், s. Unpropitious months, viz.: மாசி, ஆடி, புரட்டாதி, மார்கழி, (c.) சூனியமாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To lie waste, to be desolate. சூனியமெடுக்க, inf. To remove the evil ascribed to whichcraft. சூனியம்வைக்க, inf. To bury bewitched articles for the injury of some one. சூனியமாய்ப்போக, inf. To be annihilated. 2. To be useless, unprofitable. 3. To be degenerate, to be ruined--as சுத் தசூனியமாய்ப்போய்விட்டான். சூனியவாதம், s. Atheism as a system, நாஸ்திகமதம். சூனியவாதி, s. An atheist. 2. (c.) As சூ னியக்காரன். சூனியவித்தை, s. Witchcraft, as சூனி யம். சூனியன், s. A lame person, a cripple, முடவன். (சது.) விவேகசூனியன்--ஞானசூனியன், s. One who has no wisdom, no wit; a fool. சூனியோபாதானம், s. [in Hindu Theology] Nonentity--as the material cause of created beings and things; nothing, considered as a principle from which the visible universe came into existence. See மயோபாதானம். nir (p. 277) A Sanscrit prefix implying negation, privation, இன்மை, as நிர்நாமன், the nameless; also fulness, நிறைவு, as நிர்நாசம், entire destruction. The final ர், often takes the particle உ, as நிரு; sometimes changes to ஷ், as நிஷ்களங்கம், being spotless; to ச், as நிச்சிந்தை, a quiet mind, and to ன், as நின் மலம். See துர். நிரங்குசம், s. Uncontrolled, self-willed, கட்டுப்படாமை; [ex அங்குசம், goad.] நிரங்குசன், s. The Deity, the uncontrolled, கடவுள். நிரஞ்சனம், s. Void of passions, or emotion, மாசின்மை. நிரஞ்சனன், s. The Deity, கடவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். நிரஞ்சனி, s. Parvati, Lukshmi, &c. நிரட்சம், s. Terrestrial equator. நிரட்சரம்--நிரக்ஷரம், s. That which is without letters, எழுத்தின்மை. நிரட்சரகுக்ஷி, s. A blockhead, one that does not know letters, மூடன்; [ex குக்ஷி. belly.] நிரதிகாரம், s. Being without authority. நிரதிகாரன், s. One not competent, not duly authorized to execute authority. 2. [in the agamas.] One unworthy, ineligible, unauthorized to perform sacred rites, அநதிகாரி. நிரந்தரம், s. Continuity, uninterruptedness, இடமின்மை. 2. (சது.) Closeness, nearness, நெருக்கம். 3. Perpetuity, எப் பொழுதும். 4. A monkey, குரங்கு. நிரந்தரன், s. The Supreme Being the incomprehensible, கடவுள். நிரபராதம், s. Faultlessness, blamelessness, குற்றமின்மை. நிரபராதி, s. An innocent person. நிரபேட்சம்--நிரபேட்சை--நிரபே��வுள். நிருநாமன், s. The Deity--as நிருணா மன். நிருபாதி, s. Freedom or liberation from passions, or from pain, suffering, &c., உபாதியின்மை; [ex உபாதி, pain.] நிருபாதிகம், s. That which is freed, as the mind of the ascetic from secularities, &c., நிர்விகற்பம். நிருபாதானம், s. Being without an immediate, proximate cause, துணைக்காரண மின்மை; [ex உபாதானம்.] நிருமதம், s. An elephant grown quiet by age, free venereal fury, மதமில்லா யானை. நிருமலம்--நிர்மலம்--நின்மலம். s. Immaculateness, freedom from impurity, மாசின்மை. நிருமலன், s. The Supreme Being, கட வுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha, அருகன். 4. Vishnu, விஷ்ணு. நிருமூடம்--நிர்மூடம், s. Stupidity, blockishness, அறிவின்மைமிகுதி; also நின் மூடம்; [ex நிர், fulness.] நிருமூடன், s. A stupid man, a fool a ninny. நிருமூலம்--நிர்மூலம், s. That which is baseless, or without root, மூலமின்மை. 2. Extirpation, utter destruction, total extinction, பாழாதல்; also நின்மூலம். நிருமூலப்பட--நிருமூலமாக, inf. To be utterly destroyed. நிருமூலமாக்க--நிரூமூலம்பண்ண, inf. To destroy totally. நிருவாசம், s. That which is uninhabited, without occupant, குடியின்மை. நிருவிகற்பம்--நிர்விகற்பம், s. Freedom from passions, emotions, &c., entire tranquillity of the soul by abstract devotion, விகற்பமின்மை. நிருவிகற்பக்காட்சி, s. [in the Agama log.] Indefinite or indistinct knowledge, perception, &c. See காட்சி. நிருவிகற்பசமாதி--நிருவிகற்பச்சமாதி, s. The state of the ascetic, void of all affection, passion, &c., ஒர்யோகநிலை. நிருவிகாரம்--நிர்விகாரம், s. Unchangeableness, as in the Deity, who, in performing his operations is unaffected by them and in the actions of creatures has no participation or contamination, விகாரமின்மை. 2. Freedom from passions, &c., as நிர்க்குணம். நிருவிகாரி--நிர்விகாரி, s. One free from change as the Deity, or as the soul approximating to the Deity, கடவுள். நிருவிக்கினம்--நிர்விக்கினம், s. Freedom from obstruction, impediment, இடையூறி ன்மை. நிருவிசாரம்--நிர்விசாரம், s. Carelessness, recklessness, வேண்டாமை. 2. Tranquillity, freedom from, கவலையின்மை. நிருவிடம்--நிருவிஷம்--நிர்விஷம். s. A plant, Curcuma Zedoaria from which a poisonous drug is extracted, used as an antidote to snake bites, ஓர்பூண்டு. 2. (fig.) [ex நிர், fulness.] A very wicked person, துன்மார்க்கன். நிர்க்குணம், s. [vul. நிர்க்குணம்] Being without attributes, குணமின்மை. நிர்க்குணன், s. The Deity. See குணம். நிர்த்தாட்சிணியம், s. An unfavorable look, unkindness, unmindfulness, கண் ணோட்டமின்மை. நிர்த்தூளி, s. Utter demolition, entire destruction, சருவநாசம். நிர்தூளிபண்ண--நிர்த்தூளியாக்க, inf. To destroy utterly. நிர்த்தூளியாக, inf. To be reduced to dust, destroyed. நிர்நாசம், s. Imperishableness. See நிருநாசம். நிர்நிமித்தம்--நிர்நிமித்தியம், s. Without and cause, முகாந்தரமின்மை. நிர்ப்பத்தியம்--நிஷ்பத்தியம், s. Being without restraint in diet, &c., as a patient, பத்தியமின்மை. நிர்ப்பந்தம், s. [vul. நிற்பந்தம்] Misery, calamity, wretchedness, affliction.-Note. This word varies in Tamil from the Sanscrit. நிர்ப்பந்தமாயிருக்கிறவன். A woman in travail. (R.) நிர்ப்பாக்கியம், s. [vul. நிற்பாக்கியம்.] Unluckiness, misfortune. நிர்ப்பாக்கியன், s. An unhappy man. நிர்ப்பீசதீட்சை, s. Instruction of a disciple complete in itself. See தீட்சை. நிர்மலம்--நின்மலம், s. See நிருமலம். 140)

Vacuum of the mind, mental abstraction, &c., சூனியம்-Note. A hard consonant following this word is doubled; or its correlative nasal is substituted; the latter is the more elegant. --In Jaffna பாழ் is changed, to பாண், regularly in combination, before ஞ, ந, ம--as பாண்ஞானம், பாணாடு, பாண்மனை and improperly before க, வ, &c., பாண்கிணறு, பாண்வீடு. பாழூருக்குநரியேராசா. In a ruined town the jackal is lord பெண்ணைப்பாழிலேதள்ளினேன். I have thrown my daughter into a desert; by an unhappy marriage. பாழிலே--பாழுக்கு. In vain, to no purpose. பாழுக்கிறைக்க, inf. To labor, or spend time in vain; (lit.) to water in vain. பாழ்க்கடிக்க, inf. [v. noun. பாழ்க்கடி ப்பு.] To desolate, devastate, to reduce to ruins, பாழ்படச்செய்ய. பாழ்ங்கிணறு, s. An empty, neglected or decayed well. பாழ்ங்குடி, s. A desolate, distressed family. பாழ்ஞ்சேரி--பாழ்நத்தம், s. A decayed or deserted village. பாழ்நிலம், s. Barren land. பாழ்ந்துரவு, s. A decayed well. பாழ்ம்புறம், s. Desolated regions. பாழ்பட, inf. To be ruined, desolated, கெட. பாழ்வாயன், s. [fem. பாழ்வாய்ச்சி.] A complainer without cause. பாழ்வாய்கூற, inf. To manifest ingratitude by saying. I received nothing; to murmur. பாழ்வெளி, s. The vast expanse or vacuum in which Deity is supposed to dwell. 2. A desert or uninhabited region, மைதானவெளி. 42)
