kaṉṉikai (p. 102) s. A virgin undefloured, a girl unmarried, கன்னிமையழிவில்லாள். 2. The invocation at the commencement of all poems, imploring the protection, aid, blessing of the god worshipped by the author, and often of others, தெய்வவணக்கங்கூறுங்காப்பு. 8. cḷḷu (p. 173) --சள்ளை, s. [vul.] Difficulty, trouble, intricacy, annoyance, perplexity, தொந்தரவு. (c.) சள்ளுத்தீர்க்க, inf. To decide or settle an intricate affair, to finish a troublesome business, &c. சள்ளுப்பட, inf. To pick a quarrel, to undergo difficulties; to intermeddle. சள்ளுப்புள்ளு, s. A quarrel, a wrangle, சண்டை. 2. An intricate or troublesome business, சிக்குப்பிக்கு. சள்ளுப்புள்ளெனவிழ, inf. To scold, to be quarrelsome, to be cynical. சள்ளெனல், v. noun. mñcḷ (p. 339) s. Indian saffron, long-rooted turmeric, அரித்திரம், Curcuma longa.--Ofturmeric are different kinds, as கஸ்தூரிமஞ்சள், Amomum, L; கப்புமஞ்சள், கொச்சிமஞ்சள், a superior kind from Cochin; கறிமஞ்சள், another kind used for curries; கிழங்குமஞ்சள், turmeric with round roots; விரலிமஞ்சள், that with slender roots; மரமஞ்சள், a tree and its root so called, very bitter, and medicinal. See திரிமஞ்சள். (c.) மஞ்சட்பாவாடைபோர்த்துக்கொள்ளுகிறது. Putting on a saffron-colored cloth, a religious ceremony. மஞ்சட்கடம்பு, s. A tree, Nanclea cordifolia. மஞ்சட்கரு, s. The yolk of an egg. A kind of jaundice, causing yellowness of the eyes. மஞ்சட்காளான், s. A yellow kind of mushroom. மஞ்சட்கொத்து, s. A bunch of turmeric-root, and leaves. மஞ்சட்சாமந்தி--மஞ்சட்செவ்வந்தி, s. A species of சாமந்தி with yellow flowers. மஞ்சட்டிரளை, s. Balls of turmeric taken by a widow to the funeral pile and given to relations, in token of her blessing; [ex திரளை.] மஞ்சட்டுணி, s. [vul. மஞ்சத்துணி.] A little piece of cloth dipped in turmeric water and applied to a sore eye. மஞ்சட்டேறு, s. A root of turmeric. See தேறு. மஞ்சட்பட்டு, s. Saffron-colored silk. மஞ்சட்பாவட்டை, s. A shrub, Red dye-root, Morinda citrifolia. மஞ்சணத்தி--மஞ்சணாற்றி, s. A kind of tree. See மஞ்சணுணா. மஞ்சணிறம், s. Yellow color. மஞ்சணீர், s. Turmeric-water with other ingredients for sprinkling on a company at the close of a temple-festival, or marriage; [ex நீர்.] மஞ்சணீர்குடித்தல், v. noun. Drinking turmeric water, in adopting a child. மஞ்சணீர்ச்சீட்டு, s. A written agreement of adoption. தத்தபுத்திரஉடன்படிக்கை. மஞ்சணீர்ப்பிள்ளை, s. An adopted child. மஞ்சணீர்விளையாட்டு--மஞ்சள்விளையா ட்டு, s. Play with turmeric-water, at the close of a temple-festival, or at a marriage.--Note. Lime is often added to heighten the color, and cause mischief. மஞ்சணுணா--மஞ்சணத்தி--மஞ்சணாற்றி, s. A kind of நுணா tree, the timber of which is a bright yellow. மஞ்சணை, s. [contr. of மஞ்சள்நெய்.] Red paint with oil smeared by females, எண்ணெய்க்குங்குமம். [Southern usage.] மஞ்சளலரி, s. A species of அலரி. மஞ்சளாலாத்தி, s. The ceremony of waving turmeric-water about an idol, to dispel the blight of unlucky eyes. மஞ்சளிளங்கலையன், s. [prov.] A kind of rice. See இளங்கலையன். மஞ்சளெண்ணெய், s. Turmeric-oil, used medicinally. மஞ்சள்பூசுதல், inf. [v. noun மஞ்சட்பூ ச்சு.] To smear the person with turmeric water--as females, for beauty or good luck. மஞ்சள்மந்தாரை, s. A மந்தாரை shrub. மஞ்சள்வசந்தம், s. A joyful ceremony, in which turmeric is used, ஓர்சடங்கு. மஞ்சள்வாடை, s. Scent of turmeric at the house of a lying-in-woman, where, to avoid abortion, one pregnant should not come. மஞ்சள்வெயில், s. Bright yellow sunshine cast on objects, just before sunsetting, &c. 45) *

mantiram (p. 343) s. A mystical verse, as a prayer, or form of exorcism. 2. A section of the Vedas including prayers and hymns. See உபநிடதம் and வேதாங்கம். 3. Cloth tinged with red ochre, worn by ascetics, and religious mendicants, காவிச்சீலை. மந்திரகூர்மை, s. Rock-salt, இந்துப்பு. மந்திரக்காரன்--மந்திரவாதி--மந்திரவாளி, s. A conjurer. மந்திரக்கூறை, s. The cloth given by the bridegroom to the bride on the day of marriage, with incantations, &c., மணக் கூறை. 2. See கூறை. மந்திரசத்தி, s. The power of an incantation. மந்திரசாத்திரம், s. The knowledge of incantations. See கலைஞானம். மந்திரசித்தி, s. Success of incantations. See சித்தி. மந்திரசுத்தி, s. Purification by மந்திரம். See சுத்தி. மந்திரஸ்தம்பம், s. A post set up by sages, with incantations, as an antidote for venomous bites, or for magical purposes. மந்திரஸ்தாபனம், s. Uttering incantations over magical letters, diagrams, &c., to communicate virtue to them. See தாபனம். மந்திரஸ்நானம், s. (lit.) Magical bathing of the sick by sprinkling a few drops of water on the head and repeating magical letters. மந்திரஞ்செபிக்க--மந்திரஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To pronounce a mantra. மந்திரதந்திரம், s. A motion of the fingers while repeating incantations. மந்திரதந்திரத்தினாலேமயக்கம்வருவிக்க. To bewilder by enchantment. மந்திரதாரணை, s. One of the nine forms of worship by the Saiva yogis.
