A face as black as charcoal either naturally, or with rage. கரிக்கட்டி, s. A piece of charcoal. கரிக்கட்டை, s. A quenched firebrand. கரிக்காரன், s. A charcoal dealer. கரிக்காந்தல், s. [prov.] Particles of charred olas, rice husk and such-like thin substances, cinders of light bodies. See கரந்தல். கரிக்கிடங்கு, s. A pit or hole for burning charcoal. கரிக்குடல், s. [prov. vul.] The great gut, the rectum, மலக்குடல். கரிக்குருவி, s. A black bird greatly esteemed for its song, கஞ்சனம். It is said to peck crows and other large birds and to drive them away, Graceola religiosa. 2. A small black bird, ஓர்சிறுகுருவி. கரிக்கொள்ளி, s. A charred brand extinguished, குறைக்கொள்ளி. கரிக்கோடிடுதல், v. noun The appearing of soft hairs on the chin of young men. கரிச்சட்டி--கரிப்பானை, s. Begrimed, smutty pots. கரிச்சாம்பல், s. Black ashes, கறுத் தசாம்பல். கரிச்சுட, inf. To burn charcoal, to char, கரியுண்டாக்க. கரித்தண்ணீர், s. Water in which collied chatties have been washed. கரித்துண்டு--கரித்துணி, s. A dirty begrimed rag or cloth, கரிச்சீலை. கரிநெருப்பு, s. Fire made of charcoal, கரியிலுண்டானநெருப்பு. கரிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To be collied, be begrimed with soot, &c.--as a vessel on the fire, கரிப்பற்ற. கரிப்புரள, inf. To be collied, as clothes, &c. கரிப்புறத்திணை, s. Rules for explaining and proving a doctrine from the written and testimonies of the learned, சாட்சிப்புறத்திணை. கரிப்பூச, inf. To begrime with the smut of charcol. என்முகத்திலேகரிப்பூசிப்போட்டான். A cement of solder of குன்றிமணி seeds and alum, used by gold or silver smiths, காரமானபசை. காரம்போட, inf. To apply alkali, caustic, &c. காரம்போட்டுவெளுக்க, inf. To whiten cloth, &c., with lye or alkali. காரம்வைத்துப்புண்ணாக்க, inf. To make a sore by applying a corrosive, for reducing a tumour, &c. காரம்பூச, inf. To imbue cloth with alum--as a dyer, that it may retain the colour. காரலவணம், s. A corrosive preparation. 107)

To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note. The letters of the alphabet are substituted for numbers with a view to assist the memory and secure correctness in the tables. Compare சாவாக்கியம். நீதிசாரம், s. A treatise on equity. ஓர் நூல். பாதசாரம், s. The progress of the planets, reckoned, by quartering the signs. குருசாரம், s. The progress of Jupiter in his orbit, வியாழனடை. 38) *

cuṭlai (p. 193) s. A burning ground, a place for burning dead bodies, மயானம்; [ex சுடு, burn.] (c.) சுடலையிற்பேய். Devils that haunt burning places. சுடலைகாக்க, inf. To watch the funeral pile till the body is consumed; the office of a பறையன். சுடலைக்கரை, s. A place for burning the dead. சுடலைக்காடு, s. As சுடுகாடு. சுடலைக்குருவி, s. [prov.] A bird of passage with a long tail and large crest; which is active chiefly by night. Compare சாக்குருவி. சுடலைஞானம், s. (Sometimes சுடுகாட்டு வைராக்கியம்.) Solemn but transient impressions at a cremation. சுடலைநீறு, s. Ashes from the funeral pile. சுடுகாட்டுச்சாம்பல். சுடலைமாடன், s. An imp, a horrid goblin, ஓர்பேய். சுடலையாடி, s. nraiyāṉ (p. 270) s. A heron, செங்காநாரை. 2. [prov.] A small insignificant thing as a child, &c., சின்னது. [in derision.] நரையான்கட்லேயகப்பட்டான். He was bstructed by the flight of a heron.--Note.
