He has warded it off, acquitted himself well, given a gentle blow. ஒருதட்டுத்தட்டியிருக்கிறார். He has said something to frustrate the matter, or thrown in a word, &c. [prov.] தட்டிலும்வீச்சிலுங்காரியம்பார்க்க. To make a display and shift the expense on others. தட்டிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க. To support one's self at another's expense. தட்டுக்காரன், s. A rogue, a cunning fellow. 2. An evader, a prevaricator. தட்டுத்தட்ட, inf. To give a tap. 2. To evade. 3. To thwart or frustrate. 4. To act dexterously. தட்டுத்தடவல், v. noun. As தட்டல்த டவல், which see. தட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be destitute, to be in straits. செலவுக்குத்தட்டாயிருக்கிறது. We are in want of the means of subsistence. தட்டுக்கொட்டு, v. noun. [prov.] Exterior show without accomplishing one's wish. 2. A bauble, gew-gaw. 3. Living by stratagem, &c. தட்டுத்தடக்கு, v. noun. Hesitation, impediment. தட்டுத்தடக்கில்லாமல்வாசிக்கிறான். He reads fluently. தட்டுத்தாவரம், s. [prov.] Resort, resource, refuge, புகலிடம். தட்டுப்பட, inf. To be hit, to be struck--commonly accidentally. 2. To be tapped or beaten as a drum, cymbal, &c. 3. To lack, to be wanting--as stores, money, rain, &c. 4. To be felt by contact. 5. To be stopped in progress, as a vehicle, a performer, &c., To be understood. அவன் என்கண்ணுக்குத்தட்டுப்படவில்லை. I have not seen him any where. இப்போதுதான்எனக்குத்தட்டுப்பட்டது. Now I understand it. தட்டுண்டுபோக, inf. To be beaten off, scattered. 2. To be all threshed out--as rape-seed. 3. tuḷaci (p. 250) s. Tulasi, a fragrant herb held in great veneration by the Hindus; holy basil, which is said to be a female metamorphosed, துளவம். Ocymum sanctum. W. p. 381. TULASI.--Note. There are three kinds especially sacred to siva, viz.: வெ ண்டுளசி, சிறுதுளசி, சிவதுளசி, Oeymum tenuiflorum. There are others appropriated in Vishnu who claims also those of Siva. viz.: இராமதுளசி, கரியமால்துளசி, செந்துளசி, கருந் துளசி, விஷ்ணுதுளசி, பெருந்துளசி, Ocymum gratissimum. There are still other varieties. as கர்ப்பூரத்துளசி, which see; also காட்டுத் துளசி, Ocymum adscendens; நாய்த்துளசி, dog's basil, oppos. to நல்லதுளசி; நிலத்துளசி, Ocymum prostratum. (c.) துளசிதீர்த்தம், s. Tulasi leaves and consecrated water, taken in making oath in court, or, as a token of adherence to Vishnu on entering his temples. துளசிமணி, s. (also தாதமணி.) Beads made of the white Tulasi root or branch, worn by devotees of the Vishnu sect. துளசிமாடம், s. A raised place for Tulasi plants, instead of a flower pot. துளசிமாலை, s. A necklace made of Tulasi, whether leaves or beads. 27)

nṉṟu (p. 272) [appellative of a symbolic verb. or 3d per. neut. from நல், used substantively.] That which is good, or beneficial, a good, நல்லது. 2. Virtue, morality, நன்மை. 3. Greatness, excellence, பெருமை. 4. Copiousness, abundance, மிகுதி. 5. Prosperity, welfare, வாழ்வு. எல்லார்க்கும்நன்றாம்பணிதலவருள்ளுஞ்செல்வர்க்கே செலவந்தகைத்து. Doing good is becoming to all; to the rich it is added wealth. நன்றாய், adv. Well, prosperously, beautifully, liberally. எல்லாருக்கும்நன்றாய்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally to all. நன்றாயிரு. Farewell, prosper. நன்றாயிருக்க, inf. To be good, well, beautiful &c. 2. To prosper, flourish. நன்றாய்க்காய்க்க, inf. To bear fruit plentifully. 16)

nl (p. 270) --நல்ல, adj. [in combin. before க, ச, த, ப. changed to ற் and commonly before ம to ன்.] Good, excellent, beneficial, eminent, நன்மையான. 2. Acceptable, desirable, agreeable, ஏற்ற. 3. Abundant, copious, மிகுந்த. 4. Much, intence, அதிகமான. 5. Auspicious, propitious, fortunate, நன்னிமித்தமுள்ள.--Note. It is sometimes combined with words of had meaning to show intensity, as நல்லகள் ளன், a consummate thief. நல்லகாயம், s. Severe wound. நல்லகாய், s. Abundant fruit, மிகுகாய். இந்ததடவைநல்லகாய். The crop of fruit this time is abundant. நல்லகாலம், s. A propitious time; also நற்காலம். நல்லகுணம், s. Good temper, a benevolent, amiable disposition; also நற்குணம். நல்லகுணத்தோடேகொடு. Give, or pay freely. நல்லசடம், s. A helthy constitution, சுகசரீரம். நல்லசமயம், s. A good season, a favorable opportunity. நல்லசரக்கு, s. Superior goods, &c. See நற்சரக்கு. நல்லசனனம், s. A good birth. (Meton.) One blessed with a tendency to freedom form transmigration, and who employs his birth, to obtain salvation. நல்லசா, s. A good or auspicious death; not untimely, &c.; also நற்சா. நல்லசாமம், s. Midnight, dead of night, நடுச்சாமம். நல்லசெய்கை, s. A good, approved, or virtuous action. நல்லஞாபகம், s. As நல்லநினைப்பு. நல்லதண்ணீர்--நல்லசலம், s. Fresh, potable water. நல்லதண்ணீர்க்கடல், s. The sea of fresh water. நல்லதம்பிரான், s. [prov.] The hooded snake, regarded as a deity, நல்லபாம்பு. நல்லதரம், s. The first quality. நல்லதனம், s. Friendly, words, mildness, &c. நல்லதனம்பண்ண, inf. To pacify. நல்லது, appel. n. [pl. நல்லவை.] That which is good, well, very well, நன்மை யானது. நல்லதுசொல்ல, inf. To speak in one's favor. 2. To speak kindly. 3. To bid farewell. நல்லதுதீயது--நல்லதுபொல்லாதது, appel. n. See நாகப்பிரிதஷ்டை. நாகசின்னம்--நாகசுரம்--நாகஸ்வரம். s. [com. நாகசரம்.] A kind of pipe or clarionet, one of the chief musical instruments, ஓர்துளைக்கருவி. நாகதத்துவம், s. One of the qualities of women ஸ்திரீகுணத்தொன்று. நாகதம்பிரான்--நாகதேவன், s. [prov.] the cobra snake regarded as a god, properly applied to ஆதிசேஷன், the chief of the nether world. See நல்லதம்பிரான். நாகதாளி, s. A species of தாளி, the root of which is used by snake dancers-the snake drawing back its head, and retiring when it is presended; also deemed an antidote to snake bites, Cacumis anguinus, L. நாகதாளிகள்ளி, s. The spread and figured neck of the cobra, பாம்பின்படம். 2. [com. நாகவடம்.] An ear ornament in imitation of the spread neck of the cobra, ஓர்கா தணி. நாகபட்டணம், s. The town of Negapatam, ஓரூர். நாகபந்தம், s. One of the சித்திரகவி or curious kind of poems. நாகபாசம், s. [in mythol.] A kind of snake-like rope, with a noose or knot, and having life. It is obtained of the gods by austerities; and in war sent to entwine itself about the foe, பாம்புருவமான படைக்கலம். நாகப்பச்சை, s. A precious stone. See ஆற்றுப்பச்சை. நாகப்பற்று--நாகவாடை, s. Alloy of zine in silver, துத்துநாகப்பிடிப்பு. நாகப்பாம்பு, s. The cobra. நாகப்பிரதிஷ்டை, s. The making of a five headed cobra and worshipping it, to expiate the sin of killing a cobra by the person or his ancestors, which it is supposed prevents offspring. நாகப்பிரம்பு, s. A kind of rod in the shpe of a snake, ஓர்பிரம்பு. நாகப்பூ--நாகம்பூ, s. The flowers of the நாகம் tree, used medicinally; also called சிறுநாகப்பூ. நாகப்பூச்சி, s. A worm, an earth-worm, also called பூநாகம், by native doctors, who make of it several preparations. நாகமணல், s. Sand containing lead. நாகமணி--நாகரத்தினம், s. The gem supposed to be found in the head of the cobra. See ஐந்தலைநாகம். நாகமரம், s. A kind of red tree. நாகமல்லி--நாகமல்லிகை, s. A medicinal species of the மல்லிகை, used for dying black. The root forms a drug, White flowered justicia, Justicia nasuta, L. நாகமோடி, s. [with வேஷ்டி or சேலை.] A cloth with serpentine stripes, ஓர்பு டவை. நாகம்பூ, s. See நாகப்பூ. நாகராசா, s. The chief of the nagas, ஆதிசேடன். நாகலோகம், s. Swerga, தேவலோகம். 2. The world or region of the nagas under the earth, கீழுலகத்தொன்று. நாகவடம், s. See நாகபடம். நாகவராளி, s. A kind of tune, ஓரிரா கம். நாகவல்லி--நாகவள்ளி, s. A betel plant, வெற்றிலைக்கொடி. 2. [also நாகவல்லி முகூர்த்தம்.] The finishing ceremony of a marriage on the fifth day, கல்யாணச்ச டங்கிலொன்று. நாகவாடை, s. In gold coin, a slight alloy, supposed to be contracted from the metal of the mould, செம்பூறல். நாகவாய், s. An instrument used by turners, ஓர்கடைச்சற்கருவி. நாகாசனன், s. The Brahmany-kite, whose food is snakes; [ex அசனம், food.] நாகாத்திரம்--நாகாஸ்திரம், s. A dart, as நாகபாசம். நாகாந்தகன், s. Garuda, as the devourer of snakes, the vehicle of Vishnu, கருடன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] நாகாபரணம், s. An ornament in form of a cobra, worn by Siva, சிவனணியி னொன்று. நாகாபரணன், appel. n. Shade is pleasant, the red ants (under it) unpleasant; i. e. the patronage of the great is good, those around are troublesome. நிழல்நிற்கிறதாபார். See whether there is any shadow; i. e. see whether the sun shines. ஒதுங்கநிழலில்லை. There is no shade to resort to. 2. There is no place of refuge. அண்டநிழலில்லை. There is no shade; i. e. no place of refuge. தன்னிழல்தன்காற்கீழ்வர--தன்னிழல்தன்னடிக்கு வர. When one's shade is under foot; i. e. when it is exactly noon. நிழலாட, inf. To be reflected as an image in water, a mirror, &c. நிழலாட்டம், s. v. noun. Any thing like a shadow, shade in painting, &c. 2. Typical representation, adumbration, 3. A mere phantom. நிழலிட, inf.
