இளமை
iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. Youth, juvenility, இளமைப்பருவம். 2. Being reduced in rank, lowness of circumstances, want of respectability, lightness, எளிமை. ஆளிளந்தலைகண்டுதோணிமிதக்கும். A light shower of rain, drizzling rain. இளமையோன், s. A youth, a young man. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A very young man--as மழவன். இளமைவழிபாடு--இளவழிபாடு, s. Fickleness, unsteadiness. 2. Elements, rudiments. இளம்பசி, s. Slight hunger--as between meals, easily relieved by light food, or fruit. இளம்பச்சை, s. Light green. இளம்பதம், s. Imperfectness, immaturity, moderateness in state or quality, இளமை. 2. A peculiar quality in medicinal oils derived from immature heat in some cases a defect, in others an excellence, இளம்பாகம். 3. [in rhetoric.] Incongruity, impossibility, absurdity--as அலை கடல்களேழுந்தூர்த்தந்தாத்தினூடே--மலையனையமால் யானையோட்டிக்--கலவாரை--நீறுசெய்துவையநெ டுங்குடைக்கீழ்வாழ்வித்தான்--மாறாச்சீர்வையையார் கோன், the Pandian king of Madura of endless fame filled the seven seas with sand, drove his elephant through the sky, reduced his enemies to ashes, and brought the whole world under his sway. (அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Parvati the wife of Siva, the mother of the world, பார்ப்பதி. (p.) உலகமுண்டோன், s. Vishnu the world-eater, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகரட்சகன், s. The saviour or protector of the world. உலகரட்சணியம்--உலகரட்சை, s. Protection, or salvation of the world. உலகர், s. Worldlings, those engrossed by worldly pursuits. (தீ. 335.) (p.) உலகவழக்கம், s. The customs of the world. உலகவாசை--உலகவாஞ்சை, s. Ardent love of worldly, or sensual enjoyments, உலகவிருப்பம். உலகவாழ்வு, s. Temporal prosperity. உலகளந்தோன், s. Vishnu the measurer of the world, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகாசாரம், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. God, (lit.) the sovereign of the three worlds, கடவுள். (p.) மூவுலகுணர்ந்தோன், s. He who comprehends the three worlds, God, க டவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். (p.) மூவுலகேந்தி, s. உலோபம்
ulōpam (p. 66) s. Penuriousness, stinginess, close-fistedness, illiberality, ஈயாமை. 2. (p.) Covetousness, intense or greedy desire, cupidity, avarice, பொரளா சை. Wils. p. 725. LOB'HA. 3. [in grammar.] Elision of a letter, &c., கெடுதல்விகா ரம். 4. Want, destitution, குறைவு. This is given as one of the six moral evils. See பகை. Wils. p. 724. LOPA. யாகத்தைத்திரவியலோபமில்லாமற்செய்துமுடித்தார் கள். They performed the sacrifice without lack of money. உலோபத்தனம்--உலோபத்துவம், s. Penuriousness, cupidity, &c. உலோபத்துவமாய்ச்செய்ய, inf. To perform a ceremony illiberally or meanly. உலோபன், s. A niggard, a stingy person, a miser, பிசுனன். உலோபி, s. (mas. and fem.) An avaricious person, an extremely covetous person. Wils. p. 725. kṭumai (p. 88) s. Severity, harshness, cruelty, hard-heartedness, அகோரம். 2. Rigor, strictness, asperity, rigidness, earnestness, zealousness, கண்டிப்பு. 3. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Being too perpendicular, too little bent-- as a hoe, adze, &c., to the handle, or a plough-share to the shaft, நிமிர்வு--opp. to தணிசு. கடிச்சை, s. Niggardliness, உலோ பகுணம். கடிச்சைக்காரன், s. A niggard, a penurious man. கடியது, the neuter appellative.) That which is severe. கடியமோசம், s. Imminent danger. கடியவார்த்தை, s. Hard or angry words, offensive terms or language. கடியன், s. A severe, cruel man. கடுங்கணாளர், s. Cruel, savage, barbarous persons, கொடியோர். கடுங்கண், s. Cruelty, severity, barbarousness, unmercifulness, கொடுமை. 2. [prov.] The scallop of a palmyra leaf in a கோலுபட்டை, cut too closely, ஒலைக்கண். கடுங்கருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, farfetched unnatural meaning, கடமையானக ருத்து. கடுங்காய், s. [prov.] Unripe fruit, பழாதகாய். கடுங்காய்நுங்கு, s. Palmyra fruit, the kernel or pulp of which is too far advanced to be eatable, முதிர்ந்தநுங்கு. கடுங்காய்ச்சல், s. Violent fever, மிகுசுரம். 2. v. noun. Being over-heated-as by the smith, அதிககாய்ச்சல். 3. Being dried or scorched much in the sun, வெ யிலிலதிகமாய்க்காய்தல். கடுங்காய்ச்சலாக்காய்ந்துபோயிற்று. (The corn, &c.), is all scorched (not irrecoverably) by the sun and want of water, rain, &c. கடுங்காரநீர், s. An egg, முட்டை. கடுங்காரம், s. A powerful caustic, ஓர்வகையெரிமருந்து. 2. Excessive pungency, அதிகவுறைப்பு. கடுங்காலம், s. A hard season as in drought, scarcity, &c., a season of adversity, பஞ்சகாலம். 2. A hot season, hot weather, வெப்பமானகாலம். கடுங்காற்று, s. A strong breeze, a furious wind, a tempest, அதிககாற்று. கடுங்கூர்மை, s. Being sharp, அ திககூர்மை. 2. Salt from sesamum, கடுந்தி லாலவணம். 3. Salt of sulphur, கந்தகவுப்பு. 4. Sea salt, கடலுப்பு. கடுங்கூர்மைலவணம், s. Salt from urine, அமரியுப்பு. கடுங்கோடை, s. A severe drought, முதிர்வேனில். கடுங்கோபம், s. Violent anger. கடுஞ்சினப்பூமி--கடுந்தழற்பூமி, s. Alkaline earth, lixivium, உழமண். கடுஞ்சினேகம், s. Very close friendship, too great intimacy, அதிகசினேகம். கடுஞ்சினேகங்கண்ணுக்குப்பகை. Too great intimacy is productive of evil. கடுஞ்சுண்ணத்தி, s. Alum, சீனக் காரம். கடுஞ்சூடு, s. Great heat, அதிகசூடு. கடுஞ்செட்டு, s. Unfair traffic, trading at an exorbitant profit. கடுஞ்செய்கை, s. A cruel or wicked deed, கொடியகிரியை. கடுஞ்சொல், s. A severe word, a harsh expression, a reprimand, கொடுஞ் சொல். கடுதலைமுடிச்சு, s. [prov. prop. க டைதலைமுடிச்சு.] A treacherous contrivance, perfidy. கடுநடை, s. A tiresome walk, hard walking, a hard walk. கடுநெருப்பு, s. A fierce fire, a fire too large or too powerful for the occasion--as for culinary or chemical purposes. கடுந்தரை, s. Hard soil, வன்னிலம். கடுந்தோயல்--கடுந்தோய்ச்சல், v. noun. Over-tempering a weapon, &c., முதிர்ந்ததோயல். கடுமத்தியானம்--கடும்பகல், s. The intense heat of mid-day. கடுமுள், s. Weapons of warfare, யுத்தாயுதப்பொது. கடுமூர்க்கம், s. Great fury, vehement anger, அதிகமூர்க்கம். கடுமூர்க்கன், s. A furious man. கடும்பச்சை, s. A curious green stone, நாகப்பச்சை. கடும்பத்தி, s. Rigorous devotion, earnest excessive zeal, மிகுபத்தி. கடும்பத்தியம், s. A strict diet, கண் டிப்பானபத்தியம். கடும்புலி, s. A ferocious tiger, கொடும்புலி. கடும்புளிப்பு, s. Excessive sourness, அதிகபுளிப்பு. கடுவட்டி, s. Excessive interest, usury, அதிகவட்டி. கடுவழி, s. A rugged way, கடுமை யானவழி. கடுவிலை, s. An exorbitant price, அதிகவிலை. கடுவெயில், s. A burning sun, அதி கவெயில். கடுவெளி, s. A dry extensive plain or open space, free from trees, &c., a vast expanse, பெருவெளி. 2)

kaṉmam (p. 102) s. Moral actions, especially in their effects--as the cause of transmigrations and their accompanying joys and sorrows, pleasure and pains, intelligence or stupidity, &c., சஞ்சிதகன்மம். 2. Actions, செய்தொழில். 3. Evil actions, evil, vice, தீவினை. (See கருமம்.) 4. Fate, destiny, the fruits, retributions, &c., of actions in former births, பிராரத்தகன்மம். Wils. p. 198. KARMMAN. In the Agamas, actions and their effects are of three classes, viz: 1. ஆகாமியம், moral actions, good and evil of the present life, considered as the source of future births with their suffering and enjoyment. 2. சஞ்சிதம், the accumulated actions of the soul in former births, the retributions of which are to be experienced in future transmigrations. 3. பிராரத்தம் or பிராரத்துவம், the enjoyment and sufferings apportioned to the soul in the present state --as the retributions of actions in former births. அவனைக்கொல்லாதேகன்மம்பிடிக்கும். Do not kill him, if you do, the action will seize you. கன்மங்கட்டுப்பட, inf. See கருமங் கட்டுப்பட. கன்மகாண்டம், s. A medical book treating of diseases, as caused by the sins of former births, and the means necessary to remove them, so that medicines may prove effectual, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். கன்மசண்டாளன், s. See கரும சண்டாளன். கன்மசாந்தி, s. A ceremony for the expiation of the evil of former deeds, கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மஞ்செய்தகுடி, s. A family guilty of wicked actions in former births, now made manifest by their sufferings. கன்மத்தியாகம், s. Expiation of the evil of a former birth. கன்மத்துரோகி, s. A wicked wretch, a criminal, சண்டாளன். கன்மநிவர்த்தி--கன்மநிவாரணம், s. See கருமநிவர்த்தி. கன்மந்தொலைய, inf. To become extinct, to be worked or eaten out and terminated--as former evil deeds. கன்மபந்தம், s. [as கருமபந்தம்.] The bond or connexion between the sins of former births and their subsequent punishment. கன்மபரிபாகம், s. Ripening, or expiration of the accumulated merit of the actions of former births, கன்மவொழிவு. கன்மபாதகம், s. A heinous crime. கன்மபாதகன், s. One guilty of some heinous crime, கொடியபாதகன். கன்மபூமி, s. The earth as the theatre of moral actions, or place where virtue and vice are practised, and their respective merit and demerit accumulated, பூலோகம். கன்மம்பிடிக்க, inf. To attend, follow, or pursue--as the guilt of crimes personified. கன்மம்புசிக்க, inf. To experience the good or evil of former actions. கன்மவலை, s. The net of moral actions, கன்மபாசம், i. e. the entanglements of births, or actions and their result, in subsequent transmigrations. கன்மவாதனை, s. See கருமவேதனை. கன்மரோகம்--கன்மவியாதி, s. See கருமவியாதி. கன்மவுடம்பு, s. Bodies assumed, as a result of former deeds, கன்மசரீரம். கன்மாதி, s. Funeral rites, &c., for deceased ancestors, கர்மாதி. கன்மி, s. A heinous sinner, a perpetrator of crimes, கருமி. கன்மேந்திரியம், s. The five organs of action, தொழிற்கருவி. See இந்திரியம். 68)

[in geog.] The equator from its being every where equally distant from the poles. [Modern.] சமசந்தி, s. [prov.] Concord, correspondence, uniformity, இணக்கம். சமசந்திரன்--சமதிங்கள், s. [in astron.] Moon's true longitude at the middle of an eclipse, கிரகணமத்தியகாலத்திற்குச்சந்திர புடம். சமதரிசனம், s. Being evident to, or seen by, persons in common. சாதாரணகாட்சி. 2. The capacity to see and comprehend all things alike; omniscience, சமானகாட்சி. சமதளம், s. A plane, an even surface, a level floor, ஒத்ததரை. 2. An equal army, சரிசேனை. 3. (Rott.) A crowd, a multitude, சனதளம். சமதாளம், s. One of the nine kinds of musical measure. See தாளம். சமநிலை, s. Equilibrium, equipoise, medium, mean, நடுநிலை. 2. [in pros.] Poetry composed of words having a due mixture of hard, soft and medial letters, ஓரலங்காரம். சமநிலைவெண்பா, s. A stanza composed of two குறள்வெண்பா, without an extra connective foot in the middle, சவலைவெண்பா. சமநிறை, s. Equipoise, equilibrium. (c.) சமபந்தி, s. Equality in guests at table, விருந்திற்சரிசமம். சமபலம், s. Equal power, strength, &c., சரிபலம். 2. Equal influence--as of any two or more planets in the horroscope, &c., கிரகங்களின்தொத்தபலன். 3. Equal profit, advantage, utility; middling, moderateness--as the united effects resulting from configuration of the planets. சமபாகம், s. A moiety, an equal share, சரிபங்கு. சமபாரம், s. Equiponderousness, ஒத் தபாரம். (c.) சமபூமி, s. A plain country, level ground. (c.) 2. A field of battle, யுத்த களம். சமபோகம், s. Mutual and simultaneous enjoyment in coition. (p.) சமப்பால், s. Medial soil or tract, that which is neither வன்பால் or மென் பால்; hence, maritime soil or district, நெய்தநிலம். 2. Forest soil or district முல்லைநிலம்; [ex பால், soil.] (திவா.) சமப்பட--சமமாக, inf. To be in, or become reduced to, an equilibrium--as the humours of the body or otherwise. 2. To become tranquil, even, level, &c. சமப்படுத்த, inf. To make even, to equalize, balance, poise, level, tranquillize, moderate. சமமானமனம், s. A composed mind, equanimity. (Little used.) சமமின்மை, s. Partiality, bias, want of mental equilibrium, நடுநிலையின்மை. 2. Inequality. சமமுகம், s. One of the fourteen expressions of the countenance, that of the head erect and fixed--as in contemplation, deep thought, &c., தியானிப் பதுபோற்றலையசைவின்மை. See முகம். சமம்பாவிக்க, inf. [loc.] To attempt a similar act, pursuit, &c--as a rival; to emulate, vie, எதிர்பாவிக்க. சமயுத்தம், s. An equal contest, an engagement in which neither party is victorious. சமரசம், s. Peace, tranquillity, சமா தானம்; [ex சமம், calm, et ரசம், state.] 2. Reconciliation, agreement, the act of reconciling opinions, views. &c., seemingly repugnant, சமாதானஞ்சொல்லல். 3. Equality, ஒப்பு. 4. (Rott.) Fellowship, familiarity, ஐக்கம். (c.) சமரசர், s. Companious, familiar friends. (R.) சமரதம், s. A royal car or chariot of war of the third order, that next above, அத்தரதம், and next below மாரதம். See இரதம். சமரதர், s. Warriors fighting in a சமரதம் car, defending themselves and the army equally. (பார.) சமரவி, s. [in astron.] The sun's true longitude at the middle of an eclipse, கிரகணமத்தியகாலத்துக்குச்சூரியபுடம். சமராத்திரம், s. Equinox, equal night. --Note. The word does not seem to mean the equinoctial points. (Modern.) சமரேகை, s. The equatorial circle or line, as சமசக்கரம். (Modern.) சமவிருஷ்டி--சமவிருட்டி, s. Moderate rain, மத்திபமழை; [ex விருஷ்டி, rain.] சமவிலை, s. A moderate price. சமவணி--சமவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] Similitude, simile, ஓரலங்காரம்.

SAMARTHYA. 4. [prov.] Female puberty, as சாமத்தியம், பக்குவம்; [ex சமர்த்து.] சாமர்த்தியக்கலியாணம், s. [loc.] The second or consummatory marriage ceremony; (provincially,) the ceremony performed on the first appearance of the menses. See இருதுசாந்தி. சாமர்த்தியங்காட்ட, inf. To show one's skill--as சமத்துக்காட்ட. சாமர்த்தியமாக, inf. [prov.] To arrive at puberty, as a girl, பக்குவப்பட. சாமர்த்தியமாகப்பண்ண, inf. To perform a skilful act, to display dexterity. சாமர்த்தியவான்--சாமர்த்தியன், s. A competent, skilful person, as சமத்தன். சாமர்த்தியகுணம், s. See ஈசுரன்பிரபுத் துவம். 32) *
