aṭṭam (p. 9) --அஷ்டம், s. Eight, எட்டு. (p.) Wils. p. 92. ASHTAN. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of feet with which the invocation of a poem may begin; four indicative of good, and four of evil. See கணம். அஷ்டகம், s. A collection or series of eight things, எட்டின்கூட்டம். 2. A Sanscrit poem, every eight stanzas of which are of the same kind of verse, வடமொழியினோர்பிரபந்தம். Wils. p. 91. ASHTAKA. அஷ்டகருமம், s. The eight super-human powers, எண்வ கைச்சித்தி. See சித்தி. அஷ்டசுபம்--அஷ்டமங்கலம், s. The eight auspicious objects, to meet which is thought a favorable omen. See மங்கலம். அஷ்டதந்திரவாதம், s. One of the eighty disorders from flatulency, combining eight bad symptoms. அஷ்டதனம், s. The eight special advantages; viz. 1. ரூபம், beauty. 2. சம்பத்து, acquisitions. 3. வித்தை, skill. 4. விவேகம், wit, ingenuity. 5. குணம், good disposition. 6. தனம், gold. 7. நல் லகுலம், good caste. 8. வயது, age. அஷ்டதானபரீட்சை, s. The eight symptoms of disease. See பரீட்சை. அஷ்டதிக்கயம், s. The eight elephants of the cardinal points, எட்டுத்திசை யானை. See திக்கயம். அஷ்டதிக்குப்பாலகர், s. The regents of the eight cardinal points, எண் டிசைப்பாலகர். See திக்குப்பாலகர். அஷ்டநாகம்--அஷ்டமாநாகம், s. The eight serpents, எண்வகைநாகம். See நாகம். அஷ்டபந்தனம், s. One of the eight forms of puja. 2. Binding the cardinal points by incantations, &c. See திக்குக்கட்டு. அஷ்டபந்தனஞ்சாத்த, inf. To put a mixture of wax, resin, vermilion, frankincense, butter, &c., in the niche around a stone idol. அஷ்டபோகம், s. The eight species of enjoyment. See போகம். அஷ்டப்பிரமாணம், s. The eight laws of evidence. See பிரமாணம். அஷ்டமணம், s. The eight kinds of marriage. See மணம். அஷ்டமச்சனி--அஷ்டமத்துச்சனி, s. Saturn situated in the eighth sign from that of one's birth, when his influence is deemed the most malignant, எட்டாமிடத்துச்சனி. அஷ்டமாந்தம், s. The eight kinds of disease in children. See மாந்தம். அஷ்டமி, s. The eighth day of the moon, either waxing or waning, எட் டாந்திதி. 2. The eighth of any series or number, எட்டாவது. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம், s. The eight forms assumed by Siva, spiritual and natural, regarded as his bodies. அஷ்டமூர்த்தி, s. Siva, சிவன். See the preceding. அஷ்டமூலம், s. The eight medicinal roots. See மூலம். அஷ்டமெய்ப்பரிசம்--அட்டமெய் ப்பரிசம், s. The eight sensations of the body. See மெய்ப்பரிசம். அஷ்டயோகம்--அஷ்டாங்கயோ கம், s. The eight things to be observed by a Yogi. See யோகம். அஷ்டலட்சணம், s. The eight attributes of God. See குணம். அஷ்டலட்சுமி, s. The goddess of fortune, or patroness of wordly things, எண்வகையிலக்குமி, viz. 1. தனலட்சுமி, patroness of riches. 2. தானியலட்சுமி, patroness of grain. 3. தைரியலட்சுமி, patroness of boldness. 4. சௌரியலட்சுமி, patroness of bravery. 5. வித்தியாலட்சுமி, patroness of science. 6. கீர்த்திலட்சுமி, partroness of fame. 7. விசயலட்சுமி, patroness of victory. 8. இராச்சியலட்சுமி, patroness of kingdoms. அஷ்டலோகபஸ்பம், s. A medicine composed of eight metals: 1. பொன், gold. 2. வெள்ளி, silver. 3. செம்பு, copper. 4. இரும்பு, iron. 5. வெண்கலம், white copper. 6. தரா, brass. 7. வங்கம், lead. 8. துத்தநாகம், zinc, with different salts and vegetable juices; the whole prepared by fire and reduced to powder to be used in various diseases. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், s. The eight வ சுக்கள், a class of தேவர் or gods. See வசுக்கள். அஷ்டவணிககுணம், s. The eight qualities of a good tradesman. See வ ணிககுணம். அஷ்டவருக்கம், s. The eight things used for medicines. 1. சீரகம், cumin, 2. கருஞ்சீரகம், black cumin. 3. சுக்கு, dry ginger. 4. மிளகு, pepper. 5. திப்பிலி, long pepper. 6. இந்துப்பு, rock salt. 7. பெருங்காயம், assaf&oe;tida. 8. ஓ மம்--அசமதாகம், the omum seed. 2. The eight astrological divisions of the rising sign at the time of one's birth. அஷ்டவருக்கு, s. Impr. for அஷ் டவருக்கம் in the latter meaning. அஷ்டவிகாரம், s. The eight evil dispositions of men. See விகாரம். அஷ்டவூறு, s. The eight perceptions of the senses. See ஊறு. அஷ்டவெச்சம், s. The eight natural defects of the body. See எச்சம். அஷ்டவெற்றி, s. The eight kinds of conquest. See புறத்திணை. அஷ்டவெற்றிமாலை, s. The eight kinds of wreaths with which conquerors were crowned. See வெற்றிமாலை. அஷ்டாங்கம், s. The eight parts of the body, viz., the feet, hands, shoulders, forehead, breast. அஷ்டாங்கநமஸ்காரம், s. Worship with the eight members of the body, the feet, hands, shoulders, breast and forehead, கால்கள், கைகள், தோள்கள், மார்பு, நெற்றி என்னும் எண்வகையுறுப்புக்களினாற் செய்யும் வணக்கம். அஷ்டாங்கநிலந்தோய்தல், v. noun. அமூர்த்தம்
amūrttam (p. 20) s. [priv. அ.] That which is formless, shapeless, unembodied, incorporeal, உருவில்லது. Wils. p. 61. AMURTTA. அமூர்த்தன்--அமூர்த்தி, s. An incorporeal or immaterial being, as the deity or the soul in the கேவலம் state. அமூர்த்திசாதாக்கியம், s. One of the immaterial benevolent states of Siva, சிவனதிரட்சண்ணியவுருவத்தினொன்று. 32) *
குரு
kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். See வருடம். குருநாள், s. The eighth lunar asterism, பூசம். குருநாடிவிதி, s. A treatise on the ten tubular vessels in the system, and for the ascertainment of diseases by feeling the pulse, நாடிச்சாத்திரம். குருபாலப்பிரபோதிகை, s. One of the commentaries on the Sanscrit Amara Cosha. குருநோய்--குருவியாதி, s. The smallpox, வசூரி. குருபுறப்பட-குருக்காண-குருவார்க்க, inf. To take the small-pox. குருப்பிக்க, inf. v. n. [prov.] To shoot forth; to break out--as pimples, &c. குருமுகறன்--குருமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] One whose face in pock-pitted. குருவண்டு--குருப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of spotted wasp, ஓர்குளவி. குருவெறும்பு, s. A kind of large, red ant. See எறும்பு. குருவேர், s. A plant, the roots of which are very fragrant, ஓர்செடியின்வேர். 24)
தட்சணம்
taṭcaṇam (p. 222) --தக்ஷிணம், s. South, southward, தெற்கு. 2. Right, right hand. வலப்பக்கம். (Sa. Dakshin'a.) (See தக்கணம்.) 3. The same moment. See க்ஷணம். தட்சணகௌளி, s. A lizard to the south of one, the chirping of which is auspicious. தட்சணாக்கினி-தக்கணாக்கினி, s. The fire kindled by the brahmans in the sacrifice towards the south; called also வேதாக்கினி. தட்சணாஸ்தம், s. (St.) The right side; [ex அஸ்தம்.] தட்சணாமூர்த்தம், s. The posture of Siva teaching the four sons of Brahma, seated with his face to the south, under the shade of a banyan, குருமூர்த்தம். தட்சணாமூர்த்தி, s. A name of Siva, சிவன். 2. Agastya, as dwelling in mount Pothiyam at the south, அகஸ்தி யன். (சித்தர்பாடல்.) தட்சணாயனாந்தம், s. The southern solstice. 25) *
தாலி
tāli (p. 234) s. The marriage badge tied on the neck of the bride, by the bridegroom, at the time of the wedding; and worn like a wedding ring, and an suspicious ornament, மாங்கல்லியம். (c.) தாலிப்பிச்சைக்கேட்க. The ask the boon of the wedding badge; i. e. for a wife, to plead for the life of her husband. தாலியறுப்பாய். Thou wilt lose thy wedding badge. (a curse.) தாலியைக்கட்டுவாய், Thou wilt fasten on another wedding badge be i. e. thou wilt lose thy wife. [prov.] அவளுடையதாலியிருப்புத்தாலியாயிருக்கவேண்டும். May her wedding badge be iron; i. e. enduring, may her husband live long. தாலிகட்டு, v. noun. Investing the bride with the wedding badge, on day of marriage. தாலிகட்டுமூர்த்தம். The auspicious hour for putting on the marriage badge. தாலிக்கயிறு, s. A twisted thread for the தாலி. தாலிக்குபொன்னுருக்க, inf. To melt gold for the wedding badge on an auspicious day. தாலிக்கோவை, s. A string of beads to which the marriage badge is attached. தாலிச்சரடு, s. [[prov.] தாலிக்கொடி.] A braided gold wire for the marriage badge. (c.) தாலிபெருக்கிக்கட்டுதல், v. noun. Appending beads with the marriage badge, accompanied with certain ceremonies-regarded as auspicious. தாலிப்பொருத்தம், s. [in astrol.] Such an agreement in the configuration of the heavenly bodies, in the horoscope of the two persons to be united, as is deemed propitious for the marriage; and the investiture of the bride with the தாலி. --Note. If the தாலிபொருத்தம் be unpropitious, the parties do not come together; the wedding is deferred. It is one of the தசப்பொருத்தம். தாலியறுக்க, inf. To tear off the wedding token at the husband's death. தாலியறுத்தவள், appel. n. A widow. one who has torn off the marriage badge. தாலியுரு, s. [loc.] Beads of different forms attached to the marriage badge. பொட்டுத்தாலி, s. A marriage badge made of a flat piece of metal. 65) *

mūrttam (p. 361) s. A division of time, two Hindu hours, இருகடிகைப்போழ்து. 2. [vul.] One-thirtieth of a natural day, or fortyeight minutes. 3. [in astrol.] A propitious time. See முகூர்த்தம். 4. That which has form, figure, shape, or body. See மூர்த்தி. 5. The head, தலை. W. p. 668. MOORDDHAN. அஷ்டமூர்த்தம் or மூர்த்தம், 8. The eight forms assumed by Siva in manifesting his nature and perfections: 1. பூமி, the earth; 2. நீர், water; 3. தேயு, fire; 4. வாயு, wind; 5. ஆகாயம், air; [These five are also called, பஞ்சபூதம், five elements.] 6. சூரியன், The sun; 7. சந்தி ரன், the moon; 8. ஆன்மா, the soul. 67) *

Interrogation, a query, a problem. வினா, 5., There are according to சது. five special categories, in questioning; 1. அறியான்வினாவல், asking what one does not know; 2. அறிவொப்புக்காண்டல், seeking to learn whether another's knowledge agrees with one's own; 3. ஐயமறுத்தல், clearing up of doubts; 4. அவனறிவுதரன் கோடல், learning what the other knows; 5. மெய்யவற்குக்காட்டல், discovering the truth.--According to Nannul these are அறிவினா, அறயாவினா,ஐயவினா, கொளல்வினா, கொ டுத்தல்வினா, ஏவும்வினா. வினாக்குறிப்பு, s. [in gram.] An interrogative pronoun, especially, எவன் and ஆர். வினாப்பெயர், s. An interrogative pronoun. வினாவறிபருவம், s.
