iḷi (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To grin, show the teeth--as in cringing, craving, &c., பல்லிளிக்க. 2. To laugh in a silly manner, to simper, giggle, களகளவெனச்சிரிக்க. 3. v. a. To ridicule, scorn, deride, பரிகாசஞ்செய்ய. 4. To disgrace, contemn, அவமதிக்க. (c.) இளித்தவாய்ப்பட்டம், s. Notoriety for grinning, இளிச்சவாயனெனப்படுகை. 2. The character of a sauntering idler. 3. The state or character of one baffled or defeated in his projects. குரங்குபோலிளித்தவாயன். One who grins like a monkey. பல்லையிளிக்க, inf. To laugh foolishly. இளிச்சற்கண், s. Blear eyes, eyes sore with rheum. இளிப்பு--இளிவு, v. noun. Grinning, simpering, tittering, பல்லிளிக்கை. 2. Ridicule, scorn, derision, இழிவு. 3. Disgrace, நிந்தை. நாயையடித்துப்பல்லிளிவுபார்க்கிறதினாலேயென் ன? What will it avail to strike a dog and then look at its grin? [prov.] எள்ளினிளிவாமென்றெண்ணி. Considering that it would be disrespectful to neglect him. (குறள்.) 8)

kiñcitam (p. 108) --கிஞ்சித்து, s. An atom, a particle; a small quality, கொஞ்சம். 2. Any thing narrow, limited and mean, smallness, சிறுமை. Wils. p. 221. KANCHIT. கிஞ்சித்தாகப்பேச, s. To speak to one's discredit, commonly as to moral character--whether true or untrue. கிஞ்சித்துவம், s. Limitedness, diminution of the powers of a divinity on his assumption of a form, or character, for any specific purpose, சிறுமை. (p.) கிஞ்சித்துதூரம்போக, inf. To deride, to mock, to redicule. 2. To joke, to jest. 3. To play the baffoon, to mimic. 4. To confound, shame, baffle, asperse, defame. கேலித்தனம், s. cḷpuḷkk (p. 173) --சளபுளென, inf. [prov.] To gurgle--as water. 2. To sound as the bubbling of water when boiling rice, the water being low. 3. To splash--as wet ground or moist boiled rice when stirred with a ladle. 4. To be disconcerted, abashed or baffled. 5. To be reduced in power, prosperity, &c.--Note. These meanings are not perhaps general; they arise from the sound of the word, ஒலிக்குறி ப்பு. 24)

To curb, to limit, to restrain, to restrict, அடக்க. 7. To oppose, to contradict, to interdict; to rebut, to repel, எதிர்க்க. 8. To frustrate, to thwart, குலைக்க. 9. To adjure, to hinter by oath, ஆணையிட. 1. To resist, to withstand, மறுக்க. 11. To forbid, as an ill omen, தவிர்க்க. 12. To dissuade, மறிக்க. 13. To hinder by magic, as the catching of birds, fishes, &c., or hitting a mark, மந்திரத்தாற் றடுக்க. 14. To detain, தாமதப்படுத்த. 15. To staunch blood, &c., இரத்தந்தடுக்க. (c.) தடுத்துமேலுமிவ்வுருவமாயினும்பெறல்சற்றல். To put off, and then obtain this body again is not easy. (வயிரா.) கால்தடுக்கிவிழுந்தான். He tripped and fell. தடுக்கல், v. noun. A stumbling block; an impediment. தடுக்கிநிற்க, inf. To stop in a course. தடுத்தாட்கொள்ள, inf. To hinder in a bad course and reclaim; to reform; commonly used in prayer. தடுத்தாள, inf. To check a soul in its evil tendencies, as, to transmigration, &c., and bring it to bliss; to overrule, as divine grace, for the benefit of the soul. தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To contradict, to retort, to refuse. தடுத்துப்போட, inf. To hinder, to resist. 2. To make a partition wall. தடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To put off, to postpone; to interdict. தடுபடை, s. A defensive weapon. [with dative.] To be at fault, to fail, as the hand playing on an instrument, writing, performing an operation, &c., or the tongue in reading or speaking, &c., தவற. 31. To hobble as a verse, தலைகாட்ட.--Note. The meanings are often cant. அனேகரைக்காய்ச்சல்தட்டிப்போட்டது. The fever has prostrated many persons. தண்ணீர்தலைதட்டநிற்கிறது. The water is head deep. [prov.] தலையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டது. It has carried off his head. தேடியபொருள்காலிலேதட்டினதுபோல. As if the thing sought for, had struck against the foot; i. e. getting accidentally the thing desired. நெஞ்சிலேதட்டிப்பார். Knock at your own breast, and inquire. பல்லைத்தட்டிவிடு. Knock out his teeth. மரங்கள் தெருத்தட்டநிற்கின்றன. The trees extend the whole length of the street. [prov.] தொண்டைக்குள்ளேஏதோதட்டுகிறது. There is something in my throat obstructing the passage. அவன்என்வார்த்தையைத்தட்டிப்போட்டான். He has disobeyed me. மழைதட்டிப்போயிற்று. Rain is deficient. அரிசித்தட்டிப்போயிற்று. The rice is nearly exhausted; or rice is very dear and scarce. தட்டாமல்முட்டாமல் விழுங்கிப்போட்டான். He has swallowed it (his large income) without difficulty. [prov.] தட்டாமல்வைக்க, inf. To place things so as not to touch each other. தட்டவைக்கப்பார்க்க--தட்டவைக்கநி னைக்க, inf. To put one on a wrong scent when in pursuit of another. தட்டிக்கிளம்ப--தட்டியெழும்ப, inf. To rice grow high, or tall. 2. To rise to affluence, influence, &c. 3. To be animated with joy, or zeal for an enterprize; to be roused with anger. தட்டிக்கேட்க, inf. To speak or remonstrate. தட்டிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To quiet, to lull by tapping. 2. To cheer, to encourage men or beasts by patting on the back, shoulders, &c. 3. [in prison bars.] To tap a person so that another may grasp him. தட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To be exhausted, to be in want. 2. To strike against, to be resisted, by an obstacle. 3. To be retarded in reading, speaking, or business. 4. To fail, to prove inadequate. 5. To shake off the dust by striking the foot upon the ground. மேலேதட்டிக்கொள்ளாதே. Don't come in contact with me--said by one afraid of defilement. கப்பல்நிலந்தட்டிக்கொண்டது. The ship is aground, striking, &c. தட்டிச்சொல்ல, inf. To contradict. 2. [prov.] To speak, or repeat a lesson with hesitation; to stammer. தட்டிப்பறிக்க, inf. To strike and snatch away. 2. To get by stratagem. தட்டிப்பறைசாற்ற, inf. To publish by beat of drum. 2. To blab out private matters, to asperse one's character. தட்டிப்பார்க்க, inf. To try to fish out secrets from one. 2. To sit one's erudition, caste, property, &c. 3. nōṭṭm (p. 285) s. Scrutiny, examination of coins, gems, precious metals, or wares with discernment of their value, பணநோட் டம். 2. Survey, review, criticism--as by a rival artist, workman, கணிப்பு. 3. Attempt at wit; endeavour to excel, to hinder or baffle another in speech, வெல்லமுயலுகை. நோட்டதிலேவிலைவைத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have competed in the price. வார்த்தைநோட்டத்திலென்னபலன். What will it avail to baffle one another in speech? அதின்நோட்டமறியான். He does note know its value. நோட்டக்காரன், s. One expert in inspecting coins. 2. A shroff. நோட்டம்பார்க்க, inf.
