uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. To give advice, persuade clandestinely, to teach one to act with duplicity, புத்திசொல்ல. 6. To utter incantations, to consecrate, மந்திரமுரைக்க. ஓதாதார்க்கில்லையுணர்வுடனொழுக்கம். Knowledge and good manners are not to be found in unlearned men. ஓதாமலொருநாளுமிருக்கவேண்டாம். Employ your whole time in the pursuit of knowledge. ஓதுவதொழியேல். Cease not to learn. (ஔ வை.) எண்ணெயோதிக்கொடுக்கிறது. To administer holy oil to women in labor. காதிலேயோதிவிட்டான். He has given him secret advice, he has prevailed on him by underhand or secret means. நூறுநாளோதியாறுநாள்விடத்தீரும். The traces of learning made in a hundred days will be effaced by indolence in six. ஓதியிறைக்க, inf. To sprinkle holy water. ஓதியுடைக்க, inf. To break a cocoanut with appropriate incantations. ஓதிவிட, inf. To cease reading. ஓதினநீர், s. Holy water, consecrated water. ஓதுவான், s. A teacher of the vedas, and other sacred literature, ஆசா ன். 2. A learner, a scholar, a student, படிப்பவன். 3. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. To teach science, instruct, படிப்பிக்க. ஓதல், v. noun. Reciting the vedas, &c. 2. Reading. 3. Learning, speaking. ஓதலினன்றேவேதியர்க்கொழுக்கம். Good manners in a brahman are preferable to the recitation of the vedas. ஓதற்றொழிலுரித்துயர்ந்தோர்மூவர்க்கும். The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. [impr. கணைக் காய்ச்சல்.] A kind of lingering fever in children. 48) *

kmpṉ (p. 96) s. A poet, the author of the Ramayana, ஓர்புலவன். கம்பன்வீட்டுக்கட்டுத்தறியுங்கவிபாடும். Even the stake in the cowstall of Kampen the poet knows how to compose verses; i. e. the example of conspicuous men has a tendency to influence the character of their dependents. 8)

The family is thriving or flourishing. குடிகனத்தவூர், s. A populous village, a densely-inhabited town. குடிகுலத்திலுள்ளவன், s. A person of good caste, family, &c. குடிகெடுதல், v. noun. Being ruined, undone or destroyed. குடிகெடுக்க--குடியைக்கெடுக்க, inf. TO destroy or ruin a family. குடிகேடன்--குடிகேடி, s. One who ruins a family. 2. the ruiner of a family, being one of the number. குடிகேடு, s. Ruin to a family; an unavoidable ruin. குடிகொள்ள, inf. To inhabit, dwell; to take possession of the mind--as a deity or devil; or of a house--as a demon; also--as bats, snakes, &c.; to be seated or eatablished--as a lingering or chronic disease. என்னுளங்குடிகொண்டகுலதெய்வமே. Militia. குடிப்பழுது, s. Stigma on a family, disgrace, disrepute. குடிப்பாங்கு, s. The habits of a cultivator, or an agriculturist. குடிப்பிறப்பு, s. High birth; being born of a distinguished family. குடிப்பெண், s. The lawful wife--as distinguished from a concubine. குடிப்பெயர், s. Family name. 2. [in gram.] Nouns of family names--as in ஊர்கிழான். குடிமகன், s. A feudatory, or a man of the servile tribe in relation to the families (குடி) of superior caste, to which under certain restrictions he is subject. The connexion is commonly hereditary. 2. A barber, அம்பட்டன். குடிமக்கள், s. Servile castes in relation to their feudal chiefs, eighteen in number: 1. வண்ணான், washerman. 2. நாவி தன், barber. 3. குயவன், potter. 4. தட்டான், gold or silver-smith. 5. கன்னான், brazier. 6. கற்றச்சன், mason. 7. கொல்லன், blacksmith. 8. தச்சன், carpenter. 9. எண்ணெ ய்வாணிகன், oil-monger. 1. உப்புவாணிகன், salt-dealer. 11. இலைவாணிகன், betel-seller. 12. பள்ளி. 13. பூமாலைக்காரன், garlandmaker. 14. Grave-digger, commonly a பறையன். 15. கோவிற்குடியான், [prop.] பணி செய்வோன், chank-blower. 16. ஒச்சன், pujari at a temple of பிடாரி. 17. வலையன், fisherman. 18. பாணன், tailor. The special servants in the above are the barber, washerman, black-smith, carpenter and grave-digger. குடிமதிப்பு, s. Assessment, valuation of property for taxation. குடிமார்க்கம்--குடிமுறை, s. Domestic life. 2. Proper conduct as a householder. குடிமிராசி--குடிமிராசு, s. The right or privilege of a hereditary occupant. குடிமிராசிகொடுக்க, inf. To endue with particular மிராசு privileges. குடிமை, s. Customs or manners of the higher classes, மேற்குலத்தார்நடக்கை. 2. Lineage, family, descent. குடிவரலாறு. 3. Vassalage, servitude, feudal dependence, feudal right or cunnexion; a feudatory in reference to his chief. (See குடிமக்கள்.) --Note. The chief is entitled to the service of his feudatory whenever required, and the latter to a proportion of the produce of the land, to perquisites at weddings, funerals, &c. 4. An inhabitant; emphatically a caste man, one not of a low caste. குடியியல்பு, s. Domestic life, family management. 2. Domestic order, domestic rules of management. குடியிருப்பு, s. Living--as a family, or an inhabitant; residing, குடியிருக்கை. 2. An inhabited, settled, or populated place, a village, கிராமம். 3. The parts of a village inhabited by different castes respectively. The name of the caste is commonly prefixed --as செட்டிகுடியிருப்பு, a chitties' village. குடியிறங்க, inf. To settle, tarry or halt --as a family or a tribe. குடியிற்பிறந்தவன், s. One born of a good family. குடியிற்பிறந்து குரங்காட்டமாடுதல். Being born of a good family, and falling into disgrace by bad conduct. குடியிற்பிறந்து செடியில்விழுந்தான். He was born of a good family, but married low; lit. fell into the bush. குடியெழும்ப, inf. To evacuate a house, village, &c., commonly from some unlucky and disastrous event, or anticipation. குடிவாங்க--குடிவாங்கிப்போக, inf. To remove from a place--as a family; to abandon a dwelling. 2. To migrate, to emigrate--as a family. குடியேற, inf. To settle in a new country, to colonize, to people. குடியேற்ற, inf. v. a. To settle people in a country, to stock with inhabitants, to people, to populate. குடிவாழ்க்கை, v. noun. Domestic economy, house-keeping. 2. Regulation of a household. குடிவிளங்கப்பண்ண, inf. To render a family illustrious' and prosperous. குடிவைக்க-குடியிருத்த, inf. To settle or establish a family. 2. To provide a family with the means of sustenance. சிறந்தகுடி, s. A family in prosperous circumstances. சுகவாசிக்குடி, s. A tenant; a renter or cultivator--as distinguished from மூரிக் குடி. See மூரிக்குடி. நல்லகுடி, s. A good or well-ordered family. 2.
