iḷku (p. 55) கிறது, இளகினது, ம், இளக, v. n. [prov.] To relax, abate, become pliable, flexible, to lessen in intensity or severity--as wind, rain, sun-shine, fever, &c., தணிய. 2. To become tender, indulgent, mild, yielding, placable, to relax in ardor, application, &c., நெகிழ. 3. To grow moist --as goods, &c. in rainy weather, to soften--as heated iron or other metals, to dissolve a little, be reduced in hardness, &c., to deliquesce, soak through--as tiles, கரைய. 4. To become relaxed--as a bowstring, to become loose--as screws, &c., தளர. இளகாதவன், s. A hard-hearted, inexorable person. இளகிக்காண, inf. To become limber, soft, loose, pliant, lubricous, &c., நெகிழ. 2. To appear less strict, rigid, &c.--as the mind; to become less tense. இளகினபொன், s. Soft or pure gold that easily melts, &c., the prefix is alike applicable to other metals. இளகினமனசு, s. A feeling, kind heart. 49)

Of what utility in this sea-girt land is an hermaphrodite, whom no panegyrist has ever celebrated, and who has not obtained the praises of the multitude, nor sought fame by charitably aiding the indigent to marry? ஏ ஏகத்துக்குமூந்நூறு. Making a wry face through discontent, dissatisfaction, umbrage, sorrow, &c. சொற்கோட்டமில்லதுசெப்பமொருதலையாவுட்கோ ட்டமின்மைபெறின். Freedom from obliquity of speech is rectitude, if there be a (corresponding) freedom from bias of mind. (குற.) முகக்கோட்டம், v. noun. A sad, dejected countenance. 2. A look of reluctance or unwillingness. 15)

kōṇu (p. 150) கிறது, கோணினது, ம், கோண, v. n. (Sa. Kon'a, crooked.) To be crooked, bent, curved, angular, serpentine, வளைய. 2. To be or become awry, oblique, aslant, askant, கோணலாயிருக்க. (c.) 3. To deviate, diverge, or turn out of the proper course, நெறிபிறழ. 4. To be warped or discouraged in mind; to be changed--as circumstances, மாறுபட. முதற்கோணினால் முற்றுங்கோணும். If the beginning goes wrong, all will be wrong. This is superstitiously believed. கோணிக்கோணிகொடுப்பதிலுங் கோணாமற்காணி கொடுப்பதுஉத்தமம். It is better to give a little (காணி) with a good will than much (கோணி) with reluctance. கோணக்கோணஇழுக்க, inf. To distort the limbs, features, &c., as cramps, convulsion, &c. கோணிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give unwillingly. (c.) முகத்தைக்கோணவைக்க, inf. To avert the countenance. 2. To make a wry face. முகங்கோண, inf. To look sour, harsh. கோணல், v. noun. To humble or to abase one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தல், v. noun. Praising one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தலுந்தகும்புலவோர்க்கே. It becomes a poet to praise himself. தன்னையறிதல், v. noun. A girl becoming marriageable, பருவம்வாய்புறல். 2. Knowing one's self; i. e. knowing the power of the soul--as the ascetic, ஆ ன்மநிலையையுணர்தல். தன்னையறியாதசன்னதமில்லை. There is no want of self-possession; spoken of one supposed to be possessed by an evil spirit, yet retaining his conning. தன்னையறிந்தவன்தலைவனைஅறிவான். He who knows himself will know God. தன்னைமறந்தவன், appel. n. A selfrenouncing person, as an ascetic or a ஞானி. தன்னைமறுத்தல், v. noun. Self-denial. தன்னைவாட்டுதல்--தன்னையொறுத்தல், v. noun. Mortifying one's self. தன்னைவியக்க, inf. To admire one's self. தன்னொழுக்கம், s. Conduct suitable to one's age, rank, caste, religion, தன்னிலைக் குத்தக்கநடை. 51)

A சாரியை or emphatic particle suffixed to plural pronouns of any person, as அவர் தாம்வந்தார், he came. 4. An அசைநிலை, expletive, வருவர்தாம், they will come, they will indeed come. 5. One of the syllable sung to tunes instead of words. (See தா ளம், and சுரம்.)--Note. As a சாரியை, it is an affix to nouns, and, in the oblique cases, it takes the change of case instead of the noun. 11)

[in gram.] The connexion of a word with its பயனிலை, or that with which it makes sense, without ellipsis, contraction, &c., வினை உருபுமுதலியவிரிந்துநிற்றல்--It embraces nine varieties; 1. முற்று. finite verbs with their nominatives, as வந் தான்சாத்தன். Sattan came. 2. பெயரெச்சம், relative participle, and its noun, as வந்தசாத்தன், Sattan who came. 3. வினை யெச்சம், verbal participle with their finite verb, &c., as வந்துபோனான், he came and returned. 4. எழுவாய், the nominative and its verb, as சாத்தன்வந்தான்.
