The six தொழில், or actions, appropriate to the holy land, or India proper, are: 1. உழவு. ploughing, tillage. 2. தொழில், workmanship, manufacture. 3. வரைவு, marriage, with appropriate ceremonies. 4. வா ணிகம், traffic. 5. வீச்சை, வித்தை. arts, science, literature. 6. சிற்பம். architecture. The six தொழில் or duties and occupations appropriate to the four castes are: 1. To அந்தணர், brahmans: 1. ஓதல், study and recitation of the Vedas. 2. ஓதுவித்தல், teaching the Veda. 3. வேட்டல், performing daily and special rites tending the sacred fire. &c. 4. வேட்பித்தல், managing the performance of rites for others, &c. 5. ஈதல், distributing alms, supporting religious mendicants. 6. ஏற்றல், receiving alms, and donations from worthy persons. II. To அரசர், the royal or military race: 1. ஓதல், studying. 2. வேட்டல், performing rites. 3. ஈதல், bestowing alms, and donations. 4. உலகோம்பல், cherishing, protecting, governing the land. 5. படைப்பயிற்றல், training or disciplining armies. 6. பொருதல், carrying on war. III. To வைசியர், or cultivators, marchants and herdsmen: 1. ஓதல், study, 2. வேட்டல், performing rites. 3. பொருளீட் டல், acquiring wealth. 4. ஈதல், bestowing alms. 5. பசுக்காத்தல், keeping cows. 6. ஏரு ழல், agriculture. IV. சூத்திரர், servile castes: 1. முதன்மூவர்க்கேவல்செய்தல், serving the first three castes. 2. பொருளீட்டல், acquiring wealth. 3. உழுதல், tillage. 4. பசுக்காத்தல், keeping cows. 5. குயிலூவத்தொழில்செய்தல், playind on stringed and wind instruments 6. காருகவினைகளாக்கல், weaving cotton and silk, bearing burdens, and other drudgery.
