இயற்கை
iyṟkai (p. 48) s. Nature, quality, disposition, inherent or primitive quality, சுபா வம். 2. Ability, influence, power, திராணி. 3. Custom, habit, practice, what is natural, customary, &c., வழக்கம். 4. State, condition, circumstances, தன்மை. 5. [prov.] Means, instruments, tools, பணிமுட்டு.-Note. This word is opposed to செயற்கை, artificial productions. இயற்கைக்குணம், s. The natural disposition, natural temper. இயற்கைஞானம்--இயற்கையறிவு, s. Natural, inherent or intuitive wisdom--as a property of the Deity. இயற்கைதப்பினவன், s. A dishonest person. இயற்கைப்புணர்ச்சி, s. [in love poetry.] Marriage indicated by destiny, arising from previous actions and by natural choice and inclination, தலைவனுந் தலைவியுந்தம்முளொத்துப்புணர்கை. இயற்கைப்பொருள், s. To improve, to make better, to correct, to reform, to restore to a good state, to health, &c.; to remedy, சீர்திருத்த. 2. To convert, மனந்திரும்பச்செய்ய. குணப்பட்டவன், s. [in Christian usage.] One who has repented; a convert. குணப்பண்பு, s. [in gram.] Sensible qualities of objects--as bitterness, whiteness--as distinguished from குறிப்புப்பண்பு, ideal quality, and தொழிற்பண்பு, acting quality. See பண்பு. குணப்பிழை, s. Ill nature, bad temper or disposition, குணக்கேடு. 2. Ill success, பயனின்மை. 3. Unfavorable signs in disease, &c., அசாத்தியம். குணப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities; abstract nouns; denotative nouns signifying attributes only--as கரு மை, அழகு--opposed to குணிப்பெயர்; பண்புப் பெயர். 2. Names either concrete or connotating, derived from abstractnouns --as கரியன், அழகன். குணமணி, s. One of an excellent disposition. குணமறிய, inf. To know one's disposition. 2. To understand or ascertain the symptoms of a disease. குணமாக்க, inf. v. a. To cure, heal; to restore to health. 2. To reform, to amend, to correct. குணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be whole, well, sound; to be well-conditional. 2. To be gratifying, pleasing, palatable. குணம்மாற, inf. To change--as temper, disposition, character, symptoms, either for the better or worse. குணமுங்குற்றமும், s. Good and bad, virtues and vices, beauties and defects, commendation and censure, &c. குணமுடையவன்--குணமுள்ளவன், s. A kind-hearted, good-natured, generous man. 2. A well-bred man. குணமுற்றவன், s. A good-natured man. குணமுற்றவன் மணமுற்றவன்; குணமற்றவன் மண மற்றவன். A good-natured man will be praised; but an ill-natured man, despised. குணரத்தினாகரன், s. One whose benevolence is like the sea; [ex இரத்தினாகரம்.] குணவதி, s. A very good natured person. Wils. p. 292. GUN'AVATI. குணவந்தன்--குணவான், s. A well-disposed person; one of a good disposition. குணவவநுதி, s. [in rhet.] A kind of அவநூதி figure, in which a prorperty or quality universally predicated of an object is apparently denied, by affirming the opposite, either ironically or ambiguously. குணவாகடம்--குணபாடல், s. A treatise on the signs and symptoms of diseases, ஓர்வைத்தியநூல். குணவாகுபெயர், s. [in gram.] Names of qualities or attributes, used by metonymy for objects possessing those qualities or attributes--as in நீலஞ்சூடினாள். குணவாக்கு, s. Peculiar temper or habit. குணவிலக்கு, s. [in rhet.] Negation of a property or quality in a person or thing from the presence of its opposite, ஓரலங்காரம். குணவுவமம்--குணவுவமை, s. [in rhet.] A species of simile; similitude, of qualities and properties. See பண்புவமை. குணன், s. A man of good qualities, generally found in compounds--as in அறுகுணன், சற்குணன். குணாதீதம், s. Freedom from all properties, குணங்கடந்துநிற்கை. குணாதீதன், s. God, He who is above all attributes; He whose attributes and perfections transcend our comprehension, கடவுள். Wils. p. 292. GUN'ATEE'TA. குணாலயன், s. The deity--as the seat and source of all perfections, கடவுள். இனியகுணம், s. A pleasant temper or disposition. நிர்க்குணன், s. The deity--as void of all properties, கடவுள். Wils. p. 474. NIRGUN'A. சத்துவகுணம், s. The first of the three principles, or properties in nature. 2. Nobleness of mind; magnanimity. 3. The exalted disposition of an ascetic's mind by which he disdains worldly delights, greatness, honors, &c. சற்குணம்--சுகுணம்--நற்குணம், s. A good disposition, kindness, benevolence, virtue. சற்குணன்--சற்குணி, s. A virtuous person; a good-natured person. சாத்தியகுணம், s. [in medi.] The condition or state of being curable; favorable symptoms; hopeful case. குணி, s. One endowed with good qualities, a good-tempered person, நற்குண முடையான். 2. [in gram.] A subject, any thing which possesses attributes or qualities--as distinguished from குணம், also, the names of such things, பண்பி. 3. [ex குணம், bow-string.] A bow, வில். (சது.) குணிப்பெயர், s. [in gram.] Concrete or subjective noun; a denotative name which signifies a subject only and not an attribute or quality--as மதுரை, தாம ரை--opposed to குணப்பெயர். துர்க்குணம்--தீக்குணம், s. Bad disposition, ill-nature, vice. நாய்க்குணம், s. Doggedness, rudeness, cynicalness. பேய்க்குணம், s. Devilishness, foolishness. மழைக்குணம், s. Sign or appearance of rain. நாற்குணம், s. The four prevalent or prominent human qualities. These are subdivided, and four are ascribed to each sex. 1. ஆடூஉக்குணம், the masculine: 1. அறிவு, knowledge, intelligence, clear perception. 2. நிறை, equanimity, self-control. 3. ஓர்ப்பு, fortitude, firmness, deci sion. 4. கடைப்பிடி, confidence, full persuasion, perseverance. II. மகடூஉக்குணம், the feminine: 1. நாணம், shyness, coyness, bashfulness--with regard to the other sex. 2. மடம், simplicity, weakness of intellect, want of clear perception. 3. அச்சம், timidity, fear, diffidence. 4. பயிர் ப்பு, delicacy; modesty; shrinking from what is mean or vile. முக்குணம், s. The three principles in nature, Satva, Raja, and Tama, which are the ultimate source of all quality or character in man, and may be indefinitely developed and expanded. The more generic and prominent development is three-fold, making nine gunas. Satva-guna-- goodness, produces illumination and mildness in thought, word and deed. Operating in these directions, it becomes an 'unfailling and perfect light to the soul, arousing it and making it ready to eat the fruit of its own doings' Raja-guna--passion, produces for the soul the propensity to excessive occupation in thought, word and deed, and asperity in the same. By these means it prepares the soul to receive pleasure and pain, according to its karmma or the law of its fate. Tama-guna brings forth arrogance, that egotistic guna which says 'there is none like me,' &c., and wilfulness or depraved will. By these means it welcomes all sensual objects and brings them to the soul. The first stage in the soul's spiritual progress is a degree of self-knowledge by which it has a view of these gunas and its relations to them. To each of these gunas belong certain peculiar qualifications. I. சத்துவகுணம் or சாத்துவிகம். Ist. ஞானம், wisdom. 2d. அருள், grace. 3d. தவம், penance. 4th. பொறை, patience. 5th. வாய் மை, veracity. 6th. மேன்மை, greatness, excellence. 7th. மௌனம், silence, taciturnity. 8th. ஐம்பொறியடக்கல், restraint of the five senses. The Satva principle is the source of truth, and the predominance of it renders its possessor virtuous, gentle, devout, charitable, chaste, honest, &c. II. இரசகுணம் or இராசதம். 1st. மனவூக்கம், mental exertion. 2d. ஞானம், discretion. 3d. வீரம், fortitude. 4th. தவம், penance. 5th. தருமம், charity. 6th. தா னம், liberality. 7th. கல்வி, erudition. 8th. கேள்வி, inquiry, instruction. The Raja principle is the source of sensual desire, worldly covetousness, pride and falsehood, and is the cause of pain. III. தமகுணம் or தாமதம். 1st. பேருண்டி, rioting or banqueting. 2d. நெடுந்துயில், long sleep. 3d. சோம்பு sluggishness. 4th. நீதிவழு, deviation from justice. 5th. ஒழுக் கவழு, deviation from virtue. 6th. வஞ்சம். deceit. 7th. மறதி, forgetfulness. 8th. பொய், lying, falsehood. 9th. கோபம், anger. 1th. காமம், lust, lasciviousness. 11th. கொலை, murder. The Tama principle is the source of folly, ignorance, mental blindness, worldly delusion, &c.--Note. These three gunas, according to the Agama school, are developed from Prakruti (மூலப்பிரகிருதி,) and constitute all those physical and psychical aspects, which, under the determining power of the will, form the functional qualities of an organized soul. (சிவ-சி.) In the Vedantic, idealist philosophy the gunas are the ideal attributes of Mula-Prakruti which, in its turn, is but an illusion or mistaken representation of Brahm. அறுகுணம்--இச்சுரன்முக்கியகுணம், s. The principal attributes of Isvara or God are six in number. 1. சர்வஞ்ஞத்துவம், omniscience. 2. சர்வேசுரத்துவம், supremacy. 3. சர்வநியந்திருத்துவம், pre-ordination. 4. சர் வாந்தரியாமித்துவம், omnipresence. 5. சர்வகற் பிதத்துவம், unlimited creative power. 6. சர்வ சத்தித்துவம், almightiness. (சது.) Another enumeration is-- 1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், selfexistence. 2. முதலிலனாதல், eternity. 3. உடம்பிலனாதல், immateriality. 4. எல்லாநல முளனாதல், benevolence. 5. எங்கும்வியாபகனா தல், omnipresence. 6. எவற்றிற்குங்காரணனா தல், being the Creator of all things.-Note. The latter enumeration is found in Roman Catholic writings. எண்குணம், s. The eight attributes of the deity. Authors differ in their enumerations and definitions of them. The enumeration of பரிமேலழகர், the commentator of the Cural, as agreeing with the Agamas, is:--1. தன்வயத்தனாதல், self-existence, independence. 2. தூயவுடம்பினனாதல், immaculateness. 3. இயற்கையுணர்வினனாதல், intuitive wisdom. 4. முற்றுமுணர்தல், omniscience. 5. இயல்பாகவே பாசங்களினீங்கிநிற் றல், freedom from the snares and illusions to which a derived intelligence is exposed. 6. பொருளுடைமை, unbounded kindness. 7. முடிவிலாற்றலுடைமை, omnipotence. 8. வரம்பிலின்பமுடைமை, infinite happiness. Another enumeration, as given in Jaina books, is--1. கடையிலாஞானம், infinite wisdom. 2. கடையிலாக்காட்சி, omniscience. 3. கடையிலாவீரியம், omnipotence. 4. கடையிலாவின்பம், boundless happiness. 5. நாமமின்மை, being nameless. 6. கோத்தி ரமின்மை, without descent. 7. ஆயுவின்மை, without age; eternal. 8. அந்தாரயமின்மை, unobstructed. 13)

cittiram (p. 183) s. A picture; any variegated printing, ornamental writing or carved work; an image, சித்திரித்தவடிவம். 2. Nicety, fineness, neatness or minuteness of a work; elegance, சிறப்பு. 3. Beauty, great beauty, பேரழகு. 4. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, அலங்காரம். 5. Ornamental or forcible language, நாகரீகமானபேச்சு. 6. Facetious, playful conversation; jesting, conundrums, riddles; deceitful discourse to secure an object, &c., மெய்போற்பொய்கூறல். 7. One of the four classes of poems or கவி. See மிறைக்கவி. 8. Wonder, surprise, அதிச யம். 9. The castor-plant, ஆமணக்கு. 1. Romantic, fanciful description; imagery, exaggeration, hyperbole, (commonly in poetry, வருணீயம்.) 11. A work on architecture, ஓர்சிற்பநூல். W. p. 325. CHITRA. சித்திரமுங் கைப்பழக்கஞ் செந்தமிழும் நாப்பழக்கம். The art of painting is but the habit or practice of the hand, and that of language is but the practice of the tongue. சித்திரம்பேசேல். Make no fanciful exaggerations. (Avv.) சித்திரகரணம், s. One of the five கரணம். See கரணம். சித்திரகவி, s. A curiously wrought poem. See திரிபங்கி. There are different kinds as-இரதபந்தம். A poem in the figure of a car. கோமூத்திரி. One written in the form of inter-linked curves. சதுரங்கபந்தம். One in the form of squares. சுழிகுளம். Verses written in a winding manner. நாகபந்தம். A poem in the form of intertwined snakes, &c. சித்திரக்காரன், s. A carver, painter. சித்திரகூடம், s. An ornamented or painted room, or hall with pictures, --as சித்திரசாலை.--Note. This term is applied to the temple at Chillumbram, and a mountain in Bundelcund where Rama abode in his exile. சித்திரக்குள்ளன், s. A cunning or shrewd dwarfish person. (c.) சித்திரங்கொத்த--சித்திரம்வெட்ட, inf. To carve, sculpture, grave, &c., on a plain surface. சித்திரசொரூபம், s. An image, an idol, a carved statue, a picture. சித்திரதீபம், s. A painted candle or taper. சித்திரதீபம்போலிருந்து தியானிக்கிறான். He sits meditating, motionless as a painted taper. சித்திரத்தையல், s. Fancy needle work. 2. As சித்திரப்பாவை. சித்திரத்தேர், s. An ornamented car. சித்திரந்தீர--சித்திரந்தீட்ட, inf. To carve or engrave any figures on wood or stone. சித்திரப்படம், s. A picture. 2. (p.) Variegated, painted or printed cloth, எழுத் துப்புடவை. சித்திரப்படாம், s. Veriegated, painted cloth. 2. A book of pictures, folds of paintings for amusement. (p.) சித்திரப்பதிமை--சித்திரப்பதுமை, s. A doll, statue, a puppet. சித்திரப்பா, s. As சித்திரகவி. சித்திரப்பாவை, s. A portrait or picture of a person or persons, real or imaginary, a carved figure. (நன்.) சித்திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A picture, a portrait. சித்திரப்பூம்பட்டாடை, s. Flowered silk cloth. (c.) சித்திரப்பேச்சு, s. Artful speech, cunning, jesting shrewdness. சித்திரமண்டபம்--சித்திரச்சாலை, s. A painted chamber or hall. சித்திரமெழுத, inf. To draw a picture, to paint, to sketch. (c.) சித்திரவெழுத்து, s. Elegant, nice, beautiful writing; caligraphy. 2. Variegated or fancy painting. 3. An anagram, as ஞிமிறு for மிஞிறு. சித்திரரேகை, s. Ornamental lines drawn on the body of a person. 2. One of the lines in the hand. 3. The wife of Kuvéra, குபேரன்மனைவி. சித்திரர்--சித்திரக்காரர், s. Fancy painters, portrait painters, limners, embroiderers. 2. Artizans, carvers, sculptors, engravers, சிற்பர். 3. Carpenters, தச்சர். சித்திரவதை--சித்திராக்கினை, s. Cutting and slashing in battle, prolonged butchery, cutting off member after member. 2. Ingenious and varied torture in inflicting death. (c.) சித்திரவித்தாரன், s. One artful, clever, or dexterous; one fluent in speech. (p.) சித்திரவித்தை, s. The art of fancypainting, sculpture, carving, engraving, &c. சித்திரவேலைக்காரர், s. Any fancyworkers, imitators of nature--as flower makers, artizans, sculptors, engravers. 2. Fancy-painters. (c.) சித்திரவேளாகொல்லி, s. A mode of music, a fine melody, கொல்லித்திறத்தினொ ன்று. Elementary principles; property, qualities; constituent principles; in nature; operations, whether of deity or of creatures, including elements, bodily and mental organs, faculties; matter, &c., பிருதுவிமுதலியகருவிகள். 6. Physiology, natural philosophy, works treating on physics, தத்துவநூல். 7. Power, authority, அதி காரம். 8. Bodily vigour, strength, சத்தவர். 9. The ninety-six qualities, or properties of things; 1. பூதம். 5, the five elements. 2. பொறி, 5, five organs of sense. 3. புலன், 5, five objects of sense. 4. கன்மேந்திரியம், 5, the five organs of action. 5. ஞானேந்திரியம். 5, the five organs of perception. 6. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், 4, the four intellectual faculties. 7. அறிவு. 1, intelligence, intellect, one. 8. நாடி, 1, the ten arteries, &c. 9. வாயு, 1, the ten vital airs. 1. ஆசயம், 5, the five receptacles for the humors, &c. 11. கோசம், 5, the five sheaths or investitures of the soul. 12. ஆதாரம், 6, the six fundamental station of the soul. 13. மண்டலம், 3, the three regions in the body in which the sun, moon and fire, have their respective influences. 14. மலம், 3, the three principles of moral evil, as causes of actions, enjoyments and sufferings. 15. தோஷம், 3, the three humors of the body. 16. ஏஷணை, 3, the three chief desires. 17. குணம், 3, the three natural principles. 18. விகாரம், 8, the eight predominant passions. 19. வினை, 2, the two accumulations of moral actions. 2. அவத்தை, 5, the five states or stations of the soul. Authors differ in these divisions. According to the சதுரகராதி. they are as follows: பூதம், 5, five elements. 2. புலன், 5, five organs of sense. 3. ஞானேந்திரியம், 5, five organs of perceptions. 4. கருமேந் திரியம், 5, five organs of action. 5. கரணம், 4, four intellectual faculties. These twenty-four are called ஆன்மதத்துவம் or powers of the soul. 6. நாடி, 1, arteries, nerves. ten 7. அவத்தை, 5 states or stations of the soul, five. 8. மலம், 3, principles of moral evil, as sources of actions, enjoyments and sufferings, &c., three 9. குணம், 3, qualities in nature, three. 1. மண்டலம், 3, regions in which the sun, moon and fire have their respective influence, three. 11. பிணி, 3, humors of the body, three. 12. விகாரம், 8, predominant passions, eight. 13. ஆதாரம், 6, receptacles or stations of the soul, six. 14. தாது, 7, constituent or elementary parts of the body, seven. 15. வாயு, 1, vital airs, ten. 16. கோசம், 5, sheaths or investitures of the soul, five. 17. வாயில், 9, passages, avenues and inlets of the body, nine. For particulars of the above, see the respective terms in their places. தத்துவமறிந்தவன்தவசி. A genuine ascetic is one that knows all physical principles. தத்துவக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Letter of administration. 2. Power of attorney. 3. Warrant. 4. Writ or authority of proxy. (Juffna usage.) தத்துவக்கட்டளை, s. Hindu physiology. தத்துவசாஸ்திரம், s. The philosophy of nature--as a science; physics, physiology, metaphysics, ontology. தத்துவசுத்தி, s. Purifying the faculties, members, organs, &c., by the use of water and incantations. தத்துவஞானம், s. Knowledge of the principles by which the soul is enthralled, and kept from union with the deity. தத்துவஞானி, s. A truly wise man, one acquainted with the ninety-six தத்துவம், and their various modifications. தத்துவதரிசனம், s. Knowledge of the mental, physical and other powers of nature. தத்துவதிரையம், s. A metaphysical trial; God, spirit, matter. (See திரிபதார்த் தம்.) 2. The three classes of faculties or powers. 1st. ஆத்துமசத்துவம். 2d. சிவ தத்துவம். 3d வித்தியாதத்துவம். தத்துவநூல், s. Works treating on physics. தத்துவபேதம், s. Difference of one power or faculty form another. தத்துவபிரகாசம்--தத்துவவிளக்கம், s. Works on metaphysics, physiology, &c. தத்துவவாதம், s. A system of religion that regards nature as god. தத்துவவாதி, s. A professor of the தத்துவவாதம், system. தத்துவன், s. Siva, as lord of all powers, சிவன். 2. Argha of the Jainas, அருகன். தத்துவாகமம், s. A book of physics, chiefly anatomical, அங்காதிபாதம். தத்துவாதி--தத்துவாதிகள், s. A class or division of the brahman caste, பிரா மணரிலொருவகுப்பு, They are commonly called தத்துவாரிப்பிராமணர். தத்துவாதீதன், s. God, as not dependent on powers and faculties, கடவுள்; [ex அதீதம்.] வாலதத்துவம், s. [prov. commonly பா லியதத்துவம்.] Juvenility. இளந்தாரித்தத்துவம், s. Vigor of youth. உடற்கூறானதத்துவம், s. The constituent parts and physical construction of the body. 45)
தாமசம்
tāmacam (p. 233) --தாமதம், s. One of three qualities or principles in nature--that of darkness, ignorance, delusion, sluggishness, முக்குணத்தொன்று. (See குணம்.) W. p. 372. TAMASA. 2. Dilatoriness, tardiness, drowsiness, துக்கம். 3. Delay, detention, தடை. 4. Slowness, dullness, sluggishness, inactivity, மந்தகுணம். 5. Reluctance, backwardness, unwillingness, பிரிய வீனம். (c.) சொல்லுகிறதுதான்தாமசம். You no sooner direct than he complies. தாமசசிருட்டி, s. The creation of evil or powers of evil. தாமசபதார்த்தம், s. Variety of food and drinks, மதுமாமிசமுதலியன. தாமசபுராணம், s. A Purana with tamasa imperfections. தாமசப்பிரகிருதி, s. One of a bad disposition, also a sluggard, சோம்பன். தாமசவேளை, s. A time of anger or passion. 2. As தாமதவேளை. தாமசன்--தாமதக்காரன், s. A slow, inactive person. தாமதப்பட, inf. To be delayed, to be detained. 2. To linger, to be tardy, to be reluctant. தாமதப்பல்லி, s. A lizard chirping in such a direction in the house as to denote delay, obstruction, misfortune. See வரத்துப்பல்லி. தாமதம்பண்ண, inf. To delay, to detain, to prolong, to retard. தாமதவேளை, s. [in astrology.] The division of the day--it being in three parts--which is most unfavorable for enterprize. 55) *
மயக்கம்
mykkm (p. 344) --மயக்கு, s. Mental delusion, stupor, infatuation, stupidity, drowsiness, intoxication; aberration of mind from ignorance, fascination, fainting or other disturbing cause; a besotted state, உன் மத்தம். 2. Confusion in nature--as in the blending of sexes among animals or vegetables, கலப்பு. 3. [in gram.] Combination of letters, coalescence, சையோகம்; also உட னிலைமயக்கம், இடைநிலைமயக்கம். மயக்கமின்மை, v. noun. neg. Absence of delusion, infatuation, intoxication, &c. 2. Clearness of understanding, intellectual brightness, mental illumination, தெருளுடைமை. மயக்கம்பூணுதல்--மயக்குறல், v. noun. Being overcome by intoxication, infatuation, &c., being phrenzied. மயக்கவணி, s. [in rhetoric.] A fault in speech, mistaking one object for another; [ex அணி.]--Note. According to a work called குவலையானந்தம், it is one of a hundred rhetorical figures. 2)
