ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

iẕu (p. 55) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw, pull, haul, drag, tug, drag to justice, to drag along the ground, ஈர்க்க. 2. To attract--as a magnet, ஊசி முதலியவீர்க்க. 3. To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To drag one into an affair, to cite, force one to court, &c., to drag one's name, &c. in support of an argument or practice, வலிகக. 6. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To absorb--as a sponge, to absorb humors from the body, to draw-as a medicine or plaster, உறிஞ்ச. 8. To draw out the voice, lengthen the sound properly in singing, to draw in speaking, reading, &c., நீட்டிப்பேச. 9. To strain muscularly, distort the features or limbs in spasms, &c., to have the cramp, to be convulsed; in this sense, it is often used impersonally, வலியிழுக்க. 1. v. n. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

ōṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓடினேன், வேன், ஓட, v. n. To run, flee, flee away, pass quickly, விரைந்துசெல்ல. 2. [used with the impers. terminations.] To grow long, extend, be long, go far, நீள. 3. To divide, split, crack, வெடிக்க. ஓடவுமாட்டான் பிடியுங்கொடான். He will neither run, nor suffer himself to be caught. அவனுக்குஎழுத்துநடையோடாது. He cannot read freely. ஊரோடுகையிலொக்கவோடு. Run when your fellow-countrymen do; i. e. do as others do. வேரோடுகிறது. The root runs (into the ground). கப்பலோடுகிறது. The ship is sailing, is under sail. ஓடவைத்தல், v. noun. Refining metals, புடம்வைத்தல். இழிவினோடொன்றிநின்றவாடகத்தையோடவைக் குமாறுபோல். As refining gold spoiled by mixture with the same metal of inferior quality. (பார.) ஓடவைத்தபொன், s. Refined gold. ஓடாணி, s. [in jewelry.] A pin or bolt passed into an ornament as a fastening, ஆபரணக்கடைப்பூட்டு. ஓடித்திரிய, inf. To run about. 2. To assume airs. 3. To take great pains, &c., to attain an object. ஓடிப்படர, inf. To run and spread as a creeper. ஓடிப்பிடிக்க, inf. To overtake in running. ஓடிப்போக, inf. To run away. ஓடியாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To go about, to endeavor. அவன்ஒருஉத்தியோகத்திற்கோடியாடிப்பார்க்கிறா ன். He goes about in pursuit of a situation. ஓடியுறைய, inf. To congeal gradually, இறுக--chiefly used in the past. கஷாயமெல்லாமோடியுறைந்தது. The decoction is all congealed. ஓடிவர, inf. To approach at a running pace. ஓடிவிறைக்க, inf. To extend--as stiffness over the body through cold, முழுதும்விறைக்க. ஓடிவெளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To be dispelled--as clouds; to clear--as the sky, முகில்பரந்தொழிய. 2. To be discovered--as fraud, theft, &c., களவுவெளிப்பட. அவர்வஞ்சகமெல்லாமோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. He has discovered the imposition, &c. மழையோடிவெளித்துப்போயிற்று. The appearance of rain is past away, the sky is become clear. ஓடுதாவடி, s. Bustle and confusion in preparing--as for a journey, &c., going abroad--as for business, &c., in a time of bustle, &c., கலக்கம். ஓடுதாவடிப்படுதல், v. noun. Being in a bustle--as in preparing for a journey, &c. ஓடுபந்தல், s. [prov.] A moveable canopy supported on cords, &c., நடைக் காவணம். ஓடுவிப்புருதி, s. A running cancer, ஓர்புண். ஓட்டம், v. noun. Running, flight, galloping, speeding, ஓடுமோட்டம். 2. Current, flowing, course, pace, drift, நீரோட் டம். 3. Defeat, rout, retreat, flight, தோல்வி. அங்கேநானெடுத்தஓட்டமிங்கேவந்தோய்ந்தது... I ran all the way hither. அவனுக்கெழுத்தோட்டமில்லை. He does not read fluently. ஓரோட்டமாய்வா. Come at once, come without halting, do not stay on the way. ஓட்டங்காட்ட, inf. To lead the way, to precede inducing others to follow. ஓட்டமாகவோட, inf. To run with great speed. ஓட்டமெடுக்க-ஓட்டம்பிடிக்க, inf. To set out running, start out with speed, to flee; to begin to run. நீரோட்டம், s. A current, a stream. 78)

ōṭṭu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓட்டினேன், வேன், ஓட்ட, v. a. To cause to run, to drive, propel, despatch, steer a vessel, செலுத்த. 2. To drive away, put to flight, chase, expel, exile, to disperse ignorance, darkness, ஓ டச்செய்ய. (தீ. 11.) 3. To pass in, insert, உட்செலுத்த. அந்தமாட்டையோட்டிக்கொண்டுபோய்விட்டான். He has driven away that cow. அந்தப்பேயையோட்டிப்போட்டான். He has expelled that demon. அவர்களைக்காட்டிலோட்டிவிட்டான். He has forced them into the jungle. ஓட்டி, s. A driver--used in combination--as ஈயோட்டி, fly-flapper; பே யோட்டி, an enchanter; படவோட்டி--சம் பானோட்டி, a boatman; ஆளோட்டி, a superintendent of laborers. ஓட்டு, v. noun. Sailing of a vessel, கப்பலோட்டம். 2. An assuming course of conduct. அந்தவோட்டிங்கேசெல்லாது. That course of conduct will not be tolerated here. எல்லாவோட்டுங்குல்லாவிலே. The value of the canoe is in the outrigger; i. e. all the matter hangs on him. [prov.] இந்தக்காற்றுநின்றாற்சென்னபட்டணத்திற்கு எத் தனைநாளோட்டிற்போகலாம். In how many days' sail may we reach Madras with this wind? 81)

kṭi (p. 87) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To rebuke, reprove, chide, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 2. (p.) To reject, renounce, avoid, dispel, நீக்க. 3. To restrain, subject--as the senses, ஒடு க்க. 4. To be angry with, be indignant, to show signs of displeasure, கோபிக்க. 5. To sunder, destroy, அழிக்க. 6. To cut, வெ ட்ட. 7. To forbid, prohibit, தடைசெய்ய. ஐம்புலனைக்கடிந்துநின்றே. Restraining the five senses-- (அறிவானந்தசித்தி.) களைகடிந்தொதுங்குங்கடைசியர். The women of agricultural districts who move about weeding the corn-- (நைட.) பொய்யிருள்கடிந்தமெய்ச்சுடரே. O light of truth that dispelled the illusive darkness -- (திருவாசகம்.) கடிகோல், s. A stick to scare away parrots from cornfields, தட்டை. 2. A rod tied to a dog's neck, and fastened to something else to keep it from mischief, &c., நாய்க்கழுத்திற்கட்டுந்தடி. கடிந்துகொள்ள, inf. To reprove, reprimand. கடிந்தோர், s. Sages, ascetics, முனிவர். (p.) கடி, v. noun. Rejection, prohibition, exception, ஒழிக்கை. 47)

kungkiliym (p. 114) s. [sometimes spelled குங் குலியம்.] Resinous gum, of which there are varieties, viz.: கருங்குங்கிலியம், செங்குங்கிலியம். பச்சைக்குங்கிலியம், வெள்ளைக்குங்கிலியம்; which see severally. See குக்குலு. குங்கிலியத்தூள், s. Pulverized resin; pounce. குங்கிலியப்புகைகாட்ட--குங்கிலியப்பு கைகொடுக்க, inf. To wave or offer incense of resin in a temple, or to cause possession for the utterance of oracles, &c. 27)

kuẕippu (p. 129) s. (See under the verb, குழி.) A peculiar harmonic rhythm in verse, in which the மோனை rhyming of the metrical feet are discarded, but the correspondence of the letters, or syllables, ending each foot and beginning the next forms a pleasing hormony--as in the following: அணியுடன்றபரி, பரியுடன்றகரி, கரியுடன்றகொடி, யணியுதேர்--மணியுடன்றதனு, தனுவுடன்றகணை, கணை யுடன்றகரை, மலிதாப் பிணியுடன்றவம, ரமருடன்றவு ட, லுடலுடன்றவுயிர், பிரிதாப்--பணியுடன்றகுய, வுய ருடன்றபடை, படையுடன்றமறை, யாசனால். The horses chafed on their bits--The elephants were rendered impetuous by the horses--The cars, decked with flags, were violently propelled by the elephants--The bows tinkled with their bells--The arrows were shot forth from the bows--The blood gushed from the arrows' wounds--The battle fiercely raged--The bodies were sore smitten in the battle--The souls separated and fled from the bodies. Thus the pious chief (Joshua), high raised on his jewel-decked chariot, vanquished the opposing hosts. Here, the feet are not regarded, but குழிப்பு forms the harmony. The variety used is தனதனந்ததன--தனதனந்ததன--தனதனந்த தன--தனதனா. (Besch. Shen. Tam. Gram.) 2)

cṭuttm (p. 157) s. [vul.] Rivalry, competition, போராட்டம். 2. Compulsion, force in extorting money, exacting payment, &c., urgency in borrowing, soliciting, teasing, &c., தொந்தரவுபண்ணுகை. (c.) சடுத்தத்திலேவந்துவிழுந்தது. The matter is in dispute. சடுத்தக்காரன், s. One very urgent, a compeller, an obstinate fellow. சடுத்தஞ்செய்ய--சடுத்தம்பண்ண, inf. To compel, urge. 2. To compete, vie, rival. சடுத்தமாயிருக்க, inf. To counteract each other, as competitors. சடுத்தத்திலேவிற்றுப்போட, inf. To sell to the highest bidder. (R.) சடுத்தமாய்வாங்க, inf. To purchase a thing by out-bidding another. (R.) 51)

See பஞ்சாமிர்தம். திவ்வியபுதுமை, s. A miracle, அற்புதம். திவ்விபூமி, s. Holy land, central India, where religious rites are specially meritorious. 2. Places of pilgrimage. See புண்ணியபூமி. திவ்வியபோதனை, s. Divine teaching. திவ்வியவாக்கு, s. A declaration, or oracle of a deity, or saint. திவ்வியவாசனை--திவ்வியமணம், s. Sweet odors. திவ்வியரசம், s. Quicksilver. A very wicked person, கெட்டவன். நச்சுக்காற்று, s. An unhealthy wind. See காற்று. நச்சுக்குழல், s. [vul.] A long tube for shooting birds with clay pellets, புட்ப டுக்குங்குழல். 2. A telescope, துரதிஷ்டிக்க ண்ணாடி. நச்சுக்கொடி, s. The after-birth, secundines, as நஞ்சுக்கொடி.(c.) நச்சுக்கொடிச்சுண்ணம், s. A medical powder made of the after-birth, administered in cholera, விஷபேதிச்சூரணம். நச்சுச்சொல், s. Blighting words, தீச் சொல். 2. Malicious, envious or sarcastic language, கடுஞ்சொல். 3. A malign word in poetic composition supposed to ber injurious to the hero, வசைச்சொல். நச்சுத்தானம், s. [in erotics.] Parts of the female body which if touched by men on certain days of the moon, are supposed to produce disgust, அமுதநி லைக்கேழாமிடம். நச்சுநீர், s. Poisonous water, விஷநீர். நச்சுப்படைக்கலம், s. Poisoned weapons. (p.) நச்சுப்பல், s. The poisonous fang of a snake. (c.) நச்சுப்பல்லி, s. A spotted kind of wall-lizard, whose excrement is used in witcheraft. 2. The chirp of a lizard from a direction which prognosticates evil, and causes one leaving home to turn back. 3. A woman whose words are malignant. நச்சுப்பல்லிபோலேதடுக்கிறான். He stops one like an ominous lizard. நச்சுப்பார்வை, s. Bewitching, amorous, libidinous looks, ogling, மோகப்பார்வை. (p.) 2. A blighting, ominous look, கண் ணேறு. 3. An angry, maliciouse appearance, கோபப்பார்வை. நச்சுப்பால், s. The poisonous milky juice of the spurge-class of shrubs. கள்ளிப்பால். 2. First thick milk of a woman or beast, சீம்பால். 3. Milk that does not agree with the young, இணங்கா தபால். நச்சுப்புகை, s. Poisonous smoke or fumigation from burning poisonous reptiles or vegetables. நச்சுப்பூடு, s. A poisonous herb. நச்சுப்பொடி, s. A poisonous powder, விஷத்தூள். 2. A small-fish, ஓர்சிறுமீன். நச்சுப்பொய்கை, s. Poisonous water of a tank. (p.) நச்சுமரம், s. A poisonous tree, எட்டி, Strychnos, nus-vomica, L. நச்சுமரமாயினும்நட்டவன்வெட்டுவானோ..... Though the tree be poisonous will the planter cut it up; i. e. though a man be evil, his patron is not the one to reject him. நச்சுமருந்து, s. Poisonous medicine. நச்சுமழை, s. An unhealthy or pernicious rain being untimely, not plentiful, &c., காலந்தப்பியமழை. நச்சுவாக்கு, s. Malign words of some particular poets. நச்சுவாய், s. The mouth of one whose words are blighting, விஷவாக்கு. நச்சுவிறகு, s. Poisonous fuel, used in witchcraft, &c. நச்செண்ணெய், s. A kind of poisonous oil, for curing sores, விஷதைலம். நச்செலி, s. A kind of rat whose bite is poisonous, sometimes fatal. (c.) நச்செழுத்து, s. Letters which may be so placed, in poetic composition, as to be considered ominous; as in the first word of the poem, or other important places, they are, ய, ர, ள, யா, யோ, ரா, லா, லோ, also உயிரளபெடை, ஒற்றளபெடை, மகரக்கு றுக்கம், and ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். 25)
