citākācam (p. 182) s. The wide expanse or sphere of pure intelligence; intelligence which knows no bounds. (உபநிட.) According to the doctrine of the Adwitas, the all-pervading spirit, God or the intellectual ether--the air being to him as a body; or as some say, the vacuum in the mind of the abstract worshipper, by which all abstructions to the view of every thing in the universe is removed, and he enjoys perfect felicity, ஞானாகாசம்; [ex சித் et ஆகாசம்.] Compare கடாகாசம், மகாகாசம் and மேகாகாசம். 40) *

tāraṇai (p. 234) s. Stability, steadiness, firmness, establishment, fixture, உறுதி. 2. One of the eight அங்கயோகம் of the silent, motionless devotee; fixing the mind, constantly on a member of the body as an expedient for keeping the thoughts from wandering. 3. Construction, arrangement, order, system, principles, established order of things either natural or artificial. See நவதாரணை. (Sa. Dha'ran'a.) நவதாரணை, The nine classes of things; existing or established by art; 1. நாமதாரணை, names appellations. 2. வச் சிரதாரணை,(probably) terms of architecture. 3. மாயாதாரணை, things formed by மாயை, as words, appearance of things created. 4. சித்திரதாரணை, paintings or sculpture. 5. செய்யுட்டாரணை, poems, poetry, compositions. 6. நிறை வு குறைவாகிய எண்பொருட்டாரணை, perhaps abstract numbers. 7. சத்ததாரணை, contrivance for the formation or modulation of sounds, as bells, musical instruments. 8. வஸ்துதாரணை, productions of art in general. 9. சதுரங்கதாரணை, a complete army of four kinds of forces. (See சதுரங்கம்.) II. The nine forms of worship practised by the Saiva Yogis. Their classification is: 1. நாமதாரணை, the worship of the Omnipresent God in the form of an image, to which is given his name. அளவிடப்படாதபிர மத்தைநாமத்தினால்வரையறைப்படுத்தல். 2. மாயாதா ரணை, worshipping the Supreme Being, who is unlimited, and without form, by the use of he formule, Maha Vakya (the great speech), accompanied by the entire renunciation of the world. This accords with the practice of the Adwita class of Vedantists, விகாரங்களில்லாதபாமரன் மாவினிடத்தில்புனைந்துரைக்கப்பட்ட பிரபஞ்சவியா பாரமாயையைத்துறப்பதற்குக்கருவியானமகாவாக்கியத் தைப்பொளுணர்ச்சியோடுஉச்சரித்தல். 3. பேததார ணை, an exercise of the Yogi to restrain his bodily affections, by uniting the vital air in the heart, பிராணன், in the podex, அபானன், in the body generally, வியானன், and in the throat, உதானன், these four, with that in the navel, சமானன்; and thus with the inward recital of the mystic O'm, to alter the position of his heart, supposed to be like a lotus flower with eight petals hanging downwards, பலமுறைஇயமாதிகள்செய்து, பிராணன், அபாணன், வியானன், உதானன் என்கிறவாயுக் களைச்சமானவா யுவுடனேசேர்த்து, கீழ்முகமாயிருக்கிற உள்ளக்கமலத் தைமேல்முகமாக்குகை, 4. மந்திரதாரணை, worshipping Siva by the famous five lettered incantation, நமசிவாய--rejecting the mystic O'm--ascribing to him the supremacy, and recognizing the universe as only the manifestation of Siva. Such as do this reject the primitive system, and believe in an all pervading soul of the universe, called Siva, எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் அதிஷ் டானமாய்எவையுமாகிறவன்சிவனேயென்று, பௌ ராணிகமந்திரங்களால்சிவத்தியானஞ்செய்தல். 5. சது ரங்கதாரணை, meditating on the Supreme Being, as one who having purified himself, and suspended his breath, unites the faculties of the mind with the four constituents of the body--earth, water, fire and wind--in the cavity of the crown of the head. This is done when the reason represented by fire; reflection by the wind; the will by water, are joined with resolution or passion, represented by earth, and all co-operate to fix the mind in the air, the seat of Brahma, காய சோதனம்பண்ணுகிறவன் நிலம், நீர், தீ, கால் என் னுஞ்சதுரங்கமாகிய அகங்காரசித்த புத்திமனசென்கிற வைகளைமுறையாக அடக்கி, பின்பு கால்வடிவானம னசை ஆகாயமாகியபிரமத்தானத்தில் சேரும்படிதியா னித்தல். 6. சத்ததாரணை, continual meditation of an ascetic in an immoveable posture, uttering the sounds of அ, உ, ம், or O'm. which represent the deity. This is done while closing the eyes and restraining all the external senses. By the mystic syllable, the வாதநாடி pulse is said to be purified, and its pulsation may be beard. (See கும் பகம்.) பிரமத்தையுணர்த்துகிற பிரணவத்தைத்தியான தாரணசமாதிகளால்அடைந்து, புறக்காணச்செய்கை யற்று, கும்பகத்தானமானவாதநாடியைச்சுத்திபண் ணி, நாதானுசந்தானத்தையடைதல். 7. வஸ்துதார ணை, the mental perception of Brahm, obtained by the firm power of thought, separated from external things, which unites the reason with the will, These combined, produce action or passion, Passion, reason and will are condensed in reflection, by which Brahm is perceived, பிறபொருளையடையாமல்அசைவற்றிருக்கிற மனமானதுபுத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரங்கள்மூன்றையு முறையேசேர்த்துக்கொண்டபின், அம்மனத்தால்பிரம த்தைத்தரித்தல். 8. வச்சிரதாரணை, rendering homage to Siva only in the Lingam. rejecting the lower positions which represent Brahma and Vishnu; and renouncing passion, and the corporeal senses, contemplating the divine essence with a fixed mind, பிரமன்வடிவாகியபீடத் தையும், திருமால்வடிவாகியவிவரத்தையும்நீக்கி, இலி ங்கத்தைமாத்திரம்பூசித்தல்என்றால்--அகங்காரத்தை யுஞ்சீவத்துவத்தையும்துறந்து, பரத்துவத்தையேதியா னித்தலாம், 9. சித்திரதாரணை, becoming ripe for absorption and approaching assimilation to the deity, by gaining a knowledge of the twenty-six properties of the body, the soul, and the Supreme Being (ஷட்விம்சகபாவம்). This is obtained by entirely forgetting the austerities practised, repeating continually the மகா வாக்கியம், solely contemplating the benefit to be derived, and then renouncing even that; the soul thus dominates over the immerging principle, arrives at a pure, spiritual knowledge and is merged in the Divinity, சத்தஉச்சரிப்பா லாகியமந்திரப்பிரயோகத்தைநீக்கி, பொருளையே ம னதில் அனுசந்தானம்பண்ணிக்கொண்டு, ஷட்விம் சகபாவத்தையடைந்து, பிராரப்தம் என்கிற கர்மபயன் களைமறந்து, சத்தார்த்தங்களையும்விட்டு, அறிவுமயமாயே இருத்தல். 32) *

[in mythol. also மகேந்திரபுரி.] A famous town said to have been inhabited by the Asuras but afterwards submerged in the southern ocean, ஓர்நகரம். மகேந்திரன், s. Indra, இந்திரன். மகைசுவரியம், s. [also மகதைசுவரியம்.] Great opulence. மகோததி, s. The ocean, the great sea, கடல்; [ex உததி, sea.] 2. [prov. also இரத் தினாகரம்.] The northern sea, from its connection with India; and the Ganges as being north of Ramisseram. மகோதயம், s. Final beatitude, emancipation from vitality, and absorption into the divine essence, முத்தியிற்கலப்பு. W. p. 653. MAHODAYA. 2. The rising of the sun and moon in conjunction, on a Monday, the sun being in Capricorn, in the month of January, and the moon in the twenty-second lunar asterism, in the seventh யோகம்--regarded as a most auspicious moment for sacred bathing; such is called மகோதயதீர்த்தம். vastu (p. 374) s. [pl. வஸ்துகள், வஸ்துக்கள், poetice வத்து.] A thing, a being, a creature, பொருள். W. p. 744. VASTU. 2. [in cant.] Spirituous liquors, or any thing intoxicating, மயக்கவஸ்து. பராபரவஸ்து. The Supreme Being. ஏகவஸ்து. The one Being, God. வஸ்துதாரணை, s. One of the nine forms of things. See தாரணை. I. 8. வஸ்துநிச்சயம், s. The certainty of God's existence, கடவுள்நிர்ணயம். வஸ்துப்பரிச்சேதம், s. Certainty as to the thing specified. See பரிச்சேதம். வஸ்துலட்சணம், s. The properties of the Supreme Being. They are five as given in the Agamas. 1. சத்து, reality; 2. சித்து, spirit; 3. ஆனந்தம், bliss; 4. நித்தி யம், eternity; 5. பரிபூரணம், all pervading. 67) *

vāyu (p. 385) --வாயுவு, s. [com. வாய்வு.] Wind, air, காற்று. 2. Wind or vital air in the system; also windy affections, flatulency, வாதம். W. p. 752. VAYU. 3. Vayu, the wind-god, and regent of the northwest. See திக்குப்பாலகர். எனக்குவாயுகொண்டிருக்கிறது. I have flatulency in my bowels. அசீரணவாயு. Indigestion. வாயு, 1. or தசவாயு. Ten vital airs in the body: 1. பிராணன், situated in the heart; 2. அபானன், in the top of the head and passing downwards; 3. சமா னன், in the pit of the throat; 4. வியா னன், pervading the whole body; 5. உதானன், in the navel; 6. நாகன், which effects motion and speech; 7. கூர்மன், causing horripilation; 8. கிருதரன், or கிருகரன், seated in the face; 9. தேவதத் தன், that which is exhaled in yawning, &c; 1. தனஞ்செயன், or தனஞ்சயன், that which remains in the body after death an escapes by splitting the head. Pain from wind, and flatulency; cholic. வாயுசகன்--வாயுச்சகன், s. Fire, as the comrade of wind, அக்கினி; [ex சகன்.] வாயுதாரணை, s. Suppression of the the vital airs, by yogas, &c. வாயுத்தம்பம்--வாயுத்தம்பனம்--வாயு ஸ்தம்பனம் s. The art of arresting the winds. See கலைஞானம். வாயுபகவான், s. The god of the wind. வாயுபூதம், s. Atmosphere. வாயுமண்டலம், s. Region of the winds. வாயுமலடு, s. Sterility from flatulency. See மலடு. வாயுமூலை, s. North-west, as the source of winds, whence the god sends them forth. வாயுமைந்தன், s. [lit. wind-born.] Hanuman. 2. Bhima--as மாருதி. வாயுவம், s. One of the nine indications of the clouds. See மேகம், 9. வாயுவாஸ்திரம், s. A wind-dart, received from Vayu. வாயுவிளங்கம், s.
